    Your second rod build turned out much better than my second build. A couple of things you may want to try. Measure out exactly where you are going to place your grips, mark them, and rough up the finish on the blank to create a stronger bond. On a matte blank it's not as important as it would be with a slick finish like the one Scroggins built but trust me it's worth the extra effort and if you don't you will eventually have a grip come loose. Another thing to keep your grips from getting too loose when you ream them is always start the reamer from the bottom of the so the taper is the same direction as your blank, in other words the bottom of your grip is going to be a slightly larger diameter than the top. Another thing you might want to look at is "locking wraps" for your single foot guides. It would be hard for me to type how to do this but there are You Tube videos on this subject. Flex Coat has a pretty good one on the subject. Good luck, love your channel!

    As someone who has built probably 15 or so rods over the years you are doing well. The more you build the better you get and the easier it will become. I have built everything from ultralight pan fish rodsti bass fishing rods to heavy Pike and Salmon rods. There is nothing better than building your own rods for your type of fishing and catching fish on them. I look forward to watching your skills as a builder growing.

    much better!!! a quick tip.. cut the tips of your paintbrush and as you apply the epoxy to the thread wraps turn the brush so that you are pushing the epoxy to the edge of the wraps with a point rather than a flat brush. this will allow you to get a nice sharp edge to your epoxy..

    I started building rods before I did baits. Mud Hole came through town doing seminars. I loved it and couldn’t wait to get home and try it without the help of the instructors. Got home and found wrapping guides to to be the most infuriating thing ever! Maybe it was because it was a little ice fishing rod, but I was so frustrated that I left all my blanks unfinished. Watching this makes me want to pull out all the tools and give it another try. Good stuff as always!

    As a rod builder myself, I tried not to cringe too much watching your first build. I had to keep reminding myself that you had no lessons and we just looking for something that functioned well. But, as it is with all things, once we do it once, we immediately start looking for ways to make the next one better (it can’t be just me!). You appear to have done exactly that, as your second rod is far and away better (looking) than your first.
    One thing that will help you keep things “in line” is to get a view of your blank to where you can see the lights from above you forming a line along the blank, and use that line from the lights to set up anything that needs to run lengthwise, like your decal. (Ie. bring the top of the decal, or the top of the writing, in line with the light-line, and it’ll be level with the rest of the rod). Your first decal was askew, the second looked a Lot better. This method will also help if/when you do a lot of decorative wraps, keeping your crossing points lined up, etc.
    (Of course, I am just now realizing that these videos are from 3 years ago, and since I haven’t scrolled through your channel yet, you may not need these tips…but maybe someone else will get something from all of our comments)

    2 tips, on your thread wrapper, tighten the two interior jam nuts so that the spool shaft does not rotate. This allows you to tension each spool individually with the provided wing nuts.
    When I wrap accents, I find it easier to wrap the accent first and then wrap the guide thread on. Lock the tag ends of the accent thread under your guide wrap thread. This keeps the accent wraps in place until finish is applied.

    I build rods sometimes, but I often find myself reguiding rods. Even some very nice off the rack rods have not so great guides, or maybe dont have enough guides. My first foray into reguiding was on a shore beater ugly stik I use for cat fishing. It was a two piece rod, and the guides were so far off the spine, that the upper half would rotate under load. It's all a bit easier for me, since I own a motorized wrapper, but even with the experience I have, I still learn a surprising amout from your channel.👍👍👍

    Nice job! I like the blue/silver color combo. Rod building is so addicting. I keep finding new rod builds that I “need.” I’ve probably built 40 or so bass, panfish, and trolling rods. One thing I noticed, when you are tightening the wing nut on the thread carriage rod (metal rod that holds the spools), make sure the two nuts in the center are tight to the center post. They were moving a bit when you were wrapping which was why the tension kept loosening. I’ve done that a few times!

    • @WorldsWorstFishing
      @WorldsWorstFishing  4 роки тому

      okay Ill make sure and do that...keeping great tension has been a pain thus far

    • @krryoder
      @krryoder 4 роки тому

      That should definitely help. Mudhole also has a new 4 spool carriage upgrade that uses a different knob for tension and fits over the old one. It’s so much better!

    Did you grind the guide feet as well as the hook keeper? That will give you a neater thread run on the guides without being raised too high.
    If you are using size A thread on small guides, double wrap them so you have a good strong tie down. When you epoxy, it will have more thread to penetrate and make those points much stronger.
    Place those types of hook keepers in the opposite direction. Very darn good try and work for a second time.
    The more you make, you will achieve perfection in no time. Especially when taking pride in your personal rods and work.
    I dont have nice mud hole equipment buy I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning. I have just remade my first complete unique spiral wrapped jigging rod, medium heavy action 30- 80lb.
    I have a makeshift wrapping station with wood and I have no power wrapper or dryer so I am forced to use 5 minute epoxy so I turn with my hand till it sets up. Thin coats at a time.
    There is nothing better than making your own personal customized fishing rod and going out and using it and catching lots of fish knowing you have good strong reliable equipment in your hands.

    Love the difference from the first video to this again lock that threaded rod the spools are on tight and your tension will be adjusted by the wing nut and that will certainly help with how tight the threads are against one another and pull the tag end on the opposite side of the guide to secure it tight also filing down the tips of the guides will help the thread transition from blank to guide tight lines

    Looking good!!! If you use a thread that contains nylon, you can use cigarette lighter to give the thread a little burn treatment after wrapping. That way you do not need to rush putting on epoxy as the nylon in thread burns a bit with heat treatment and and "secures" the thread form getting loose. :)

  • @turntbyhi-lo3516
    @turntbyhi-lo3516 4 роки тому

    To make your highlight band easier, tape the highlight thread to the blank after you get the guide banded down. I like to wrap up to the ring, then start wrapping back.place two pull loops when your about halfway back to the starting point. Use one to pull your main thread under.( I like to pull under at least a quarter inch, by pinning the thread just under the first wrap. Then cut the tag end about an eighth inch long. That way when you pull your loop, you don't have that little fuzzy nub to deal with.) Then, do the trim band the same way. It's faster, neater, and much easier.

They’re certainly pretty and customizable, but seem pretty archaic given the incredible glues and epoxies available these days. I know you’re going over the thread with epoxy anyway but it really makes the intricate and time consuming work of the threading seem pointless. Thoughts?? Thx!

    However, just a good practice is to pull your tag ends through the opposite side of the guide foot. If you pull it through near the guide foot there is always a gap between rod blank and thread, and the tread could work its self loose. Thats a sexy rod. Id use the crap out of that. I have 1 of my favorites had a eye come loose can i use regular thread to tie my eye back in and by that i mean to spin it on the eye as u did with ur new rod? I dont have epoxy however is there a specific kind that i need to buy? Thanks for the video btw always down for learning something new whether its a new method of lure presentation or how to fix something i broke. Thanks man. Good day to u

      Just my two cents worth, Academy Sports and Outdoors sells a Fuji Emergency Rod Repair Kit ( sku# 118278884). It includes the brushes, thread wrapping epoxy, and thread for $10.99. That is about the cheapest route to go in fixing a line guide wrap, otherwise, I would go with bigger if there were more guides to be repaired. If that is the case, Jann's Netcraft sells Flex Coat All In One Rod Assembly Kit for $12.35. Please don't think that I am against Mudhole by any means. I have bought blanks from them in the past. They are very good by the way. I was trying to inform you of some cheaper ways for repairing your rod.

    • @dlgloege
      @dlgloege 4 роки тому

      Go to Mudhole.com they have videos on how to repair guides. Yes the epoxy is made for rod building, It does not yellow or become brittle. The thread is specific for rod building as well. It doesn't have oils or lubricants like sewing thread that would create problems in the finish epoxy.

    Rather than pack in epoxy into the end of the reel seat, I would think a sized O-ring epoxied at the screw-lock would ensure the blank was centered into the reel seat.

    • @jenky1044
      @jenky1044 4 роки тому

      I agree with you. Plus, not only will the o-ring center this, it will also handle water better than masking tape would.

      Esox Lucius the packs from mud hole have a spacing chart. You can also find spacing charts online. Or check out videos on UA-cam. Others have ways to determine and I’ve seen a couple on here. Hope this helps!!!

    • @robertcarrozzo5877
      @robertcarrozzo5877 4 роки тому

      Nick Fiebrich mud hole has two types of options for that. One is like this white tube and one is like red o-rings. I haven’t used them yet, but was thinking about the super inexpensive sets of o-rings from auto shops that come in huge packs and a variety of sizes
