As always Rod, you dig great foundations and build upon them instead of just asserting points to make everything seem *safe* to please people. The bible doesn’t need making safe, it is it’s own doorman. It lets in those who do what it says.👍

Very clear. I remember reading 9 O'clock in the morning. Ask God for the gift, thank him, believe he's given it, open your mouth and start speaking in tongues. A slow start, but it developed. Strange but true. Great video.

    Blessed testimony Brother!
Yip - I was raised in a house of a professor in pharmacology - (my dad being a Prof.Dr.Dr. Andries van Zyl) - one of the most learned and renowned, here in South Africa) - in the top circles as Prof. Chris Barnard - famous heart surgent)
    - needless to say what intellectual challenges I faced when I got baptized in water and that night (June 1985) in the shower when I started to speak in tongues.
I didn't even know at that time exactly how to articulate all the wonderful graces received
    - but said to my family that Mrk.16:16-17 is happening in front of our very eyes and I could sense and realize the boldness coming forth when testifying about Jesus.
My brothers and parents reluctantly and puzzling asked me if my social, joyfully and drinking days are over now (with them) because I was the joker of the family and always silly about all matters of life - but found me all of a sudden more serious about things (as if they felt I had no more sense of humor - because I was so engaged suddenly with the word of God every night and day and not just leaving it all up to Sunday's church meetings
    - In any case - found that I was just too fanatical and making too much of the experience - it is just not normal and that I need to become balanced again!!!)
Also confronting me - why I am behaving so differently (immediately - no more cursing, smoking, or carrying on with reveling and selfish, idle and meaningless get-togethers and drinking parties, no more looking at rated movies, etc. nor below-the-belt jokes, etc.
    - but striving to live a life of virtue and to add to my faith all the gifts and benefits for an abundant entrance into God's everlasting kingdom and Lord Jesus Christ (Psa.1, 2 Pet.1:5-11)
    - where I acknowledge that I have discovered satisfaction in Christ (Psa.17:15) - fulfillment in Christ and am now walking on in the Lord rejoicingly (like the Ethiopian in the desert - after being baptized - Act.8:26-40)
    - then left engineering and went around from town to town ministering the Gospel of Christ and baptizing those who believed. Also experienced many miracles as I laid hands on the sick where we saw wonderful recoveries and healings.
Must say my parents were perplexed and always cautious because this was absolutely abnormal and very strange to anything our traditional churches ever preached and stood for
    - also felt it very strange that I would drop my professional career and future prospects to pursue a ministry (doing my own thing (so-called) - however, led by the Holy Spirit and living in faith.
    - and not part of their main line reformation/ traditional church/Calvinism manners of shunning the gifts of the Spirit). They called for the reverent to come and see me. He then wanted to place me under censorship after hearing that I got baptized and speaking in tongues, so I parted ways there and found pentecostal meetings of like precious faith believers to enjoy effective fellowship (Philemon 6).
My parents have now passed on, and my eldest brother and my youngest sister too - they never got baptized (my dad, on his deathbed, asked me not to nag anymore about his relationship with God
    - so I left that night mourning all the way back to my house
I have however heard that - just before he died that night - he apparently saw his death angel - sat up and said - "Sister, Sister come quick, I see a death angel coming to fetch me" - The sister replied - "Nonsense Professor, just lie back again and go to sleep" - a couple of hours later he passed on.
    - I always prayed and believed God for my house to also become converted and saved
    - cried a lot about their stubbornness and unbelief (not willing to yield to Act.2:38, Mrk.16:16, etc - to receive the implanted seed with meekness - to save our souls and for us all to become doers and not just hearers only -Js.1:21-22)
    - yet - still going on in the Lord and forever grateful that I have seen the light of redemption and salvation leaving such delicate (close to home) cases (as well up to Him) - that is to trust my Lord to judge those outside the body.
Everyone will have to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling
and thus stand responsible for our own lives in front of that great judgment seat
I eagerly exhort folk around the world not to neglect spiritual gifts but to pursue them - for these are for our edification and strength and work through the same Spirit for the glory of God (but to also discern accurately in all the hundreds of different denominations of today whether a prophecy or word is according to the truth - via the Holy Spirit)
    - For me thus to follow the steps of Jesus Christ to love (love rejoices in truth - 1 Cor.13) and always to remain willing to minister in every circumstance and place through the Spirit of God - where so ever we find ourselves - desiring for everyone to be saved (Rom.1:15) - Amen!

AMEN! In my experience I received a powerful outpouring of the Spirit the moment I was saved. I began singing and speaking in tongues very fluently, and the next morning I stayed in my dorm room for four hours praying in tongues. I was so encouraged when I finally read Acts 10 and saw that the believers in Cornelius' household had a similar experience. What a blessing it was to get saved in the mid-70s, when a Charismatic revival was sweeping through the churches in North Carolina (to the chagrin of many of their leaders). Thanks for following up on your last video on this topic.

Thanks for your testimony, I likewise had a remarkable conversion, being baptized with the Spirit in the solitude of my bedroom. The Spirit fell on me, and filled me so much I thought that I would burst unless I gave vent to what had built up inside my belly. Then I opened my mouth, my heart was filled with praise to God, but what came out was stammering lips, see Isaiah 28. The room filled with smoke, and I fell on my knees, being full of praise to God. Some days later, I was praising God, and lo and behold, the Spirit fell on me again, I began to speak with tongues, and could no longer, stand on my feet as the weight of the glory forced me downward until I was prostrate on the floor. For about forty-five minutes I was in that position, not knowing whether I wanted the Lord to turn it up, or to turn it off, because I didn't know how much more I could bear.
I believe it good to testify of the things that God has done for us. Sometimes we compare notes and learn from each other.
Be blessed and be a blessing.

Great video, great explanations and very similar to my own experience. Wondering what was happening and then fully expressing the tongues. I live in Zambia, a country in Africa. Here pemtecostalism or charismatic churches are quite the norm. Though Baptist, Anglican, Adventist and Catholic churches are the standard in a sense. Non Holy Ghost experiences. I grew up in the Catholic church and always desired more of God.
I ridiculed televangelists like Benny Hinn and people "falling" seeing it as cheap tricks until in my 2md year of university I "fell" and experienced the baptism i. The Holy Ghost. I would experience tongues or the desore to do so especially when in worship or the choir was singing songs of worship.
Now 12 years later its all very natural to me. Thanks Rod for being a great defender of the Faith and standing up for The Word of Faith. Keep up the good work. Always enjoy your videos. God bless you.

Well this one was completely enjoyable and I think you did an awesome job explaining it! If I may be so bold, I think to help from who are on the edge The vital also clearly states that the spirit raised out of our groanings which means we ain't got the words when we are in so much turmoil and pain and we know we need to pray that we hang out the slightest idea of what we are supposed to pray The Holy Spirit will be the praying for us and I believe that that's part of speaking in tongues. I might not have full knowledge of everything that I'm praying about when I pray in the spirit but I know that there's a difference but sometimes I might be crying and not understanding why other times I ache , there are other times I had to laugh there are times where my speech is strong and demanding so I think this is how we send the host of angels out and how we combat some things that we just don't realize or even going on around us Sir you did a really good teaching and I appreciate it

Thanks R9b though I actually think that baptism in the spirit best describe getting saved. I think the better term to describe the other experience has brings the empowerment is receiving the Holy spirit. I think the early Church got born again and received the Holy spirit in the upper room in acts 2. I don't think that the John 20:22 account where Jesus breathe on the disciples does not necessarily mean they got born again through that. I know that is a very popular view but I am not convinced that view is accurate.

    • @danmarley2886
      @danmarley2886 3 роки тому

There are many aspects of salvation, for instance Like 7:47-50 reveals the forgiveness of sin is salvation. And be mindful of the fact that the old testament was still in force when Jesus told the woman her sins were forgoven and her faith had saved her.
She was saved as well as the disciples before the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
In Romans 10:8-10 we see that our righteousness or justification is salvation.
Hebrews 10:39 shows that the saving of the soul is also salvation. 2Peter 3:15 is salvation.
These are a testament to the manifold grace of God.
What about sanctification, preservation, resurrection, glorification and adoption, redemption and translation? You be the judge.
The new birth is the results of the process of perfect sanctification or holiness, being born of water and the Spirit.
Titus 3:6 says By his mercy he has saved us by the washing of regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Ghost.
It is the putting off of the old man and the putting on of the new man which is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the experimental new birth not positional. Paul prayed for the Galatians and the Ephesians that Christ might be formed in them. He also said in Galatians that I'm crucified with Christ nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me... Grace and Peace!

Hey Rod, this is an interesting one.
Mike Winger is going to use his point to then deny the event of baptism in the spirit.
Now I have been a tongues talking, prophesying pentecostal since 1981, most of that time in an AOG church here down under.
But Mike is correct with this account of the group in Ephassis.
Think about it logically, these folk were followers of John T Baptist. Johns ministry was before the appearance of Jesus. John taught repentance of backslidden Israel, to make straight the path of the coming Messiah, which Israel expected!!! This was a Jew baptizing Jews for a very Jewish future outlook. "He (Jesus) came to his own (Israel) but they recieved him not."
Christians were unknown at Johns baptizing, and this was about purifying themselves in repentance for bad stuff they had done going back to King David.
Christians were unknown until after Jesus was crucified and Peter said (again to Jews) in Acts2, "this man you have crucified has been raised and MADE LORD AND CHRIST."
You see? After that many believed and followed the christ,... i.e. became christians. "Got saved."
So this group, and they admitted it there in scripture, knew nothing of this new Lord and teaching about the body of christ!! They were a bunch of true hearted Jews waiting for their Messiah, they had moved to Ephasis from the Jordan river where they had met John T Baptist.
So now they "got saved" and spoke in tongues right there, just like Cornelious's family! They became christians right there, and became the church in Ephasis that Paul later writes to.
So technically Mike Winger is correct in his technical point. This piece of scripture is erronously taught in penticostal churches as an example of baptism in holy spirit to christians who "havent had it yet" , it was taught to me like that back in 1981 where I accepted it, because the Pastor told me (and he is a man of God!!!) . I since learned of the issue when I began studying this seriously in 2017 when challenged to explain tongues, by a baptist lady.
Its just plain logical. There were no christians prior to the death and resurection of Jesus, just a bunch of jewish disciples and a lot of folk looking on, most not believing that he was their Messiah!
Oh, and tongues, interpretation, discernment, prophecy etc are not separate power gifts either, they are as Paul says in 1cor12 "Manifestations" of the gift, which gift actually is holy spirit. All believers are filled at conversion, the power gifts are listed later in chapter, apostles pastors prophets etc. Special ministry gifts. The rest of us normal folk have direct connection to the Lord Jesus through that indwelling spirit we are all sealed with, so can manifest what ever aspect is needed in a situation, as a member of Jesus body. Like he is there in us.
Thats what being a member of the body is all about!
If folk dont believe me go get a Koine Greek interlinear and an old copy of KJV which has italics for words which are not in the original greek, and see how many of those "gift" words fade away. Church speak has clouded Pauls straight forward writing!!
Its all about a typical church meeting in ch12 and how spirit manifests in ALL the believers present, and them doing that in order, not in chaos as the Corinthians were doing.
I guess folk will rant at me, but hey, wouldnt it be empowering if we all accepted and expected to do all these manifestation things instead of the current hide and seek game of who has a gift or not? Now in my old church none of it happens now anyway, and someone speaking in tongues gets a glare or told to stop, which is why I aint there any more. So I am with you Rod in encouraging this, its just the old church speak which distorts the truth.

    • @JewandGreek
      @JewandGreek  3 роки тому

First of all, they were referred to as disciples, which usually suggests followers of Jesus. It doesn't say that they didn't know about Jesus. It says that they didn't know about the Holy Spirit. But whether they were already believers in Jesus or not, they certainly were by the time Paul baptized them. Now according to credo-baptism proponents, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you once you believe in Jesus and are born again, and after that you follow the Lord in water baptism. So we have to conclude that these disciples were already indwelt by the Spirit prior to their baptism and prior to Paul laying hands on them to receive the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues. So whether or not they were already believers, their experience was still a subsequent experience to regeneration and it was accompanied by tongues. So no, Winger wasn't right. @@JewandGreek come on Rod, who is Exegeting what here. you make a wierd case with strange logic.
Ch19 we see Paul first encountering some devout believers in a Gentile nation and in v8 we see he went with them into their synagogue.
      INTO WHAT? SYNAGOGUE!
i.e. they were Jews, believers in YHWY, living in a pagan nation.
(These once saved are the first guys who make up the church in Ephesis who Paul a couple decades later writes to in the letter to the Ehesians)
inActs19: v2 we see they have never heard of a spiritual awakening or conversion (christianity, believing on risen Christ, because when they left John at the Jorden Jesus had not yet showed up, certainly not died and risen) and we read in v3 they admit to being baptized into Johns baptizm and v4 Paul says "john baptized repentance and belief in the one to come (see, they are jewish believers, repented from Israels backsliden condition) and so who were the Jews expecting to come? Their messiah! Not someone saving all the nations by his death, but a ruling king to restore Israel. Believers! Believing in YHWY.
v5 we see they believe Pauls testimony (of what happened in their absence) and are baptized into Jesus. i.e. become followers of the risen Christ. That means become christians, saved, converted!
Then "hey what!" they speak in tongues like Cornelious's lot did with Peter.
So they spoke in tongues and prophesied upon conversion! My point and inadvertently also Mike Wingers.
The difference is Mike wants to down play manifestations like tongues and prophecy, because he doesnt understand any of that, he is a book man (and probably only the english version) while I am keen to show believers that this manifesting the spirit within, is something all believers are capable of doing, and should be doing, as Paul explains in 1Cor12 (as long as they do it in orderly fashion) as it is not a matter of who does or doesnt get certain "gifts" but whether they use their will to allow the spirit within to manifest in one of the nine ways listed, when needed.(not because they dont have a particular gift, thats bad translation exegesis makes folk think that)
Most dont, or say they cant because they dont want to, they do not exercise their free will to want to, due to things like fear and pride.
Instead they use their will to deny or misconstrue what Paul clearly teaches.
I say, as Paul does, " I would that you ALL spoke in tongues, however it would be better to prophecy." (because then all the body understands the words and is built up by what the spirit says)
Reiterating, the ephesis believers are Jews who want their Messiah, they hear the fuller story, believe in YHWY's plan of the risen christ, the lamb of sacrifice, and are miraculously changed into that "new creation neither jew nor gentile" that Paul later writes to them about to clarify.

You’re the first public figure I’ve seen who is a strong apologist for Pentecostalism. I actually appreciate that because through you people who are willing can understand what it really is, what it is not, and what it should not be.
On your video, the thing is, I don’t think a lot of your subtle swipe at people not wanting to speak in tongues is fair or necessary or even true. I’ve seen people who neither understood nor wanted it get the gift.
Then, context does matter. I’m glad you know that. But probably even more so as it relates to the difference between descriptives and didactics in scripture. Some groups of Christians have the habit of muddying the waters between the two to establish without reasonable doubt - rather than humbly discuss, for a start - doctrines scripture never establishes, especially with tongues.
The fundamental premise of interacting with the Bible at all is to read it how the writers intended for it to be read. I’m only saying this because you leap in and out of unconnected verses - books even - of the Bible and fit them together to preach one thing that was rather read into a text. It should be the other way around - scripture prescribing and producing doctrine not doctrine beaten to fit scripture, as you have instead accused others of doing.
I wish the majority of the people in your comments would interact intellectually with your posts. I’d love to see you with Mike Winger together discuss this rather than draw the conversation to your corner and tear it down, so that people can see that it’s not all clear cut as you’re making it out to be.

1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

There's no direct connection between our spirit and our soul and body (John 3:6). Therefore, what goes on in our soul and body does not affect the state of our spirit.
Our spirit is one with the Spirit of God (1 Cor 6:17). And God does not sleep (Psalm 121:3-4).

I have had a disagreement with Rod on this very point.
The promise of the Spirit was from the Father, and given by Jesus. Jesus mentioned that all that were thirsty could come to him and drink, speaking of the Spirit, and to be given after he was glorified.
In the gospel of John, Jesus said, If I go not away, the comforter will not come, speaking of the Spirit. It was only after Jesus was seated with the Father that he sent the Spirit
So the disciples could not have received the Spirit at the moment that Jesus breathed on them, because Jesus had not gone away, and neither had he been glorified with the glory he had from the beginning.
It is problematic for the church to believe that one could be saved and not have the Spirit. Yet in Acts 8, those that believed the preaching of Phillip in Samaria, were baptized in water only, as clearly stated. But the apostles at Jerusalem heard of their conversion, and traveled to Samaria, and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost.
Moreover, when Paul encountered certain disciples, he askea, Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed? Why would an apostle of God ask such a question if we all automatically were baptized with the Holy Ghost. Following that he prayed for, and laid hands on them, then they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
So, one can be saved and not be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
Those disciples in John 20, did not receive the baptism with the Holy Ghost until the day of Pentecost, after being told by Jesus himself, to tarry at Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the from the Father. By which baptism we are all made to drink into one Spirit.
Nowhere can I find that Christians receive the Spirit twice.
Be blessed and be a blessing.
