This is my take on Tom Hindes 5 minute wizard. What i like about this carving is that once you get the gist of the cuts you can apply them in all kinds of ways using different mediums from sticks to pencils and still end up with a very satisfying outcome.I did not know what to name this video so although the title may seem alittle clickbaity I truly believe this is something that anyone can do and get almost immediate results that will only build confidence in all carvers alike -hope you like it and a big thanks for watchin
-if you are new to woodcarving I have several videos on getting started and tool/wood selection that may help you on your way

Doug Outside n
Very good
I am new to carving and building on small projects. So far so good.
Thank you for your work
Please can you make the pencil for my kid PLEASE
Doug Outside I just tried my first ever carving. Took a pine round maybe 2.5" diameters quartered it and gave it ago. Not as nice as yours but it is at least recognizable.
When you do a branch do you make an edge to work from or work from round. Us love to give that a go
Reached back to scout days and practiced with a bar of soap. So fun and easy!
"I found a stick" He says, while approaching a tree with a chainsaw! 😆 My kinda comedy, mate!
that was like stick poaching
Erik Perlot, made me laugh! Stick poaching 😂... so true.
Did you see he was looking around too before he cut it down? 😂
I said the exact same thing....lmao! 😆
That was worth a good belly laugh!
I'm not sure if you realise. But my friend. You have a great voice for teaching. There is no condescending undertones. No smugness. You sound so humble jet wise. Im going to subscribe. I want to learn to do this. This is a great "gateway carve"
He reminds me of Bob Ross.
@@kailyreyes2448 Bob "Chainsaw" Ross?
His voice is so similar to Frank Zappa's he, could be a voice double
I thought the same. Very relaxing and great video to watch. His other videos are great too.
A rare enough talent on UA-cam
The "Bob Ross" of wood carving.
Colonel Slanders ... you are right about that! Doug’s voice is so pleasant and calming.
Doug is very good but I think that title belongs to Jim Redhawk. (Just my opinion, of course!)
Colonel Slanders I was thinking the same thing! So calming
Lol I concur
Colonel Slanders negative goats rider Bob Rosses closest friends are trees
Don't mind me.

You are a savior
Doug is the Bob Ross of carving. Admitting he’s not the best but all the while making some awesome carvings.
I will totally agree with that.
I second that statement
“Happy little tree” = proceed to cut off a full branch
He looks like Yoda or grand master to me.
I believe a whole new world just opened up. Stepping inside.
Same here haha
R I T E ? I’m buying tools in the morning!
Right, just ordered tools... hahahahaha
How is it going 3 years later? I am just starting but loving it
This video is 20 minutes long, yet it took me like 3 hours to make my first little wizard :)
Thank you, it turned out amazing!
First you get good, then you get fast, then you get good and fast 😢
Slow is smooth smooth is fast
Hi.. I just followed your step by step instructions and carved my first face with great results, I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make these instructions available I very much appreciate it.
ive been seeing these little faces for years. my gramps left me his carving kit when he passed. I think it's about time I put them to use. You made it so simple to follow along. Love it.
This video has it all. Calming voice, wood scraping sounds, bird calls, beautiful carving, wonderful talent, and an adorable dog. I've had it saved for a long time, and I'm sad I only watched it now. I'll definitely be watching more!
Couldn't wait to get started but didn't have the proper needed items so I started carving carrots with a kitchen knife & when I ran out, I started on potatoes.
WHat a clever man. SO creative. I'm a lady of 74 and ALWAYS wanted to learn how to whittle these little faces but don't have the proper tools either. Your carrots are a good beginning. I want to see the faces AGE as they get shriveled .... hahaha.....
Wow amazing!
not making any excuses, nice
This made me laugh.
I've been thinking of a way to get my 9 yr old into carving/whittling. He's not comfortable holding a knife at all. I thought about soap carving for him to get him started and comfortable. I do like the carrot and potato idea as well.
Imagine being camping and just grab a stick and whip up this little guy, for the kids you'd be a superhero! ❤
My favorite part of the video as well. Made me smile!
Yes, that's what he said
"found a stick" lol that made my day 😊
HAHAHAH. My thoughts exactly!
in my country (austria) you get arrested, lol
@@simpleking100 what do you Get arrested for in Austria?
cutting a tree, near the road
That made me laugh out loud!
This has got to be one of the most straightforward tutorials I have found. No BS just a very easy to follow lesson. I have to stop here and get a bandaid. Thank you for your time!
I love that he says “I don’t know how long I was out here” it shows he loves to do what he does! Great job!
I love that he didn’t have “music “ distracting the video… loved the natural bird and nature sounds to compliment really great carving
Thanks
I’m a beginner and this is the best woodcarving teaching video I have seen! Easy to follow! Excellent teacher without all the high pitched hype I’ve seen (and heard) in other videos. Very natural flow. Thank you!
"Don't do it on your lap, don't do it on your throat... you know... don't be dumb" - Great advice for pretty much any situation :-)

I carved a 5 minute wizard!!! Thank you Doug Linker and Tom Hindes for sharing your knowledge.
A lot of people all around the world have taken to carving. Because of your way of teaching. Just a big thank you for making carving easier to understand and fun to do.
I just decided to get into this hobby and I can see why having a super sharp knife means so much.
Doug , started carving 2 weeks ago and already have 5 done . Thanks for getting me started on this new hobby . I love it . Thanks for the guides
I barely started with wood carving. Did this nice figure today, as my third project. So nice and satisfying. Boosted my confidence and morale and I’m feeling very happy to keep going.
Thank you for your videos Doug!
God, this is my third carving that I’ve done and every time that I make a new carving it just makes me fall more in love with this hobby, genuinely thankful for this channel and all the help it’s given me
Thankyou sir!! The most relaxing part of my day is watching your videos!! No crazy background music, your voice is calming, a bit of humor and your teaching technique is perfect! And, of course, at the end of your video i have a wonderful project completed. Your hard work and time is greatly appreciated!😊❤🇺🇸
I love it. Never stop creating and making it easy for us novice carvers. 😇👍
I love the humour you add to your videos Doug. Thanks for taking the time to show us these skills. Whether from you or if you’re sharing someone else’s ideas it’s very much appreciated.
I’ve been carving about 2 months. While I was looking for a good first carve I ran across this video. By the time I was done I didn’t feel like a nubie anymore. For all the first timers out there this is a GREAT place to start.
Good luck with it.
I frickin love your sense of humor! Adding not to cut by your throat as a safety precaution….genius! Thanks for posting! Looking forward to more
Thankyou for showing us learners step by step. Greetings from Sydney Australia
Wood carving AKA Whittling, is an activity that was never even remotely on my radar as an activity to take up. Till now. Thanks for the inspiration! You make it look easy, yet with good instruction and guidance in your videos to help get started.
This is one of the first things I did as a carver and was not near as simple as you showed. Your explanation was miles ahead of the other and will be doing a few this week with a few personal changes which is where the real fun starts. Thanks Doug I really appreciate what you do.
Thousands of years later and people are still unknowingly carving Odin. :P
Hail
That was after his carving knife slipped when he tried carving and drinking a gallon of mead at the same time. @
I thought they looked more like woodland gnomes :D
It's litteraly a man with beard
Hail
You have inspired me to take this up as a hobby. I am 54 and hope to learn a lot from you. I liked and subscribed. Thanks!
Not everyday does UA-cam make a worthwhile suggestion. I found this surprisingly relaxing and motivating to go grab my first knife given to me and whittle some stuff
I could watch this to sleep. So peaceful man, good job👍
The best basic carving video I've seen so far and really makes me want to try. It's refreshing to see videos shoot outdoors. The background sound of nature.
This stuff is just so cool can you Imagine sitting on the porch in a rocking Chair and carving away
I like you! As others have said, you have an excellent demeanor in your instruction. Thanks for the video! These little guys are such fun.
Doug your a great carver and it's good to see someone carving Tom's wizards again. Tom was my teacher and mentor in the carving world, we met at a senior activity center where ole boy's would get together to carve and chat over coffee . I would drive an hour from home to Delaware Ohio after a nightshift and carve with these guys, to have such knowledge to pick at was a wonder to have at my disposal as i don't thing there was anyone there under 60 yrs old that hadn't carved their whole life. As a young man this was great fun.
Keep up the great work Doug and you now have a new subscriber, cause my wife wants me to carve her some of your stuff for her collection.
The sound of carving and the birds singing in the trees was reaaaally relaxing, as well as your voice and attitude. Thanks, brother, you earned a new subscriber. :-)
Thank you so much for sharing your art. Loved it.
Viewed for the carving instruction and thoroughly enjoyed the entire tutorial; especially the comic relief @ 2:43 with the finding of a stick at the side of the road..... Can't get them any greener than that! Looking forward to more.....!
About 8 months ago, I began watching this video and it became my introduction to woodcarving. I think I watched it about 50 times before I ever picked up a knife and piece of wood to carve. And, it was on the 51st time viewing the video I began carving and never looked back. How did I know about Doug Linker, I didn’t. In fact, I didn’t know how you tube even worked but I learned quickly and Doug Linker’s name came up. I watched this first video and have been on board ever since. I love it!
I want to share this next part because it may encourage others to take up the hobby. In November, 2017, I was diagnosed with colon cancer and the slippery slope of operations and chemo began. At 78, it was not easy to have this happen. About 9 months later and many rounds of chemo under my belt, with the help of my doctor and his staff of caregivers, I was cancer free. As an after effect, the chemo left my feet and hands numb and tingly and still are today. The.numbness in my feet even caused me to give up driving. So, being free of cancer, i no longer could drive nor could I write a complete sentence. This was unacceptable and something had to change, and it did. Through the help of the VA, I took and passed an Adaptive Driver Course and today, I am able to drive once again. How I arrived at carving, I haven’t a clue but I knew working with my hands by carving something had to happen. And, it has. Today, I can write better and can carve, mostly all of Doug’s creations. Now, almost 84, I am looking forward to improving my skills. Even my family loves what I have done so far with the carving. So, thanks Doug for your informative and entertaining videos. They have changed my life and it keeps me off the streets at night.
I keep coming back. Been doing it for 6 years now. Love this guy! He got me into my favorite hobby and brought me a lot of peace, that I definitely needed in my life
That was so awesome.
My Dad learned to whittle while he was 2nd Mate on a barge that went through the Great Lakes.
He could take a piece of wood and whittle out a boat...ship with sails... and put it in a bottle.
I'm going to try this one!
Thanks for sharing!
@jimBO
Don't be silly, thats why the ship sank...lol.
Sorry, couldnt resist.
I've been wondering how to get started on woodcarving. These really look so great and it feels doable! Thank you for inspiring!🥰
If you are art lovers you can do it.its a best way to show your creativity.
I loved your video. You should whiddel one of those wizards on the end of a spoon. That would be the coolest spoon ever!!!
"Whiddle"? Umm, do you mean to say "whittle", by any chance?
Thank you Doug, you gave me HOURS of peace and happiness while carving this little man.
Wow, I love it ! Man, it's the real spirit of wood, simplicity, forest ............ it's a cool spirit of life. I will follow this carving way. Thx from France.
This was my first successful carving. It's not perfect but I'm proud of it. Doug did a great job of providing instructions for a beginner. He has a great sense of humor. I look forward to trying some of his other patterns.
The way you chip of the wood is very satisfying..
This is my second wood carving video I’ve watched, but something about this entire video really spoke to my soul. Looks like I’ll be taking up wood carving little wizards in any chunk of wood I can find.
Carved my first spirit today. The kids loved it. Thanks, Doug!
Comedy! Just driving down the road and find a stick. pull out the chain saw and cut it off the tree.. Doug, That is true comedy. Thank you!!! I havent laughed like that in forever.
Loved it looked like he was in town ha ha its a felony in Hawaii people were taking cuttings from the plants and trees in Hilo
Imagine explaining this to the cops.
"I needed to carve a wizard, sir."
🤣😂🤣🤦♂️☝️
Love the twittering birds in the background.
Is there any kind of particular knife carving kit you'd recommend or is the one you're using versatile enough for someone just starting out?
The best teacher on UA-cam, so relaxing and informative. Doug, you have inspired me so much - thank you.
You're like the Bob Ross of woodcarving. I love it.
Lol I like how you found your stick ;-) Nice project ;-)
Just had to watch again and do one ;-)
This was my first carve, did it this morning. Came out great. Easy, highly recommend. Used basswood and a couple of Flexcuts.
which flexcut knives
@@lindagraves559 The set that comes with 4 knives, that's all I remember.
Super video, Doug! Carving over your camera may be tough, but it is a very clear angle to see what your knife is doing.
Thanks for this video. A year after seeing this, I have a love for carving I never thought I would. So thank you so much for it.
Appreciate listening to a man who doesn't cuss.. refreshing. Thank you sir!
Today was my very first try at carving. I tried not to ‘be dumb’ but I accidentally cut his nose off! At least it wasn’t mine! I like it to pass the time during quarantine and I’ll keep trying! Thanks!
Been curious about whittling for years. Just bought a couple knives to try it, this video has me excited for their arrival! Thank you for this video
I can tell you its bloody addictive so satisfying when you see how your improvement each time u carve
@@bwxbwx6453 It is very addicting!
Assisto por horas e não me canso. Muito bom. Obrigado
I found inspiration in your video for the simple and intuitive creation of a face you are very good even if sometimes you leave the room completely, thank you
"And then I never go to bed and im always tired." Me too man! It takes alot of me to pull out of a project when im in the zone.
Thank you for showing me this. I'm just about started getting interested in wood carving and this is a great first project.
all of these carvings look just like the host!
Fun video,, only problem is..I think everyone in my small town is watching " Doug Outside",, none of the trees in our little park have a branch left that is low enough to reach....Too funny !! Always a good time with one of your videos,Thank you for sharing....Stay Safe and God Bless....
Adorable little wizard!!! I love it :)
Thank you so much!
Doug, thanks for sharing! Your statement “a quick, fun, little project...” is spot on!
Thanks Doug, great little project indeed! I made my first attempt last night and my family approves! I love that tiny Wizard:)
Actually heading out on a camping trip tomorrow, can't wait to have a go.
Excellent video and great skill.
My grandpa taught me as a kid to make these. It was fun doing these.
A mis 58 años por fin puedo aprender a tallar madera! Esta leccion esta buenisima para iniciar, me suscribo porque esto se viene divertido! Saludos, éxitos y bendiciones desde Guayaquil- Ecuador. Gracias Doug!
Hi Doug. I followed your example and made a jig for halving the blocks. Worked perfectly. Thanks so much.
Fantastic! I laughed so hard when you “found” that stick lol! This is was a marvelous watch!
Wow that was relaxing to watch! Going to rewatch this in the morning and get a stick and knife to follow along. U got a great voice
I can’t be the first to say this, but you, my friend, are the Bob Ross of woodcraft. The joy, freedom, and satisfaction in your work are radiant!
I've now watched this video about 86 times and, without slashing my hand but taking forever, made 3 gnome heads. You've really rung my bell and I thank you. I have nice little German carving knives, but they just won't take an edge like my pricey chisels, so I'll probably do more with pine than basswood once I've used up that block I bought.
I've never heard of this before, the carving of wood like this, I'm SO happy I came across this, I'm off to find some sticks!!!!
This was in my recommended. I have no idea why, but I'm surprisingly not dissapointed. 😂
Its because the UA-cam algorithm knows your likes and interests better than you know your likes and interests.
UA-cam knows bro
I am goung to try this one and get me some awesome little christmas presents started. Thnks Doug
Another beautiful topic on carving, Doug is one very interesting person with all sorts of interesting ideas
Vous êtes un grand pédagogue. Vous rendez la sculpture accessible et surtout, vous me donnez le goût d’essayer!
Awesome!!! Love this! Just ordered a 3 piece carving knife set! Thank you!!!
Awsome video, you just helped me find my new hobby, thanks for sharing.
dude, you look and sound like my uncle
laughed when you got those "sticks on the side of the road" you inspired me and my wife to pick up this as a hobby thanks and cheers

I love this guy he is a pro, the way he plays with wood is like he is drinking a glass of water, so peaceful so full of life and handsome and a good voice too by the look of him he is thoughtful too 🙂
I like carving outside too , listen to the birds in the background. Thanks Doug looks like a fun little carving.
Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge. An Air Force Veteran buddy of mine introduced me to the world of woodcarving and whittling. This helps me significantly with stress. It takes me to a different dimension of existence and peace. I just need a leather strop and compound to keep the tool sharp.
TERRIFIC tutorial - liked ans subbed.
Many thanks!
Watching this right after severing a main artery in my hand from wood carving.
HAHAhahahaha...... just don''t get blood on your creation.
Helps if you dont do that
"Don't be stupid" Sorry, just kidding, I hope you healed well
Oh man! Maybe I’ll get that protective glove after all... Hope all is well now.
Great carving and the basis of many of my carvings from santa ornaments to adding feet under the beard for a gnome Thanks again for sharing
Excellent work. For those who always wished they could carve wood you have shown the way. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.🙏🏻
This dude is like the Bob Ross of wood carving. That was super relaxing just to watch. Also learned some good techniques
