it's amazing the amount of mythology they created and how little of it was actually present in the movie. Likely my favorite horror movie. Great video

This is always my answer when asked for the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. I have to start with a disclaimer to explain context and repeating the phrase “Hear me out” before finishing my analysis. This response is met with laughter for the most part. BUT it always makes for a more interesting answer than the usual titles.

A UA-camr named Goose Boose did a video like this during their series called Traumathon, although it was only ~17 minutes since they were releasing a video every day of October. It's always great to see you go this in depth with a subject you're clearly passionate about.

GooseBoose was actually one of the biggest influences in regards to me starting my channel, and that video itself was why. This video is sort of my take on that!

This movie traumatized me when I was younger. But it’s since become a favorite of mine. It’s crazy how big the found footage genre became and how influential this film was. Plus A lot of internet media such as the Mandela catalogue or Marbel Hornets and others wouldn’t exist at least not in the same form without this movie. All the years later it’s still as effective as when it first came out. Love it

Agreed! I didn't know it wasn't real until the day after I watched it and remembered the end credits stating it was fictional. I knew nothing of the internet stuff until after I watched it.

The Blair Witch Project is my all-time favorite found footage film. I love the mythology and the viral marketing. Although I already knew it wasn't real when I watched it as a teen, I still found it scary. I still find it scary as an adult since it feels authentic, and the fear comes from what you don't see.

The fact anyone thought this was real ( I did as a kid) is a testament to the quality of the actors and editors.

I don’t think that could be pulled off today. The combination of using unknown actors in conjunction with a time where you couldn’t just google everything can’t be replicated again. Now within 5 minutes someone would find their instagrams and know they’re still alive.

Man, do I love this! I'm happy someone recointed all the build-up and production of one of my favorite movies! You even caught just how special it was! While I never saw the movie during it's heyday. (I was like, 1.) But I did see it with my grandmother. She thought it was real even into the mid-2000s. So we were scared to death watching it together!
Sure, I know now it's all fake. But seeing it with that context, late at night in a room that didn't even have proper flooring yet, it was special.

I remember my grandmother also believing the movie was real. I was 8 when this movie came out and was already terrified of watching the movie 😂 my gran would ask me “did you hear about those students who went missing in the woods??”. That just made me avoid the movie more 😂 I did watch Blair witch when I was 15 and ended up loving it. It’s my favourite horror movie of all time!

I had the ability to see Blair Witch Project in the theaters opening night with a pact theater at the age of 14. I thought it was terrifying because at the time...internet was still so new. There was no real way to know if it was real or not. I love it and still do to this day. I always tell people that the Blair Witch Project was an experience and not just a movie.

BWP is my favorite horror movie of my 62 years of being a horror movie enthusiast. I regret not seeing it in the theater but got the DVD and watched it for the first time on Halloween night in my dark basement. It wasn't dark for long though! LOL
I'm pleased that the Last Broadcast was mentioned because it is wayyy similar to BWP and came out before it.
If IRC, that fact was mentioned to Myrick and Sanchez, and they said they were not aware of this movie. I found that a bit questionable because they are horror film enthusiasts themselves, and they knew about all the other movies that are said influenced BWP but not THAT one?

The sudden mention of Marble Hornets really got me, especially with so much of it being influenced by Blair Witch and then the trend of the "Slenderverse" args that were not only inspired by MH but also inspired directly by Blair Witch. I admit I've only seen the movie once, and while the hype kind of spoiled it for me and I don't find it that scary, I do have much respect for its place in horror film history and the lore is creepy. There was one additional mockumentary you didn't mention, _The Burkittsville Seven_ , which takes a true-crime approach to the Rustin Parr murders in particular. It even opens with a talking head who dismisses not just the legend of the Blair Witch, but the very movie it ties into, as hokum. Specifically, it focuses on the eighth child Parr abducted, the one he made stand in the corner, and his own decades of psychological torment and downward spiral from the trauma of this event, though there are plenty of hints that the boy wasn't quite right before all that.

    • @NEScRETRO
      @NEScRETRO  9 місяців тому +2

The reason why I didn't mention it was because that came out a while later after the film and initial mockumentaries, and was, from what I recall, made to hype up Blair Witch 2 Book of Shadows, which I didn't really want to get in to in this vid lol

They sound interesting but they definitely confuse me about how exactly they work. Especially on your super long horror/creepy UA-cam videos iceberg the term came up a lot

I was in my late teens when this came out. The viral internet thing was real...I heard about the websites that were popping up from one of my friends before I ever saw the TV ads for the movie. I remember going to one of the sites and sort of figuring out that it was a marketing campaign, but it took me a little while...they did a really good job of projecting that this was a documentary and that this was real found footage...I mean of course after a bit I figured it out, but the whole thing was really well done and intriguing. Very ahead of its time. The movie itself wasn't even that great in my opinion, but all the stuff around it made it.

I've always known this movie had people fooled at release but i never knew the producers went to the extreme to make it seem like it was real. makes me wish i was a teen during those years instead of a toddler

Very good job on the video hon, please keep up the great work; I loved your video, but I'm not a huge fan of The Blair Witch project, haha! Gosh you know, I was in I think my fourth year of university when The Blair Witch Project came out - and straight off the bat I really disliked it. The entire concept of found footage seemed so pointless to me: the movie in itself was not scary. The thing that would presumably make it scary is if it were actually real. But... you know from the beginning that it isn't real. They just... filmed it as though it were shot in an amateur way. Meaning that on top of not being scary and not being real, it was annoying to watch a lot of the time. When it came out I couldn't fathom what the point was. What's scary about a movie that doesn't feature particularly scary events, and isn't real but is shot in a deliberately amateurish way as to make it look "as though it were real"? Unfortunately this led to an entire genre of horror movies called "found footage" to follow, all of which was based on this same premise: not scary and not real but shot in an amateurish way "as though it were real." As a fan of horror an suspense I had found myself endlessly wading through found footage titles in an attempt to find horror films that weren't found footage, because movie websites didn't distinguish between the two, they were just both listed under horror. Honestly, as someone from that generation, who watched Blair Witch in the theater when it was first released, I feel that it was immensely overrated and I don't like that sort of thing at all. Regardless though, I still really loved your video and really enjoy your content, please keep it up!
