Yes I know the movie volume is low and I'm talking more on this reaction but it's bc YT blocked it 5 times before I could even get it up. So sorry Major Fam
It's good, brother. It's not too low that you can't hear them. I hate that. You did a good job. Do what you have to do.
MAXIMUS DESIMUS MARIDEAS = LATIN WAS THE ROMAN LANGUAGE WITHIN ROME.
U good bruh
Your knowlege of history is really good . . . . it's hard to get the details right.
I think Ridley Scott annonced a Gladiator 2, and he is also making a Napolenon movie with Jaquine Phoenix playing Napoleon.. imagine that.
Ridley Scott put his damn FOOT in this movie...And that Oscar was well deserved for Russell Crowe 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hi, Major. Small point, Boudica wasn't part of the Germanic tribes. "Boudica or Boudicca, was a queen of the ancient British Iceni tribe, who led a failed uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 60 or 61. She is considered a British national heroine and a symbol of the struggle for justice and independence."
Yeah, she apparently burnt down St Albans twice, as it was a Roman settlement. I’m from Hertfordshire so I like to think that I’m walking about somewhere she walked. It’s a shame that they changed tactics in their last battle, they should have kept to gorilla warfare, open combat with Romans wasn’t a good idea back then.
@@Inconsistent-Dogwash Gorilla warfare XD
Yep, she was a Celt.
@@Inconsistent-Dogwash she burnt St Albans once, along with Colchester and London! St Albans was the last city to be destroyed before marching north to fight her last battle!
“What we do in life, echoes in eternity.” In my top 3 epic movie quotes all time.
Are you not entertained?!
Yup definitely up there. My favorite movie quote is "ok you alien a-holes, in the words of my generation, UP YOURS!" -Independence day
Richard Harris, a wonderful Marcus Aurelius and the best Dumbledore ❤️
You should watch the Count of Monte Cristo!
I love the fact that Maximus' image of the afterlife is the road leading downhill toward his farm, with his wife and son waiting at home for him.
"Proximo" (Oliver Reed), the old man who owned the gladiators, got his breakout role in the 1961 horror film "Curse Of The Werewolf" as the werewolf! Another screen icon and this was one of his last films.
Yep, and he died during the production of Gladiator, as far as i remember he drank 6 bottles of whiskey and got a heart attack. So Ridley Scott had to finish the film with cgi Proximo(((
@@lukasmarsha6843 Oh, yeah. Reed was known to have a horrible drinking problem. As was Harris, who used to boast of his and Peter O'Toole's buddy drinking exploits.
5:17 The Germanians didn’t get the memo on not killing the messenger. 🤣😂
You're right, it would say "based on a true story." Those soldiers Commodus was fighting in the beginning obviously couldn't fight back lol no need to clap for him
And yes, watch Spartacus. Starts a bit slow then just POPS OFF! Hugely entertaining
I'd suggest the Original Film "Spartacus" .... a Huge Epic!
Yup they 100% had a newsreader standing in the middle of the square doing essentially what news anchors do today lol. You should check out the HBO show ROME it’s unreal
You gotta check out Ridley Scott's other amazing war movie Kingdom of Heaven. Make sure it's the director's cut, it adds so much to the story. It's about the Second Crusade. I think you'd really enjoy it.
Great call. A criminally underrated movie.
Me n hubby went to Italy 6 years ago. When we walked into the Coliseum…..I had chills, by the time we walked up to the top and out into the sun to see the entire structure- tears just ran down my face, I wasn’t sad or happy, I was stuck….real stuff happened in here- - and I’m standing here today? God bless them all.❤️🔥❤️
I will give you mega points for reading Marcus' Meditations. A truly extraordinary work. I read it for the first time decades ago and it convinced me that Marcus was one of the very few men in history you could safely trust with absolute power.
I will point out that in real life Commodus was even stranger than in this film.
Fun fact they originally going to have a scene were Maximus would be advertising Olive Oil etc., but they cut it because they thought audiences would think it both incredibly anachonistic and hoky. Surprisingly in reality in Rome famous Gladiators did in fact advertise products for money and they also had action figures of themselves sold.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Cannot believe you've never seen this movie. This movie is probably the greatest movie ever made. Straight masterpiece. 👌
If you like historical fiction you need to watch Master and Commander also with Russel Crowe and is viewed as one of the most accurate depictions of life and war at sea in the early 19th century not to mention a compelling story and stellar cast, many of whom you will recognize,
Also if you liked Vikings you need to watch The Last Kingdom a TV series based on The Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Shaw. It takes place during the time of King Alfred and the height of the viking age. Our main protagonist Uhtred is fictional but many of the battles and political machinations are historical fact with the circumstances being somewhat fictionalized. An excellent show that they didn't fuck up the ending like GOT and we still have a movie coming as icing on the cake.
As a inspiration for Jack Gleason's character, Joffrey Baratheon from Game of Thrones, he studied Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus character for his role.
36:00 One of my favorite points in the movie. Even sold into slavery Maximus is still a born leader of men.
He lead his fellow gladiator to victory. I love that when it looked like Commodus was going to kill him, the other gladiator stepped up and had his back. Brotherhood!
For historical movies with great battle scenes, check out “Braveheart” (not that historically accurate), “Master and Commander:…” and “Last Samurai”.
Great reaction. I didnt expect you to know that much about ancient Rome. Good stuff. If you are interested in the struggle of Rome against the Germanic Tribes you should read about the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest where Arminius and the Germanic tribes wiped out 3 Roman Legions. Great story and really interesting Characters involved :)
Yes Spartans Boold and Sand on Starz was one of my favorite shows, it was a very under rated show. It was a really good it showed. It showed how the Gladiators train, lived and died under the whip of their masters for roar of the crowd.
Great movie and the best opening in cinematic history, I still remember when I watched that first scene for the first time (20+ years ago). They don't make movies like this anymore, not even Ridley Scott.
I always hit that like button before I even watch your reactions because I know they’re going to be good.
right? I can't hit the button more than once and that makes me sad.
The actor who played "Marcus Aurelius" (Richard Harris) was one of my all-time FAVORITE actors! Although he mostly played roles of Englishmen, he was actually a proud Irishman. THIS was his last role, before his death. An acting LEGEND‼️
He also played the original "Dumbledore" in the first two Harry Potter movies.
Boudica was a Celtic queen in England before the Saxon invasion so she was a Briton if I am not mistaken, not Germanic.
For me the Soundtrack is phenomenal, incredibly emotional
It was really fun to watch someone who really knows history react to this and you made a GREAT point about literacy back then and people believing what they were told!
My favorite movie of all time. I remember when I screened this movie when it first came out. I was a manager/projectionist in the theater. Glad you enjoyed it bro.
King Arthur (2004) with Clive Owen and Keira Knightly, directed by Antoine Fuqua, takes place when the Romans were pulling out of Britannia. Arthur and his knights go on one last mission above Hadrian's Wall into Woad, or Pict, territory. I love this movie. It's a great story with great acting and lots of action. ✌🏽
Great movie reaction! You didn't just watch it, you felt it.
The movie Titus (1999) with Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange is adapted from Shakespeare's *Titus Andronicus*. It's a revenge tragedy based in Roman times. Titus the general returns to Rome victorious and decides to sacrifice the son of his enemy, the Goths, to appease the Roman dead. The Queen of the Goths pleads for her son's life to no avail so she sets out on a mission of retaliation. It's a savage and sometimes shocking movie. I love it. I've found that when the Elizabethan/Shakespearean English is used having the subtitles on is really helpful.
Thank you! It's a pleasure to watch a reaction to this movie by a person who has any concept of Roman history.
"From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper.
From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character.
From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich.
From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally. "
Marcus Aurelius
INFO: "Gladiator 2" by Ridley Scott coming in 2024.
It's an honor to get to know you through your reactions. I feel they say a lot about the man you are. #Respect
If you like historical dramas like this. Then Braveheart is a must. You will love it. Like this movie alot of artistic license is prevalent. Not many movies tell 100% accurate details. But the story is true and has alot of accuracy. And alot of Hollywood. But nonetheless a great movie. You will love it.
Allow me to preface what I’m about to say with the fact that I freakin LOVE this movie.
But this movie gives people a completely distorted view of a gladiator’s life. In reality, gladiators almost never died.
Who were gladiators? They were slaves. Owned by slave owners. Does anyone actually think that these slave owners would throw their property to death all willy-nilly? Why? So they constantly had to spend more money to buy slaves? Slaves were not easy to acquire, not to mention that not every slave was worthy of the expense of being housed, fed and trained as a gladiator. Occasionally accidents occurred and a fighter was maimed or killed in the arena, but that was not the norm.
Now here’s the mind blowing part. Most of them knew each other and most often even trained together. They had almost no interest in hurting one another. They were in one town this weekend and in another town next weekend. They were the ancient equivalent of…. WWE wrestlers. They were entertainers. It was a show and dance. Smoke and misdirection.
Those who were made to fight to the death in Public Arenas were mostly Criminals, Political Traitors and such!
Marcus Aurelias was brilliant. Impressed you are reading his work
"...and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next" that shit fires me up EVERYTIME!
The story of Hannibal was a fascinating one. He took elephants across the Alps rather than horses because they were m9re accustomed to the harsh, wintry conditions in the mountains. Also they defeated the Romans at the Battle of Cannae in what is believed to be Rome's worst ever defeat. Legend has it that there were more Roman soldiers killed and captured in that one day of battle at Cannae than all the Americans killed and captured in the entire Vietnam War!
This film is based on an older film from the 60s Fall of the Roman Empire. During the "Are You Not Entertained" speech check out the crowd far left...there is a guy in a t-shirt and jeans.
Just to add. Just to add. When you look 100s of years into history, you can only speculate on certain things based off the written documents left behind
Major your knowledge on history is definitely impressive, and hell ya Ryse: son of Rome was a classic game
Really loving your channel man. I love history too. And always end up googling historical figures after watching a show or movie based off of them
Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix ..masters of their art..
I haven't even seen the reaction yet. I just paused and went to Audible to grab "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius.
"At my signal, unleash hell."
40:11 I think Maximus and the sister Lucille did have a relationship. But her father married her off to someone of higher status. Or maybe she decided on her own to marry a higher status dude.
This is my #1 movie! If you like this genre, you should react to Centurion if you haven't already. Michael Fassbender is in it, and the lady Pict warrior is a badass! I'm thrilled to find a reaction channel that loves these historical epics!
Cant believe you didn't watch all these classic movies till today
Prive ryan , fury gladiator...
Really great reactions tho
I think it has the best soundtrack ever
The only movie who made me cry
One of my top 5 five movie of all time, can’t wait for the sequel to come out in 2024!
Dear Major, Boudicca wasn't a Germanic but a Celtic queen, who fought the Romans in Britannia in about 60 AD.
A question I like to ask people. You are hosting a dinner party, you have a setting for eight people including yourself, who else in history would you invite? (Political figures, Entertainers, Athletes, Inventors, Innovators, anyone in history), and in what place at the table will they be seated? I usually would place myself at one of the heads of the table. Anyone care to play and share, it would be interesting. You can share this with your friends too.
Spartacus, Rome and The Last Kingdom all shows I think you'd enjoy. Plenty of content to enjoy in this genre
This is one of the best movies ever made. Period
It should be pointed out that the Colosseum was called the Amphitheatre in ancient times. The name Colosseum wasn't coined until the 17th Century.
Oh, man, it's great you love history. The last of the mohicans 1992, I'm sure you gonna like this movie!!!
Kelly's Hero's !!!!
One of the all time WW2 movies.
not your typical movie, but its awesome!!!
I see you trying to hold them tears back Major 😂😅👀
YOOOOO!! You gotta watch the movie The 13th Warrior and The Last Of The mohicans. Absolutely amazing movies. Exactly what you like
Sorry if this is already commented on, Boudicca was in Britain, not Germania. She committed suicide ( it’s rumoured) rather than be captured after her force was defeated. I think a large number of Germanic tribes were not defeated. We are describing a Europe whose borders were very different to modern times or even recent historical references. The history is endlessly fascinating.
Dude, wasn’t sure about following some people just doesn’t deserve it. But to be honest you keep it real and watching one by one the shit i like so respect! Keep going keep doing the shit you do you will have a different perceptive on life when seeing all the shit we do. Respect g.
Only the names of some of the characters in this movie are real. There is a huge amount of creative liberty taken to make a movie about Gladiators. But it is such a good movie. What impresses me about this reaction is your knowledge of history. Dude, you are wicked smart. Or at least you paid attention in your history classes. Love this reaction. Keep it up. Subbed!
I love that actor that set him free...He played in the three musketeers as Athos...very serious character...Rachel Welch omw played in it too...many others...can anyone else name them?...alot of them even one that played in the lord of the rings.
Maximus was known historically as Marius. Commodus actually poisoned his father Marcus Aurelius to gain power. The Romans lost to theGermanic tribes in like 105 AD but later in 108 or 109 the Romans came back to defeat them. Commodus did want to get it in with his sister, but she was married to the co-emperors son.
This is now my Favorite Reaction of yours to date ❤❤❤ Your love of history and appreciation of this phenomenal filmed really shined through, thank you for the time and effort you put into this❤
I think Commodus was the last Caesar.
If I remember correctly ,he was killed in a public bathhouse.
Publius Helvius Pertinax was the next Caesar.
History or based on history:
Dr. Zhivago
Life is beautiful
The Far Pavilions ( I love this movie but not sure if it’s your style, it does have battles).
Romeo and Juliet 1968 Franco Zeffirelli
Gone with the wind (ok ok I know, but worth watching)
Movie isn’t historically accurate like that. This particular story didn’t happen but some of the characters obviously existed.
i also reacommend you react to :
★ - *Blade I* _(1998)_
★ - *Blade II* _(2002)_
★ - *Blade III : Trinity* _(2004)_
_Underrated _*_Marvel_*_ Classic_
If you like historical drama series, check out “Rome” (mostly historically accurate) and “John Adams” (probably historically accurate).
Interesting you mention Henry V, he literally carried the scars of battle, he definitely wasn’t one not to get involved
This movie is GOAT
Last movie I watched with my mom brie she died. It was our favorite.
Have you seen What Dreams May Come?
In reality, Commodus didn’t kill Marcus Aurelius. There was no reason to, since Marcus was grooming him to take over. They were co-emperors for the last few years of Marcus' life, then Commodus became Emperor by himself. The rebellion led my sister really happened, but it was crushed fairly quickly, and Commodus had her and the other ringleaders executed.
One of my top movies next to
Troy & 300
I’m still voting for
‼️🚨 Tom Clancy's- Jack Ryan 🚨‼️
Reaction, it’s on Prime and it’s 3 seasons…
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give it a go 🙏🏽
When he said "our history". It hit different. Because this is *world history*. And we are *the world*. Black to white, we've been warriors all the way to empires. Glory knows glory.
As far as I can tell by what I’ve discovered, a large part of my ancestry is Norman, Frankish and Gaul till 1066 and then For sure Saxon ancestry added.
Great reaction to a great movie.
If you haven't already, you should check out the movie Hacksaw Ridge. It's based on the true story of a conscientious objector who served as a medic in Word War 2.
Classic tale, been told many times before, irl, but this encapsulates it so well
You should check out the mini series, HBO: Rome if you like historical TV. It would be great for your reaction channel and no one else does it. Its a great series up and down.
One of my favorite movies 💜 such a good film. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
Indeed, now they make films like *Battleship* 😅
@@dIggl3r lol. I miss these kinds of films. I watched a UA-cam video about why they don’t make these kinds of cinematic movies anymore.

@@lyssalovesit Wow very good description!
Check out Spartacus with Kirk Douglas if you like the gladiator stuff. Its a classic.
The STARS Spartacus show was also incredible. We wont see its like again..
Spartacus the movie and the series....not sure how much of the series you can even show but it was amazing.
I love this movie, but it's not historically accurate. Yes, of course there was a Marcus Aurelius who was the Roman emperor, with a son Commodus and a daughter Lucilla, but that's about where the accuracy ends. Commodus did become emperor when his father died, but he didn't kill his father. There was no gladiator Maximus. And Marcus Aurelius had a co-emperor ruling with him (Lucius Verus), who Lucilla was married to. On and on, but I still love this movie.
this is my all time favorite movie!
i adopted a bullmastiff mix in 2011 when he was 6 months old. when i was filling out the adoption papers, i had to list his new name. the only name i could think of was 'maximus decimus meridius' so that's what he got (fit him much better than 'duke' anyways 🫠). he lived up to his name (strength & honor) until he passed November, 2019.
thanks for another GREAT reaction. definitely looking forward to the green mile, stranger things and peaky blinders! 👌
13:00 Remember, This is a US film. Marcus Aurelius Meditations is great for all men to read. For all humans, but especially men
26:00 You are more right than what you give. American Football, we have Football, same urge
Deaths, did bring the no to us, no deaths, unless heart attacks
Understand American, most Europeans are from slave communities. EXIT
Move forward
45:30 Remember, when we hear this psyops from any community, we answer the same
There is an answer Americans don't like, we are not you
I watched this in theaters, phenomenal movie.
Great reaction. Thank you 😊
Adoption was a common practice amongst Roman elite.
there are some artistic changes in the movie that are not historically accurate. So take the plot of the movie with a grain of salt.
Damn your knowledge is crazy !! I thought i knew history but you beat me for sure !
Mate you REALLY got to watch spartacus. Incredible series
Remember, we play all personas
You're so sharp, dude. You pick up on everything
Yo you gotta check out Blood Diamond, it's a fantastic movie!
Marcus Aurelius book Meditations is no indeed life changing for many young men. Pure wisdom.
