Yes but also it seems like many architecture professors do actually love modern architecture than traditional ones. I do get why though. Modern architecture is functional even though it doesn't focus on beauty and like you said, it's easier and cheaper to build them. You don't want to spend days designing the details of a column or carvings in wood when you're likely not being paid that much extra for it. And it's not like most people can afford to pay extra to people who are skilled in making designs in wood or columns or stone either.

hi ! i mostly agree with all of the above but i do think that the working situations of the workers was a bit different from that of a slave or pesants. The level of skils required to be stone carver, glass maker and blaksmith causes the creation of a working class of itinerant craftsman, going from worksite to worksite. Some sources says they earn almost a third of the salary as an architect (witch is not good but surprisigly low for our representation of social inequalities in such anciant time). To conclude, i would like to emphasis the libert and cretivity of those workers: many detail were of their own merits and their dedication and association may be part of a sort of "working class pride " if we try to see something inspiring in those old stuff :)

For most of those renaissance guys, drawing and sculpting was the real shit and painting was the bill payer. Michelangelo didn't even want to do the ceiling at first, until he was ordered to do it. Imo painting really started popping off with Rembrandt and Caravaggio later on. Both the techniques and the actual material of the paint got better by then

    • @hojosconsal9913
      @hojosconsal9913 Рік тому +11

@@MarcHendry I mean, religious paintings were their standard bill payers, but they were crucial as a way to show your ability and what you could accomplish in a time where the main crafts were deeply studied, and painting specifically was also transforming into something of its own, collectively. Even though what we know as a painting kind of took off around the renaissance, there were a lot of instances were very "modern" things happened, even earlier than the gothic period, although made by less mainstream names like Caravaggio and company decades and centuries later.
What I really meant to say is that art history is vast and rich. Sadly for a lot of people Da Vinci, Miguel Angelo and Rafael ARE the renaissance art, but it is so much more than than. Paintings and everything else.

also these people are always hilariously wrong about how these movements. Van Gogh being classic fine art is the funniest joke ever. that man didn't have a successful art career, and if he was before Monet's time his art would have been hated so much. what about really classical looking art, like Rembrandt? literally had his career shattered and went broke because he painted a client in realistic lighting. and the contemporary examples these accounts show are never even accurate depictions of what contemporary art is actually like (we wouldn't even have a finalized representation of the era yet because WE ARE IN THE ERA RIGHT NOW).

As someone studying architecture rn and is also getting more and more political what seems like every day, this comment resonates with me.
Also, I kinda feel like the lack of art/architecture literacy is what makes people shun modern art and architecture. I might be wrong but as someone who once considered me liking modern art/architecture more as an exception than a rule but likes them now for one reason or another, I feel like my experience would be echoed by many more. Yes, traditional art and architecture look absolutely beautiful but if you look at the history and the context of why a art/architecture style or movement started, you begin to love or at least, appreciate modern art/architecture too imo. Also afaik, almost every one of them was a reaction against a previously loved style of art/architecture so you know, there were people then that clearly didn't like art/architecture that we now consider to be greatest things ever produced by mankind.
in the end, while I understand why people like traditional art/architecture and hate modern art/architecture and would not consider them to have fascistic ideologies by just that one aspect, saying something like modern art/architecture = degeneracy is just so weird and _that_ part makes me wonder if they actually do have fascistic ideologies.

The majority of the artists who made those works weren't making art in their spare time between the two jobs they had to work to make rent, they had housing and other expenses paid for by their patrons, who also usually paid them in advance for their works, and sometimes had a little something going on on the side with those same patrons, if you catch my meaning. this is what most people complain about modern art not some "fascist" thing, it just doesn't have passion and love involved, having a phd doesn't make no one a better artist, these guys like DaVinci, Michelangelo all took years, maybe decades to master their craft, and also modern "artists" also have all time of the world to improve their art but they simply don't, and why should they, they can sell a soulless painting that even a 6 year old can make by 5-10 million to rich people that think they "understand" art and are "deep thinkers", and all these legendary artists back then didn't had much cultures to get inspired from, they literally had to do everything from scrap, and now that we have internet and access to nearly all cultures of the world, you would be thinking art would only grow better than that, but that isn't the truth, and a masterpiece takes years to be made, ofcourse, perfection comes with time, making an art in 4 hours is simply impossible

It's closer to chemistry, spending YEARS formulating paints, learning the fundamentals, abstraction... most contemporary artists CAN and DO draw beautiful figures but find more power, meaning, and beauty in exploring the depths and power of the medium they use. Cartoonists spend DECADES developing a marketable style. It's not as easy as slapping paint down and shitting on it and selling it for a million dollars.

But there was something abt the caption that felt kinda off to me, so I went to the page and one of the top videos was talking abt nationalism and how it’s healthy and I was like “oh yikes, I completely ended up on the wrong side of tiktok”
It’s like you said abt how they fail to identify capitalism at the root of shitty housing. I saw that tiktok and thought it must be from the perspective of hating the kind of guilt capitalism forces on us for buying things and having “clutter”. A thought about modern art:
I've said similar things about modern art (it sucks, looks like an accident, etc etc) not because I hate *all* modern art or think that it's "not art" or lesser than other forms, but rather because of the elitism in the art world where any piece of art can be worth millions of dollars or found to be "profound" just bc it has a famous artist's name on it or bc fancy art ppl were told they were supposed to like it. A lot of modern art is apreciated not bc ppl actually like it, but bc they think that convincing themselve's that it's good means that they are more intellectual or whatever. It's gross elitism like that, that leads pieces of art that most ppl don't like to be propped up, so obv ppl are gonna make fun of "modern art", and unfortunately fascists are gonna use that as an opportunity to be like "SEE? THIS IS WHY WE NEED TRADITIONALISM". Whats ironic is that those fascists are also being very elitist about art, just in a different way.
Anyways, just wanted to point that out as someone who's both somewhat familiar with the snobby art ppl who love modern art, and also hates the fascist critique of modern art. I don't why ppl never bring this up when talking about fascist critiques of modern art, it seems relevant to me.
Loved Ethan's dissecting of this though, thourough and entertaining.

also on the flip side: there is modern art that has very deep meaning and is very cool, but it is never brought up by these "traditional" art accounts because then they'd have to admit that some modern art is good. it's like art from any period I guess, the ones that stand the test of time will probably be the best (or luckiest) artworks, the ones that aren't very good from other periods have faded into history so we can't see them.

Combine that with how it was absolutely panned as being heresy against art when it came out, only to be recognized as a valuable commodity once he was respected for his name (mostly after his death) rather than for it's critiques of the incestuous "high art" market and the comparison to the David statue, which was a commission, as being some sort of "true" art shows this guy's cards. Taking some of the talking points that philosophers made before the French revolution that drove the neoclassical movement, not that people that were fucking starving also read Rousseau but the political figures that took credit did, and misinterpreting them as Christian ethics and neo-nazy tales of manly greatness. Also, some of the art that is acclaimed at museums today is just a clever way of money laundering and to bring into the mainstream some ideas that seem progressive but reductive enough not to cause any revolt or change in the paradigm.

5:05 I love that it says "what uneducated peasants built during dark ages" and on the bottom left is the Hungarian Parliament built between 1885-1904 and the architect was Imre Steindl, teacher at the Budapest Technical University from 1869.
And on the left top there is the Florence Cathedral, which, yes, they started at 1296, but those white building parts are a modern façade built in the 19th century designed by Emilio De Fabris.
(The top right is the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building of the University of Technology Sydney (2012)
Bottom right is the Robarts Library (1973) in Toronto)

The topic of modern art and modern fascism is so interesting to me, especially as a queer artist. I personally think it's one of the best gages for a person's views (looking at you Concept Art instructor that docked me marks for "not using enough red to symbolize fear" + my more cartoony style)
Jacob Geller has another great video on this topic and it's one of my favourites to discuss (Who's Afraid of Modern Art)

That Jacob Geller vid and the Philosophy Tube vid on 'Is Art Meaningless' really turned me around on modern art, honestly - I used to be in the 'a five year old could do that' camp, and now I actively seek out Rothko exhibitions to experience them for myself - not gotten to see one yet because the local Tate is being stingy, but I'm keeping an eye out. There's still a lot of modern art I don't vibe with, but my mind's definitely more open to it

I know it's not about this, but do these lads know they can prefer a certain style over another without putting the other down? I also prefer the aesthetic of gothic cathedrals to some modern buildings, but both are valid and I'm not gonna shit on modern architecture. :/

    crazy artist rant incoming:
one of my main problems with these accounts is that i get them confused with other accounts that just genuinely post ye olden pretty art that they want to share with the world. i love admiring sculptures and architecture and its always so disappointing for me when i see their accounts :( also 5:00 that urinal was the start of the dadaism artistic movement, it in itself doesnt say anything but the story and people behind it give it a lot of value to art history and as someone who loves dadaism, its one of my favorite pieces. i highly recommend people looking up the meaning behind it, and also The Canvas has some great dadaism videos.
also sorry but 5:32 van gogh didnt kill himself, contrary to popular belief. this isnt some crazy conspiracy theory, its just that a 16yo that was bullying him who liked cowboys too much got pissed at him and shot him, he told everyone he did it to himself so he wouldnt ruin this 16yos life. if you look at the medical records, evidence, eye witness accounts from the family he lived with, half written letters, his extreme disgust for self harm, and a fuck ton of other things: there is no possible way he actually did it to himself. sorry for info dumping

14:25 Maurizio Cattelan (the man behind "comedian" AKA the banana man) actually doesn't hold any degrees which makes that post even funnier.
I love when people refuse to think, Cattelan literally told the galleries that display the bananas to replace them with normal bananas once they start to rot. Reading about his process is fascinating

Preserving fire? Uh oh. Someone didn't realize Dark Souls was a story about systemic cycles of violence and oppression.
