The monologue scene legit made me ball my eyes out, it was some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever seen on film, and such a poignantly phrased way of talking about the value and magic of being a human being
if you havent done fall of house of usher its just as good, and i say that reluctantly, because midnight mass is in my top 5 of best horror movie/series put to film
I fuckin adore Mike Flanagan's Netflix shows Hill House and Midnight Mass are two shows I'd consider very close to a Masterpiece in media. The other two are exceptional as well
The reason why the children don’t remember bly manor is as they were possessed by Peter and miss Jessel for most of the time, it’s shown a lot throughout the show such as miles flirting with Dani
i think midnight club is definitely more of a grower. since flanagan clearly intended for it to be at least two seasons long, there were of course many details and plot points that didn't get their proper closure, and so he literally had to go and spoil all his plans for the viewers (pretty sure it's on tumblr if anyone's curious) and for me, since i read the book after watching the show (like i did with hill house and turn of the screw as well lol), i think he did an excellent job at fleshing out the characters. of course, a tv show has a lot more time and room to expand on plot points and world-building, so many of the details we get in the book from pike feel more centred on the show. i also think that there was One Particular Character whose death he decided to write out that made me really, really happy... his death didn't sit right with me in the book so learning that flanagan was going to keep him alive made me so happy lol this was an excellent video essay!! i really enjoyed it, keep up the good work
Didn’t know midnight club was a Flanagan show till this video. Definitely gonna check that out now. Hill house was incredible, definitely up there with TWD and breaking bad imo. Bly manor and midnight mass were both great as well, and that house of usher show sounds like it could be really cool, depending on what Flanagan does with the source material.
I honestly didn't know Doctor Sleep was Mike Flanagan until he said it. I loved Doctor Sleep, which now makes so much sense why I loved all of his Netflix shows, which I'm getting ready to rewatch for the Halloween spooky season
Mike, as the gem he is, actually posted online what he wanted in the second season of The Midnight Club and it would have wrecked me completely. With that the story would have come to a conclusion. It's a shame it won't be made.
It's crazy how super familiar I am with his words and didn't realize it until you listed some of it in the beginning. I'm more of fan than I thought I was. Lol
Coming to this video a year late, but... I have become a huge Flanagan fan in the last few years. I think "Hill House" is easily his masterpiece. The way events unfold and the resolution for every character is just... It's perfect. "Midnight Mass" was probably the next best, and "The House of Usher" ended up so damn good.
I agree. I absolutely love Flanagan's work, as a huge Stephen King fan I was mind blown at what he accomplished with Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. I loved Midnight Mass and Fall of the House of Usher, liked the Midnight Club, Hush, and Oculus. But for me, Hill House is his magnum opus. There were a few things I didn't care for but the story, writing, acting, etc. are amazing. One of my favorite series ever.
Would you be interested in reviewing the Netflix movies Fear Street Parts 1-3? I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts about the overall execution and story line
Unpopular opinion: I didn't enjoy Hill House nearly as much as Bly Manor/Midnight Mass/Usher. As far as personal level of enjoyment, I'd rank them like this: 1. Usher 2. Midnight Mass 3. Bly Manor 4. Hill House 5. The first episode of Midnight Club (haven't watched the whole thing). Ranking just on more objective quality, I'd put Bly Manor on top.
Ahhh! I’ve been thinking that of all Flanagan’s haunted house literature adaptions (Haunting of Hill House, Turn of the screw) that The Fall of the House of Usher HAS to be next. How exciting!!!!!!
My dude really tried to say the original haunting wasn’t very good at first lmao, nice save. It’s only THE quintessential haunted house thriller of its time, and influenced pretty much everything that came afterwards. Not to mention it holds up completely to this very day.
Unfortunately, Netflix is not planning on releasing Midnight Mass, Midnight Club and the Fall of the House of Usher on Blu Ray and i want to own them as i own Hill House and Bly Manor.
You said that Bly Manor confused you. To me, that means you missed something (not sure what) that I saw. I have never felt that it was meant to be Hill House mark 2 at all. They're different shows, with different themes, that share actors, motif, and music.
Hi, loved your video, but I have to say that it depends on every person which twist in these shows are obvious and which aren't. When I was watching Bly manor I was so focused on those smaller storylines and the dept of those characters that I didn't see much coming. But with midnight mass which I also love, I saw most of the plot twist from the beginning. I knew who were the bad guys and what would eventually happen.
Bly Manor was the favorite of mine and all my friends. (Now we did watch it first before Hill House. I’m not sure what you watch first influences anything.) It is so weird that some of the criticisms you have of Bly is what my husband doesn’t like about Hill House.
Haunting of Hill House is definitely the best of all his series & I agree arguably the best horror series ever & I love TWD & AHS! Glad I saw it after Bly because Bly was too slow for me. I’m watching midnight mass now so I don’t wanna be too spoiled. But yea Haunting of Hill House is the best adaptation of the book even the more recent movie adaptations suck this is the best!
Warner Brothers robbed Dr Sleep by giving it the 1st week of November release date aka always tragically low box office! Especially for a horror release, it was so dumb!
I didn’t like the ending of Hill House. I thought the mother was trying to protect her children from the spirits from the house but it was actually the house that was demonic and it brutally attack the mother, but nope it was completely lame ending they had ruined it for me.
Hill House is genuinely one of the best pieces of media I have seen
Midnight mass was such a beautiful show, I wish i could forget it and watch it again for the first time.
I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked it .. and I cried like a baby at the end 😂
I haven’t seen it yet, but after reading your comment, I really want to now….❤
The monologue scene legit made me ball my eyes out, it was some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever seen on film, and such a poignantly phrased way of talking about the value and magic of being a human being

I stayed up watching it in one night, very irresponsibly. Zero regrets.

I was about to say the original The Haunting is considered a masterpiece of the genre, definitely far from a poor reception lol
Bly was my all time favorite, I found myself so invested in the characters and I just fell in love with everyone and the whole story
My wife and I love his movies and shows so much. Haunting of bly manor was so good! He deserves so much more love.

Sad that there is not going to be a Season 2 of The Midnight Club.
Thanks for the reviews and Updates and Video 😀
I really liked Midnight Mass. I agree with your analysis on it. Nice video.
Oculus and Doctor Sleep do deserve more praise! I didn't even realize that Flanagan was behind Doctor Sleep. Good Stuff.
I honestly didn't know Doctor Sleep was Mike Flanagan until he said it. I loved Doctor Sleep, which now makes so much sense why I loved all of his Netflix shows, which I'm getting ready to rewatch for the Halloween spooky season
Yes, I am watching in the future and got excited about his next project, only to learn it's coming out on amazon.
I hope he gets to make his Dark Tower adaptation.
Mike, as the gem he is, actually posted online what he wanted in the second season of The Midnight Club and it would have wrecked me completely. With that the story would have come to a conclusion. It's a shame it won't be made.
Bly Manor needs more love😩
It's crazy how super familiar I am with his words and didn't realize it until you listed some of it in the beginning. I'm more of fan than I thought I was. Lol
I wasn’t a huge Midnight Club fan, but after reading Mike’s post about future season’s storyline I am beyond saddened we never got the extra seasons!
WHere did you read that please??

Awesome video! Hill house is one of my favorite shows of all time. I've watched it at least 5 times.
I love watching YT reactions to it, it's the closest I'll ever get to watching it for the first time again
@@kimberlyjeanne9456 seriously!
3:13 the sentence "adapting for modern a audiance" gives me chills XD
😂😂😂 this is one of the rare cases that it’s not actually a bad thing
@@thethriftytypewriter alright then XD. Just noticed i made a stupid typing error btw haha
I'd really like a Midnight Mass book or better yet some kind of book series.
love that mike closed midnight club with at least the tumblr post since we didn't get a second season
I forgot about hush and oculus, i agree that those two movies are pretty great.
Would you be interested in reviewing the Netflix movies Fear Street Parts 1-3? I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts about the overall execution and story line
The conversations at midnight mass were pretty much my favorite part
Take away that and all you’ve got is vampires
Midnight mass was so good dude i want to rewatch it now
Unpopular opinion: I didn't enjoy Hill House nearly as much as Bly Manor/Midnight Mass/Usher. As far as personal level of enjoyment, I'd rank them like this: 1. Usher 2. Midnight Mass 3. Bly Manor 4. i know this is an old video but mike flanagan said he did intend for midnight club to be at least 2 seasons and already had season 2 planned out
woah I didn't even realize this was a new video I throw your vids on to binge while I do work and was like wheres all the comments?? lmao
Came out today not much to go through just yet 😂
I really didn't understand how The Midnight Club Netflix series connects with Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition man I love this game
Ahhh! I’ve been thinking that of all Flanagan’s haunted house literature adaptions (Haunting of Hill House, Turn of the screw) that The Fall of the House of Usher HAS to be next. How exciting!!!!!!

Netflix sucks now 😒

Strong disagree. Bly Manor is frickin' AWESOME!
I'm salty that there wasn't a little picture for The Innocents among the Turn of the Screw adaptations. It's my personal favorite!

i need to watch all of these ! (and his movies, ive only seen 2? )
Midnight mass was my absolute fav!!
Have you seen Dexter? If so you should make a video on it
Hill House is truly a masterpiece! Just perfection for all genres!
Bly Manor was the favorite of mine and all my friends. (Now we did watch it first before Hill House. I’m not sure what you watch first influences anything.) It is so weird that some of the criticisms you have of Bly is what my husband doesn’t like about Hill House.
When is Fall of the House of Usher coming? Great review btw.
It's out i think 🤔 I could be wrong. Google it bud ✌️
We miss you Thrifty it's been an entire week lol idk if I can keep going on
Big things coming 👀👀
@@thethriftytypewriter I figured I'm just impatient lol but It'll pay off
The monologues did not start with midnight mass. They were definitely present in hill house. Flanagan definitely has a pacing problem.

"nobody actually talks like this" buddy I implore you to meet a person with ADHD lmao
I felt really called out when he said “nobody talks like this” cause if I am excited about a topic, yes I will. 😂
1:41 call of duty zombies. I heard it. Woohoo
I was not aware midnight mass had other media connected
I thought you were doing cod zombies next
Soon 👀👀
You had me up until you said you don’t know who Mark Hamil is! LOL Luke Skywalker ring a bell? 😂
I think he was being sarcastic. 😁

Meh
I think horror genre right now is a dumpster festival with 98% of garbage from what i heard, i don't like horror genre
I think he's overrated. None of his stuff I could get through besides Dr Sleep and Occulus. Those were pretty good.
Watch his shows, talented showrunner/director for horror
