My 4 year old son says he wants to be a beekeeper when he grows up and heads been saying this for over a year. We live on 140 acres in southeast Texas and are opening a winery/ meadery. Essentially, I need recommendations on ethical beekeeping, the how to and not to. Recommendations?

I have been keeping bees for over 40 years and it is pretty much nonsense. The "top bar hive' has been around a very long time, nothing new there. Bees overwinter in Langston hives all over the country with no problem, if the beekeeper does not screw things up for the bees. Leaving too many honey supers on is a mistake. He is so knowledgeable. It will be awesome if a swarm ends up coming to your box in the tree stand. The info about the sides of the boxes being too thin and not keeping them warm enough is really good to know.
I had read an article that said a main reason why bees are dying in America is because farmers import hives from states away. I had no idea how simple it is to catch a local hive. And so much better for the environment. I'm also looking forward to see if they catch a hive.

Just add more insulation to the hive and allow more honey to stay in the hive for the winter months. There are quite a few beekeepers in the colder states on UA-cam to find. Might I also recommend to look at the top bar hive, a more natural way for bees to do their thing, a bit less productive in terms of honey production, but beekeeping is a hobby anyways.

Can't wait to see how I do. I work off shore in the Gulf of Mexico every 2 weeks. When I go home this time, I will be building and installing swarm hives while I build my first Layen's hive. @@festorfamine Not allowed. It's not an apartment condo - it's townhouses, so our roofs are slanted. The board won't even let us hang bird feeders in our yards. Last year I had to pull up all of my ivy or be fined because they said rats could hide in it.

I live in Michigan, and we get some bad winters. I add a "Quilt Box" to the top of the hive to catch moisture and add extra insulation. I also wrap my hives with 2" thick insulation. It helps.
@Wildflour Momma It is essentially a small box with burlap or screen on the bottom, filled with sawdust, cedar shavings or some other organic material. The box sets on top of the topmost box the bees inhabit and is said to "absorb moisture" and "retain the nest scent and heat." I build mine a little bit different- I take a deep, and make 2 boxes with a gap in between (to let the heat rise). The saw dust will be wet from all of the condensate that it collects from the hive. It does work and it insultates the top I've also put a medium sized box - solid on the bottom filled with sawdust on the bottom of the hive to insulate the base.. I live in Michigan.. We can sometimes get -20F here in the winter.. sometimes -30+

Wondering if Bee Bread is good for Allergies? From one UA-camr to another, I found this amazingly Interesting and Informative. Thanks. Want to try the ancient recipe for sure.
The pollens in the honey change each year...the enzymes that are beneficial are destroyed as it's heated. I've heard to heat only to 98 degrees and the more the honey crystalizes (which people think is bad), the more enzymes are still in the honey. I would think the bee bread, eaten raw, would have these benefits since not heating. Worth some more searching out, I would think. Let us know your results with the recipe!
My wife has been taking honey and bee pollen each day and not had her previous 2 allergy shots a week for 5 years now. It definitely works for environmental allergies! It didn't affect her pet dander allergy of course. 😔 Haven't tried actual bee bread, will be trying though for sure.
@@tinetannies4637 do not have hives yet but are you talking about bees heating the honey or the bee keeper. If the bee keeper why do you need to heat the honey.
@@tinetannies4637 ok. Thank you. I do not think Dr. Leo cooks his. All the videos he is in he eats it from the hive. But he uses no chemicals on his hives. So one more question why would you heat bee bread. Or are we actually talking about 🍞? I have heard the brood area called bee bread. But I might be wrong

I tried to be keep a couple of years ago, however the boxes were so heavy that I couldn't do it and my bees died so I gave up. But I just might try again with the vertical hive. Thank you for all the information I watched as many videos as I could find on on your UA-cam channel. Thank you so much for all the information I am learning so much from you and Stacy.
Thank you!! This was all very helpful information!!
I’m a newbie going into my second year with 2 hives established from local packages. I always appreciate the knowledge handed down from those more experienced because wow bees are so detailed it’s fascinating. Thank you so much!!
I’m going to try to set some swarm traps this year!!
WOW WOW WOW
The BEST, most interesting video of the YEAR !
BRAVO !
I just started bee keeping 4 days ago. Love it. This video has great info. Thank you. It's a bee-utiful day!!
Bee-utiful. Love that.
Good luck. It is all downhill from here. Just kidding. It is addictive, exciting, frustrating, happy, sad, and sometimes very expensive. But in the end it is totally worth it. It sure teaches you a different perspective of life!
Very good, thanks
I really enjoy listening to Dr Loe he is so knowledgeable.
Such a great video!!! As a new beekeeper, I appreciate the access to this information!
Just found this channel it is by far the most informative 43 mins on bee keeping, it is a beeutiful presentation will be following this channel as well as Dr.Leo and his plans for horizontal hives.
Thanks Dr. Leo, such helpful info. Appreciate this video Doug & Stacy.
I’m on 1 1/3 acres in Sonora California and am planning on starting a bee hive this spring. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for your videos and expert advice for people like me who haven’t a clue about starting up with bee keeping. Thank you. Paul Cruz.
this guy is bang on in my opinion - especially true if trying to raise bees in Canada - with our winters
It IS a bee-you-tiful day. Love this video and horizontalhive.com thank you so much for sharing!
It is a beeutiful day. Really enjoyed the video. Lots of great info. All makes so much sense to pull a hive from the area naturally where they already are thriving. good luck on the new hive. It's beeutiful
Wow, what a great video! So interesting, he has so much knowledge! Thank you so much for this extremely informative information! Have a great weekend!
Just picked up 2 hives last week, our first bees . Scrambling for advice thanks for the education.
It's a Bee🐝utiful day!
I'm excited to build a hive for our local bees!!
It is a bee-utifulday!!!! This was a great vid. Thank you for always sharing what you learn.
It is a beautiful day! I loved the video. I learned a lot. I plan on keeping bees the natural way and am studying as much as I can in order to prepare myself. I really like the concept of a horizontal hive.
Have wanted to get into bee keeping for years. This year I am finally going to start. I have read multiple books and watched tons of video. I am 100% behind the horizontal hive. Can't wait to see how I do. I work off shore in the Gulf of Mexico every 2 weeks. When I go home this time, I will be building and installing swarm hives while I build my first Layen's hive. I really appreciate all the info you and several other on line bee keepers share with us. I have learned so much from ya'll's videos. It is a joy to watch your videos.
Have a bee-utiful day.
Interesting...at 72 yrs. old I could use the horizontal hive.....It is a bee-utiful day!
love the video i am in Jamaica and i have been keeping bees for a year no and i lost 6 of my 8 hives that i started with and i now have 10 hives and all and of the new ones were local wild bees that i caught . i watch one of Dr Leos videos and i have been hooked and am all about the way he does his thing i will be making a few horizontal hives soon.
It’s a beeeautiful day!
Thanks for this video. Really enjoyed it!
it's a beautiful Day. Thank you for bringing him on.
Our pleasure!
As a teen back in the 80's , I took bee pollen everyday for my acne and helped with my ADD ( which wasn't really known back then), it helped me stay focused.
That is wonderful! That is great that you noticed it helped.
Wow! So much information! I live in a condo in New York City and will never have bees here (except for the bumbles in spring), but was fascinated by this video.
Bee hives on the roof, never say never!!
@@festorfamine Not allowed. It's not an apartment condo - it's townhouses, so our roofs are slanted. The board won't even let us hang bird feeders in our yards. Last year I had to pull up all of my ivy or be fined because they said rats could hide in it.
@@kathleensturgis8525 Sounds like you have a power mad board of directors. When I bought my house, I made sure it was not in a HOA area. Probably one of the best decisions I ever made.
Very helpful...THX Doug/Stacy
I really enjoy your channel. This is my first year beekeeping. I went with a top bar hive because I am in a wheelchair and didn't want to do the heavy lifting. I want to get a horizontal layens hive next year. Thank you to you and Dr. Leo for all of the information I love it.
I was thinking of making them a cave with tarp and nailing it to the ground?
Thank you from South Africa, was very informative indeed.
It IS a Bee-U-Tee-FULL day! What a GREAT, informative video. Hubby and I are just dipping our toes into beekeeping and we are also HUGE fans of open sourcing. We're all in this together :) Love watching and learning along with you!
Thanks, UA-cam. I didn’t know how much I needed to watch this. This is really cool.
On behalf of youtube your welcome lol
I think I need bees now. As I sit here in my urban neighborhood. Ha ha
Very interesting, I have wild swarms that use my hedges to rest in every single year. Now I know how to catch and keep them. Love your channel. Bee watching you, have a great day.
Yo can beat on the side of the box when ther swarming and they go in side it
Make you get the quine bee
How profitable is beekeeping ? I’m worried my dad won’t make enough from doing it
Can make more money with bees than cattle
OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY yea he has a tiiiiiny property though so it’s basically between a midget cow or a couple bee hives 😂
Just love you videos.. I am looking forward to keeping bees.. thank you for all the bee-autiful information...!!
It's a BEEutiful Day!! :)
Wow...awesome info...thanks to all!!
Great video thank you all for your time. Been wanting to do this helped me very much.
Wondering if Bee Bread is good for Allergies? From one UA-camr to another, I found this amazingly Interesting and Informative. Thanks. Want to try the ancient recipe for sure.
Yes! Local bee pollen helps your body reduce its allergic reaction to local flora.
Hi. Gosh this is interesting. Thank you for sharing. Blessings
I have been wanting to watch this for a long time. I'm glad I did. Thank you! GREAT INFO! Thanks!
