The lack of infected waters down Joel’s choice in the end. The audience immediately supports Joel’s choice because there is no risk for society without Ellie’s sacrifice. Marlene emphasizes Ellie’s importance to save the world, even though we really haven’t been exposed to a lot of infected

Maybe a little but the show is still showing the effect of having infected has had on the world and the stpry gas always been more about people's reaction to crisis as opposed to the crisis itself. It would be cool to have more infected but not necessary imo. Maybe 1 more big sequence with them but idk

I don't agree at all. In the show the infected are a much much greater threat because we know that person can't simply rambo through any of them. Joel and Tess nearly die to two clickers, two(And Tess does die due to this). Compare that to Joel alone soloing dozens upon dozens by the end of the story.

I didnt like the fact that Ellie clearly doesnt see Joel as a father figure in the show while in the game it was sooo obvious, in the show she sees him more as a friend and her equal while they make it out to be like Joel is just replacing Sarah with Ellie

I like how how pedro's joel is much more visibly shaken throughout the events of the series. I think it adds more dimension to his character and will ultimately make the outcome more nuanced and heartbreaking. Game joel kind of feels like a terminator at times (especially considering how many more bodies he has) while show Joel feels more like a regular dude who has done what he needed to do to survive and is constantly horrified by what he has become.

spoiler for tlou2: i think while this makes his final decision in the end of season 1 of the show a lot more intense, I think its going to take away from Joels end in the next season. Unless we get to see a lot more of Joels brutality through flashbacks before his death, it is going to upset audiences even more than the game did, as in the show Joel is a lot less brutal. Either way, if the writers can understand how their changes have adapted the audiences perception, I believe they will do just as good as a job as they did with adapting the first game.

@lorcejay2596 Ellie and Joel feel flat as paper(I'm blaming the directors, Pedro Pascal is a good actor and he could've nailed Joel's personality had they let him), Joel is no longer a stone cold badass but a baby with inconvenient PTSD episodes, Ellies a bit of a psychopath, they took out basically all of the action, the infected are in the show for maybe 30 minutes and have been turned into a hivemind that can burrow through the ground and move like acrobats(also removed the spores so the infected aren't a threat at all really), removed/changed/combined important moments in awful ways(like Ellie shooting the bandit drowning Joel, they combined it with the ambush in Kansas City, but Ellie doesn't kill the bandit and they don't fight about it afterwards), they gave whole episodes to side characters but changed the characters completely(Bill was always gay in the game, but the entire episode might as well have a rainbow painted over it, Bill isn't Bill anymore, he dies and we don't ever get to see his and Ellies interactions or the whole section where they go to the school for the battery, they just get the car and Bill's town is completely secure, they ruined Sam and Henry as well, these episodes break the pacing completely), Maria is basically just Michonne from TWD(not bad, but certainly a ripoff), they decided to add mentions of Ellie getting periods for some reason(Maria literally gives her a period cup), Ellie doesn't run away to the farmhouse after finding out Joel's trying to get Tommy to take her(they fight in her room and it's not emotional at all and then they go to sleep and Joel just decides to take Ellie again himself in the morning for no real reason), David is now a Christian cult leader(not religious myself, but my family is and I'm personally tired of every Christian being portrayed as evil psychopaths, do it to another religion for once or just don't do it) they kept the giraffe scene but CGI'd the crap out of the real giraffe they got making it look terrible, and honestly I could go on, but this is already a long paragraph and I feel this is enough to let you decide whether to try to watch it or not.

So I’ve never played the games, a lot of my close friends had and thoroughly enjoyed it! I was very very excited for this series since I just finished game of thrones and I appreciated the time and effort put it by HBO. So I was soooo excited.
I can honestly say now that season 1 has concluded that the game is FAR BETTER. I’ve been watching the scenes off the game on UA-cam and man I see why the gamers are upset.
The first 2 episodes of the show were amazing. Pacing, effects, acting, writing. But episode 3 and 7 are great examples of how POINTLESS backstory can be with no PURPOSE in mind!
Episodes 3 and 7 take you away from Joel and Ellie to give long dragged out story that does NOTHING for the main storyline.
Not to mention those episodes are just boring.
Also watching Ellie in the game is like a different character than Ellie in the show. In the game Ellie is a little girl who doesn’t know how to handle this world but in the show she somehow handles almost everything on her own.
Again I had never played the games until the show ended. The Ellie in the game is so likeable and believable. Belle Ramsay’s Ellie is written like she’s got everything figured out and is never in real danger. Padro Pascals Joel comes across as weak and unprepared at times while Joel in the game is a master survivalist in this apocalyptic world.
My friend said it best. “The show is a solid 8/10 if the show runners wrote it BUT since the story was written for them 10 years ago, they have no excuse to mess it up this bad. So it’s a 4/10”. 🤣🤣
    In conclusion.
    I’m buying the game. Lol

I played it on PS3 when it came out and it blew my mind. I played the remastered version on PS4. I haven't watched the series because of casting / story changes / familiarity.
I waited a year after part 2 came out to play it and it also blew my mind, but it was also so mean spirited I refused to watch the show. Neil Druckmann is a sadist, leftist, troll. He intentionally built in a traumatic experience for the player with the second game. While I understand what he chose to do I still felt betrayed.

Yep. There were significant Times Jumps between several episodes that could/should have been filled in for Show watchers...
Largely as a "Show first" watcher (UA-cam eventually suggested a "Left Behind" compilation to me just before the Episode dropped so watched it beforehand then "played" a Movie version of Part 1, in episode segments, to get caught up after each new episode aired) I don't think they offered anything new or skipped anything too drastic in the Timeline (except maybe subbing the Dam and Jackson).
Would have been nice to have filled in some of those gaps that neither show or game offered as build up for the characters. Seems more likely they'll have chances to do just that during S2+ (maybe using some of the deleted, blooper,or extended S1 scenes as "filler"? And of course "new" content...).

I would have liked to see more infected, but I was also happy with what we got. At the end of the day, and the same is true for The Walking Dead, the infected are there mostly to serve as the reason for the world the characters live in, and so to see a show focus on people's humanity and finding reasons to love and live for in a hostile world, presented (mostly) so beautifully, I was cool with a lesser focus on infected. After all, it's called 'The Last of Us' and not 'Attack of the killer mushroom men' for a reason

My biggest fear was that the ending would be changed into something that would better fit the retcons in the second game. But they actually stuck to the original ending. I was never even a fan of the game, I found the actual gameplay of it to be very boring and it’s laughably basic enemy AI took me out of the experience many times. @@Neverdieonce I mean, you can compare certain aspects, but we can never really say which one is better overall because they’re both different. Here’s what I mean by that…
The game has the dynamic of gameplay which the TV show doesn’t have. In the game not only are you actually playing with the characters and responsible for them (ultimately growing a stronger bond with the main characters) but you only view the game from the perspective of Joel and Ellie, also Sarah for a tiny bit in the beginning.
The show is able to take you away from Joel and Ellie and show you the same world from the perspective of other characters, essentially bringing them to life. This is how we’re able to get better backstories on characters like Henry and Sam that weren’t in the game. We’re able to do things like go to Indonesia in episode 2 and see how their government reacted during the initial outbreak. We got a better look Into fedra QZ’s being overtaken by the oppressed people living there etc
The game has game design and graphics that add to how we perceive the game. The show doesn’t.
They’re 2 different dimensions of the same world. You can definitely have an opinion on which one you like better and you’ll never be wrong, but it’s almost impossible to say that one is objectively better than the other

I've finished playing the game for the first time today after watching the show a few months back. The game is way better.
I was personally very underwhelmed by the show even when I had no context of the game. It felt to me like an overrated game which was only acclaimed because how charged of ambiguity is the ending. I found the relationship between Joel and Ellie not believable enough and in general aside from Bill and Franks episode nothing really hit me emotionally. I did think that the whole sequence in the hospital was done very well and I loved the way the shootout was directed and how it emphathized that while Joel is doing this for someone he loves and becajse of his trauma because if what hapoened with Sarah what he's doing is objectively an unforgivable crime. That's pretty much it.
Now, the game. Ellie and Joel's relationship is way more organic and Joel's character is handled way better. My problem with Joel in the show is that he's too openly vulnerable and while there is vulnerability in Game Joel is a closed vulnerability. The open vulnerability on itself is fine but I found it odd and inconsistent when put against the parts of the show that are closer to how he is in the game. And with the open vulnerability comes the "It wasn't time that did it" moment which would've been beautiful in the game with the context and buildup of the game but in the show feels unearned, rushed and in terms of script manipulative since they're telling you what they should've shown you and you as a viewer should've taken from watching their journey throught the whole nine episodes. It's a poor manipulative attempt at doing the job the show should've done since it's beggining in just one scene.
As for the hospital, I'm torn but I slightly prefer the game too. I think for the TV Show the more outside perspective during that sequence works better because of what I've mentioned. In the game it's more personal not just because you control Joel but tone-wise with the music. Plus you get the audios from Marlene and the part of Joel carrying Ellie throughout the place while the guards follow them and the elevator with Joel saying "Oh God" at the realization of what he's done.
Another thing I prefer in the game is David. You can sill predict that the guy is not trustworthy but the game makes you feel like Ellie. You have the same information she has. You spend a good time with him, fighting with him before the reveal and he even helps you and you help him so by the time the reveal comes if you suspected you might have even stopped doing it. The show just shows you from the beggining his cult leader personality and how much of a piece of shit (doesn't she slap a woman in the face if I remeber correctly?) he actually is so by the time Ellie meets him you have more info than she does and while that can be effective in a dramatic irony type of way I think it works better if you are in the same mindset she is in.
All in all, If I had to say something is that what the show needed the most is more of the small talk (and not so small) that Ellie and Joel have during the gameplay sections, more of the closeness of Game Joel at first to make the progression more visible and natural and certainly we didn't need so much time spent on Sam and his brother and the woman that was after them before they meet Joel and Ellie. And while Bill and Frank were the highlight (and I like this stuff in the show more) I would've reduced the flashback a little bit and spent more time on the present focusing in the main characters since you know they're the main characters and their relationship and the connecton the audience has with their relationship is essential in order to make the ending truly hit.
Also, the part of the bus close to the hospital when Ellie drowns and Joel tries to desperately revive her and doesn't care he's havibg guns pointed at him while doing it because she's more important than his life should've been in the show instead of that lame attack with the smoke grenades.

I wish the show had more episodes too, like one or two more and they still could've kept most of their plan the same.
Episodes 1-3, keep them all the same.
Episodes 4-6, keep 4 and 5 the same, change episode 6 ending to not have them shoehorn in the University so quick.
Episode 7-9, 7 do the university and have them hole up in a mall so Ellie can have the Left Behind flashback, split episode 8 across two episodes (8 and 9).
Then Episode 10, have the finale be an hour+ long just so the moments can breathe more.
Do I wish there were more infected? Of course. Do I wish there was at least one more episode to let things breathe a little more? Definitely? Do I think how they adapt Part II across the next two seasons needs to be seriously good so this show doesn't turn into TWD Season 8? Absolutely.
I loved this adaptation for what it was. I would give it a solid 8.5-9 out of 10. I am so surprised by how well it was for what we got, and I am eagerly anticipating what comes next for the Last of Us show wise and hopefully Part III game wise. This story isn't over. I am glad it gets to continue and be brought to so many others.
Also, loved your video man. Keep it up!!!

I played the game first, loved it for years before the show came out. So yes, I do like the game overall better. However, I like the show version of Joel far more than the game version. I feel the same with Ellie. They have a humanity in their actions and dialogue that we never got in the game. Moments like Joel talking to Tommy about his fears are a prime example.
It always bothered me that Ellie's influence on Joel was that he learned to connect again, and his influence on her was that she became guarded and violent. The show takes a more nuanced approach to the relationship: that both Joel and Ellie have the potential for acts of love and violence. That they bring out the best, and the worst in each other. To me, this is an improvement from the game, where it felt like Ellie had been corrupted by Joel. Which has its place in storytelling, but felt hollow after he had changed in a much more positive way.

    Short answer… no
Long answer, it does do some things better and a few added scenes/pieces of dialogue worked better. I had a few scenes I wish we would have got (upside down trap scene, bill and Ellie interactions, Ellie a David fighting the infected etc) but overall no. I think if we had 12+ episodes in this season with a slower pace more infected scenes wit might have been much better

And I definitely agree that the pacing is a strange (it felt like the first 5 episodes took things at a slower pace with two of them being over an hour long, with the latter 4 episodes being much faster paced and shorter, especially the finally), episode 3 was amazing in isolation in terms of storytelling, but in terms of game story adaptation and pacing it's problematic because it really sucks you out of the present storyline (although this is aides by the Joel and Ellie parts of the episode) and it's all show exclusive and we miss out on all the Bill's Town story and the interactions between Bill, Joel and Ellie. There's also a criminal lack of infected, and yes, it's not a "zombie" show, but it is a show with zombies IN it, it's a post apocalyptic world swarming with infected, yet we hardly ever see them, and the encounters we do get go for more quality over quantity with infected being more horrifying and harder to kill than in the game where you go around stealth killing them with ease

IMO the first season's episodes just needed to be longer to not feel rushed. I understand the lack of infected due to the budget but they could have managed it better. other than that there are some nitpicks which I don't mind much since they didn't take away too much from the overall story. I haven't played the games cause I've never had a PS4/5 to play them on and I know the story through youtube recaps and some gameplay footage but I still prefer the Game, for me everything about the first game is perfect and therefore would be a10 and so the show would be 8.5 or a 9 to me. While neither replaces the other both the show and the Game add to each other where the other couldn't because of the format they were on. for example, you could never get Bill and Frank's backstory in the game but now we have that while also having the interactions between Ellie, Joel, and Bill in the game.
and as for Part 2 IMO they should do it in chronological order cause the flashback thing would not work for TV and it's record in movies and TV hasn't been that good cause by the time you come back to the main story everyone has forgotten about it. A perfect start for it would be showing Abby and her Dad in the first episode and ending it with her going to the hospital, cutting to black when she finds her dad and then going from there with Joel and Ellie stuff at the same time with Abby stuff.

Spoilers for the 2nd game for those of you who havent played
I was telling a friend that maybe season2 should start off with abbys pov with her father and the giraff and stuff, and it leads up to his death, that way they build an emotional connection to abby, then cuts to them in Jackson finding a man they're looking for, then we can cut to ellie and Joel and their bonding moment, then we cut to the actual beggining of the game where Joel explains Tommy what happened and such, then fast forward to where ellie and Joel aren't really getting along and them going on patrol setting up the 2 stories to collide, Joel and Abby run into each other she leads him the mansion and gets killed and from there I feel like the back and fourth thing they tried having can work a lot better (of course I probably forgot some of the things that happened because I haven't replayed the 2nd game as of lately, but from what I remember maybe something like that can work out)

I really truly hope that the second season makes more use of the flashbacks to show just how Joel became who he was when we first meet him in Boston, as opposed to strictly following the second game. This is the perfect opportunity to give more depth to these characters like Tommy, Tess, hell even Marlene, and to show more of the creation, and breakdown of Joel, and Ellie’s relationship over the years they spend in Jackson as a family as well. That in my opinion should be the whole point of an adaption when you already have such an entrenched, and well known story. However, that is just me wanting so terribly bad to know the full story of Joel, because we already have all of Ellie’s.

Well the show is good but it just copies the game and it's a pretty faithful adaptation. The actors did a good job. IMO the game is the pioneer of a great story with motion capture that's still good a decade later. I'd say the game did it best and keep in mind it's tough to capture all the emotion and acting with tech from a decade ago. The show does emotion better as it's real actors and it focuses less on action and more of drama. Both are the best for its medium but the game IMO gets top marks for being first. I don't think the show dramatically improves on the game much.
