9:06 Emil needs to learn about world history, not just black history. Dreads are not and have never been a strictly black thing.
CENTURION (2010)
Directed by Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Game of Thrones, Hellboy)
Starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, Imogen Poots, Liam Cunningham, David Morrissey, JJ Feild, Riz Ahmed & Noel Clarke
If you’ve never seen this movie, you are in for a TREAT.
I'd like to suggest 3 films for your consideration PATTON (1970), BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) and 48 HRS. (1982). I think any of them would be great for a Manly Movie Monday. :D
Oliver Reed wasnt supposed to die. The original movie was supposed to end in him, not Djimon. Thank goodness for ridley and his team’s brilliance and cgi. They were able to piece together oliver’s death scene to complete his performance instead of recasting it. With djimon ending the movie and all the changes, i think it gave more depth to this masterpiece!
I do love Dijmon ending it. He has such a warmth, it totally works
Reed was a hellraiser, I was in Malta and saw the pub he had gone on a massive drinking binge a month after he died.
The main senator is played by Derek Jacobi, who starred in the BBC 70s adaptation of I, Claudius, a truly amazing drama series about the Roman Empire, which is a huge inspiration on Game of Thrones (and like GOT, a true who-is-who of famous english actors). It play more as a very long stage play than a big budget swords and sandals epic but still great, in my opinion.
agreed!
Give Derek Jacobi a grocery list to read, and he'll make it the most compelling thing you've ever heard.
He was also in underworld evolution as the immortal father
That Marcus Aurellius tent shot 13ish minutes in is so good: his bust in full glow w/ deep red curtains, behind the living, old, shadowed set against faded curtains is so great
Best movie ever. Before credits, when that Hans Zimmer hits. 🤌and Lisa Gerrard stars singing as that sunset fades to black. BRAVO
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?
IS THIS NOT WHAT YOU ARE HERE FOR!?
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture!
Hugh Jackman was actually considered for the role of Maximus while Russell Crowe was considered for Wolverine, but Crowe turned down X MEN to star in GLADIATOR, while Jackman played Wolverine.
Antonio Banderas, Tom Sizemore, Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise were considered as well.
The opening Battle scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morrocco, and finally, the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta, lasting for 19 weeks.
The film was dedicated to Oliver Reed, Proximo, as the actor died of a heart attack during filming.
Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result of them.
The scene where he's fighting Tigris of Gaul, the tiger almost killed him. Crowe walked away without a scratch on him.
Bested me to it. But well said.
👏👍
Shows up wearing a Roma shirt to watch Gladiator. 💛❤
Scott's a real one.
* nerd bow *
@@ScottKaneI’m just here to forward you to the “Thinkin ‘Bout Rome” Jason Momoa SNL bit
Commodus’ actual death is hilarious. He was killed by a gladiator, but it was during his bath and he was choked out lol
1:06:56 The thing I like about the way Maximus kills Commodus, is that, like you guys said, he looks him in the eyes while he does it. How have we seen Commodus kill people? He smothered his ailing father in the middle of a hug. He sends Maximus's own men to execute him while he's not even decent enough to be there. He sends troops to murder an innocent woman and child and have their bodies put on display. He sends troops to kill gladiators in the night. And finally and most importantly, he **stabs Maximus in the back** before their duel: the act that is synonymous with betrayal and trickery. Every way he kills is underhanded and dishonorable. This snake of a man stabbed him in the back, and Maximus has the decency and honor to look him in the eye when he kills him.
Also a nice call back to the line “ a
Soldier has the advantage of being able to look his enemy in the eye.
This. This is the film we MMM fans have been waiting for. Well, this or Braveheart. Or Tombstone. EITHER WAY. Great film.
Tombstone is on the docket
"I did not say I knew @@SeanTanktop, I said he responded to my comment once!"
@@SeanTanktop you guys gotta do bone tomahawk, too!
"He knows who Lucius Varus is..."
Well, yeah... he was a Roman emperor.
Homeboy had an emperor grandfather on his mother's side and an emperor father (ok, and then uncle Commodus, too).
The boy was flexing.
I meant, he didn’t realize he was talking to Lucilla’s son until he heard his name and he talked about his father.
There are disagreements to how Aurelius died. He died of a hemorrhage, but most couldn't agree on what brought it on. Some say it was the plague, some say smallpox. There were other illnesses going through his camps possibly caught something his troops had 🤷
Australian Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance provided the vocals and co-wrote the score with Zimmer. Dead can Dance were an amazing band and 100% worth checking out
It's very much like the 1960's film "The Fall of the Roman Empire". At 29:53 far left in the crowd, there is a film crew (blue jeans and white t-shirt).
I could SWEAR it's Friday 😂😂😂
Ben-Hur (1959) is a must watch by you.
I can't wait to see what the 2nd is gonna be about. It really doesn't matter I'm gonna watch it 😂
When the emperor yells “Am I not merciful?” That was improvised. It fits so well
Summary of the reaction: hahahahaha hahahaha
Gladiator, Lord Of The Rings, The Scorpion King, The Last Samurai, Troy, 300 and Clash Of Titans.
the Sword & Sandal revival of the early 2000s.
Which Clash of the Titans? For me has to be the original, but i M a child of the 80’s! And love stop motion! Ray Harryhausen’s work is amazing!
Did you guys ever get around to viewing "Slapshot"?
I watched a documentary about Commodus a couple of weeks ago. He was more interested in "being"/playing a gladiator and ironically ended up getting assassinated by his gladiator trainer.
Narcissus was a slave and a wrestler, but not a gladiator.
@@happyslapsgiving5421 Wiki: "Narcissus was employed as a wrestling partner and personal trainer to Commodus in order to train him for his self-indulgent appearances in the Colosseum as a gladiator".
So "gladiator trainer" would just mean that he helped train Commodus for his gladiator fantasies.
MF DOOM helmet scene always been my favourite.
26,000 arrows went up in the air filming the very first battle at the start of the film, 10,000 normal ones, and 16,000 with flames.
Already great friend simply be the Canes jersey
GO CANES!!!
32:54 In the words of Walter Heisenberg Hartwell White: I said Fuck you!... AND YOUR EYEBROWS!
I don't think I ever noticed how "are you not entertained" mirrors "am I not merciful".....such good storytelling, I'm still noticing things two decades later
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe and Happy New Year 🕛🎊😊
I'd love to see you guys watch 1979's The Warriors
I forgot how great this movie was.
A couple of fun facts:
Apparently they did something subtle with Joaquin Phoenix's makeup to reflect his character's decline into madness and tyranny. Commodus is supposed to look slightly more pale and sickly every time we see him. Like he's becoming undead. Or a statue. It's so faint as to be subliminal.
There are a couple of Arnold Schwarzenegger connections in this movie. The giant gladiator, Hagen, is played by Rolf Moeller, former competitive bodybuilder who was Arnold's stunt double. Moeller also went on to play Conan in the cheesy Conan The Adventurer tv show back in the late 90's. Also, the retired gladiator Tigris of Gaul was played by Sven-Ole Thorsen, another former bodybuilder who came to America around the same time as Arnold and tried to break into movies. He wasn't as successful, but he still pops up here and there playing memorable thugs.
Interesting thing about the accents. There is a theory that, were Romans to speak modern English, they would do so with a British or a Welsh accent. The basis of this theory is the idea that the Welsh people are the descendants of Romanized Britons who were left behind when the Empire withdrew from the island. Not sure how much validity there is to this theory, but it's fun to contemplate.
I thought I was crazy for a while during the first battle hearing the “Germanic” chants. They sounded very similar to the chants in Zulu. It turns out they were 😂😂
The director cut shows the emporor going even more insane
Tigris of Gaul, the retired gladiator Maximus fought would have been assumed to be from Gaul so not really Slavic but more Central Europe like France, Belgium, Swiss, German 👍🏼
Center of Europe is Poland Czech and Slovakia ,Germany and the rest is Western Europe
the actor was Danish.
so, yeah, center Europe, "of Gaul" given as honorary title to a German-ish man maybe?
10:35 there is not a single Roman emperor who didn't chose his son as his successor if he had a son
I'm sure there was one in the 1000 year history
@@christoperwallace6197
Name him
@@christoperwallace6197 Technically Tiberius wasn't Augustus's son, but a distant cousin whom he "adopted" and named his heir. That kind of thing happened in Imperial Rome just as often as straight father-to-son succession did.
Even still, that wasn't how it was "supposed" to work. The Imperator was supposed to name the best man for the job as his successor, regardless of blood relation. Of course in actuality it rarely worked out like that. That's pretty much what Marcus Aurelius meant to do with Maximus here.
My dad took me to see this in theaters when I was 12. He had no idea what we we were in for lol. Cap spitting off Roman history during this movie made me so happy, I wish I had friends who were that patient to let me go off like that. I'm pretty sure Oliver Reed had one of his infamous drinking binges during the filming of this movie (him and Ridley's dynamic must've been interesting). Apparently he was found at a bar with sailors or french legionnaires (don't remember which). Commodus is only second to Maximus in this movie and that's saying something. He is so scared of the people/mob of Rome that he becomes more ruthless than them in the end. So many layers in this movie. True classic.
Edit: I'm with Sean, Proximo is my favorite character.
"I wish I had friends who were that patient to let me go off like that" made me smile.
Watched this whole vid thinking about that glass jar by the candle jars. Definitely never drunkenly grabbed the wrong glass by mistake and poured hot wax down my chest. Nope, couldn’t be me
I love this film, 1 of my top 5. I’m looking forward to seeing what Ridley Scott and Pedro will bring to the sequel!!!! I’m sure Djimon is in it too
Emil's synopsis is perfect.
34:25
the _arena_ there, is real... it's an abandoned stadium on the coast of Malta, facing the ocean, so the background would have been a perfect natural blue screen.
so, the _stands_ there, and the _spectators,_ are all CGI.
can you tell the seam?... and this is 20-year-old technology at this point!
the other stadium in Africa, that was 100% real... it was built on a wood frame and plastered with mud.
"Kinda Nicole Kidman" oh the disrespect with the fabulous Connie Nielsen!
Roma Victor!
Any chance of The Expanse happening on this channel?
perhaps
You laugh at the most dramatic scenes, what about you?
It's wild how Russell changed throughout the years

By the way #free_palestine #Boycott_israel
Would be easier of hammas would go away. In any case, it's fucked up the civilians are now paying the price.
@@christoperwallace6197 In March 2019, Netanyahu told his Likud colleagues: "Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas... This is part of our strategy to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank."
Too much overtalking the movie
It's a reaction. Go fucking watch the movie if you want to watch the movie.
No, I’m not entertained. Still waiting on Loki. 🙄 Nobody likes a quitter.
Your blabber ruinid the movie
Just go watch the movie if you want to watch the movie.
too much talking...at least respect the ending.
Maximus would be a trump supporter.
The war veteran man of honor that sacrificed his own life to actively give up political power would support the draft dodging conman who engaged in insurrection against his own country so he could unlawfully retain power? Woof. Sure, dude. Get offline and get help.
Maximus the Legionary support Trump the draft-dodger? Don't think so
Absolutely not😂
Gladiator is a BRILLIANT movie. I have no idea what they are gonna do in G2, I just hope it follows its coherence and awesome writing and narrative as the first one. And no matter how often I watched it, Djimon's line ALWAYS gets me... 🥲And let's take a moment to appreciate Ridley's talent to improvise production 'issues' (the 'All the Money in the World' situation may be the best example 🤭😬). One of the best Russell's works. 🥰🤎
