Novice riders get yelled at for bad passing at Barber Motorsports Park 8/13/23 STT Novice Session 3

  • My first time back to Barber Motorsports Park after wrecking like a dumbass back in June. Didn't record the first two sessions since we were just riding around in groups. Some hotheaded wannabes were passing in very close proximity the session before (we weren't even allowed to pass yet) so we got reprimanded :D We do two laps in this one before Point-to-Pass allows us to ride solo. In classic novice fashion, one rebel scum (8:00) couldn't help himself.
    - 3:28 The dude we were all looking at came in the Pit Out... not something you see every day. Advanced rider too haha
    2008 Honda CBR600RR
    Dynojet PCV with custom fuel map and spark correction
    Quickshifter w/ gear dependent kill times
    Toce Exhaust w/ cat delete
    15/42 sprocket configuration (-1 front from stock). Speedo was corrected.
    Filmed using an Insta360 X3
    Onboard telemetry was compiled using Telemetry Overlay and Race Render

    Alix, Just found your channel. I appreciate the ride along. It's been awhile since I've been to Barbers so it was nice to get a few laps in with you. It's also the first time that I've heard a Toce in the upper RPM's on the 600RR. I believe that's what you have is a Toce anyways. It sounds great. A little like a Ducati with that lower tone rumble to it. I still sport a Leo Vince on my '04 600RR so it sounds like an F1 car. 🤩 Sucks being trapped in Novice but I get it. Slots fill fast @ Barbers. I see you just finished an Advanced class so I'm off to check out that one. You certainly don't belong in Novice.....

      Thank you kindly, although I'm not sure I belong in Advanced to be fair xD I was a little over my head as there were some MA racers that day practicing. And yes, it is a Toce. I love the lower tones it has as well as when you get up in the rpm's it starts sounding like some serious old F1 type shit which I love so I know what you mean with that LeoVince. 600RRs sound good no matter what you put on them.

    What did you use for camera and telemetry? Very cool view. Also wow what a mix of riders, I can see why people were getting antsy in the back, it was like a funeral procession in front. I'm surprised they didn't line up by how fast guys wanted to go.

      You're tellin me! It was painfully slow riding in the groups. As for your question, I use an Insta360 X3 which I reframe into a 2K video. My telemetry is recorded from multiple sources but compiled using Telemetry Overlay then RaceRender 3. It's a bit of a complicated process but I may do a tutorial vid showing how it's all done.

      @@danchristiani there are seven groups based on experience which are all led by instructors. Certain groups go faster than others and will pass as a group but there's no individual passing allowed within groups until point to pass is introduced halfway through the third session. It's why I didn't record the first two sessions. Didn't think anything crazy would happen.

    good vid.... im digging the telemetry, can you fully explain what you used to do it?

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  7 місяців тому +1

      I can maybe do a video in the future that explains how I do it. But in a nutshell, GPS/gyro is recorded by the X3 using a GPS remote. I record a secondary audio stream using my phone which I keep in an internal pocket of my jacket so there's virtually no wind noise and gives a lower frequency range so I blend the two to have better audio since the X3 can sometimes get overwhelmed by wind noise. The heart rate is recorded using a chest monitor that connects via bluetooth to my phone which also records gps/gyro so I have a second stream of that data if the X3's doesn't work. I import the video in the Insta360 software and do a manual Reframe of the whole recording to convert it from 360 video to a 2K (youtube and most socials are not yet caught up with 360 tech so it looks like crap, better to just make it a normal video). Then I import to Telemetry Overlay and input all data from those I mentioned into gauges I've created and positioned to my liking. After that, I use RaceRender 3 which reads the CSV telemetry files from my Power Commander V (RPM, throttle pos, speed, gear) which I use a POD-300 from Dynojet to record all that stuff. The main headache is syncing everything to the video which can easily take an hour or two. But ultimately, most of it is just a template I made and I just drag and drop all the data into it each time.

      I compared it to a smart watch which that was all over the place (given all the movement the watches have a hard time getting a good reading). The chest strap monitor I wear works like an EKG in that it measures the electrical activity through diodes on either side so they are supposedly the most accurate. Only other test I did was I had a BPM tap app and I used that at the same time, the readings were pretty good (+/- 1-3 bpm) from what I could tell.

    Nice riding! Was surprised when you passed few riders in a long turn. Stt usually allows passes only on straights but maybe barber is different idk.
    Your hr is insane if that's accurate! I do track my hr too and at first track days I maxed out at around 175. Now I have about 7days in total and way) my hr is way lower. Rarely hitting 160...
    Cool set up though! See you in joliet autobahn cc next year!

    • @alixvandurand
      @alixvandurand  7 місяців тому

      STT allows passing in Novice but only on outside and you have to give 6ft distance on all sides which doesn't leave a lot of opportunities unless you are on a straight. Intermediate is the same except you can pass on the inside too. Advanced there are no restrictions.
      And I'm not sure what you mean by hr? The bike I'm on is a CBR600RR so it's only capable of maybe 160 stock. I've swapped the front sprocket -1 tooth so it tops out around 150 now but it gets there really fast haha

Average I'm around 180. The adrenaline is nuts but also I'm not used to it, which is probably why yours is lower now. Well yeah, I tend to agree with the guy although 10' seems excessive. People, particularly first timers, sign up for the beginner group for a reason and that is so they wont get spooked by other riders. People should be able to pass on the straight and allow enough room for others.
