@@Joe-ny2up he opened for the dead in the 90s taking it back the vibes of the lots and traffic of the 90s and the current tour. current tour has been circus since atlanta/charlotte/raleigh
@@Joe-ny2upI get that Dave himself changed the vibe, but I don't think it's fair to call him jamming w friends a "DMB showcase". As mentioned DMB did open for the Dead in 95, and Dave/Bob are good friends. Oteil guested w DMB at the small club Trax in 1993 when they were still a house band in Charlottesville. Mayer's said a number of times that the first concert he attended on his own accord was DMB at Jones Beach in 1995. Clearly Dave was an inspiration to him. So while I get that him showing up was a complete shift in direction and what was expected, I think it was a special moment for that group of people w. That history. And for the crowd, they got a unique chance to see three guys who represent three different generations and are all arguably masters of their domain.
If anything "ruins the whole Dead vibe" it's having the winner of the 2007 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal as a actual member of the band. But folks have accepted John Mayer because he's got great talent, and so does Dave Matthews, no matter what you think of his own music. This was a great Watchtower. There was even a tip of the hat to Jimi in there.
