My prof (with PhD) stationed in Middle East, used to get paid $600k /yr plus Benefits before his retirement from Shell. He than came back to US and started academic carrier.

Yes and in Norway you pay at least 50% tax so you're best working in a tax free country.
Saudi and the other GCC countries aren't on the list because I guess, that the low value for their currencies and the relatively lower average income in these countries compared to the USD is the main reason.
In other words, life in Saudi is much cheaper and easier than the US, so let's say 40,000 USD in the US is considered I believe a below average income, but in Saudi, this amount of money is relatively high income and the one with this salary can have a really good life quality.

i believe that the salary of petroleum engrs are too high. but the main thing is only 2% petroleum engrs successfully got job in this field. i have finished bachelors of petroleum engineering with a good CGPA but still i could not get any response. not only me all of my class fellows and seniors suffering from the same condition. pls dont make people fool. try to do something other than petroleum. thanks

Is it a difficult career to learn? Because I want to become an engineer someday, but I'm having trouble choosing what type of engineer I want to be.
All of the engineerings are hard , so petroleum is it too, but u should investigate the work enviroment and work fields of each engineering so that you choose what u like most. For example, petroleum engineerings commonly work in places very isolated, like offshore rigs, rigs in the middle of nowhere, working 12 hours shifts, away from home. They also do office work but in a lesser extent.
