This is my take on Tom Hindes 5 minute wizard. What i like about this carving is that once you get the gist of the cuts you can apply them in all kinds of ways using different mediums from sticks to pencils and still end up with a very satisfying outcome.I did not know what to name this video so although the title may seem alittle clickbaity I truly believe this is something that anyone can do and get almost immediate results that will only build confidence in all carvers alike -hope you like it and a big thanks for watchin
-if you are new to woodcarving I have several videos on getting started and tool/wood selection that may help you on your way

Doug Outside I just tried my first ever carving. Took a pine round maybe 2.5" diameters quartered it and gave it ago. Not as nice as yours but it is at least recognizable.
When you do a branch do you make an edge to work from or work from round. Us love to give that a go

Doug your a great carver and it's good to see someone carving Tom's wizards again. Tom was my teacher and mentor in the carving world, we met at a senior activity center where ole boy's would get together to carve and chat over coffee . I would drive an hour from home to Delaware Ohio after a nightshift and carve with these guys, to have such knowledge to pick at was a wonder to have at my disposal as i don't thing there was anyone there under 60 yrs old that hadn't carved their whole life. As a young man this was great fun.
Keep up the great work Doug and you now have a new subscriber, cause my wife wants me to carve her some of your stuff for her collection.

About 8 months ago, I began watching this video and it became my introduction to woodcarving. I think I watched it about 50 times before I ever picked up a knife and piece of wood to carve. And, it was on the 51st time viewing the video I began carving and never looked back. How did I know about Doug Linker, I didn’t. In fact, I didn’t know how you tube even worked but I learned quickly and Doug Linker’s name came up. I watched this first video and have been on board ever since. I love it!
I want to share this next part because it may encourage others to take up the hobby. In November, 2017, I was diagnosed with colon cancer and the slippery slope of operations and chemo began. At 78, it was not easy to have this happen. About 9 months later and many rounds of chemo under my belt, with the help of my doctor and his staff of caregivers, I was cancer free. As an after effect, the chemo left my feet and hands numb and tingly and still are today. The.numbness in my feet even caused me to give up driving. So, being free of cancer, i no longer could drive nor could I write a complete sentence. This was unacceptable and something had to change, and it did. Through the help of the VA, I took and passed an Adaptive Driver Course and today, I am able to drive once again. How I arrived at carving, I haven’t a clue but I knew working with my hands by carving something had to happen. And, it has. Today, I can write better and can carve, mostly all of Doug’s creations. Now, almost 84, I am looking forward to improving my skills. Even my family loves what I have done so far with the carving. So, thanks Doug for your informative and entertaining videos. They have changed my life and it keeps me off the streets at night.

I've now watched this video about 86 times and, without slashing my hand but taking forever, made 3 gnome heads. You've really rung my bell and I thank you. I have nice little German carving knives, but they just won't take an edge like my pricey chisels, so I'll probably do more with pine than basswood once I've used up that block I bought.
