If you want to avoid expensive shipping due to us living in Australia, here is a little work around on Amazon (can do the same on ebay using www.ebay.com.au) which some people have used and made it a lot more affordable. We just wanted to share this with those who this may concern.
    1. Go to top right of Amazon homepage where it has your country flag and language showing
    2. Click change country/region on dropdown menu
    3. Change country to Australia
    4. Amazon page will change all products to those in Australian warehouses. Put items in cart, send to S&P PO box address as you normally would. Should be minimal shipping because its shipping from within Australia

I think yall deeply misread quintus. Quintus warned maximus to be smart, and maximus ignored him. Commodus was the new emperor, if you wanted to supplant him you had to be tactful, feign loyalty like the sister did. When Quintus saw that Maximus' plan was to put on his armor and accuse the new emperor of murder with no evidence , he chose the "smart" decision to remain loyal to the new emperor and follow his orders, as soldiers do. But maximus was still his friend, and he still had no love for Commodus. So in the final fight, when he sees that maximus has the opportunity to kill Commodus, he makes sure Commodus doesn't receive any outside and unfair help.
Quintus reminds me a little of varys with ned stark, varys tried his best to help ned, but when he realized ned was determined to make all the wrong choices, he chose not to die alongside him and live to fight another day. I dont think quintus or Varys are "snakes" for that

After Commodus took power, sure. But he was clearly part of the army at the start of the movie and was not the Praetorian Prefect. which presumably was his position later in the movie. He may have believed Commodus' version of events, and thus didn't see himself as betraying anyone. Or, he may have been given an ultimatum, like Maximus. Whatever happened, Quintus obviously felt guilt. This is shown in the scene from the extended version of the movie, just before Commodus stabs Maximus. "I'm a soldier. I obey," Quintus told Maximus.

    • @jarsky
      @jarsky 3 місяці тому +2

He didnt sell anyone out really. He followed orders and kept to the rules of arm to arm combat in the Gladiator arena. @@887levi probably not, but couldn't he actually be the Praetorian Prefect in the beggining also? Considering the person he's protecting, Marcus Aurelius, is also on the battlefield. It's true that he would likely be by the Emperor's side, not by his General's, but I think some Praetorian Prefect also commanded armies. During Domitian's time for instance, Fuscus initiated a campaign against Decebalus, which ended in disaster, with the destruction of the Fifth Legion.
But as you say the most likely solution is that he was just an officer in the army at the time

Spot on. Quintus is a veteran soldier, but even more importantly he is an professional officer: his job is to follow orders as much to give orders. People like him are the base of every (successful) army. Yes he is loyal, not to his friend, but to Rome and always to Rome. As Maximus said :"I will always serve Rome".
As other people said, he doesn't know what the emperor said to Maximus, nor he has any proof against Commodus. Legally, Maximus is a traitor/rebel: refusing to recognize the new emperor is an act of treason/rebellion.

Gladiator is a true classic and populated by some top tier legends - the notorious, irrepressible OG bad boy Oliver Reed (who died during the making of the film), Derek Jacobi (who rose to fame in the BBC drama I, Claudius) and of course that other legendary bad boy brit - none other than Dumbledore himself - Richard Harris (disappointed you missed that one!). From the bits and pieces I've seen of 300, it appears to be heavily stylized & action orientated (with no shortage of that trademark Snyder slow-mo). Gladiator - whilst possessing its fair share of action - is first and foremost a drama. Sharing a historical setting doesn't necessarily make them comparable when they're not the same type of movie. A bit like comparing - say - Star Wars with Interstellar.

Also, Commodus actually fought in the Colosseum, except he dressed up as Hercules and killed unarmed prisoners. The real Commodus was a legit psycho, so his portrayal in this movie isn't too farfetched.

A lot of people miss that Quintus was the commander of the Praetorian Guard, who are the Caesar's personal bodyguards, so he wasn't betraying Maximus at the start of the movie. He was merely doing his job following his boss's orders now that Marcus Aurelius had died and Commodus was the new emperor.
At the end of the movie when he refuses to help Commodus when he's fighting Maximus at the Colisseum and he orders the Praetorian Guard to not give him a sword, now that's when he actually betrayed his duty, but he did it for the greater good after what he did to Maximus and his family had weighted on him for a while.
There's a deleted scene from the Director's Cut where he's shown being conflicted about Commodus and disapproving of his behavior as emperor about two thirds into the movie.
Maximus always talks to Quintus with respect, even after ordering his execution and at the end of the movie when he instructs him to release the soldiers and fulfill Marcus Aurelius' wishes, because Maximus understands what the Praetorian Guard is as well as who Quintus is and why he did what he did, and he also understands the importance of seeing Quintus order the guard to not help Commodus at the very end.

Not quite. Taken altogether Millers graphic novel probably has a similar amount of historical basis as the narrative of Gladiator - ie some but very little. There was a Battle of Thermopylae fought in 480 BC between the Persian Empire under Xerxes I and an alliance of Greek city-states led by Sparta under Leonidas. Granted some of the look and feel of Rome, it’s army, city, politics, gladiators etc is a fairly reasonable portrayal, and while Marcus Aurelius was indeed an emperor, apparently stoic in rule in comparison to his son and successor a corrupt Commodus, not his death nor any other events from the movie have any basis in history.

Quintus was just being loyal to Rome, just like Maximus, but he didn't know that the emperor had been killed by Commodus. So he was just being loyal to the throne.

This thing that modern audiences often overlook about battles from a much older time, is that they tended to begin, and end on the same day, because there's no artificial light for ANY of the fighters. It's VERY hands on. There's no pulling of a trigger, then a tiny figure in the distance drops. It's up close and very personal. It's chaos, with everyone around you trying to stay alive. It's a big group of men, gathering to brawl until one of the sides flees the field. Most of the warriors are regular people, farmers, merchants etc pressed into service. Some cultures had professional warriors, whose JOB it is, to fight. It's a vast difference between that, and modern wars, where it's mass remote killing technology, and sides dug in for YEARS.

There is no comparison. Gladiator is 10 times the movie 300 was. 300 was entertaining and eye candy.. But Gladiator is a top all time film. It won best picture at the Oscars. And it definitely deserved it. 300 wasn't even nominated.
Also.. The actress. Who plays Cersei.. Is Leonidas' wife in 300.

300 is great but The Last Samurai is pretty special. It's beautiful and i love it. And Gladiator is in another category, definitely a classic and a definite favorite. Gladiator is it's own thing, it's epic and it's an amazing movie. The story, the acting, the cinematography and Hans Zimmer score ❤️
If you really love those warrior movies, you should definitely watch Troy, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven and King Arthur (2004) 🎬

One of the things a lot of people seem to get wrong about TLS is that they think Tom Cruise's character Nathan Algren is "The Last Samurai". No. The Last Samurai is Katsumoto. You could argue in fact that Katsumoto is indeed the "main character", but his story is told through the lense of Algren. In any case, I actually prefer TLS to Gladiator. Gladiator is just too silly. Hollywood loves a big Historical epic, if it's based on Western culture. So, Gladiator ran away with a lot of awards, but TLS top to bottom better acting, better action, a more plausible story, it's still fictional history, and takes liberties, not least of them is a white dude taking a major role in a Samurai rebellion. However, Algren is more of a narrative aid. You could chop him out of the film, and tell the same basic story and the movie still works.

@@mercbeast6590 I think people and specially Hollywood love Gladiator because it's a big spectacle from start to finish. I was definitely "entertained" by it 😁
The Last Samurai is more "quiet". It's subtle. It sneaks on you. But you can't deny that there's a certain beauty about this movie. I love the acting, especially from the japanese actors. Let's not kid ourselves, they are the stars of this movie (Watanabe, Sanada, Katō and the others). Tom Cruise is here to shine the light on them (in my opinion) but it's definitely my favourite piece of acting from him. The landscape, well, there's nothing to say about it, just watch the movie 🤩
And I absolutely love the score of those 2 movies. Both from Hans Zimmer ❤️ But you just have to listen to know what those movies are about. They translate perfectly the sense of spectacle from Gladiator and the sense of quiet beauty from TLS.
They want to transmit something different. That's why I say Gladiator is in another category. And it's considered a classic. They're both "warrior" movies but I get something different from each. I love them both but I saw Gladiator first. I remember the experience of seeing it for the first time, of hearing the music, being amazed by the scale of it all. For a kid, that's magical 😊 But I completely understand why you would prefer TLS. My opinion is not very objective as you can see 😉

In terms of battle tactics, the Spartan and Greek phalanx were already stone-age by the time of the Roman Legions at their peak. At the battle of Cynocephalae Greek phalanx were using the same tactics as that of Alexander the Great, which had already made the tactics of the 300 obsolete, were themselves sitting ducks and were massacred by the Romans. Always awkward to show Romans as the lead. It was standard for Roman armies to slaughter entire people, men women and children. Since you loved 300 you should look for the 1962 film 300 Spartans. Don’t let the age of the film dissuade you. That film inspired Frank Miller to write 300. Many of the iconic scenes and iconic dialogue came from the 1962 film. Before CGI a cast of thousands to portray massive armies. Many ‘accidents’ are seen, like a spear slamming into an actor’s face. A real sharp sword slicing a shield apart, the pieces spiralling in the air. Men are bloodied, helmets and shield dented and smeared with blood. Flawed, but more grounded and realistic than 300. Pretty good for a 1962 film. In 1965 I stepped into the ruins of the Colosseum in Rome. As a child I thought it was the scariest place I have ever been in. I cry at the end of Gladiator everytime. Joaquin Phoenix is just an absolute legend.

I saw 300 when I was 14 in the theaters. That was during a time when Xbox 360 was popular when kids loved mindless "showy" action. The sentiment from kids back then was "who cares abt the story?" As a person who loves storytelling, even back then, Gladiator > 300. iirc 300 set the trend for movies like 10,000 BC lol
