What Happened To The Found Footage Genre?

  • Throughout the many phases of horror movies, one of the most popular was certainly the found-footage era. After the late 90s and into the late 2010s, it seemed that most horror movies in the theaters and on Netflix all incorporated the found-footage style of filmmaking. And like most popular things, found-footage became so popular that it overstayed its welcome, and today it’s all but entirely dead.

Chronicle did a good job at portraying what kids would do with superpowers.
The normal kid being the hero, who wanted there to be limits on their powers
The popular kid being the anti hero, who wanted to use them to have fun
And the introvert the villain, who used them to take out his anger because he had a horrible life

Found footage horror movies really had a way of making you, the audience, feel like you're really inside the film yourself. The shaky movement of the camera, the hidden footage that cameras don't pick up really add on to the angst of horror films

I think an honourable mention should go to 'Man Bites Dog', a Belgian 'found footage' film that pre-dates Blair Witch by several years. It didn't have the commercial success or recognition of many of the films you mention here, and isn't strictly a horror movie, although it is probably the most horrifying and disturbing movie I've seen. And unlike most films in the genre, the 'monster' is always on screen, right there in front of you, making jokes and sharing his thoughts on philosophy, culture and the science of ensuring dead bodies don't float when you dump them in the river.
It was banned in Sweden, and some scenes were heavily edited or cut entirely for its US release, so I'd recommend getting hold of an original copy if you can...or not, as it's really not an easy watch.

I remember renting this movie with friends, at some horror/fantasy store, back in the late 90s... I only watched it once and I remember it going from dark humour to absolute nightmare. I think it scarred me for life.

Another movie that's genre stemmed from this found footage genre was Host (2020). Instead of being found footage horror, it's horror among friends during a skype call. It's actually really good and still scares the crap out of me.

Found footage movies are very cool and fascinating! They make the movies the all more realistic, due to how the cinematography is handled. Maybe one day in the future, we could get some sort of comeback which would be really cool! But for now, the found footage genre has seemed to to disappear. But at least all the ones we have gotten (from what I’ve seen) have been pretty good. So at least we have those

Paranormal Activity might just be the genesis of my most hated horror movie trope, characters getting attacked by invisible monsters… It’s not even slightly unsettling to see someone being pushed/pulled around by some unseen force; in fact, it’s often ironically hilarious. That said, PA still holds up well to this day.

I've always loved found footage. 'The Last Broadcast' is where modern FF starts in my opinion. If you watch the credits for Paranormal Activity, my name's in there as a donor lol I remember the theater being a madhouse the night it premiered. While I'll always have a soft spot for that franchise, my favorite is GRAVE ENCOUNTERS. It starts like a normal FF paranormal show but then devolves into pure nightmare fuel. Highly recommended!
EDIT : I wrote this during your intro. I didn't expect it to be your first choice! The Vicious Brothers have been working on GE3 for a while now. Hopefully it'll see the light of day eventually.

Great video, really took me back. I was 12 when Blair Witch came out. I remember watching the so called documentary about the incendent on the Sci-Fi channel before the movie came out. 100% thought it was real at the time.
Found footage will always be a favorite genera of mine, despits there being many bad ones.
Be it horror or comedy mocumentaries, I give them a chance. V.H.S is a series I keep missing butt have been meaning to marathon.
There really are a number of hidden gems. Behind the Mask, The Last Horror movie, The Taking of Debrah Logan.
As for a favorite, Grave Encounters is one that still makes me jump and look away. Though I feel we' re on the cusp of more great found footage.
I had stopped look until recently when I discovered the Hell House LLC franchise and the Fear Tape series. Those newer franchises really resparked my interest and hopes for more.

What made Blair Witch great was that the actors were actually filming as well. It was real handheld footage. But then stuff like Cloverfield would fake the handheld aspect and do it really badly to were it was almost unwatchable. Found footage needs to be raw not polished. That's the whole point of Found footage, it's suppose to be like an average person catching something on film, that makes it seem more real.

I remember that I saw BWP as a teen and those were other times. It wasnt common sense that everything you see in reality tv was scripted. I was quite naive but so were my peers because it was not like anything anyone of us had seen before. A little bit like the war of the worlds radio show must have been altough we had a strong sense of doubt. Is this real? Could it be real? It looks so convincing and is most of the time very consistent (you dont get cuts or edits or shots that disturb the illusion of found footage). Great video!

I'm surprised you didn't mentioned like, the entire phenomena that is web found footage, like not even counting analog and digital horror as subgenres, althought those can be good when done correctly, i could like mention so many found footage webseries like Marble Hornets, EverymanHYRBID, HiImMaryMary, Daisy Brown, Stan Frederick, the entirety of the slenderverse, lonelygirl15 and its spin-offs, i personally think like, found footage as a thing never went away, it just kinda left the mainstream for a while, and i personally disagree completely on the "Suspension of disbelif about cameras" aspect, i think the opposite, with modern day, there's so many cameras around us at all times, in our phones, in our computers, in our devices, i think found footage has never been more suited for it, everyone already has a camera on their pocket at all times, and you could also just make the character holding the camera a camera freak that likes having cameras, or like what Creep 2 did, a youtuber, or a vlogger, or what REC and Blair Witch did, just straight up a cameraman. Wham City Comedy made this p popular short/ARG for Adult Swim called This House has people in it, that one utlized CCTV footage, in a house of a family that was being monitored, and you could go to a real website, solve puzzles, and use a DOS-esq interface to manually activate recordings and documents, and phone calls, oh and thats not even counting ARG's and Unfiction, and non-found footage/found footage related things like that, then there's mockumentaries, and comedy found footage, fantasy found footage, and yes as i mentioned, Analog Horror and Digital horror are a thing that can be done really well, and i'm surprised there hasn't been many more like screen recording found footage films because there's like 4 and 2 of them are bad, and you can also play with metanarratives, and play with the format and have amazing shots and scenes taking advantage of the genre, you can blur the reality of what is real or not, acting or a thing that is really happening, both in the narrative and outside of it making the audience question what's happening, you can have this weird contrast between the really realistic format of found footage, video, that's supposed to be this objective thing but contrast it with things that make no logical sense, or are impossible for them to happen, like Skinamarink and We are going to the world's fair, and i'm rambling, i'll stop, this is a good video, very well done, i enjoyed it.

I don’t know why, but I just don’t like found footage movies. I have nothing against you if you like them, but when I watch them, they just feel TOO much like they’re just people recording themselves, even when there’s a great story. I know that’s the point, but they just don’t feel enough like movies to me (even though they are), and they just feel TOO amature, and not in a good way. It’s harder to escape from reality with them, too. They just aren’t my thing. I’ve wanted to watch District 9, Chronicle, and Apollo 18, but I just can’t shake the feeling that I won’t like them because they are found footage.

I actually love this genre a lot. Host, missing, Rec, paranormal activity, chronicle, unfriended, cloverfield, etc. however I think the Blair witch project is top 10 worst movies I’ve ever seen. Didn’t like it as a kid and I still don’t like it.
