And the burn could be seen from miles and miles since all those explosions of flaming oil were practical. It truly was an epic movie. And if you adjust for inflation, the movie's budget was close to $186 million. That's less than 2023's The Flash.
Another fun fact: The barbarians (real life Milwall fans) were scheduled to be killed anyway so Ridley Scott "recruited" them for the opening battle where they were butchered without mercy.

That's because Lena Headey doesn't play the sister. That's Connie Nielsen, who wasn't in GoT at all, but she did play Queen Hippolyta in Wonder Woman.
For such an action-heavy movie, it's all about the ending for me. It's by far my favorite part of the movie.

The fact that he didnt escape makes it a Bittersweet tragedy
Joaquin did SUCH A GOOD JOB HERE. Like you said, serious joffrey vibes, but also, he was so pitiful you felt bad for him, even as you hated him, and were disturbed by him. All he wanted was to be loved. By his father first and foremost. By his sister when that failed, by rome itself. But he was just so twisted and broken inside that he couldnt even get why he couldnt have that. And the lack of love made him insane. He was a sociopath, in that he couldnt properly comprehend normal human feelings, one who just couldnt be what he needed to be to get what he was after.
That's exactly because Gleeson was inspired from this movie.
Watch the cut scenes. There's one that would've secured Joaquin's Best Supporting Actor Oscar win. He's so good in that scene. Which makes you sad, but also, it was right for the film to cut the scene!
So, like Ramses from The Prince of Egypt?

To me the biggest thing about this movie is Caesar telling Maximus that he knows his son is NOT a moral man, and isn’t fit to rule….. and then tells NOBODY ELSE about his plans for the handing off of imperial powers before he tells his son. A father’s love can override good sense sometimes.

Antonio Banderas, Hugh Jackman, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, and Tom Sizemore were considered for the role of Maximus until Russell Crowe was cast, after he had dropped out playing Wolverine in the X MEN movie, which went to Hugh Jackman.
The opening Battle scene was filmed in Surrey England, The gladiator training school was filmed in Morrocco, while the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta for 19 weeks.
Oliver Reed, Proximo, passed away on May 2, 1999, of a heart attack. The film was dedicated to his memory.
Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died of them as well.
The scene where he is fighting Tigris Of Gaul almost ended his life as the tiger was going to kill him!
So when he asked Maximus about his victories he asked him specifically about Germania because he's from there. His response of many victories was not bragging. He was trying not to hurt his new found friend's feelings, and probably even more so not incur his wrath, being that the rebellion they quelled in the beginning of the movie was in Germania.
The music is also credited to Lisa Gerrard, the voice. She's the founder of the band "Dead Can Dance", she's so important in music history you can't imagine.
I’ve only seen this movie once and that scene of him finding his wife and child will stay with me forever.
I’m not a father or husband, but I can imagine the only thing worse than my wife being murdered is both of them being killed. And being crucified is a horrible, slow, painful way to go. It takes a truly fucked up person to order the crucifixion of a little kid.
Interesting fact, Oliver Reed who played Proximo, died before the filming finished. The final scene in the prison where he's releasing them is actually made using footage filmed of him from previous scenes. It's so well done, that I had no idea, even after watching it 4 times, until someone told me.
It wasn`t just previous shoots. They also used a body double and CGI which was unheard of at this time. I watched the film when it was released and I never noticed anything being off in this last act.

@@solokomhis final scene is actually just a darkened previous scene. In fact if you turn the brightness up you can see the "soldiers" behind him are actually his gladiators.

Underrated performance by Djimon Hounsou. I lost a friend when I was young and his words at the end of this film always get me. "I will see you again. But not yet. Not yet."
Just a quick FYI: Only a few gladiator fights were to the death. Gladiators were hard to train and keep profitable, having one die every fight was a waste of talent. They almost exclusively fought fights only to look good. The only Gladiator fights that usually went to the death were when games were put on for a rich man's funeral.
Deaths were a bit more common than that, but it's true that they tried to avoid them. During a gladiator's 1st year there was roughly a 10% chance of death, statistically speaking. That number went down the longer their careers ran, not only due to experience, but the fact that their increased popularity meant that they would be scheduled against easier opponents (in wrestling terms this would be a "squash" match).

To be fair, what you listed are events that were intentionally changed for thd sake of the Story.
What OP is talking about, is a common misconception, created by various media over the years.
Well... Roman gladiator bouts were rarely to the death. Etruscan ones were more likely to be lethal, something that Rome mostly ditched when they borrowed the tradition.
Oh, and going with the theme of pop-culture misconceptions: the "thumbs-up" was the signal to execute the loser, not to spare them (there's some debate as to whether the sign to spare them was a thumbs down, or placing the thumb inside the fist). Thumbs-up represented a drawn sword, the opposite a sheathed sword.
At some point, the meanings got reversed in people's minds. For this movie, Ridley Scott knew about the symbolism, and made the conscious decision to go with the inaccurate one, so as not to confuse the audience.
Plus, Gladiators weren‘t ripped as shown. Yes they were trained but they tried to have a nice thick layer of fat under their skin because the risk of getting a deep cut wasn‘t as high then.

One of my favourite bits was Maximus' hand out to feel the grains of his home slipping by his fingers. That wasn't planned -- it was second unit photography, and it was just something Russell Crowe's stand-in was doing as he was walking, but they loved it and filmed it and it became such a big part of the movie.
Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe met and Scott told him they would make a great film together. That movie was Gladiator. We are at a point where green screen is used so often that when we see big movies it means very little to us because we know it's not real. This movie is phenomenal. The cast of some of Britain's greatest actors and two young powerhouse performances from Crowe and Pheonix who's careers have been long and noteworthy. Just the best. ❤

I have lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen this film…. the ending still brings tears to my eyes.
It's always nice hearing you guys notice things i never did about movies i've seen a thousand times.
The part about it feeling like he "earned his name back" is such a cool observation.
I feel like its less he earned it back, and more the man he was returned once he had his goal. As the spaniard he didnt care much. He was just surviving. But once he had the goal, the chance to kill commodus and actually get revenge, maximus woke back up.
This movie came out while I was studying for a Roman history degree and it was amazing to see everything I was reading rendered on a cinema screen with such verve and appreciation for the world. Two decades later it still gives me shivers. I'm glad you loved it as much as I do.
And nothing of it was accurate. 😊
During the battle of Carthage when Maximus catches the sword on horseback and charges into the mix gets me fired up every time! The epic music is the cherry on top!

Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Commodus is amazing. It's in my top 5 movie villains of all time.
27:03 The actor who plays Tigris of Gaul, Sven-Ole Thorsen, in this scene was also in the original Conan movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was one of the two main henchmen for Tulsa Doom (James Earl Jones). He also was in Mallrats (LaFours) and The Hunt for Red October (Russian C.O.B.)
Good friend of Arnold, they even founded a bodybuilding group in Santa Monica together, and overall appeared in 15 of Arnold's movies.
Also beat the OG Hulk, Lou Ferrigno, for the role of Tigris.
Joaquin wasn’t confident he could do this role until Russell spoke to him and convinced him he could.
Glad he did, as Joaquin put in one of the greatest villain performances of all time!
I remember my Grade 8 history teacher forcing us to watch/rewatch the opening of Gladiator because his assignment was for us to write a significant report on Roman battle tactics and what not just from this scene and a bit of our reading material. I was the only one to write the longest and receive an A++ on my report for how much breadth and depth I went with my report.
The Romans had Crazy War Machines!
That end triad song of "Elysium, Honor Him and Now We Are Free" is a wholesome majestic composition. Hans Zimmer amd collaborators knock it out of the park. Always make my eyes teary.

I still get chills to this day when Proximo talks and describes his days as a gladiator. This movie has so many great quotes and moments. Gladiator, Braveheart, and the Last Samurai...aside from the film Midway, they don't make them like the used to.
Yessss you could see in Proximo's eyes how we was reliving the moment while describing it. Amazing!
This movie is my absolutely favorite, hands down none can match it.
It has had an incredible influence in my life ever since I saw it first when I think I was 10 or 11. My senior quote in high school was "what we do in life, echoes an eternity," and I went on to get my college degree in history focusing on Greco-Roman military history. For my graduation trip after High School, my parents took me to Rome to see the Coliseum and I ran out of the metro station through a busy crowd while listening to that closing song. When I saw it... I promise you I cried. It inspired me to take up HEMA and study sword fighting and I would never trade any of it in for one second.
One of the Best soundtrack ever, with this movie felt again the scense of great ost did infelt in 70-80 s movies

I love how, as Maximus dies, his image of the afterlife is the road leading downhill toward his farm, with his wife and son wait8g for him to come home.

This was the first movie I ever saw multiple times in a theater (4x). One of the best ever. Your reaction was absolutely perfect and gave me the feels all over again.

One of the timeless pieces of entertainment which will be remembered for dozens of years to come. Almost flawless. It is funny that even in the movie like this you can find a couple of screw-ups like the camera and the crewman on the left in the shot at 18:30. Always makes me smile to see him there.

I remember watching this on a Saturday afternoon in the summer with a bunch of friends and a 30-pack of beer. We agreed that we'd take a sip after every death. We didn't realize we'd be wasted in about 15 minutes.
I love your description of this as like a Folk Tale.
People get fixated with "historical accuracy" when it comes to this sort of film, when authenticity is much more important in my opinion.
But the idea that this is the sort of story that has been handed down from one generation to the next, each time being embellished a little more, is a perfect fit for this movie.
It's been sooo long since I have seen this I forgot that Richard Harris (King Arthur, Dumbledore) was in it, albeit briefly. This really is a great movie/cast.

I swear, Gladiator is one of those movies that everyone seems to love but doesn't get brought as much as it deserves.
The ending always makes my eyes tear up. It's such a good story of a hero who fought for good of his people. He saw so much death and destruction as a general, he knew a tyrannical empire was not a peaceful way to rule over a land he gave so much of his life to protect. fulfilling his mentor/ father figure's wishes by his dying breath to free the people
One of my favorite movies and always will be. I have known and watched this movie since I was an early teenager. Well done in commentating this and giving it the praise it deserves and always will. I watched every minute of this video and was happy with all of it... From a true fan of this movie, from it's beginning, thank you. Well done.

I got to watch this masterpiece in the cinema at the premiere back in the day, sadly i was a young boy at the time so i couldn't really appreciate the wonderful dialogue or cinematography.
As i've rewatched it a couple of times as an adult, it has never failed to captivate me.
I can honestly say that I am in fact ENTERTAINED.

I was living in Los Angeles when this came out. Some of my friends and I went to see it on opening weekend at the legendary Cineramadome in Hollywood. While we stood in line I saw that Kevin Pollack was a few people behind us with some of his friends. The movie was great and we all poured out into the parking lot. Everyone broke out into pantomime gladiator battles in the parking lot. I am happy to say that my friends conquered Kevin Pollack and his friends.

The most iconic and meaningful scene ever just might be the one of his hand skimming thru the wheat.
Oh man, I'm a 23 year old dude and the "He was a soldier of Rome" scene together with the music makes me shed a tear every god damn time... Such a fantastic movie, pretty much was the start of my Romaboo being back when I watched it for the first time as a kid

Thank you for your reaction, once again it was great to watch you guys. :-) Also over 1000 years passed and humans did not changed much. We still watch bloody sports and still try to buy wreid stuff. Now some people wants to buy bath water and during time of Rome there was mentions in documents that people were buying sweat of their favorite gladiator :D
I watched this for the first time ever about two months ago and damn if I wasn't missing out before that. Such a perfectly solid movie.

The reason Joaquin gave you Joffrey vibes is because Jack Gleeson, the actor who played Joffrey Baratheon, reported that he was directly influenced by Joaquin's performance as Commodus. There's definite parallels!
Great reaction as always guys! I wish you had shown more of Lucinda's dialogue. She had to walk a very fine line at all times with her brother and seemed to be the only one who could calm him down at times (in the beginning). Like her father said she would have made an excellent emperor if she hadn't been born a woman. I guess the movie is a bit long though to show everything.

This is the one of the few movies that have ever made me cry. And its the only one to make me cry on every subsequent rewatch.
The most surprising thing about you guys is the amount of movies that you haven't seen. See you guys watch a movie. I'm just going really. These guys are watching for the first time. I thought by now they would have at least seen it because it is such a classic or popular movie. The charaters they played were real people.
Recently learned at a gladiator exhibition in the museum : The professional life of a popular gladiator fighter was a regular 20 years. About 90% of the fighters reached their retirement (!!) Until then they were the property of the gladiator school which paid for their living expenses. When they reached retirement age, in addition to their freedom, they received a wooden sword and a certain share of the income that the gladiator school earned from renting out his acting skills and selling merchandise (!). No joke
Hell Yes Bros, it's been 24 years ago that seen this movie in the theater, but i have cried too. A lot of people cried at the scene where you see the feet of his wife and Son. And also you could hear the shock in the theater when the horse run over his son. pffffff, is a great movie. Still watch every few years. And the music in this movie, wowwwwww.

I saw this movie in theaters because it was the only chance I would ever have to see one of my favorite actors on the big screen, Oliver Reed (Proximo)
He was a popular star back in the 60’s & 70’s
Unfortunately, his off screen “Hell Raiser” lifestyle eventually overshadowed his acting talent.
In fact, he died in a pub in Malta during a break from filming Gladiator. He was 61 and had been drinking with his wife, friends, and a group of sailors. He took part in a drinking competition and arm wrestling with the sailors. After several hours of drinking and fun, he suffered a heart attack and died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was quite the legend and went out just as he had predicted during an interview in 1994, “I died in a bar of a heart attack full of laughter.”

Love watching puppies reacting to old dog movies. . . Funny part it's all history I can tell you about Markus aurillious his meditations his stochrastic philosophy the fall of Rome the reasons why the 30 books I've read and 3 movies and some are so cheezy. Gladiator not historicaly accurate. But since Dumbledore was in it and I had dinner and drinks with that guy when he came to the Seattle opera house to do Camelot. That was a good day. I have seen this movie more times then I can count, never got bored for a second even if I know every scene by heart.

in case you guys didn't pick it up, he didn't fight at first because they chain two people together. "Red" marks with "yellow" marks. Red marks being the better fighters. He knew if he didn't fight he would get a yellow mark, and be chained to a red mark, therefore increasing his odds of survival. He is not ready to go at this point, he is bent on revenge.
He didn't fight at first because he wasn't in a real fight, the initiation where they're using wooden swords ain't real, so he didn't have to. But in the arena he ALWAYS fights because he HAS TO IF HE WANTS TO SURVIVE, it has zero to do with a mark.
