Ronnie and Charlie were very good friends from what I hear. Ronnie is super bummed out about his passing...not that everyone in the band isn't. Charlie seemed comfortable around Ronnie. It's probably easier doing an interview with Ronnie...not having to talk over the top two Stones. These two both seem super easygoing.
Charlie said he’s a simple drummer. Humble man. If you’ve seen them live, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Stones don’t sound like the Stones without Charlie.
I don’t like Steve Jordan’s drumming. No offence to Steve, but Charlie was the best for them. He was Jazz. It somehow gelled, miraculously with Stones music.
His style fit in perfectly for whatever style the song was. He never over did it playing louder than what the song needed. He was the perfect to use Ronnie's term, engine.

Ronnie’s modesty is charming, and his respect for - and deference to - Charlie Watts is wonderful to see. What a fantastic interview. RIP Charlie Watts.
I saw in an interview years ago that Charlie was always a responsible big brother figure to the band. From the beginning, he was the most accomplished musician and the most tightly wired. He didn't have any addictions and was very geared towards the music. Charlie came from a jazz background where the drummer runs the band, he took that role very seriously even to the point where he punched Mick in the face for saying "my drummer" then saying "you are my fucking singer."
They're the part of the Rolling Stone's Cadre that isn't the core(the Glimmer Twins) but is vital to the band's smooth operation. Since Bill Wyman was something of an outsider, and the new bassist is "the new guy," the 4 older Rolling Stones are the main attraction - and they're often photographed that way. Woody and Charlie often could avoid the most assertive of the paparazzi and they could grin at the times when Keith and Sir Mick were bedeviled by the media flacks. I think also that they both take their music work quite seriously and they're both trying hard here to do a good interview but still have some fun with it. It's endearing to see Woody keep looking to Charlie to see if he's gone too far or not, like Charlie is the big brother here. I'm SO glad you posted this.
Lovely to see the affection Ronnie has for Charlie. Little hand touches throughout the interview. Always a look to Charlie to lead the answers. That’s pure affection and pure respect.
I think what really comes across is woodys respect for Charlie he keeps looking at Charlie to make sure his comments are OK, it's like it's his father figure. Charlie commands the respect of all the band but with woody being the younger member that respect is massive to see its that obvious.
Charlie Watts, a magnificent, organic man. Nothing artificial, just a beautiful heap of well-matured, self-effacing banter covering a deeply rooted love of life and appreciation for all those that have inspired him.
He's always been like this. I forget if it was Richards or Glyn Johns ( producer ) said that is the studio Charlie just stands there and doesn't say anything for hours. But when he does say something, everyone stops and listens. The band loves him, the band respects him and the band listens to him.
Fantastic! I love that Charlie isn't playing the game, trying to be professional about it. He is just himself, no agenda. Beautiful!!! Love it. Such a breath of fresh air.
Keith once scheduled a rehearsal with the late keyboard player of the Stones.Unfortunately he had a heart attack and died before he could show up to the rehearsal.
