    Fantastic series! You might make note/mention that Mercedes recently extended the warranty of the camshaft adjusters to 10 years/unlimited miles. As such, if the car owner can show reasonable proof of scheduled maintenance they should be able to get the dealer to perform this procedure under the extended warranty.

    Thanks for your video. There is one thing I got confused. In the video 08:40, when you started to rotate the crankshaft to replace chain, the cams are fixed by the timing tool, which means the 16 valves are in the fixed position. The 4 pistons are up and down while rotating the crankshaft. Will the 4 pistons hit and damage the 16 valves?

  • @Wakanda4eva6996
    @Wakanda4eva6996 2 місяці тому

    Hey man - is it okay to rotate the crank while the camshaft adjuster tool is on the camshafts? I see that you only rotate the crank to feed the new chain in while the adjusters are removed from the camshafts. is that not going to mess with the valves/pistons touching or interfering?

    First time changing timing chain using open chain method, I have a (closed) new timing chain. I need to open (separate) it to install on engine, and then close (rivet) the chain once again…. My question is: Can you just reuse the connecting link or do virgin links need to be purchased somehow in order to close (rivet) the timing chain for final assembly?
    Thanks

    I've read elsewhere that its not possible to get the exhaust side timing mark exactly lined up even after doing this repair, on the kompressor versions of the M271 anyway. The example in this video is the turob version with a different timing chain. Were you able to get all timing marks exactly lined up?

    Hello, is it necessary to replace the chain ? I just bought c250 with 111k miles and I heard rattle that I believe it’s from timing chain while driving in slow stop/go traffic. No fault codes or issues ( except vibration Arround 3000 rpm in neutral). Car was neglected before.
    I will check the timing and probably there is bad sprocket, I plan to replace the tensioner and sprockets ( if there is problem in them) also I have dealer type scanner can I catch worn sprockets by looking at the actual cam timing ? Thank you

    hi, do u advice to change the timing chain even for lower mileage? 100.000km ?

    • @K1Vernon
      @K1Vernon 2 роки тому

      If your merc is serviced at every interval and good oil is used like a 5w40 full synthetic then it should last longer, mostly it has a very audible noise when the chain starts to wear. I service my W203 C180 Kompressor myself and change the oil and oil filter at every interval and so far after removing the valve cover at 100000km my timing chain is still good. Check your timing chain every 50000km or so just to be sure. And when you have the extra money get the chain and sprocket kit so long as the timing chain will eventually wear it is inevitable

  • @totallybonkers

    You never showed/answered a critical question. How do you get the tensioner to engage once replaced?
    I have heard you turn the crank backwards 1/2 turn, and it triggers the ratchet mechanism to engage. But that's just what I have heard. Is that the correct way to engage the new tensioner?

    We do quite a few of these at my Euroshop in NY. Only the Chinese kits make the proper size knurling/peening dye needed to knurl/peen the MasterLink studs that hold the link plate on. When using the OEM chain the die is only good for one use, before it's too marred up to reuse. MB offers the right die, pt# 271589016300 for $506 my cost. But it's not available. Does the kit you're using have the proper size dye and have you used it on an OEM chain? If so, can you tell me who's name is on the kit? Also, we are working on a trade-in program on repaired/welded cam shafts.
    Thanks, Steve, PitBull Motors inc

    Do the valves hit when you bar the crank over or have the lifters been taken off? Also, can the tensioner be taken out for checking on its own? I have a c180 compressor 2003 but not sure if its Variable valves. chain jumped apparently and a garage put it back in place but reported it as very lose. Dose the tensioner have oil pressure as well as a spring behind it? The car belongs to an old boy and its not cost effective to get a garage to deal with it. So I may have a go. I am a diesel fitter so within my capability but Im just thinking blind at the moment. If I take it apart ill be committed.

    I would bet that a motorcycle chain tool will do this same job at a much cheaper price?? Why did you not use the vise grips and the extra chain coming out as a weight laying out over the fender going down to the ground, with a fender cover of course.
