I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level. - Спорт
Matt. Your last video got my curiosity peaked about building rod. This video really helped me in the process even more. Thanks.
give it a try!
I live in Orlando and I go there at once every other week and pick up blanks or items that I need, cool place, nice people
awesome!
Same here . Lol
Its amazing to me how many rod builders there are based on the size of the operation they have. Thanks for getting me started. Love catching em rods I built
you bet!
Yep a very special place … back when i was doing my yearly California long range tuna trips I needed a set of rather special stand-up rods to pair with my Penn International 30T, 30TW, 50T, 50SW and 80 reels. I could of sourced everything from Yo’s Tackle In LA, the center of the universe WRT California stand-up tuna fishing but it was expensive to do that way. having a local place i could walk in to and talk to a live human who understand what I was doing was priceless
i wish i lived closer!
I want to start building rods. I looked into it before, but pushed it aside. This is where I stop procrastinating. 😂
give it a try!
I think the introduction was great, had me fooled!! Nice place to! Should have ask about employee discounts, stay a couple days & do some adds for them. "LOOK DEAR" carrying an armload of rods. I got a side job!!
haha!
Matt, believe it or not, I started building my own rods in the mid 90's by originally learning how from actually reading a book, lol! The book was "Advanced Custom Rod Building" by Dale Clemens. I have long since lost it over the years, or maybe I gave it away, I can't remember. But, I'm even more proud of those rods, that still survive, because I still use them very successfully to this very day, almost 30 years later. I even remember being happy to find a new rod building catalog back then, now prolifically recognized as the Mud Hole. Wow! It's still truly amazing to me to have experienced how small they were back then, much smaller than Jann's Netcraft at the time, only to see how much they have grown, becoming the predominant supplier of custom rod building components, today. If it were not for my memories and the little reminders of them that this episode has become, even I would have trouble believing how fortunate I've been to have so effortlessly spent my younger years so well.
Thanks for continuing to inspire this aging die hard through your own seemingly effortless examples.
using rods youve built to catch fish is extremely rewarding!
@@MattStefanFishing and while using lures you designed and made, and knocking em dead, while others sit and watch with their mouth wide open. "PRICELESS"
I really liked this one. Nice change of pace. Rod building is something I really want to get into.
Thanks!
Thanks Matt, loved the tour. Wish they'd open a location in Wausau.
mud hole north!
I have always wanted to try to build one, one of these days I will
you can do it!
You turned me on to building my own rods and I must say its the most fun hobby I have ever done, loved the video!!!
very rewarding!
The intro was hilarious (also cheesy, but I like cheesy 😂)! This was enjoyable, Matt. Thanks!
haha!
Next year when we go to Florida for our 3 months I’m definitely checking this place out !! And hopefully sign up for a few classes !!
you would love it!
Yes, Mudhole is "pron" for rod builders.
haha!
Lived in Orlando area for three years and part of the time within a mile of Mud Hole, but didn't know anything about them until I moved to WA. Damn!
dang!
Really cool and different video. I'd definitely be up for more like this from time to time.
awesome!
As a rod builder I really enjoyed this video. Built 14 bait casting rods and working on my 1st spinning rod. Would like to see how you wrap the 2 guides below the tip.
Nice!
Very cool to see this, if my workshop works out I'll be building some rods. Thanks Matt!
awesome!
Thanks for the video. It was great. You make rod building look easy and interesting. I would like to get into building my own rods, but I don't believe I have the patience. Heck, just tying on my baits is a pain. 😂 Thanks for sharing your trip.
you can do it!
You're an awesome fisherman !!
thanks so much!
Great video. Just finishing up an MHX MB843. I stopped at the Striker store in Hudson a few weeks ago to pick-up a couple of items. I mentioned that I heard about them from watching your channel. The girl smiled and noted that you are a member of their Pro Staff. Channel might be interested in a tour of their facility. BTW - for my generation the can’t wait for the catalog to arrive was the annual catalog from Herters. Spend many hours perusing those catalogs.
Awesome! thanks for your support!
Thanks for coming by Matt!!
it was a blast!
I would love to go there. I only have a few more rods to build and my whole arsenal will be hand made.
its an awesome place!
Wow, it's been a while since you did this video by the way I apologize for cutting in the video while you were waiting on an angel 👍
haha!
Swim jig, frog, spook, Glide bait, and one minus style crank bait.
awesome!
Mudhole is awesome! They are about an hour from me.
im jealous!
I make rods, been doing it for years. I use old sewing machine motors with the foot pedal. If you've ever used one you know you can make it go slow as #3!!. I take the pedal off and use a turning knob. I started in the 80's when that stuff was hard to get and very expensive. I'm a machinist so I got a great set up. Everything is self built, and I like my stuff better than what I see that you can buy. I build a lot of salt water poles for other people. I personally like bass fishing more than salt water. I do some snook fishing though. I use white swimbaits on one pole and throw out a mullet on another. Mullet are free if you can throw a cast net. I have a trick to catch shiners, $100 worth in an hour. Bass love them, big bass down here in S. Florida. I spend an hour getting shiners then it's time to fish all day without spending $100 on live bait. Sometimes I like to fish lazy.
thanks for sharing
Very cool video. I have a feeling I will be watching a lot of their videos and buying their gear when I get Stateside. Awesome stuff.
so much fun!
Very cool video
Cool of jake to give you a tour

Very cool, always wanted to build a rod.

Wow! This was a really cool video. So much info and something to add to my bucket list.
Thanks!
Great tour of the facility. Started building rods a few years ago thanks to some encouragement from one of your videos Matt. The online course was great and been at it ever since.

Cool place

I told my wife this is on my bucket list.
Nice!
Thank you so much for this one , so good
thanks!
Pretty cool tour Matt. I have often thought about building my own rods and have checked out Mud Hole before. Looks like it is not a big investment to get started on building them. Thanks for the tour.
give it try!
I need to learn how to build my own rods.
its easy!
Cool video.
thanks!
Nice intro Matt. Hard for me to believe that you didn't have a lighter flipping rod. Excellent video very informative. Don't live down there but if I did I would be building my own rods. Would like to learn that task. What is the average you spend on building your own rod. I have the want to but don't know the how to
thanks for watching!
Nice intro!
thanks!
Matt what would be a good starter kit, and good rod blank for BFS casting, looking for medium light up to 7’ 4”
Mud Hole has a bunch of starter kits to try and id call them for the best BFS. I havent built one yet
Appreciate ya taking us on a tour of the Mudhole Warehouse and Company. It was interesting to see all that they offer. Do you use heavier line albeit mono, fluro or braid then what the rods say is recommended?
i generally use light line
@@MattStefanFishing Ok. But what i was trying to figure out is if a medium rod is rated for up to 12lbs, how is it that 20lb braid is used? I don't want to break a rod or tip by using to heavy of a line especially since braid is smaller in diameter for its ratings.
We want Matt to build it , lol wish more Rod companies would make a 7 ft 1 or 7ft 2 with a shorter casting handle from the butt to the fore grip , like some 13 or 14 inch , I can’t stand the super long handle behind the reel seat , some or 17 -18 long to me they are way too long for casting artificial all day long
one of the reasons i love building my own rods
nice
thanks!
I really want to try MHX , I could get the components and bring it to a tackle store though too
give them a try!
@@MattStefanFishing thanks
Got my eye on the American Tackle G2 handles for my next build! Is there a MH blank you’d recommend for jig/bottom contact?
NMB-874
@@MattStefanFishing Thank you!
If you were building a BFS casting rod, what would your choice of blank be?
Id have to take a long look at the blanks being offerred. Contact mud hole for their expert advice!
On the Bass Pro Master Catalog…same Matt, same 😂
haha
Is there more then one location? I have been to a Mud Hole Ocoee Fl.. But it was not this big.
This is our new location in Oviedo! We built and moved in 2 years ago
this is the new location!
🍺Nice.👍
thanks!
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching!
Kid in a candy shop. Hope they bite.
thanks!
Why does the Navy guy have to be there in cammies? 🙄
thanks for watching
@@MattStefanFishing of course! 🤙🏽
@@MattStefanFishing you’re honestly the reason I just bought the stuff to build rods! Can’t wait to get my first few done!!
Great video. Enjoyed the opportunity to see the store versus just looking at their inventory online. Your rod building videos motivated me to sign up for a rod building class next month.
