Clicked to watch immediately - love this movie! As a woman, I really appreciate how Lucilla is written/depicted. As an only child who is closer to my dad than my mom and grew up as a tomboy (varsity soccer/basketball, climbed trees...etc.), it hit me when Emperor Marcus Aurelius tells her "If only you had been born a man, what a Caesar you would have made." I liked that you guys also recognized her tricky position, having to juggle her loyalty to her father, love for her son, feelings/guilt towards Maximus, and managing/fending off her gross younger brother (Lucilla and Commodus were real people btw - full blood siblings... 😬 though his behavior towards her in this film is fictional). About Lucilla and Maximus, it seems to me they "dated" or something like it when they were younger, but being a princess, she probably had to end it or chose to end it to marry her late husband (again, a real person who was a co-ruler to her father... an arranged marriage, of course) - maybe there were unresolved feelings about how her and Maximus ended things. It was so interesting to see your reactions and hear your perspectives to this movie as men/fathers/sons. 👏

I hope you’ll all choose to watch The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)! Richard Harris (aka Dumbledore/Marcus Aurelius) is fantastic in that one too. The original story was written by Alexandre Dumas and it’s another tale of betrayal, and the book is even referenced in the Shawshank Redemption. I always look forward to your reactions!
Yes! The Count of Monte Cristo is my absolute favorite movie and novel! I would love to see this channel react to that movie! I love it that a young Henry Cavill (Superman) is in it as well!
If you like the feel and look of this movie, I highly recommend watching The Last Of The Mohicans from 1992. Music, cinematography, and acting all top tier. Stars Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, and Wes Studi and many other amazing actors. So good!
Dont get me started on this movie cause imma watch it for the hundrenth time and Imma still go through all the emotions. I have errands to run today 😂😂😭😭
That ending ALWAYS gets me teary eyed. Don't worry OAK, another 40+ year old man here, tearing up and hit with the massive feels. When the song hits.....
This movie is a masterpiece. The last time I saw it was incredible : I had the opportunity to see it projected in a concert hall. The entire soundtrack was played live by an orchestra, the whole 2hrs. Now, the ending always makes me cry. But hearing ''Now we are free'' live, with an incredible soloist was truely something else. When the movie ended, the crowd let it all out. I've never seen such a long standing ovation at the end of a performance. We just couldn't stop clapping. I'll never forget that night !
From the opening scene to the end just a masterpiece. I'm a woman and this is my favourite movie and that hans zimmer score, just perfection. Loved this reaction ❤❤❤
Absolutely fantastic film, and I hope in future you give "Master and Commander" a try as it's another Russell Crowe movie where he shines in the role. Keep up the good work guys.
I love Master and Commander as well! Period piece that portrays the intense life, culture, and battle at sea. I really loved how the doctor was a cellist like myself and played my favorite piece from Johann Sebastian Bach, Prelude from Cello Suite No 1. I would love this channel to react to that movie!
First off: Welcome Back, Diamond Dave! I'm glad to see you back on the panel again. This whole era of motion pictures - Gladiator, LOTR, Harry Potter - was a renaissance of fantastic imagination and superb writing. We have not seen such quality storytelling for a generation, and most likely won't see it for another. Thank you, guys, for keeping the hearth-fires burning!
The kid who plays Maximus son, did a movie called Life is Beautiful, an Italian movie about WWII. If you never watched that one, I recommend it a lot. It is beautiful and one of the most heartbreaking movies I ever watched. It is truly, an amazing one. The movie was nominated for a few Oscars and won some like Best Foreign Film and best actor.
I was 13 when this movie came out and I went to the theater with my two best friends. We loved it. In fact we three went to see Hans Zimmer live here in Lisbon in May and we cried listening to Lisa Gerrard singing the epic soundtrack of Gladiator while they were showing some images on the big screen, of the scene when Maximus is dying and seeing his wife and son. 🥺❤
I had zero expectations going to the cinema with a friend watching a stupid arena Gladiator movie... boy where we shellshocked of what we were witnessing... and after all... we cried like little babygirls... what an epic movie and one of the best of all time!
The director and Joaquin are coming out with a movie about Napoleon this autumn. This was Oliver Reed's last movie. He stole every scene he was in. He was terrific in the 1970s Three Musketeers.
Gladiator is just god tier film making. It's one of those movies any director would have loved to say they made. It's up there with any movie ever as it's super rewatchable once in a while. Always hooks you which is strange for a 3 hour epic.
This to me is one of the best pieces of cinema ever created! So excited about this reaction. Also as a young lad this was the first film to make me tear up and get emotional.. will never forgot when the first time a film hits you right
For a movie that is so well written and so well acted and so well performed it always amazes me that the script had not been finished by the time they started shooting. Some of the lines were provided by the actors themselves. Like Russel Crow came up with "Strength and honor." When he was a boy, Crow attended a school that had a Latin phrase that translated to "wisdom and honor" or something similar to that, so he pitched "strength and honor" to the director, and they went with it.
I cannot tell you how much I cried at the end of this film. Russell Crowe is just magnificent, and Joaquin. And it was the last film of the brilliant Oliver Reed. Just such a moving film. Edit and Lisa Gerard’s vocals! I crushed really hard on Russell during this film. And I LOVE Oliver.
I love that in all movie reaction videos, the "tough looking big guy" is the one that shed more tears 😄. Good quality of human being right there. Keep it up guys. 😌👍
One of my favorite movies! 2 best scenes: 1. Commodus confesses his feelings to his father. Joaquin’s performance in that scene broke my heart. 2. The final fight. Maximus, fading in and out of consciousness, opening that can of whup-ass on Commodus and winning. A great depiction of grit and determination in the face of certain death. And I love the music as well, esp. at the end. Lisa Gerard’s voice is otherworldly.
I remember seeing this in theaters - I was just an 11 year old girl but my dad wanted to take me and I'm so glad he did! I remember the experience so vividly and it's a fond memory with my (since passed away) father 💙 Still one of my favorites.
My folks looked at me like I was crazy because I used to silence the room when the trailer for the Gladiator played on the tele. Even at 15 I knew Russell Crowe was The man. This was the first DVD I owned (I bought 3: Gladiator, Patriot, & Coyote Ugly...YUP). I'm envious that in this era, Diamond D gets to experience this perfect film for the first time. What a treat.
this is within my top 50 movies all time, cant wait to see how you like this one, Russell Crowe truly has 1 of the best acting performances in this movie!
I am CACKLING At the manscape advertising 🤣🤣🤣 that's how you do paid advertising. With a sense of humour and taking the piss 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣🤣 Movie hasn't even started yet and I'm already enjoying myself 😂😂😂
I am not a man, so, therefore, not a "man's man!" 🤣🤣 But, "Gladiator" is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies, EVER! The story is awesome, the actors were perfection, and, yes, the music was great. Also, watching Diamond Dave watching this, and watching y'all watch him, was priceless! Great reaction, as always.❤️ (One more thing, after having kids, yes, it is very different).
I'll never forget my odd experience watching this movie in the theater. The woman sitting next to me fell asleep a quarter into the movie - heavy breathing to lite snores. She woke up in the middle of the movie and fell back to sleep. Woke up during the final battle and started crying when the movie ended. I don't know.
Another great Russell Crowe movie is A Beautiful Mind. He won an Oscar for Gladiator, but I think he should have won for A Beautiful Mind as well. Much different from this movie, but absolutely captivating and will keep you enthralled
I was 12 when it came out. My father taking me to see it was one of his best decisions when raising me up 😄 It kind of spawned interest in history, even if movie itself is not very historical, and also showed how a true stoic man should carry himself.
i love this channel, the diversity in the selection of reactions is great, from masterpieces like gladiator or lotr to series like avatar and i enjoy every single one of them. you made me even watch twilight, never thought that would happen.
I was one of the Barbarians extras in the first battle of the movie .. ☘️ I was a student in the local University.. Was filmed in Bourne Woods .. The forest was to be cut but the local council allowed it to be burned … Some of my friends got an extra 2 weeks work as they had to learn to march .. was an amazing experience 😀
Oliver Reed, (Proximo) passed away before production ended in Malta. So, they finished his screen time with a combination of unused takes, body doubles, and CGI-graphing his face for the prison escape scene.
Diamond Dave had very different interests than me as kid growing up. I heard only the title name Gladiator and was excited before saw trailer. I love ancient history from Egypt,China, Greece,Rome, to the medieval ages. Some of the most interesting and violent times of human history.
Thats awesome actually. This type of movie just never appealed to me at a young age. Glad I saw it now and I have more appreciation than I would've as a kid.
I’ve watched this so many times and just realized the actor who played the original Dumbledore was in it. Another movie he was in that’s AMAZING - The Count of Monte Cristo. Would love to see you guys react to that!
Ive seen this movie countless times and the every time, the scene of Maximus returning home to find his wife and son murdered and his descent into sorrow never fails to reduce me to a sobbing mess.. such real, raw and unapologetic acting on crowes part.. ❤
One of my all-time favourite soundtracks. Was playing it today, so this is perfect timing. Also, I agree with the Oak - it's one of my top 10 films. And I ALWAYS cry 😢❤
This is an example of a perfect film. If you watch the opening shot carefully you see Maximus woefully gaze upon the battlefield, look away then have his gaze averted by a robin, a small and simple beauty of nature distracts his gaze, then he's immediately drawn back to the reality of the battlefield. A simple shot but one that explains so much about his character without even a a word of dialogue. He's a simple man who has strong morals and values the simple things in life. While he's a great general of the roman armies and well respected leader he loves the simple beauties of life.
SO glad you sat and watched this with the bois Dave! It has to be a part of every Patriots emotional lexicon and now it's a part of yours!👏😁👍 One of things I love most abut this film is that Derek Jacobi (Senator Gracchus) is in this, dancing the dance one must do with Emperors😆 The greatest theatrical TV show ever made about the Roman Empire was called 'I, Claudius' and Derek Jacobi played Emperor Claudius, the focus of the show and his journey navigating the perils of royal Rome til he finds one day he himself is Emperor. I grew up with a mother who was REALLY into Egyptian History and archaeology so my love for the Past and History was something I had at a VERY young age. At the time you wouldn't find most kids watching that kind of show but I LOVED it. I still do. I watch it every couple years as I own my own copy. Pretty amazing what can be done in 13 episodes! If you've never seen it, do yourself a personal and watch it sometime. The theater they give you is AMAZING, by classically trained stage performers like Patrick Stewart, Derek Jacobi, Brian Blessed and John Hurt...all young men at the time as it was made in 1976. The only thing I've ever seen even TRY to come close (it's a different era in Time however) was Anthony Hopkins' King Lear (2018). Though King Lear be a true cinematic set of performances by Masters of the Craft, it is given to the audience as more of a theatrical piece and true to the dialogue which tends to lose a great deal of interested viewers. Shakespeare isn't for everyone😆 Was a great watch, super fun!! Thx for sharing fellers!🤠
This is one of those movies that I will absolutely watch over and over again and never get tired of it. It's THAT good, and I love watching people react to movies like this.
Masterpiece. It’s worth mentioning that Oliver Reed’s character was supposed to die in battle, showing hire great he was as a gladiator. Because of his premature death, the character is executed more quickly.
I love the addition of the gladiator that says he served with him. That means that slave knew who Maximus was, and said nothing. Im sure he would of been rewarded for snitching him out, but he didnt.
Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And in this life or the next, I shall have my vengeance. God, I love those lines! The delivery sends shivers down my spine!!
Great reaction guys. I saw this 6 times in the theater when it came out. This is only one of two movies I paid to watch multiple times on the big screen. One of the greatest movies ever made. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
I graduated from high school one year before this movie (2000). This is what I believed a real man to be, past the fighting the blood. Strengthen and Honor has been deleted from men today, but I truly inspired to be Maximus as a young man. Honorable truthful and strong.
I appreciate how the writers demonstrated Maximus' tactical prowess and bravery instead of just telling us about it. During one of the first scenes he overrides an order to move back their artillery because the danger to their cavalry is "acceptable." This might make the viewer think he is a callous commander who uses his men as pawns. The movie flips this on it's head immediately when Maximus goes to lead the cavalry charge himself. He wouldn't order his men to take a risk he wouldn't take himself.
That beginning forest battle was mostly legit. Authorities had earmarked that forest to come down in a controlled fire. Ridley says "Let me do it for you".
If yall enjoyed this movie, I would absolutely recommend Last of the Mochicans. Its more historically accurate, the cast is phenomenal, and (fun fact) Daniel Day Lewis spent a month in the wilderness with his props to prepare for that film
Hey, Oak! Gladiator is tied with Braveheart for my favorite movie of all time, but I am a 115-pound, heterosexual female. I know what you're saying about it being a man's man movie, because what man's man wouldn't want to be as bad-ass as Maximus, but I think anyone who appreciates honor and valor would love this movie!
When we bought our first DVD player we got to choose 2 free dvd's with it - we chose Blazing Saddles and Gladiator. That was about 30 years ago and the movie STILL makes me cry at the end. You can say what you like about Russel Crowe but his acting in this move was nothing short of outstanding. He made you believe in the Spaniard. He was a warrior who only wanted to go home to his wife and child - he was offered the ultimate in power but didn't want it because he knew himself and knew what he truly wanted in life and it wasn't Rome.
Richard Harris was incredible playing Marcus Aurelius, a wise, humble, compassionate, kind, selfless, and moral ruler. The reason he chose Maximus to be the protector of Rome, and not Commodus, was because he is similar to him and not corrupted by politics.
I cant believe I am saying this but I did not mind ONE BIT about the ad at the beginning. I legit watched the whole thing. I never do that so know that I love this channel! xD
I was 9 when this came out and about 2 years into moving to America from Colombia. I remember my parents loved this movie so much in theaters that when it came out on DVD they went to store bought a brand new high end TV and called the entire family to put them onto this movie. The living room was packed but I wasn’t able to watch bc I was too young. When I finally watched it for myself I completely understood why they loved it so much. Gladiator might be one of those movies that has a complete story from beginning to end. The complete hero’s journey told. Epic and unforgettable. I hope Gladiator 2 doesn’t fumble
Gladiator is brilliant. And each time we watch it hits different on many different perspectives. Hans Zimmer composed one of the most perfect scores of all time. Is by far my favorite of his (and I loooove The Lion King and Interstellar). Ridley Scott was blessed when he got this movie. Russell, Djimon and Joaquim just showed how exceptional actors they are. The 'not yet' part still gets me emotional. 🥲 Beautiful, just beautiful! 👏👏👏👏👏💞
It was supposed to be Oliver Reed burying the little statuettes in the blood there at the end, Juba having died previously. But when Reed suddenly died leaving a fourth of the filming yet to be completed, they had to scramble to work things out. CGI and edited out footage already shot helped but they kept Juba "alive" for the ending. Good thing they did as Juba will be in the sequel being filmed.
My sister used to work for Cinesite (UK special effects company). Once, I went to a work event with her and she introduced me to the "guy who modeled the colloseum in Gladiator". I think his name was Phil Borg? I was starstruck😂
What's even crazier about this masterpiece of a movie, is that time constraints forced Ridley and Russell to commit to the project without a finished script. Ridley wrote it as he filmed it and a lot of this dialog is improvised as well as manifested. Completed this film in about four to six months.
actually they got permission to burn that section of the forest down because it was going to be burned anyway in a controlled burn by the fire department , so its all real there !
I just got home, from visiting Rome on my honeymoon these last 5 days, and this has just popped up soooo watching this. Had a 3 hour guided tour round the colosseum yesterday, amazing!!
One of my favorite scenes in this movie is the first battle for a couple of reasons. One, I love world history and this movie delivered on catapults, ballistas, and the sheer force of the Roman military. Plus the fact that Commodus, Marcus Aurelius, and Lucilla are real historical figures, even if their story was tweaked for the film. Secondly, the battle is practical with the fire destroying the forest. Ridley Scott found out a patch of land was scheduled for deforestation in Surrey, so he offered to assist lol. This has been one of my favorite movies since I first watched it in theaters when I was 12 years old! Great reaction gentleman!
First time seeing Dave in one of your reaction videos and I immediately knew I would appreciate his reaction when he pointed out he was looking forward to hearing Hanz Zimmers music in Gladiator.
Hell yeah, would love to see their reaction to "The Count of Monte Christo"
If you like the feel and look of this movie, I highly recommend watching The Last Of The Mohicans from 1992. Music, cinematography, and acting all top tier. Stars Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, and Wes Studi and many other amazing actors. So good!
Ugh.....so damn good.
Dont get me started on this movie cause imma watch it for the hundrenth time and Imma still go through all the emotions. I have errands to run today 😂😂😭😭
Fantastic movie. AND with also with a great score. Nice tip! 👍
I fell in love with Uncas.
Brilliant movie! I would love a reaction to it.
Yes, please watch Master and Commander. It is also outstanding!
Yus! Master & Commander is based on Patrick O’Brien’s novel series, probably the best historical fiction I’ve ever read.
I would like to add the Matrix and Titanic. Just the attention to detail wrt Titanic and the practical effects...
Life Is Beautiful is an outstanding film. So heartbreaking and yet full of humour.
Fabulous movie! Love how Commodus’s eyes look progressively more snake-like during the movie… such a great villain!
Such a good movie! But can we talk about that ad?! Cause that right there was a masterpiece 👌🏽
We appreciate this! 🤜🤛
The ending gets tears out of me every time. Without fail. Even when only watching a reaction to it.
When Lucius says "I’m Maximus, saviour of Rome!" I think everyone watching that scene immediately went "OH SHIT!!" 😱
Love watching The Oak transform into the Sapling...LOVE YOU BROTHER!!!!
❤❤❤ -Oak
I am a female and this film stays in my top 5 for sure! So glad you guys did this reaction! I will forever “Be Entertained” by this film 🙌
🤜🤛
this is within my top 50 movies all time, cant wait to see how you like this one, Russell Crowe truly has 1 of the best acting performances in this movie!
I am CACKLING At the manscape advertising 🤣🤣🤣 that's how you do paid advertising. With a sense of humour and taking the piss 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣🤣
Movie hasn't even started yet and I'm already enjoying myself 😂😂😂
😂😂🤜🤛
I am not a man, so, therefore, not a "man's man!" 🤣🤣 But, "Gladiator" is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies, EVER! The story is awesome, the actors were perfection, and, yes, the music was great. Also, watching Diamond Dave watching this, and watching y'all watch him, was priceless! Great reaction, as always.❤️
(One more thing, after having kids, yes, it is very different).
Cicero is what I call a true friend, even when Maximus was a gladiator he was still loyal
Maximus a true soldier. He finishes the mission and then waits for permission before he finally goes home.
"Go to them."
Another great Russell Crowe movie is A Beautiful Mind. He won an Oscar for Gladiator, but I think he should have won for A Beautiful Mind as well. Much different from this movie, but absolutely captivating and will keep you enthralled
I was 12 when it came out. My father taking me to see it was one of his best decisions when raising me up 😄
It kind of spawned interest in history, even if movie itself is not very historical, and also showed how a true stoic man should carry himself.
Master and Commander is another Russell Crowe film that I think you guys would love. Super underrated. Awesome content as always Guys!
Definitely this movie.
i love this channel, the diversity in the selection of reactions is great, from masterpieces like gladiator or lotr to series like avatar and i enjoy every single one of them. you made me even watch twilight, never thought that would happen.
It's really a shame Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore.
Yes they do WOKE BLACK AND 1 dwarf 6 trans WTF it called
One of my all-time favourite soundtracks. Was playing it today, so this is perfect timing. Also, I agree with the Oak - it's one of my top 10 films. And I ALWAYS cry 😢❤
Let's us also give thanks to the wonderful Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance fame) for her sublime vocals to Mr. Zimmer's score.
It has to be a part of every Patriots emotional lexicon and now it's a part of yours!👏😁👍
One of things I love most abut this film is that Derek Jacobi (Senator Gracchus) is in this, dancing the dance one must do with Emperors😆
The greatest theatrical TV show ever made about the Roman Empire was called 'I, Claudius' and Derek Jacobi played Emperor Claudius, the focus of the show and his journey navigating the perils of royal Rome til he finds one day he himself is Emperor.
Shakespeare isn't for everyone😆
Was a great watch, super fun!! Thx for sharing fellers!🤠
So happy to see you guys react to this movie. Actors on their best performances with amazing cinematography, just all around amazing movie.
One of my favorites of all times. As archeaologist and historian this is beautiful. What and epic movie and amazing cast. Also as a spaniard so proud
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture.
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?
IS THIS NOT WHAT YOU ARE HERE FOR!?"
Joaquin Phoenix played an incredible roll. I have been a fan of his work ever since. Joker was the last time I saw him and he hasn't lost a step.
Not sure of the source, but when Johnny Cash saw this he wanted
Joaquin to portray him in "Walk the Line". Makes sense.
That was the most entertaining Manscape ad I've ever watched lmao
I also finally just saw this movie in the last year or so(I'm 37). This is such a beautiful movie. I cry a lot watching it, but it's just so amazing 💜
🤜🤛
@@jillfromatlanta427 Man, Djimon is one of the most underestimated actors ever. I really hope this sequel is good. 🥲
I listened to the score from this and last of the Mohicans on repeat! Gladiator is such an amazing movie, loved your reaction to it!
Love the scene where he defeats an entire army with just a telephone.
My sister used to work for Cinesite (UK special effects company). Once, I went to a work event with her and she introduced me to the "guy who modeled the colloseum in Gladiator". I think his name was Phil Borg? I was starstruck😂
So glad you guys revisited this classic masterpiece
What's even crazier about this masterpiece of a movie, is that time constraints forced Ridley and Russell to commit to the project without a finished script. Ridley wrote it as he filmed it and a lot of this dialog is improvised as well as manifested. Completed this film in about four to six months.
Your ad was amazing! I might not need to trim my beard but your skit made me laugh so much!
Gladiator. 10/10 film .✨⭐️
Oh, by the way, you guys’ Manscaped promo was camp perfection! 🩵😂
I love the anger in your eyes when you see Maximus's home destroyed...the sheer will you all acted accordingly. Love this reaction.
actually they got permission to burn that section of the forest down because it was going to be burned anyway in a controlled burn by the fire department , so its all real there !
I just got home, from visiting Rome on my honeymoon these last 5 days, and this has just popped up soooo watching this. Had a 3 hour guided tour round the colosseum yesterday, amazing!!
29:46 "What if one of those arrows misses and goes up in the crowd?"
Me: "Some of you may die, but that's a sacrifice i'm willing to make."
i saw this movie a thousand times and it still gives me chills to this day.
i can watch this movie a zillion times and when that famous quotes are uttered on screen, goosebumps always.
Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius/Dumbledore) is the father of Jarred Harris from Mad Men and Chernobyl
First time seeing Dave in one of your reaction videos and I immediately knew I would appreciate his reaction when he pointed out he was looking forward to hearing Hanz Zimmers music in Gladiator.
I love music and film scores especially. So glad you guys could introduce Dave to the work of art that is Gladiator 👏👏👏
