An engineer uses science, technology and math to solve problems. We can see engineering everywhere in the world around us, improving the ways we work, travel, communicate, stay healthy, and entertain. Petroleum engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. A petroleum engineer is someone who locates reservoirs of natural gas and crude oil beneath the earth's surface, and then determines if the effort of extracting the product will be worth the time and money for the company he/she works for. After the decision has been made to drill, it is the job of the petroleum engineer to find the best and most cost efficient way to extract the product. Basically, petroleum engineers are concerned with four main areas: finding oil, evaluating whether it has potential, recovering the oil, and transporting/storing it.

Sir, I am from India. I got the bachelors degree in geology and I am planning to do masters in Petroleum Engineering in abroad.
Where do you suggest me to do the masters i.e,, Norway or USA. Is there any special advantage of getting a certificate from Europe so that I can get a job easily. I am struck with deciding where to study the masters at , because of mixed opinions about Oil and Gas industry. What is the scope for jobs in Europe or USA if I did the masters in abroad. It would be so much helpful for me if you can give your opinion sir, Thank You.
It all depends on where you want to live..both options are good. The advantage with USA is that you wouldn't have to learn the language like in Norway. If you can't speak Norwegian chances are a bit less to get job. Even if you get job the daily life would be difficult due to language barriers.

Sir im about to finish civil engineering and i would love to get in into oil and gas industry as drilling engineer . Is it possible? If yes what am i supposed to do after C.E. Btw i love to work in Norway, so it would be really helpful if you could tell me how does that work.
Hi Diljith, it's not straight forward from civil engineering to drilling, but if you could do Master's or so in drilling, reservoir physics, geology, welling or anything related will make you more confident and attractive to drilling companies 👍

I would recommend you one of these three:
For Masters: Instrumentation, Automation or Technical Safety. With Masters in of these you are guaranteed a job even outside petroleum field .
What is the working profile of an engineer at rig ?
“I heard that they had to work only 6months in a year “is that true?
It depands where you are in the world. As an example in Norwegian continental Shelf you work 2 weeks and have 4 weeks free. In Brazil they have 28 days on and 28 days of.. I have never heard of 6 months duty on the rig. It is not recommended to work so long for health safety reasons.

Best to take whole degree abroad instead of just Masters. Would be much easier to get job and perhaps sponsor for masters degree as well.

I would say, most probably yes.. It requires 90% hard work and 10% luck in form of Oil and gas prices and energy demand at the time when you are finished with your studies.

There are two main options if you want to work abroad: 1.have a diploma from abroad, like do your masters or PHD abroad.

F. ex. your plans after finishing Masters. Do you want to stay in that country or move back? Do you prefer English speaking country? Cheap or expensive study? Any country preference? I took my whole education in Norway. I am sure many countries have good petrolieum engineering program but you should study in the country where you want work and live for many years. It will be easier to get job in that country if you have taken your education there..

@@DesiLifestyle as a student, there are two streams in the petroleum engineering subject, the first one is upstream and the other one is gas stream (as of what it is called in our college)

the degree name is Applied Petroleum Engineering with specialization in Gas Stream.
Ok, this is about the gas streams produced during petroleum recovery, petroleum refining, and natural gas processing, stabilising for export in pipelines.

There are many many.. .. Both national and international.
I don't have any exact number but most of international petroleum companies have offices in India as well in addition to Indian companies. Some examples are many branches of Subsea, dolphin offshore, IGOPL, Sadhaf, Arya offshore services, Total, BP, Asker solutions etc..

Yes, they are one of the main facility engineers. Courses that are relevant: fluid dynamics, system response and control, stress analysis, mechanics of machines, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, material, valve, rotating machines erc..

I don't think the industry will shut down completely in few decades, but it may stop looking for new oil fields. All this depands on many thing...

Hi Umarul Farook, My best advise for you is to get a Masters while you are searching for the job, or better is to contact the petroleum companies and ask them if you can do a problem solving Master thesis for their company and they can sponsor that. After ending your Masters you will be hired most probably by that company.

Good question Kartik, there are many different types of oil rigs, short me explain karon to floating and non floating platforms. Navy engineers may with their expertise get job in floating platforms or FPSOs in the maritime sector.
