Not related to the ending itself, but I just thought of something about the movie. One of the first times the ghost manifests itself is when Catherine is obsessing over her weight. The electric toothbrush starts by itself and breaks the scale's glass. That's the ghost's way of telling Catherine to stop obsessing over it, I think.

I just don't understand how Ella was being a guardian angel. She didn't really help Catherine much. In that last scene where Cath was getting groggy, I thought she would just take over her body or at least do a bit of miracle to save her. But nah. The ending was quite a cliffhanger too. Netflix seems to be so keen on this sort of frustrating endings lately: What/If, Behind Her Eyes, The Call

i kinda thought it was insinuating that George also killed his "gay" cousin and made the whole diary thing up afterwards to ruin his reputation, because he tells the other professor guy that he stole the diary and read it over and over for weeks. Then later at the dinner party his dad brings up the diary and starts behaving very shittily about the revelations with the cousins personal life and saying it took the family by surprise. I kinda thought that was another lie of his being insinuated but im not sure since they dont really dive any deeper than that(im sure the point of that scene with the dad was to show where george gets it from/be the last straw for Cath)

giving how evil he is, i think he just envy at his cousin and killed him and make it like accident. Because he is the kind of guy who cannot see others bested him. Giving how well his cousin painting i probably think that his family is actually proud of him. You know like in every family there always some cousin who shine more and others parents always comparing their child with those cousin. George is just straight envy him, killed him. Steal his painting and forge the diary to make his cousin bad image. This can related in latter movie where he forced the recommended letter, and how he get the idea to kill the professor when he saw the professor going for sailing. It is because he already experienced it so if the conversation goes bad he kill the processor.
This George is just pure evil and physcopath with pretty face, there is a line where catherine said george always have what he want. Its mean that he will have hard time to accept no as answer. Just like when he trying to flirt and fuck Justine. He wouldnt let go justine hand, this is because he always success in trying to charm his prey with look and character. remember how he charm his student. This type of person is really dangerous because most of physopath and serial killer always has this kind of behaviour and dedication. They always hide behind their good character but behind that is full of lies. They willing to do everything to secure their good character.
Personally i just hate this ending, and the movie is not totally good. The bad guy is just not serve to much justice. We know how evil george is. But he only die by drowing and go to hell. Yeah that it. They should at least show his true downhill where all his lies is shown, where everybody damned him and he kill himself and then go to hell. Instead they just show he go to sea to died...Why i said he go to sea to die? simple its because he know the weather, and the guy at the jetty told him he cant go. That guy know if you go its like you wanted to kill yourself. He refuse to let george go but in the end he just let him go because he think george just want to sail for 10m. George know full well how the weather is, and when justine is always he know his lies will get blown. He just choose to die in the sea because he to coward to take his own like.

I think I agree with this point of view
it would appear George made the choice for that last sailing trip himself, there was no supernatural influence, right ?
I also feel that the central thesis of the spiritual world echoing the material world wasn't explored as much as it could have been. I think the end with George's punishment in hell might resonate more on a deeper emotional level if some scenes were repeated in a parallel. Like, remember that scene where George kind of stalks Willis to her bedroom? Imagine if they'd shot similar scenes in the police station, with Willis stepping up as a damning character witness (instead of poor Eddie ranting ineffectually)...

Is there any reason or explanation why the story is so firmly set in 1980?
I didn't see any historical reason: they never really refer to world events or such...
Perhaps Catherine's isolation is made worse by lack of internet/cellphones/social media, but, like, after 2020, I think we're all aware of the limits of online-only communities...
Was it maybe a cultural factor? Smit's wife was killed for not following her husband's teachings & Ella Vayle had to die to keep up Calvin Vayle's reputation, right? George's family is pretty repugnant when it comes to their gay cousin... showing how Catherine is kind of trapped there? In 1980, professors didn't divorce...? Something like that?

She had to run into the kitchen and dial and wait for it to ring and he just ripped it off the wall and boom it’s broken and now she has to run upstairs for the other one. Heck these days even if you aren’t near your phone you can yell at it to call 911 and it will, or even just press the power button a certain way. Plus drug testing, DNA evidence, phone records, surveillance footage, etc. would have been used in the investigation and he would have been caught immediately, such as the case of Chris Watts.

I think the eating disorder was just to show how out of control she felt without needing her to say it or act unhinged. The fact she was drugged with her shake might be a nod to the fact it was something she ate that she had no control over. Other people chose it for her.
I'll say that if it had gone to trial, George probably would've been acquitted and I'll tell you why. Eddie.
Eddie provides reasonable doubt because even though there is a lot of evidence against George, there is also a lot against Eddie. His fingerprints are also on the weapon (means), he was having an affair with her and was friends with the girl George was having an affair with (motive) and he and his brother had regular access to the house plus because his brother was babysitting, he knew when the house would be empty (opportunity). Not to mention the similarities between Cath's death and his Mom's. They can't determine exactly when she died because of the state of the body AND even though George filled the prescription that drugged her, he had a legitimate reason to get the pills and Eddie easily could've accessed them when he 'came into the house.'
It's enough evidence in both directions to get them each acquitted of the crime.
Actually, it's a fascinating strategy. For example, if there are two people who confess to a murder and each one reasonably could've done it, they will both get off even though they confessed. Of course, the confessions must explicitly state that the other person had nothing to do with it or you'll just go down as accomplices

the ending has great correlation to the movies themes... like religion and ghost etc. in the end, the husband sails the sea trying to escape, but meets his death and he goes straight to hell. that’s why his boat is burning in the middle of the ocean and the ghost woman says “they never win” etc... unlike the typical “he gets arrested in the end” end of movies like this, justice is served in the afterworld. aka, he will burn in hell for eternity while catherine is an “angel” that now protects the house.

Felt like a very unsatisfying ending. Not to mention the whole clip where he goes into the garage at the beginning and the blood drips through the ceiling is a mistake because he acts surprised/ concerned about it when absolutely no one is around to see. So what is the point of putting on the concerned husband act when you know exactly what happened because you’re the one that murdered her?

    • @littlelou050
      @littlelou050 3 роки тому +17

That's the point. He was desperately trying to be this fake person. He attacked others when he was afraid that they'd threaten that. It's why he leaves Catherine alone eventhough he knows she's been drugged. George is/was a sick man, he wanted control. The male voice you hear throughout tells him what he needs to do to gain control.

I actually really dug the first and second act, they were golden, even though it was all based on a very, very skinny string of coincidences, and the first few seconds of the movie literally spoiled it for us. There were plenty of plot holes, and thank God I wasn't the only one who disliked the 3rd act. Apparently the ghost took over her body when she was sleep so she wouldn't feel pain.....yeah. My biggest plot hole was that if she didn't want the girl to suffer the same fate, then STOP PLAYING PEEKABOO AND SCARE THE FAMILY OUT OF THE HOUSE. You obviously have affect on real objects. The gas smell, the chair rocking, light exploding...hun. if you shut a door in the husband's face and LOCK IT when both the husband and wife know that it wasn't either of them, scare them away. Its like she WANTED the girl to stay long enough so their marriage would become provoked enough for her to get axed.

am i the only one who liked the ending? justice served in the afterworld, the best kind of justice for it is eternal.

No it should be both, he should be punished for what his done to his wife and others in this world and the afterworld, that’s what we called justice, at least he he felt guilty because that scumbag deserved it

@@wannnabee7110 he didn't feel guilty. He knew he was screwed knowing Justine is up and will tell everything to the police.

no i agree. at first i was dissatisfied, but then i thought, “what better punishment for such shameful actions than going to hell?” and i also thought about how the painting was framed in a museum and how his humiliation would be public. people will see his puny boat going to hell and they may even get pleasure from it because it’s art. the fact that he’s in a painting makes him so much smaller and more helpless.

It’s not really about the end even , it’s just generally how somethings did not make sense or add up

I think the ending is a bit bitter sweet but unfortunately true many womens are victims of manipulative men who only think (care) about their careers and i think her husband was gone to be a killer. we see several times in the film that is quite strange

i really enjoyed the movie. it feels fresh: the ghost comforting Catherine, gaining power and helping Justine wake up. i was a bit surprised at this new vision. George definitely killed his cousin and stole his paintings. i don’t know what to think about the gay diary thing. not enough info to suggest he made it up, although given its George and he’s pure evil wouldnt put that past him. i liked the ending ‘cause it looked cool and gave the movie kinda a circle story feel. i always like when they do that. Amanda is beautiful as always but she seriously looks skinny in this one. such a shame. i love a more healthy look on her.

I was never certain if the evil spirit was Mr. Vayle or Mr. Smit.

Typically when a series/show/movie BEGINS with a cliff hanger and then gives a timeframe prior leading up to current day (i.e. "Winter 1980" then "the spring prior")...it makes its way nicely to the explanation of said cliffhanger. Maybe I missed something, but why in the world did we have that opening scene with Franny being carried off by George? Wth was that all about? What did I miss? Was it his own dream? I keep looking for an answer to that question. Am I the only one? 🤣

What was up with the blood dripping on the car in the beginning? And how does that frame Eddie?

In the beginning you see the girl woken up from the sleep that the father put the girl in, this scene was just after she found out her mother was killed. And for the blood that was the mothers blood, since the bedroom was above the garage. I hope that helps! I don't know w happened to the kid tho.
