How is your whittling going man?
Hi! Im a 27 year old woman from Wisconsin and ever since I was a kid I wanted to wood carve. A dream once forgotten but now I'm taking a hiatus from my other lived hobbies and I rediscovered wood carving! Your video is one of many I've watched in the last few days. However, your video is my favorite for the simple fact that I feel like I'm right there next to you, enjoying coffee, the sounds of nature and just hanging out with a buddy. Great video sir! I can't wait to look at your other videos!
What part of Wisconsin do you live?
Top Vidio 👍 thanks for sharing..! Always succses.. greeting from Indonesian traditonal gold prospecting 🇮🇩⚒️⛏️👍👍

Ben, thanks! We do get picture and I figure I have a few years before girls come along!😅 He wants to join the local carving club and they are putting on a 6 week beginners class in October. He asked me if I would go and take him, I told him nothing would make me more happy! Have a great day!

Nice and easy carving!!! Sweet !!! Nicely done!!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍👍
19 year old whittler here, we’re keeping the art form going! Your videos are a HUGE help I love them all. Thank you brother
Nothing I can say but....What a great video!
Thans you Doug for these nice mushroom examples. The carves beneeth the head are in Dutch called "plaatjes".
Those slits would be called “gills” Doug. I was wondering if you were going to add them, with a v-tool or gouge…and you did! Great job and fun little carving! Thank You as always.
I've been hoping for some coffee and carving. These are my favorite. Thanks!
Great way to spend time in the forest on a nice day. I like doing in the the fall. 🙂
Awesome. Another nice carving video.
My son just had our first grandbaby and I can't wait til I can teach him whittling, wood carving and woodworking.
Hey Doug l love mushrooms especially the edible kind, awesome and thanks for sharing!😎😎😎👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯✅✅✅
My granddaughter likes mushrooms so I think I think I will carve her a mushroom! Thanks for the ideas Doug!
Looks like fun! Good to see Finnigan, especially on International Dog Day!
Brilliant. Now I’ve gotta carve a mushroom.
Thank you.
I'm just short of 60 and only have shop bought wood 🙃 so I'm grateful for your help
Great carving and video.
Great and fun carving, I did a bunch of your little mushrooms with the faces, I like those to
You make it look so simple and your carvings are beautiful. It would be really cool to have a dad like you, I could sit and watch / listen to you all day long...definitely going to try this!
I’m certainly hooked! Thanks for getting me started Doug.
Every piece of wood has something in it…..you just have to find it. Old carvers never die, we just whittle away. 👍 started carving at the young age of 30 yrs old….36 years later I am still at it carving song birds, birds of prey and ducks. Enjoy watching your videos Doug…..keep up the good work. 👍🇺🇸
These look great Doug!
Looks like a lot of fun to do
I really like these kind of videos. It just relaxing and feels doable. Many thanks
This was awesome! A man and his loyal companion chilling out in the wilderness together. Incredible carving tutorial! Cheers
67 years old here, my 13 year old granddaughter has become interested in carving. I'm thrilled!!
Cool thing about mushrooms - impossible to get it wrong!
I started wittling when I was 14 I’m 15 now and I’m really enjoying it and really glad I found your channel
How appropriate right now. I am a fungi fan and just thinking about making a new character for my collection. Love your work.
Thanks for taking the time to share. The tutorials inspire me to take your carvings and make my version of it. 👍🏻
I've been on a mushroom carving frenzy for about a month. Some of them have turned out quite well. Time to put some color on them now. And then give them away. Lol. Brings smile when people get free hand carved things. Best part of a project.
Hand made gifts are from the heart not the check book!!!
30 and learning to carve now - love these videos as motivation, thanks!
Agreed, your easy quick whittles are fun, satisfying and a great way to get the "kids" interested. Thank you.
Thanks!
Nice whittling as always! Well explained! So fun to watch!
Looks like lots of carving fun.
I'm 25 years old and started carving 4 years ago when I found your channel! I'm absolutely obsessed with it.
Thanks for the video. 71 on Sunday.
34 years old here. Love your channel already. Finally found what I was looking for. So excited to do more carving once I go on vacation 🙂
Love it. Mushrooms are a fun carve, I always have a folding saw in my truck, for found branches. Thank you
Good thinking Tom I going to put a folding saw in my car as well 👍🇦🇺
@@frankhavinh9066 it’s fun when you carve because any tree, branch , drift wood all have new meaning 😂
Sometimes as fun as carving.
Doug, I'm not sure if you read the comments on your videos but you have helped me tremendously! I've been struggling lately with life junk and its really cluttered my mind and caused me to seep back into a depression state. Carving has helped me declutter my mind so much!! It started with one of your videos, the sounds of the wood being carved and your amazingly calm and peaceful demeanor really spoke to me and i've been carving in my free time lately. It has really helped my mental state in a way I never expected. So, thank you so much for what you do, it goes much farther than you might think! Keep it up and stay peaceful!
Great tutorial as always. Would love to see a video from you on carving that Morel mushroom. Any chance ?
I'm a 25 y/o woman and just got into whittling (: I've always been interested, but finally had the opportunity to get a nice little begginner knife set! I love your videos
Doug - love your carving style, and your easy going commentary. Just a pleasure to watch and listen to.
Great carving and explaining. All the best. Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family.
Been selling little mushrooms and other carvings locally for a while and this has given me a lot of great advice.
Your so lucky to be surrounded by raw wilderness! Here in the UK it's virtually none existent and what is about is in poor condition. Enjoy what you have and protect it.
plenty woods and forests up in Scotland :)
Wow I'd disagree here! South England is full of beautiful countryside I can only presume you live in a midlands city? Bet you can find a forest if you went north or south for a half hour...
@@marca5883 Your right there is! But they're all very very small and insignificant compared to what Doug has around him. UK forests are in poor condition meaning they don't always have a thriving ecosystem from the smallest insect to the largest mammal. They often have large roads cutting through them also. Did you know we're the worst country for tree cover in the whole of the G7 countries. It's about to get alot worse aswell with all the large infrastructure projects these busy bodies are passing through aswell as the cost of living crisis that's caused a rise in log burners which guess what = more trees for the chop.
We don't even have a single stream or river that's passed a clean bill of health, they're literally all polluted.

Great video! I'm 19 year's old and just started carving. My 93 year old neighbor carved his whole life and did some amazing stuff. I showed him my first spoon and he was really proud of my work and now he shows me his techniques
I'm 26 and got hooked into the hobby watching your videos. Love the mushrooms was funny i was just thinking of doing one the other day then here comes Doug with a video giving me great inspiration on how to go about it :D
I’m in my early 30s, and you’re a big reason I’ve taken up wood carving. Keep it up!
28 years old and I just finished my lunch break carving a little tractor for my daughter. You've definitely inspired me and many others
Thank you Doug for another great video. Always entertaining and informative.
Stay well.
In Alaska we have plenty of trees so my husband and I will start testing with alder, poplar and other types. We love your videos, thanks for taking time to do these. You are right we need to teach the younger generations too :)
Love the videos, Doug! So laid back and relaxed. I’ve scrolled through the comments and didn’t see it, but the ribs on the underside of the mushroom cap are called the gills…
Love see you carving and replicate it by myself but I really really love your coffe and carving. Nothing better.
The slits under the mushroom are called gills. Thanks for making these videos, super helpful to us youngins just beginning the hobby.
Thanks Doug
Started whittling less than a year ago, and I’m hooked! It was from watching your videos. Great way to stay away from social media now, and totally back to feeling like I did 40 years ago, no stress! Thank you!
Another great project. I need to thank you again for getting me into this great hobby. Finn is awesome as always
Thanks for the Inspiration Doug! Carved a little mushroom out of an old stick today :)
Outstanding as always Doug. I think you have inspired me to carve a mushroom themed chess set for a friend. I think if I get rolling now I maybe done in time for Christmas. If not he will get it for his birthday!
I agree we need to expose more younger folks to the joy of doing this. The ones that jump on board as youngsters will still be enjoying it when they retire someday.
So, I'm 80 & started carving about 2 yrs. ago after seeing your videos. Just terrific and please keep it up. Your calmness plus the camera angles & extra effort you put into the scenes is classic. Thank you!
Hey John, same age and began two years ago, what a coincidence, eh? I have carved a few things and posted them on Facebook and have gotten tremendous response. Amazing. Keep up the good carving!
@@jamespridemore3565 Yep, what a coincidence. I looked on FB for your stuff but too many James Pridemores to go through.
@@probi1001 I hear you, there is a lot of garbage out there. I did not realize there were so many James Pridemore’s out there, I am the only one in El Dorado Hills Ca.
I love these "hiking" videos, finding fallen wood to work with. Shows great respect for the land.
Very magical !
Cheeky bit of green wood for you there Doug. It's great finding carving wood out in the wild.
Good job 👏
Hi! younger folk here! I'm doing my research to learn the skill. I love the mushrooms! I can't wait to try it!
Doug, you handle that carving knife like a surgeon handles a scalpel. You also have artist eyes and can see a figure inside of a chunk of wood trying to get out. You really do beautiful work.
I have hope that the younger generation gets into stuff like this, as a 17 year old I love whittling and glad I just got into it.
I'm really enjoying your craving videos. Thank you!
👍👍✌️
You're the Bob Ross of wood carving
Oauu super 👍👋
Thank you for your inspiration! I’m hooked!
Great carving and good advice. I was convinced I didn't need a glove but happened to be wearing one when the blade slipped and caught the joint of my finger hard. Closed my eyes convinced my finger would be floating in the glove but apart from the top layer of skin going it was all good! Really enjoy your videos.
glove saved me too great advice
Thanks for sharing your experience Scott - “ a word to the wise is sufficient” 😛 p.s. please remind me again and again 😝🙏
You sit on that bench but once a year Doug. Occasionally I don't know if it's the winter or the fall deer running through the woods you've filmed that I was wondering what happened to the bird boxes that you made and put on the trees did any owls ever move in, your whittling is always a pleasure to watch.
Not exactly young at 42 but watching your channel started me wanting to carve during lick down. I love it, I'm still trying to build up my hand strength as it seems to always make my thumb joint swell up but I'm proud of what I've made and always look forward to your tutorials to help me!! Just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to this wonderful hobby! X
I keep coming back to your video, very relaxing, great to see someone making something look easy.
Thank you sir for two things. 1 being your demeanor and 2 your consideration for making carving easy and fun. I have watched almost all of your videos and enjoy the calmness and clear thought it brings. Please keep coming up with these awesome carves.
I started carving when I watched Paul Sellers sharpen a chisel and carve a spoon. I had an old beat up chisel that I always thought you had to have a hammer to use, but I had a stone so I set about learning to sharpen it. Sure enough, I got the edge so that you could just push it thru the wood. Wound up carving a spoon that day. I was hooked, tho never thinking I could carve anything else. But I saw Mary May do some relief carving and I figured I could do that. Ordered some neat Pfeil chisels and had some fun for a while. But then I saw you carve a wood spirit if I remember correctly and you made it so plain and simple I got me a block of wood and tried it but quickly realized I did not have the right tool. You recommended a Mike Shipley knife you used on that carving. I ordered one and what a dream that knife has been. I have enjoyed trying many of your carvings since then (it's been a few years now), some I did better on than others, but I enjoyed the process no matter if I succeeded or not. Carving is so peaceful. And you learn with each one. Lowers the blood pressure lol! Thanks Doug. You've inspired many of us! By the way, the Shipley has never been on a stone. It was razor sharp the day I got it, and just a strop, and it is razor sharp again. I have since ordered some different ones and they are OK, but I love that Shipley knife! It is still my favorite. Guess what, I just watched a bit further, and it appears you are using my Shipley in this vid! What a great knife.
Absolutely brilliant. You are a Genius.
You got me into carving last November now an old friend of mine who is now retired is getting into it after i gave him some mushrooms and Easter Island Heads.
Thanks to you he has now a new hobby. I would also like to get younger folk whittling.
Love your work and videos. Stay safe buddy.
I really like the way you presented this one brother 🤘
Hey Doug, greeting from one of the younger ones! I'm 29 years old and carving since 2018, and you really got me hooked to this lovely passion! Love all your videos and the effort you put in the channel! This video was close to the great carving and coffee videos!
Same age same passion here!
@@Alberto1993 Nice to hear that!
I got you beat at 15 lmao
@@Alberto1993 high five for the 29 yo's! brand new at this, carved a little fox and gave it as a xmas present!
Hey Doug! Writing from tropical Costa Rica here. Love your videos, your tutorials and recommendations! Starting this carving adventure with this suggestion of a project. Hope it comes out as great as yours. P.S: PLEASE keep on going with the super material! Helps me a lot with mental health and explore creativity. Thanks a ton!
Perfect! I love it. Thank you, so much, for sharing your carving lessons.
Hey Doug, I'm 18 and ever since I discovered your channel a year and a half ago whittling has become one of my favourite hobbies. I was using ultra-grainy kindling and an opinel then, but I was so happy with the little wizard I made that I've kept carving characters to this day. I always recommend your channel to other beginners. Thank you for the opportunity!
Doug thank you for your videos I'm a 64 yr old paraplegic, my legs quit on me 10 years ago I have started working with knifes I love it
I just found your videos, and I really like watching you work! I'm 27, and just got my first set of knives. Watching you makes me excited to get started!
