This hospitality is so rare here in the west, that if someone in London offered me a free ride if think I was gonna be robbed. Sad but true, and the media paints these countries as dangerous, full of "scary" bearded people, how ignorant we are to lap it up blindly.

I spent almost my whole life in Germany. I got the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia, a country, that sounds strange and dangerous for Europeans, mostly because all we know is from media. When I arrived in Saudi, it was (as expected) a different world. But it was a world that fell in love with within a couple of days. So many nice and polite people. So much Respekt, I was welcomed by every single person. I came to the conclusion that the beauty of a country depends significantly on the people. I am still in Saudi and I still love this country like the first day.

@@kostinann Since there is no Christian church there, I cannot pray, but since I don’t give a dime on praying, since religion is on the bottom part of my list, I don’t care. As a photographer, I've spent quite a bit of time in Riyadh over the last year and a half, and I can tell you, literally everyone I've met or worked with has been extremely cordial and friendly. As you correctly point out, there's a HUGE difference between the people on the ground in Saudi Arabia and it's political challenges and aspirations.

@@ajs41 -- A good question. I generally stay at the Courtyard Diplomatic Quarter, and I've seen plenty of women business travelers there, several who seemed to be traveling alone. That said, they're likely not visiting the more depressed areas; more likely working with contacts in the government, or with Aramco. And that isn't substantially different than working with business people anywhere else, at least since MBS started making changes in women's rights there.

I’m in Saudi right now for work. It’s been amazing seeing the new levels of freedom, economic growth and development that SO strongly contrast my experiences here 9 years ago. The sense of relief is palpable. The Saudis have always treated me well but now there is an unreserved openness and friendliness that reminds me of Egypt. I hope good things for the people of Saudi, and pray that as they explore new avenues of freedom that it doesn’t just turn into new burdens brought on by the same moral pitfalls we suffer from in the west. Enjoy these new paths, KSA, but do so, wisely.

The one correction I'll make about something Mohammad said is the head scarfs (Hijabs). I moved there in 2000 and never wore a Hijab unless I was having a bad hair day. I know there were different rules for Saudis vs. expats, but yeah, the only times that the religious police would attempt to tell us to cover our hair was during Ramadan. But headscarfs aren't really a legal term thing, it's religious, and I barely ever wore it out. So it's not something that became legal two years prior to your video being posted.

Like having sex with your own sister, having sex with animals, homosexuality, and more of these disgusting things are freedom in your eyes. But it’s madness in our eyes. We DONT want it. You can’t force your taste upon us. Talking about animal, go clean your own mess first, people are starving in USA. They kill each other for 1 gram cocaine. Look at the crime statistics, you would almost think the USA is a war zone. You guys think letting your sister or wife walk half naked is freedom, well, we don’t share this opinion. it's quite similar to dubai in many ways. they funnel their oil money into projects like this, and modernize in regards to social customs and PR, in the hope that when the oil runs out and the world transitions away from fossil fuels they can sustain themselves via being a business/trade hub. i don't think it will work out in the long term (see: neom - absolutely delusional colossal waste of money, consultants laughing all the way to the bank) but you can't fault them for trying. and while i haven't been to saudi, I have been to dubai, and in terms of architectural grandeur and the friendliness and politeness of the people, it really is beautiful in its own way. but the ugliness is still there, just buried in the sand.

He is turning desserts into greenland by using new technology. His ancestors build the country but this guy revolutionized the country. He allowed women to drive vehicles. I lived in Saudi (Jeddah) and I gotta say I'm not a fan. I had great times but that was mainly due to the western compound I was in (called Saudia City, where employees of the airlines lived). Americans and Euros mainly and because of the local ways we bonded in an 'us against the world' kind of way. The humidity was horrendous. First time I walked out of the airport it was like a strong sauna. On day one my father's friend picked us up at the airport. On the way home he stopped and bought a goat, and threw it in the truck. The whole way to the house he was kicking and screaming in the trunk. When we arrived, he rushed to grab it, threw it on the ground and started chopping it's legs off right in front of us. He could have easily waited 60 seconds for us to walk in the house but he wanted us to see it. That brought him joy. Of course I was forced to eat it later and it was the nastiest meat I've ever had. Not even seasoned, tough, etc. Everywhere you go people honk horns on the roads for no reason. 'Prayer time' shutting down shops many times a day, which is fine on its own but they have to BLAST that prayer call for 20 minutes a time on loudspeakers EVERYWHERE so there's no escaping it. Streets were dirty, lots of traffic. Where ever you go people shamelessly STARE at you like their life depended on it. If you stare back with giant eyes to try to get them to stop it won't change a thing, their expression won't even change, like they were watching tv or something. Surprising amount of men were aggressively gay. The first guy here that gave you a ride gave me strong Saudi gay vibes, and considering you never showed how you guys parted makes me think he probably hit on you. The 2nd Mohammed was super cool though. They had two types of cop cars. The blue and white was for crime only. The green and white were for traffic. Super weird. They did have an excellent chicken chain called Al Baik, hope you got to check that out. It comes with a white dipping sauce that was pretty amazing. The best memories was how we'd ride our dirtbikes out in the desert everyday after school. Amazing desert for motocross. But as far as the country, hard pass for me. I didn't like the culture and I rarely met awesome people.

@@On_The_Piss . Women who want to write a thesis about women in the middle east, leave with a different idea and then return with a different tune. Why??? Simple Q? A woman keeps crying loudly inside an elevator or park and nobody comes to save her until she is raped and only the surrounding public comes with stories the next day, we heard her cries, we heard her cries but never dared to go or dial 911, in the meantime the goon tells, "see you have cried three times and nobody came, if you cry once more, I am going to slit off your throat and you know what would have happened after that? I have read thousands of such news. I was riding a bus overseas in Pakistan when I heard a commotion in the next seats. One lady yelled at some goon for his inappropriate remarks and 10 guys stood up asking."Sister, you got some problem due to this guy?" and that goon slipped away in the meantime as he knew she had got help. Now in which situation woman should feel safe when she just raises her voice and ten men come to her help taking her as their own daughter, sister or mother, or when a girl keeps crying at night inside elevator or park or keeps banging door until she is ready to get raped? Draw your own conclusion. Peace!!

well I can see what you mean by the the fact he can say he have a girl friend noy just that many times its acceptable. but like going to hotel with her is the cultural unacceptable. thing but in hotels not like in the past they won't ask who is this woman and about tattoos I have seen many people with tattoos even before change come they used to be stopped by relegion police as they say and they don't take them in for that they just tell them is wrong and they leave them about being forced to pray its not true they just tell people to go pray I do not agree with alot of things they used to do but like bro it wasn't as bad as they say I don't like taking people rights and lie

I only spent 16yrs in Saudi on the east coast with Aramco. I would like to think I still have some Saudi friends albeit leaving in 2016. Great people, very hospitable and with buying my motorcycles there, had wonderful tours and experiences with everyone.
Having a multiple visa, it was possible to ride to all the GCC countries, plus Jordan.
Visited a few times Riyadh but, never experienced the west coast and the Red Sea.

After living abroad (China) for ten years and traveling around the country a lot what I learned is how kind people are. Returning home to Sweden have been great but also a big reverse cultural shock. China is by far the safest country I have ever been to. I hope I can adjust being home. But I’m having thoughts of working abroad again.
