I met him socially and I chatted with him. He is absolutely real, no pretentions whatsoever. He brings meaning to the expression, "What you see is what you get." An utter gentleman.
Apparently, when saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith asked him in 1962 what he was up to, he replied that he was playing in a blues band till something better came along!
@@lisica8458 Well maybe, but Charlie always said (past tense ouch) that playing Jazz, Rock & Roll, Blues, funk etc is essentially the 'same thing!'. That it's the same feeling for playing, just a different format. Words to that effect anyway. I think Darryl Jones has the same appreciation as that. So does Bernard Fowler come to that. Superb singing in different genres.
Came here straight after reading this sad news just now... what a cool guy and amazing musician. I was lucky to see him and the Stones live once in Vienna. RIP
My dear Charlie .... Being a Jazz fan, you had to leave this world, to know that you existed in this wonderful style .... Wherever you want you to be, I beg you to forgive me for my ignorant state ... _ :(
A Rock & Roll drummer with the soft Jazz licks that just worked so efficiently with The Stones. And a true gentleman. RIP. The old guard is changing, and we will never see their like again.
Just look and enjoy his smile as he plays the music that was in his heart. That is the smile of true love! We WILL miss you Charlie, but you'll ALWAYS be in our hearts.
It’s so funny that while playing this music, Charlie looks like he’s having so much fun. Whereas in RS he seems so lethargic and “working”. I GET it, but I’ve never seen this footage. I’m glad Charlie played drums in one of the greatest rock bands, all the while allowing him to fulfill his jazz aspirations and just have fun!!! RIP Mr. Watts!! ❤️
I’ve read differing opinions about the musical prowess of CW - from people who are certainly better qualified to comment than tone-deaf me. What I celebrate is the man himself: how he behaved: how he grew the love of his family and friends. When I die, I hope that my circle will feel something the same about me.
Jazz was Charlie's first love and if it had been more mainstream than Rock'n' Roll he would have had a successful career as a Jazz drummer for 50+ years. It's very relaxing and one of the best things to come from New Orleans
I think when people like Brian, Ian Stewart and Bill started leaving he lost his heart for the game and just 'hung around' the Stones as he liked to call it.
Charlie's facial expression is different when he plays Jazz. You see the feeling of ecstasy and happiness on her face when he is playing the music he loves. Something that doesn't happen when he's at the Stones where he gets a cold and indifferent expression, with no pleasure.
I didn´t know that Charlie Watts was a great jazz-drummer!!! I´m born 1958 and has been listening to the "Stones" since 1965........For me he was allways the drumplaying guy in the background who nobody cares about. The bands front figure Mike Jagger and Keith Richards was what people want to see,but now ...R.I.P Charlie Watts and dont´t forget Brian Jones who was one of the founder that make this band the greatest ever!
I'm not much of a Rolling Stones fan... as a matter of fact, I only really love two of their songs (Beast of Burden and Waiting on a Friend). I've become a big fan of Charlie Watts though, may he rest in peace.
20 years ago and he asked Charlie the stones done hell no its 2014 and they still are touring and that's how you get the title worlds greatest rock and roll band .
Bernard Fowler has just the right voice! Great track. Thanks for posting. The interview is a bit awkward Miller is not the right person to interview Charlie, who looks like he'd rather be somewhere else.
You're welcome. I agree, Miller definitely kept the interview on the shallow and lighthearted side, missing a great opportunity to talk musical history with Mr. Watts. OTOH, not sure if Letterman, Leno or Carson would have fared any better.
I like to think that Charlie is on the kit behind Billie Holiday, Fontella Bass, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse... such great shows to look forward to...
Dennis Miller thinks he is a star, Charlie looks a bit embarrassed for him. Charlie is a true gentleman and looks like European royalty. The singer is terrific!.
I met him socially and I chatted with him. He is absolutely real, no pretentions whatsoever. He brings meaning to the expression, "What you see is what you get." An utter gentleman.
Very lucky to do that, wonderful!
May I push you for more of the story?
Charlie got to Heaven long before his body died!
THIS is Charlie Watts at his purest when he’s playing Jazz, the rock and roll brings the money but his heart is in jazz...
Right, could'nt say it better...His brush technique is so relaxed and smooth.
True class, absolutely true class. Hope he gets through his surgery well and can continue on.
Apparently, when saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith asked him in 1962 what he was up to, he replied that he was playing in a blues band till something better came along!
I suspect the same is true with Darryl Jones . . . the Stones paycheck allows him to lead a comfortable life, but his heart is no doubt with jazz.

Much love to this man "who used his day job" to support his jazz habit.
A perfect comment.
RIP Charlie Watts - you brought joy to many
Came here straight after reading this sad news just now... what a cool guy and amazing musician. I was lucky to see him and the Stones live once in Vienna. RIP
Yes great moments
To assemble a band such as this and then add Bernard Fowler’s vocals is just icing on the cake. Beautiful.
Peter King was a top notch sax player from Britain.
Gerard Presencer - trumpet! Discovered this album when it came out. Prescencer really put the hook in me.
Mr Charlie Watts, always sober and perfect, never too much, never too little.
You will trully be missed 💔🌹🌹🌹
RIP Charles Robert Watts, a true jazzman and a true gentleman of rock n roll

Such a classy and elegant man was he. He will be truly missed. RIP.
Charlie *worked* with the Stones, but he *played* with the Quintet!
Charlie in his true element here, RIP to the worlds greatest drummer
Man, what a cool guy Charlie was. A humble gentleman.
R.I.P. to one of the true greats of rock and roll drumming, Charlie Watts.
Charlie is always effortlessly more charming than the people who interview him !
He's always just himself. 😊
the man was the definition of Class!
Just look and enjoy his smile as he plays the music that was in his heart. That is the smile of true love! We WILL miss you Charlie, but you'll ALWAYS be in our hearts.
. I love Bernard Fowler's voice on this . Great sound .
Yes & Gerard Presencer on trumpet & all of them.
Charlie looks very happy & too thin!
LOVELY! You are missed Charley W🎵🎶
Charlie looked happy playing with jazz musicians. This was his true place.
Charlie Watts!!!! OMG! Pete King, Gerard Presencer AND Dave Green on bass. Now we are talking Top Drawer here! This is utterly fantastic.
RIP Mr. Watts!! ❤️
Charlie was probably the only guy with the money and the influence to put together large scale jazz projects since the heyday of big band jazz!
Jools, on a shoestring.
Don't forget Brian Setzer, swing is also jazz.
Sad, since Charlie passing I’m seeing all these great Jazz videos, I have missed out for way too long! RIP
Bernard Fowler, une découverte ! loin des stades avec les Stones. Magnifique !
RIP Charlie. Thanks for all the great music & nearly 6 decades behind the kit.
R.I.P.Charlie Watts 08/24/2021🌹🙏🕊.... Thanks for the Joy of Music in both genres Jazz and Rock..🎸🎤🎵🎷🎶🎺 ❤
I met Bernard Fowler at the Namm show in Anaheim one year when I was selling my Oboe reads. Very nice gentleman.
That's a sentence that doesn't get used to often. 👍
R.I.P Charles Robert Watts (2 June 1941 - 24 August 2021)
You were simply the best and the classiest. RIP
RIP Charlie Watts. Love your rock and roll, love your jazz.

R.I.P. Charlie. You're always our darling.
Rip Pete King, British jazz legend
Rest in peace Charlie Watts, thank you for the music.

Rip I will miss you
Thanks for the memories, Charlie Watts RIP.
I'm really impressed to hear and see this- Charlie really knows music- great-
Jazz was Charlie's first love and if it had been more mainstream than Rock'n' Roll he would have had a successful career as a Jazz drummer for 50+ years. It's very relaxing and one of the best things to come from New Orleans
Thank you, Charlie. A true groove maker, and a true gentleman.
What a class act.
Great trumpet by Gerard Presencer in here
Great sound there, Gerard! ;0)
It's beautiful.... RIP Charlie ;)
Thank you for the music
RIP to a true music legend, a great jazz drummer masquerading as a rock n' roller.
Love you Charlie, I'm a great Stones fan but he looks so happy in Jazz.
RIP Charlie Watts...
Farewell Charlie.....I loved your jazzy side.
I think when people like Brian, Ian Stewart and Bill started leaving he lost his heart for the game and just 'hung around' the Stones as he liked to call it.
The late Great ...Mr. Peter King!x
Charlie's facial expression is different when he plays Jazz. You see the feeling of ecstasy and happiness on her face when he is playing the music he loves. Something that doesn't happen when he's at the Stones where he gets a cold and indifferent expression, with no pleasure.
this is fantastic!...i love the way he plays slow tempos...with that double feeling......swings the whole thing beautifully
Good ol' Charlie. I hate how people chuckle at his reserved demeanor. As an introvert, I totally get his discomfort with being interviewed.
I agree!
Ditto !
Ohhhh Charlie 😔
une autre facette de Charlie.... très joli ce Quintet
Charlie sadness... enchantment...
He was always cool and relaxed behind the kit, way better than he was given credit for!!!

Highly delicious soft big band jazz.
RIP Charlie. Thank you.
Viva o grande Charles Robert Watts!
RIP to a legend.
Who could've possibly disliked this video? I can only think it's because Dennis Miller is in it
“CW” clearly in his “Element”
happy 75th to Charlie W
Rip not the same without you on the drums so dapper
Hasta siempre CHARLIE WATTS 🥁🥁🥁
Happy 78th Birthday Charlie ! !

Blimey, Gerrard Presencer and Pete King. Quite a band.
The Stones were Charlie’s second gig. Jazz was his true calling. To wit ..
That's it! Go and listen to Jimmy Reed, and you'll hear the Stones!!!
MUDDY WATERS TOO!
Lovely arrangement.
ADIOS GENIO 😔🌅
I really love this. But really, how do you get around that the drummer is also the drummer for the GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD !
Wow
Dennis Miller thinks he is a star, Charlie looks a bit embarrassed for him. Charlie is a true gentleman and looks like European royalty. The singer is terrific!.
The singer, Bernard Fowler, has been touring with The Stones for decades.
