Unfortunately her changing what actually happened on that Dating game episode was complete nonsense, and lame. Instead Kendrick wrote a script that was complete fiction, making it look like that is what Kendrick wished would have happened between the questions and answers between Cheryl not Sheryl Bradshaw's questions and answers of Alcala and the other two bachelors. Sticking to the truth of what actually happened would have been way better. Instead she used fantasy, and that was a total let down.
The numerous going back and forth in time was confusing and seemed to serve little purpose. I think the choice of actor for the main villain was not too good: he was meant to be "charming", but to me just a look at him would lead you to feel there was something not right about him. Some of the women also seemed too gullible. I know they were meant to be in the fringe of society, but would anyone be attracted to someone who stole from vending machines, slept in on a bench or the laundry floor eating candies taken from a charity jar? I am not familiar with the real story, but my guess is that while his appearance on a TV show did take place, it was nothing like what was in the movie.
The Woman of the Hour isn’t Anna Kendrick. It’s the young runaway. This was better than a lot of the garbage that comes out these days. Happy for Anna.
I like how the last victim demonstrates a level of intelligence by appealing to the killer's emotions and minimizing the situation, she manages to save her own life.
The last victim's survival instinct is amazing. She is the definition of street smart. I'm so glad she survived. I can't believe they let him go free after she reported him. I feel so sorry for all the victims.
Amy is my hero. The sheer amount of self control to NOT panick when she woke up stunned me. I couldn’t get my eyes off the screen, my heart was beating, I exhaled so sharply when I saw she’d left the car.
Every woman watching this movie, seeing her walk through that parking lot knows that feeling walking home late at night by yourself. Praying you'll get home okay.
In the real life story she never went on the date, he won the date with her but she was creeped out by him backstage and didnt go through with the date and thats what saved her.
I think they had to add that into the movie to justify making her the star of the movie. If her only encounter was on the dating show, there's not enough there to make a movie that focuses on her. Personally, I think the movie should've focused on the teenage girl who got away. She had a real story to tell. The dating show girl didn't have enough of a story, so they had to add stuff that didn't happen.
I applaud the total lack of gratuitous violence! Less blood and more emotion speaks volumes. She did a superb job both acting and directing. The actors were cast perfectly, as well. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Only a woman could direct a film about Alcala conveying this much empathy for the victims, while also perfectly capturing the very private, personal terror felt by each individual in the final, tragic moments of their lives. Anna Kendrick has brought this story brilliantly to the screen. Kudos to the male screenwriter, but it is the slowly magnifying tension and palpable dread that comes with the contestant's growing awareness of what is really beneath the surface of “attractive, intelligent” Rodney that makes this movie unforgettable. That is what Anna made you feel. Nothing short of genius; HIGHLY recommend ✔️✔️✔️
Yeah, I feel if a man directed this they would have focused more on the killer being all "woah is me, I just need a hug". With a woman in control, Ana didn't let that happen.

All the (semi) factual scenes were side notes, the the main focus was on a bad date that never happened. The main character ruthlessly insulted a total stranger’s intelligence on a nationally televised show, when his only goal was trying to win her affection. And we’re supposed to like her? She was awful. The actor who played the killer did a terrible job. He looked nothing like the actual killer, and he couldn’t act. There was no plot. Nobody to root for (except Pete Holmes). No ending either. Just bad writing from someone who likely hates men. Ultimately it’s a fake story about a short bad date. If he didn’t follow her to her car, there wouldn’t have even been implied possible danger. It was meant to be a scary movie, but it wasn’t scary, and shouldn’t have been a movie. You have bad taste, and low standards. Go read a book.

Well done to Anna Kendrick for this amazing directing! That movie kept me locked onto my seat and really freaked me out by the scenes of what the victims endured. The scene when one of the victim is being asked by Alcala to look at the sky while taking her picture... and then it all got quiet... just so creepy... you could feel the tension. She should really direct more, she s got talent.
That didn't happen in real life. But I will say that if any girl gets a weird feeling about a guy like she did she should not put herself in an isolated situation. Ask one of the staff to walk you to your car or have them wait with you as he leaves.
I loved how she added no backstory for him or anything. No orgin story. Nothing to make us feel bad for him. While I loved the Monster shows by Ryan Murphy I feel like he tried too hard to make us feel bad for the serial killers the last 2 seasons. This movie is just about what he did and the fact that he was even able to go on a dating show after committing these gruesome murders. Literally how every docu series should be when talking about a serial killer. Really well done Anna. Congrats and well done on your directorial debut.👏👏
You weren't paying attention I guess. In the movie he did talk about how his dad left when he was young, and his being a photographer is accurate, they didn't go into great detail about his life, but some of the details of his life were there if you were paying attention.

Kendrick's directing changes the game. When true crime focuses on the gory killing of victims, while it's terrifying, it almost allows viewers to disconnect, as it is so outrageous we can't imagine ourselves in the position - likely a subconscious safety net. Kendrick's talent shines light on the universal experience of all women. that split second when the energy shifts, when alarm bells start screaming in our mind, primal instinct of danger. The wrong word that gives a man away, that certain glare where theirs eyes change, the slight touch, the pace of a man walking behind you. Our sensory systems a flooded. Quickening breath, high alert, increase pace, can I scream, can I run. Which will get me Killed, slow and quiet or fast and loud. We have all been there.
I just finished watching this movie. I was holding my breath THE ENTIRE TIME! I watched an abc 20/20 special prior to leading up to the release. Anna Kendrick did absolutely amazing on this movie, it’s gonna take me A WHILE to be able to watch this again. But I loved seeing the women and the backstory of the victims and how horrifying Rodney was.
The giving of phone number has happened to me. There was this guy who was not a creep but was very annoying and kept asking for my number, I gave him a number and then he asked me again just to make sure. I repeated the number. It was an old number of mine 🤷🏻♀️ After watching this movie, we all learn to have a backup number just in case a psycho would ask us twice lol or TO BE SAFE, never give your personal information (including your phone numbers) to people you truly dont know.
Now a days guys will call that number you give them to make sure it actually works. So if I'm ever in a situation where I don't want to give my number, but I feel like telling him no will result in him being aggressively dangerous I usually just give my number and proceed to block.
The male co-worker scene... where Alcala just stares at him like he is staring at prey and then invites him out. The co-worker was young and innocent so I suppose that was what Alcala liked. If you ever heard of Gavin De Becker interviewed about his book: The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals that protect us from Violence, I believe he was the one that warned to never be taken to a second location. And that's all i could think of when these women were lured to a secluded place.
Okay so that coworker scene left me confused. Why was there so much tension between them?? And i noticed a photo of that young guy in his photo album. Did he eventually kill him????
@@eh2396 I think the tension was Alcala noticing him (and co-worker excited oh I made a friend) and marking him as prey. The photo album were all his victims. The co-worker was sitting on a bed (motel or apartment) in the photo so Alcala got him alone, like all the others. He likely killed the co-worker, who was so naive.

Honestly, that was the biggest problem Never park so far or be so far away from transport as a woman with someone you don't know Anna's character was saved in the nick of time but having to walk that long distance to your car with someone you don't trust is dangerous
It really could've been a miniseries like Dahmer. Alcala had so many victims that weren't even mentioned. The 8-year-old girl has to be one of the saddest, but he had A LOT of victims. It's crazy to me how some serial killers like Dahmer get all the attention and others are practically ignored. I just recently learned about Rodney Alcala in the last couple of years. The man was an absolute monster.
There’s a lot of people that seem to think the movie should have focused on the teen that escaped not the gameshow woman. I think there’s a few issues with that thought. The gameshow is what frames and anchors the whole movie - without it, the jumps in time would have felt chaotic and been less impactful without the juxtaposition of violence and the gameshow. Having the gameshow framing also shows how serial killers are often incredibly charming and function within society quite well, tricking everyone. The focus on the gameshow allows for such an amazing level of nuance when it comes to women’s (rightful) fears that would have been much harder to do artistically without it.
I just watched this film I know the story so I was very excited to watch it, well done I enjoyed it a lot, what a brave young girl and clever reverse psychology she used on him
What I liked about this movie and what made it different was the most serial killer movies focus on the manhunt. This movie also sent a message that police didn't do enough to keep Rodney in prison. Where he was able to kill more women. He was charged with 7 murders. But it's believed he killed around 130 women. I also like that the movie didn't focus too much on the women being killed. Those scenes were short. We need so show less violence towards women in movies.
Wow, this is an excellent directorial debut. Thanks Kendrick for bringing a fresh perspective to this horrific tale. Any post that struggles with Anna’s take on this film is evidence that the author has an ‘agenda’. Can’t wait for more from this director!

It was a good debut. Choice of the subject, scenery, cinematography and without a brag to exaggerate the importance of the gender of director. Subtle and smart delivery.

I don’t know why they felt the need to embellish on the the actual events. The true story of Rodney Alcala is so bonkers that there was no reason to deviate from what actually happened. He was a truly evil person that did things in real life that this film didn’t even touch on.
I thought this movie was done really well. It was more about the woman than RA. I feel like the real women of the hour were the teenage runaway and Laura - cause in the end, the runaway had the courage to show up in court decades later to testify against him so he would remain in prison until he died. Further, Laura had the courage to go back to the police to try to get them to investigate him.
I liked the movie, but I feel that it could been a longer series. I feel it was rushed and I wanted more information. I like her as an actress. I was mad that they didn’t listen to the friend who tried to warn the police and the Dating Game producers about him.
That's a wild statement that because of being rejected on a dating show, is the reason he killed three more people. If the real life woman didn't reject him, then he would have killed four more people, not three.
I thought the film was VERY engaging and well done - with a little feminist slant to it (highlighting how sexist the film/tv industry was and how Sheryl managed that.) But there were so many interesting things that were left out. In CA, Alcala kidnapped a little girl and nearly killed her, but a good samaritan witnessed him snatching the girl and called police. Unbelievably he slipped away after that crime and moved to NY where he started a new life of murders under the name John Berger. As far as I can tell from the various accounts, Sheryl Bradshaw simply said to the producer "I get a weird vibe off this guy. Can I decline the date?" And the answer was yes, of course. But I never saw an account where they actually went out for a drink and had the encounter depicted in the film. Still, it was effective, even if a deviation from the true story.
The actor who played the serial killer was spot on! A certain level of creepiness that was believeable but not soo one dimensional. He scared me and captivated me at the same time, great job to him and Anna Kendrick - I knew she would do a great job! The flight attendants death was super sad and super scary - so violent!
Pretty good review. I think you missed how the women all were leaned on to be what the man wanted them to be. Present with Sheryl the most. And how uncomfortable this is.
Daniel Zovatto was great! I was certain that I had seen him in other movies. I realized that he was the lead in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. I really liked that series!
Watched it the other day with my gf, this one and barbarian really convey what women must feel way more often than men realise. The tension was amazing in this one, the subtleties when she realised the dude is fucked up, the lack of backstory for Rodney... Typically victims are portrayed like the murderer was in this movie, blank characters. Amazing watch
I came into this movie not knowing the story behind this guy. Although at times I felt like the movie was too all over the place, the alluring characters is what made me hold on until the end. Amy was truly captivating and I got more and more intrigued every time she came on the screen. I did feel that Anna Kendrick was a bit out of place and she was portrayed as the main character. Her performance only got better toward the end but her acting style still didn’t fit with the time the movie was set in. Overall this movie turned out to be better than I perceived it to be.
I thought this movie was horrible and super disrespectful to the victims... to me, it read as Anna Kendrick injecting herself into the story rather than say anything meaningful.
I felt like Kendrick injected herself too much when she was questioning the guys and she was being really rude and snarky ... she clearly hated shows like The Dating Game

I have to disagree with the comments about how they made JD more “human” compared to this where its no “humanization” in the Rodney portrayal. Where I feel like the evil we see in Rodney is Human. No idea how this is 92% on RT. It’s a 2.5/10 for me. If you took out the entire dating show segment of the movie, then you still get the same outcome, it’s like the world’s most longest deleted scene. It’s almost like the writers saw in the history books that a killer was on a dating show and just signed on to make a movie about it without knowing it had zero relevance: no kills, no clues, no further insight, no real tension since they are safe whilst on camera in front of an audience, also it has nothing to do with how he got caught at the end. This entire movie was message over story, and the messages were few and far between. At least the direction of scenes and acting was on point.

I love Anna Kendrick, but it's like babe....this story isn't about your character This story should be about what the killer is actually doing. She said in an interview that she wanted to focus in the female experience, but her character didn't even have an experience with him like that lol She just wanted to have her girl boss moment on the dating game and tried to make the movie around that one scene. The fact that the girl in the audience who recognized him has a story that goes nowhere is criminal. She had the connection to both the killer and one of the victims - if this was gonna be a girl boss telling of this then SHE should have been the main character. i disagree, i think that the dating scene was very important for viewers because it depicted rodney’s arrogance and cunning. by centering the movie around a seemingly insignificant moment, they were able to jarringly cut to his murders. the scene was comfortable because there was no real danger, there was a live audience. however, by cutting from that comfort and seeing his aggressive side demonstrated very clearly how he conducted himself. one second he made you feel safe, no harm could come, then the next he would become a predator. i don’t think they focused on it for it’s importance in his timeline, more they used it symbolically. i think they took an artistic spin to a type of film that has been made thousands of times to a point the violence has been desensitized.

I was bored. At this point Anna Kendrick is just playing herself, no range… Just oblivious white girl trope, “Omg you think I’m pretty?!”. “Amy” was great and super controlled. It was compelling because it’s based on a true story.
I saw this at a theater a day before it streamed and the film has some strengths, it also has some weaknesses: the film does a disservice to Sheryl Bradshaw and the two other male contestants as Bradshaw was portrayed as being rude and obnoxious on the show in the movie, but the real-life Bradshaw was pleasant and easy-going and the other two male contestants seemed like regular guys, but were portrayed as jerks. Also there was a fictional storyline about a Laura and her seeing Alcala on the show and her not being listened too, but at the same time she acted so stupid and inarticulate that she annoyed the hell out of me
Yeah, there was really no need to create characters like Laura. Alcala had so many victims that there's no need to add people that didn't exist when you could just focus on the people who did. I saw that as a waste of screen time. That screen time could've gone to one of Alcala's many other victims. I think Laura was created to push the narrative that women weren't being listened to or believed or taken seriously by police. It wasn't necessary. I wish they would just focus on the facts of the case instead of inserting their own views/opinions and blending it with true stories.
For me, making the one contestant such an outward jerk was intentional, since it seemed like he would've been the one who hurt her, the producer said that's the most important question. And while he seemed like a jerk, he was actually a decent guy who tried to warn her about Rodney and probably wouldn't have physically harmed her.

Good film. Great first directorial attempt. But it’s kind of silly that she changed. What happen on the show so much. She turned it into a women’s study 101 course totally ridiculous. The other two guys weren’t so bad in reality. Neither chauvinistic nor stupid. The movie didn’t need that.
Her neighbor seemed like a good guy. But I think that was done intentionally to illustrate how sexist and disgusting the film/tv industry was back then. Kendrick elaborated on Bradshaw's story as a way to show how much more vulnerable women were in that time period. The cops didn't take anyone seriously, Alcala was released on bail even though he was shown to be violent toward women, TV and film producers treated women like meat to be inspected and degraded. It's a bit of a feminist story.
I mean it’s spot on. To think men were anything but absolute shit is a bit of a fantasy. Only in the last few years have they had some self reflection. Not to be great, but barely decent. Even the guys who don’t do bad things, don’t stop it either. And doing nothing is just as bad.

Worst movie of the year. Anna Kendrick played a character so unlikeable, you root for the killer. Also, they never went on a date. This was 99% untrue. No plot, no ending. Whoever wrote this should try a different profession.
The ending was false. It was the murder of a 12 year old girl in 1980 that got him arrested & off the streets for good. Anna Kendrick should've done her research properly before making the film.
I liked the movie. She's a really good director. The theme of women as perpetual victims is a bit overdone - to the point of emotional manipulation. Women have historically benefited from male violence and not been too squeamish to manipulate it to their whim. It's historical fact that white women instigated a good number of lynchings of black men during the Reconstruction and slavery eras. So, not as innocent as Kendrick would have us believe.
Anna really made some really great decisions with casting. If she hired a casting director, she got a great one. Wonderful directing debut! The film is so nuanced. The opening scene is equally sad and horrifying.
Good movie, but in my opinion Kendrick should have stayed behind the camera and let the true story play out. Instead she decided to insert herself and her agenda into the film and give it a 21st century feel. Making every single man look like a pig just felt gratuitous and dishonest. The scenes between the killer and his victims however were superbly done particularly the girl who outsmarted him.

I hate that Anna Kendrick got the chance to tell the story, which was limited in every critical regard. Kendrick was out of her depth with this project.
This was her directorial debut. I do feel like she should've done something else first, maybe a comedy, something closer to her wheelhouse. She should've gained more experience and worked her way up to something this important and dark.
I just watched the movie Woman of the Hour and the real dating game show and of course the movie made it some woke feminist nonsense. The real dating contestant Anna Kendrick portrayed was totally into being silly and having fun. Anyway, the young runaway girl actress Autumn Best was amazing, look forward to seeing her in more movies. There was no suspense in this movie at all. Also it’s a shame other victims weren’t shown or given more attention. He killed 12 year old and 8 year old. He attacked women with a hammer. It would’ve been a great movie had the dating show been more of a side story and his killings and life were the forefront.
But that wasn't the point. She obviously wasn't trying to make a docu-drama - she was making a dramatization out of real events. So there is the room for things to be inaccurate in order to tell a story. Many people find the most interesting stories about serial killers are the ones who got away. There are dozens of accounts of women who talked to Ted Bundy - almost got in his car, then got a very creepy feeling from him and made an excuse to decline his offer. This Bradshaw woman is an example of listening to our instincts - leaning away from being polite and leaning deeper into our intuition. That's powerful.
She did a crappy job on this. First of all, she couldn't even get the order of the bachelor's right on the show. Alcala was bachelor number one (1) not three (3). I mean how do you screw that up? That's so simplistic. Then she made literally every guy looks like an imbecile or a creep. I know it was a 70s, and misogyny was huge bavk then, but it wasn't literally every single male on the planet. Just shows her stereotypical point of view of how she looks at men. No, this was not historically accurate AT ALL! The dialogue was completely cringey. And the God they got to play Rodney Alcala doesn't even look similar to him. You just can't pick a random guy slap a long wig on them and think that he's going to fit the role. And this was done by Netflix so there's really no excuse. They managed to get Zac Efron to look similar to Ted Bundy on his performance. Evan Peters looked damn near exactly like Jeffrey Dahmer. And the two guys that got to play the Menendez brothers and their new series look similar to the real life Brothers. I'm not saying they have to look exactly like the real life character but I mean at least try... It's almost like getting Brad Pitt to play Ronald Reagan.🙄🤦🏾♂️ There's no reason to change names because all the names of the victims are public record. The screenplay was lazy and so was the research. 4/10

That's why The Power was such a significant book and show (on Amazon.)

Instead Kendrick wrote a script that was complete fiction, making it look like that is what Kendrick wished would have happened between the questions and answers between Cheryl not Sheryl Bradshaw's questions and answers of Alcala and the other two bachelors. Sticking to the truth of what actually happened would have been way better. Instead she used fantasy, and that was a total let down.
The numerous going back and forth in time was confusing and seemed to serve little purpose. I think the choice of actor for the main villain was not too good: he was meant to be "charming", but to me just a look at him would lead you to feel there was something not right about him. Some of the women also seemed too gullible. I know they were meant to be in the fringe of society, but would anyone be attracted to someone who stole from vending machines, slept in on a bench or the laundry floor eating candies taken from a charity jar? I am not familiar with the real story, but my guess is that while his appearance on a TV show did take place, it was nothing like what was in the movie.

I think they had to add that into the movie to justify making her the star of the movie. If her only encounter was on the dating show, there's not enough there to make a movie that focuses on her. Personally, I think the movie should've focused on the teenage girl who got away. She had a real story to tell. The dating show girl didn't have enough of a story, so they had to add stuff that didn't happen.

The main character ruthlessly insulted a total stranger’s intelligence on a nationally televised show, when his only goal was trying to win her affection. And we’re supposed to like her? She was awful. The actor who played the killer did a terrible job. He looked nothing like the actual killer, and he couldn’t act. There was no plot. Nobody to root for (except Pete Holmes). No ending either. Just bad writing from someone who likely hates men. Ultimately it’s a fake story about a short bad date. If he didn’t follow her to her car, there wouldn’t have even been implied possible danger. It was meant to be a scary movie, but it wasn’t scary, and shouldn’t have been a movie. You have bad taste, and low standards. Go read a book.

I loved how she added no backstory for him or anything. No orgin story. Nothing to make us feel bad for him. While I loved the Monster shows by Ryan Murphy I feel like he tried too hard to make us feel bad for the serial killers the last 2 seasons. This movie is just about what he did and the fact that he was even able to go on a dating show after committing these gruesome murders. Literally how every docu series should be when talking about a serial killer. Really well done Anna. Congrats and well done on your directorial debut.👏👏
You weren't paying attention I guess. In the movie he did talk about how his dad left when he was young, and his being a photographer is accurate, they didn't go into great detail about his life, but some of the details of his life were there if you were paying attention.

I just finished watching this movie. I was holding my breath THE ENTIRE TIME! I watched an abc 20/20 special prior to leading up to the release. Anna Kendrick did absolutely amazing on this movie, it’s gonna take me A WHILE to be able to watch this again. But I loved seeing the women and the backstory of the victims and how horrifying Rodney was.
The giving of phone number has happened to me. There was this guy who was not a creep but was very annoying and kept asking for my number, I gave him a number and then he asked me again just to make sure. I repeated the number. It was an old number of mine 🤷🏻♀️ After watching this movie, we all learn to have a backup number just in case a psycho would ask us twice lol or TO BE SAFE, never give your personal information (including your phone numbers) to people you truly dont know.
Now a days guys will call that number you give them to make sure it actually works. So if I'm ever in a situation where I don't want to give my number, but I feel like telling him no will result in him being aggressively dangerous I usually just give my number and proceed to block.
The male co-worker scene... where Alcala just stares at him like he is staring at prey and then invites him out. The co-worker was young and innocent so I suppose that was what Alcala liked. If you ever heard of Gavin De Becker interviewed about his book: The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals that protect us from Violence, I believe he was the one that warned to never be taken to a second location. And that's all i could think of when these women were lured to a secluded place.

@@eh2396 I think the tension was Alcala noticing him (and co-worker excited oh I made a friend) and marking him as prey. The photo album were all his victims. The co-worker was sitting on a bed (motel or apartment) in the photo so Alcala got him alone, like all the others. He likely killed the co-worker, who was so naive.

It really could've been a miniseries like Dahmer. Alcala had so many victims that weren't even mentioned. The 8-year-old girl has to be one of the saddest, but he had A LOT of victims. It's crazy to me how some serial killers like Dahmer get all the attention and others are practically ignored. I just recently learned about Rodney Alcala in the last couple of years. The man was an absolute monster.

There’s a lot of people that seem to think the movie should have focused on the teen that escaped not the gameshow woman. I think there’s a few issues with that thought. The gameshow is what frames and anchors the whole movie - without it, the jumps in time would have felt chaotic and been less impactful without the juxtaposition of violence and the gameshow. Having the gameshow framing also shows how serial killers are often incredibly charming and function within society quite well, tricking everyone. The focus on the gameshow allows for such an amazing level of nuance when it comes to women’s (rightful) fears that would have been much harder to do artistically without it.

I just watched this film I know the story so I was very excited to watch it, well done I enjoyed it a lot, what a brave young girl and clever reverse psychology she used on him
I watched something about it on 48 hours and there was no mention of that whatsoever
The girl that showed up and sealed his fate was a victim of his when she was 8 years old.
What I liked about this movie and what made it different was the most serial killer movies focus on the manhunt.
This movie also sent a message that police didn't do enough to keep Rodney in prison. Where he was able to kill more women. He was charged with 7 murders. But it's believed he killed around 130 women. I also like that the movie didn't focus too much on the women being killed. Those scenes were short. We need so show less violence towards women in movies.

It was a good debut. Choice of the subject, scenery, cinematography and without a brag to exaggerate the importance of the gender of director. Subtle and smart delivery.

I don’t know why they felt the need to embellish on the the actual events. The true story of Rodney Alcala is so bonkers that there was no reason to deviate from what actually happened. He was a truly evil person that did things in real life that this film didn’t even touch on.

I thought this movie was done really well. It was more about the woman than RA. I feel like the real women of the hour were the teenage runaway and Laura - cause in the end, the runaway had the courage to show up in court decades later to testify against him so he would remain in prison until he died. Further, Laura had the courage to go back to the police to try to get them to investigate him.

I liked the movie, but I feel that it could been a longer series. I feel it was rushed and I wanted more information. I like her as an actress. I was mad that they didn’t listen to the friend who tried to warn the police and the Dating Game producers about him.
That's a wild statement that because of being rejected on a dating show, is the reason he killed three more people. If the real life woman didn't reject him, then he would have killed four more people, not three.

I thought the film was VERY engaging and well done - with a little feminist slant to it (highlighting how sexist the film/tv industry was and how Sheryl managed that.) But there were so many interesting things that were left out. In CA, Alcala kidnapped a little girl and nearly killed her, but a good samaritan witnessed him snatching the girl and called police. Unbelievably he slipped away after that crime and moved to NY where he started a new life of murders under the name John Berger. As far as I can tell from the various accounts, Sheryl Bradshaw simply said to the producer "I get a weird vibe off this guy. Can I decline the date?" And the answer was yes, of course. But I never saw an account where they actually went out for a drink and had the encounter depicted in the film. Still, it was effective, even if a deviation from the true story.

The actor who played the serial killer was spot on! A certain level of creepiness that was believeable but not soo one dimensional. He scared me and captivated me at the same time, great job to him and Anna Kendrick - I knew she would do a great job! The flight attendants death was super sad and super scary - so violent!

Watched it the other day with my gf, this one and barbarian really convey what women must feel way more often than men realise. The tension was amazing in this one, the subtleties when she realised the dude is fucked up, the lack of backstory for Rodney... Typically victims are portrayed like the murderer was in this movie, blank characters. Amazing watch

I came into this movie not knowing the story behind this guy. Although at times I felt like the movie was too all over the place, the alluring characters is what made me hold on until the end. Amy was truly captivating and I got more and more intrigued every time she came on the screen. I did feel that Anna Kendrick was a bit out of place and she was portrayed as the main character. Her performance only got better toward the end but her acting style still didn’t fit with the time the movie was set in. Overall this movie turned out to be better than I perceived it to be.
I thought this movie was horrible and super disrespectful to the victims... to me, it read as Anna Kendrick injecting herself into the story rather than say anything meaningful.

I have to disagree with the comments about how they made JD more “human” compared to this where its no “humanization” in the Rodney portrayal. Where I feel like the evil we see in Rodney is Human. Only humans torture and do evil and horrible things like this. Monster showed us that people who look “normal” are capable of doing evil things. Sometimes evil people are loving people to every but their victims. The world thinks if a murderer isn’t being portrayed as a “mike myers” than were glamorizing them or humanizing. No idea how this is 92% on RT. It’s a 2.5/10 for me. If you took out the entire dating show segment of the movie, then you still get the same outcome, it’s like the world’s most longest deleted scene. It’s almost like the writers saw in the history books that a killer was on a dating show and just signed on to make a movie about it without knowing it had zero relevance: no kills, no clues, no further insight, no real tension since they are safe whilst on camera in front of an audience, also it has nothing to do with how he got caught at the end. This entire movie was message over story, and the messages were few and far between. At least the direction of scenes and acting was on point.

The fact that the girl in the audience who recognized him has a story that goes nowhere is criminal. She had the connection to both the killer and one of the victims - if this was gonna be a girl boss telling of this then SHE should have been the main character.

i disagree, i think that the dating scene was very important for viewers because it depicted rodney’s arrogance and cunning. by centering the movie around a seemingly insignificant moment, they were able to jarringly cut to his murders. the scene was comfortable because there was no real danger, there was a live audience. however, by cutting from that comfort and seeing his aggressive side demonstrated very clearly how he conducted himself. one second he made you feel safe, no harm could come, then the next he would become a predator. i don’t think they focused on it for it’s importance in his timeline, more they used it symbolically. i think they took an artistic spin to a type of film that has been made thousands of times to a point the violence has been desensitized.

I was bored. At this point Anna Kendrick is just playing herself, no range… Just oblivious white girl trope, “Omg you think I’m pretty?!”. “Amy” was great and super controlled.
It was compelling because it’s based on a true story.
I saw this at a theater a day before it streamed and the film has some strengths, it also has some weaknesses: the film does a disservice to Sheryl Bradshaw and the two other male contestants as Bradshaw was portrayed as being rude and obnoxious on the show in the movie, but the real-life Bradshaw was pleasant and easy-going and the other two male contestants seemed like regular guys, but were portrayed as jerks. Also there was a fictional storyline about a Laura and her seeing Alcala on the show and her not being listened too, but at the same time she acted so stupid and inarticulate that she annoyed the hell out of me
Yeah, there was really no need to create characters like Laura. Alcala had so many victims that there's no need to add people that didn't exist when you could just focus on the people who did. I saw that as a waste of screen time. That screen time could've gone to one of Alcala's many other victims. I think Laura was created to push the narrative that women weren't being listened to or believed or taken seriously by police. It wasn't necessary. I wish they would just focus on the facts of the case instead of inserting their own views/opinions and blending it with true stories.

For me, making the one contestant such an outward jerk was intentional, since it seemed like he would've been the one who hurt her, the producer said that's the most important question. And while he seemed like a jerk, he was actually a decent guy who tried to warn her about Rodney and probably wouldn't have physically harmed her.

Her neighbor seemed like a good guy. But I think that was done intentionally to illustrate how sexist and disgusting the film/tv industry was back then. Kendrick elaborated on Bradshaw's story as a way to show how much more vulnerable women were in that time period. The cops didn't take anyone seriously, Alcala was released on bail even though he was shown to be violent toward women, TV and film producers treated women like meat to be inspected and degraded. It's a bit of a feminist story.
I mean it’s spot on. To think men were anything but absolute shit is a bit of a fantasy. Only in the last few years have they had some self reflection. Not to be great, but barely decent. Even the guys who don’t do bad things, don’t stop it either. And doing nothing is just as bad.

I liked the movie. She's a really good director. The theme of women as perpetual victims is a bit overdone - to the point of emotional manipulation. Women have historically benefited from male violence and not been too squeamish to manipulate it to their whim. It's historical fact that white women instigated a good number of lynchings of black men during the Reconstruction and slavery eras. So, not as innocent as Kendrick would have us believe.

Anna really made some really great decisions with casting. If she hired a casting director, she got a great one. Wonderful directing debut! The film is so nuanced. The opening scene is equally sad and horrifying.
Good movie, but in my opinion Kendrick should have stayed behind the camera and let the true story play out. Instead she decided to insert herself and her agenda into the film and give it a 21st century feel. Making every single man look like a pig just felt gratuitous and dishonest.
The scenes between the killer and his victims however were superbly done particularly the girl who outsmarted him.

I asked my mum (a boomer) if men were sexist towards her in the 70s and she just looked at me with a puzzled expression. By and large, women were no more or less happy in the 70s than they are today.
Social attitudes change and evolve over time. That’s normal.

This was her directorial debut. I do feel like she should've done something else first, maybe a comedy, something closer to her wheelhouse. She should've gained more experience and worked her way up to something this important and dark.

I just watched the movie Woman of the Hour and the real dating game show and of course the movie made it some woke feminist nonsense. The real dating contestant Anna Kendrick portrayed was totally into being silly and having fun. Anyway, the young runaway girl actress Autumn Best was amazing, look forward to seeing her in more movies. There was no suspense in this movie at all. Also it’s a shame other victims weren’t shown or given more attention. He killed 12 year old and 8 year old. He attacked women with a hammer. It would’ve been a great movie had the dating show been more of a side story and his killings and life were the forefront.
But that wasn't the point. She obviously wasn't trying to make a docu-drama - she was making a dramatization out of real events. So there is the room for things to be inaccurate in order to tell a story. Many people find the most interesting stories about serial killers are the ones who got away. There are dozens of accounts of women who talked to Ted Bundy - almost got in his car, then got a very creepy feeling from him and made an excuse to decline his offer. This Bradshaw woman is an example of listening to our instincts - leaning away from being polite and leaning deeper into our intuition. That's powerful.

First of all, she couldn't even get the order of the bachelor's right on the show. Alcala was bachelor number one (1) not three (3). I mean how do you screw that up? That's so simplistic. Then she made literally every guy looks like an imbecile or a creep. I know it was a 70s, and misogyny was huge bavk then, but it wasn't literally every single male on the planet.
Just shows her stereotypical point of view of how she looks at men. No, this was not historically accurate AT ALL! The dialogue was completely cringey. And the God they got to play Rodney Alcala doesn't even look similar to him. You just can't pick a random guy slap a long wig on them and think that he's going to fit the role. And this was done by Netflix so there's really no excuse. They managed to get Zac Efron to look similar to Ted Bundy on his performance. Evan Peters looked damn near exactly like Jeffrey Dahmer. And the two guys that got to play the Menendez brothers and their new series look similar to the real life Brothers. I'm not saying they have to look exactly like the real life character but I mean at least try...
