I like how you decided to listen to yourself, and put on your glove right when you thought of it. I’ve learned over time that it’s a pretty good idea to listen to those inner warnings 😂
"I'm just WINGING that..." he said as he started carving the wings. HAHA! Great tutorial Doug! The cardinal was my grandmothers favorite bird so I will definitely be giving this a go. Keep up the great work. You are an amazing teacher!
I just realized, you are like the Bob Ross of carving. So calming and informative. One difference being, your afro grows from the chin down. Thanks again for making me a better carver.
Wow! This Cardinal is harder than I thought it would be, love the dog Doug. How about doing a carving of your dog? I think it would be a great project, and fun? I will watch this video again in broken down segments before I start my Cardinal carving since this is how I grasp things faster, I then start the video and carving 1 step at a time, rewind to make sure it's confirmed before moving onto the next step. I like the head turned more approach vs straight on because in real life all birds are turned by moving thier heads back and forth, very realistic! Great job Doug, and thank you for this project!👍👏💯👊
I love that your videos are something a guy can sit down and try in an afternoon even if he isn't an expert carver. I've used several of your videos as tutorials to dry a few new things. Keep carving!
My names Terry from Indiana and my carving club uses 50% alcohol and 50% water and put it in the spray bottle spray your wood with this put it in a plastic bag overnight that will soften the fiber and make it carve much easier. This will not mess with any of the finishes.
Doug the dowels are great. I started with a 5 foot dowel and carved the Bear coming out of the stump first and then cut it off the long dowel. Now just working my way down the same dowel I will do the Cardinal next and then cut him free. I plan on doing this until I feel good enough to turn the dowel into a totem pole of Spirit Animals. Very fun, keeps it inexpensive, and a good way to take the long dowel and do 4 or 5 practice versions which I find allows you to try various paint configurations to get a version you are happiest with. Absolutely great tutorial. Thanks
Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!! You are very good at tutorials, first and foremost. Secondly, I am so excited to carve a cardinal (also a huge fan of those birds) and to be able to use this to create so many other birds as a quick little carve in the limited carving time I have. I think an American Goldfinch would look great with this concept. Please keep doing what you're doing. Coffee on me today. ☕Thanks again!
@Gene Messer. You and Doug are the best. I learn and am inspired to carve by you both. I love both your carving styles. It would be so cool to see one of your ideas on carving a 1 inch dowel.
Thanks for the reminder in creating a 'shadow' over the past few years I've been watching your channel and those tips are particularly helpful. Also glad to see you struggling a bit with harder wood as that's all I can ever get my hands on, thanks brother...
I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing all this video. Because of you I have fell in love or become addicted to carving wooden birds. It wouldn't of been possible without this video, thank you for sharing your tricks and tips to help us that are just getting started. Thank you thank you thank you. ❤
Cool project. Love how simple the carving is and how nice it turns out. I've been a chainsaw carver for 26 years. I'm just now starting to play a little with knife carving. Thanks Doug
I love your vibe man, and your modest attitude on how you bring it and try to show it. So I'm off looking a new walking stick and cut a cardinal on it. Thanks from a Belgian living in Argentina.
I recent started, and I'm carving my first bird from you idea about a Cardinal from a dowel. However, I decided to carve a Dove instead since my wife loves doves, also I'm doing it from a block of wood, she say it looks so real with the details of feathers. I also carved the claws and feet, the Dove is sitting upon a stump with the claws over the front edge. I see a lot of carvers using metal legs, feet and claws for birds, why? I know I put more work into the feet and claws. It has been time consuming but, I think this is one of my best wood carvings. I joined the chat on the 22nd, and thanked you for the ideas about the Cardinal. Anyways, I took picture of my progress now going on 8 days on this Dove, thank you again Doug. 👍💯🥳🕊
Excellent tutorial! My wife has been bugging me to carve a bird. I find birds intimidating. This one looks doable for me. It will be a good addition to the gaggle of your gnomes, bears and assorted other characters sitting around the house. Thanks!
I'm just getting into some knife carving. Ordered a set of good carving knives and being from Missouri, these Cardinals may be my first project. Great tutorial.
Hey Doug! This was my first carve of yours I successfully completed! I did it using a branch from a tulip poplar so I empathized with your hard dowel, love this hobby, and your videos are such a service!
Very new to this hobby and so thankful to have found your channel. I started a bird project from someone else only to toss it as it was too complicated for me and look to find one done by you. You are so much easier to follow thank most. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into making carving understandable.
Hahaha, stop, stop, stop, I'm only just over a minute in and I see these lovely, funny little bird things on sticks and they look great - can't wait to see the rest of this! Man, these are what I would make to hand out to friends and family - wonderful, even though I haven't watched the actual making yet. 😐
You made a guy that didn't think he could carve a bird, carve a bird! It's awesome! Thank you so much for showing us! I learned a lot and now I'm gonna try to make a worry bird! 🐦
New to whittling got a knife for Christmas your videos are amazing! Thank you for all your tips and tricks. Working on a lil hillbilly man now. I've done a few of the 5min wood spirits and a couple gnomes. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos YOUR AMAZING 😍
YES! I have been wanting you to do a cardinal carving. I love the one in woodcarving illustrated but was intimidated to start it, I love the way you explain and actually mark things off, I get a better perspective visually than from just pictures. You by far are my most favorite carver! Thank you for the great video! Looking forward to more of your work! Happy New Year!
Vos Tuto sont de loin les meilleurs que je connaisse Débutante, grâce à vos vidéo je m’amuse et les gens apprécient leurs cadeaux! Un stage chez vous serait le must 😊
Thank you Doug for your terrific channel. I discovered you a week ago and subscribed. I’ve never done wood carving in my life, but you are inspiring me to take up the hobby. My hobby is model aeroplanes and tanks. Take care and thanks once again. Graeme from Australia.
hi doug i so enjoyed this cardinal i love the dowel carvings i am going to try this one as soon as i get to the store to get some dowels thank you for your podcast i look forward to them when i get a notice that they are on see you next time
This is cool. My wife and I watch cardinals in our back yard every day. She would love one of these carvings, so I am going to do this. I think I'll use basswood. Just saying...😎 Many thanks!!
Simply said Thanks for your time and sharing your talent with all of us. Can't wait for you do some more vids back in the canoe and camping adventures.
Thanks! For background. I am a beginner whittler and stumbled on your realm. As I came back to this video for the third time (doing my own cardinal) I realized I would pay money for lessons like this. So...note to self, if I do one of your projects, a coin in the jar. And as to female cardinals...agree close up in the sun, unsurpassed for subtle coppers and russet...be interested in seeing you paint one of these female!
Always love these little carves. I hope this makes it into the 1x1 series you started. A cardinal in some form has been near the top of my list of things I wanted to carve.
Love it Doug! Can't wait to give them a try! I know someone that could really use one of those to bring a smile! You have so inspired me in this new love of mine. I thank you very much!!
Great video Doug. You made me go out and buy a dowel. I'm currently working on a dowel owl. I was glad to see Gene Messer's comment. You two are the best. It would be so cool to see you two do some kind of collaboration. Podcast? Or, Maybe pick a subject to carve and each do your own take on it and then reference each other on your respective videos.
Nice idea for a carving. Your channel has got me started into my own wood carving enjoyment. Thanks for the continued creativity and walking me thru the various techniques.
Thank you for this; I will give it a try; perhaps modify to a chickadee or titmouse; I have 3 children and 9 grandchildren; I have been looking for a piece to carve and give to each of them that would not break easily and was durable and small and simple so it could follow them throughout their lives assuming some of them may be living in small tight quarters etc. with multiple moves from one location to another. They certainly will not be likely to be doing that with a full size decoy or a carving with fragile legs etc.
Hi Doug, I've been following you for a couple of years now, and without doubt this has been my favorite video. I especially like your way of carving the eyes. Keep 'em coming 😁
Thanks for another great tutorial. Love carving from sticks and this one is so easy after some practice. Just a note, in my search for material for walking sticks, I have found that the Alder that grows along the many beaver swamps on or near our property works great. Fairly easy to carve, wet or seasoned, abundant, and free. I enjoy your videos and your wit.
Oh! My Granny is going to LOVE this for mother's day. Thanks for the new carve idea😁 Nice painting. You have really learned a ton about that! Hope i can get that good someday. I bet I can☺️
Another great video Doug!! Will be checking out the different stores. I found in the past that the hobby stores have a much softer wood for sale but more expensive.
Just started carving and this was my first thing to do yesterday. Turned out a little weird eyed, but otherwise i'm quite happy for the first time. Quite the enjoyable and relaxing thing to do.😊 Love your channel!
Doug so much been enjoy the cardinals. Really helps my well being. Thanks for your beautiful work. Although my whittles will never reach your level you have given me the desire to keep striving for a CLEAN whittle
Doug is a punny man I'll give you that. By the way Doug I found it. The Iron wood dowel! I couldn't wait to get started and found a piece of dowel in the garage, must have been petrified. With these arthritic thumbs I had a time. I truly share your pain. Great tutorial, thanks once again for a great carving experience
Hello Doug ! Thank you so much for a new fantastic video. I learn so much. According to Basswood I Can tell you that its impossible to send green basswood to Europe - I once orderd basswood but what I Got was dried in an oven. As hard to carve as the Wood we have over here. Now I use a lot of european linden. Very best regards from Denmark. Esben. Hope my kind of english is understandabel.
I hope you continue with the dowel carving. Sticks would be nice to see also. I am learning a lot from using these smaller pieces. I have tried the bear, which I love. This will be fun to do also.
how many did you have to carve till you felt like you were good with it. My husband's got a little frustrated with this one; yet has Done SO many great carving projects from your videos too! He just wandered. Thanks for all the great ideas
Very nice!!! I have taken about a month off from carving just to recharge and break the cycle. Getting the itch to get the knife back out. This might be my motivation.
“I’m just WINGIN that, it’s not critical” that dad joke ain’t FLYIN over my head mister.
Today I carved this guy. It was my fifth whittle. Thank you so much for sharing your art!
I just realized, you are like the Bob Ross of carving. So calming and informative. One difference being, your afro grows from the chin down.
Thanks again for making me a better carver.
it's crazy, man. you're kind of a new hero of mine. carving is great for a peaceful mind.
Billie is beautiful! Love that you include your pups in the videos! Your carvings are never boring, just please keep making them!
I followed along and carved a bird for my grandmother. She absolutely loved it! Thanks for a great tutorial!

i always recommend watching it through once before trying so you get a better picture of what's coming up
I love that your videos are something a guy can sit down and try in an afternoon even if he isn't an expert carver. I've used several of your videos as tutorials to dry a few new things. Keep carving!
Thanks for returning for another year. I check every day to see when a new video pops up.
My names Terry from Indiana and my carving club uses 50% alcohol and 50% water and put it in the spray bottle spray your wood with this put it in a plastic bag overnight that will soften the fiber and make it carve much easier. This will not mess with any of the finishes.
Great TIP. Gonna try that.

i knew someone would appreciate my struggle haha
It does my heart good hearing Doug complain about his wood 😂 I have groaned that my wood is much tougher than every carver on UA-cam.
glad you appreciate my struggle haha
@@dougLinker.....but please tell me you power stropped that knife before you started...😂...Happy New Year Doug !

Many thanks!!
Just carved and painted one. Great quick project! I finished the black eye with a touch of gloss poly. Made it more realistic. Thanks for the video!
You make this look so easy, yet I know that it was more of a challenge since you had a hard dowel. Beautiful results! Great video. Thank-you!
Thank you for sharing these, I really enjoy carving these guys!
Simply said Thanks for your time and sharing your talent with all of us. Can't wait for you do some more vids back in the canoe and camping adventures.
I love that the head is turned. I think it gives it movement.

This is a great design- love your attitude to carving. Thank you!
A good rendition of a cardinal
I agree his female with her lipstick beak is the preferred for beauty. Nice project and blue Jay is my choice for painting
Thanks

Love to see another black wing pencil user!

I love your cardinals. Little concerned about my painting skills. But will give it a try. Great video . Jim's wood shop.
Please, make a video carving the 3 wise men. I live in Puerto Rico and we celebrate this festivity on January 6th.
Brilliant carving. I love the eyes. Adaptable to fit many animals
These are awesome!!!!!! May god bless you endlessly
Very nice!!!
I have taken about a month off from carving just to recharge and break the cycle. Getting the itch to get the knife back out. This might be my motivation.
Bob Ross vibes. Thanks for the video!
I love the cardinals! ❤
