A Couple months ago I started playing the Resident Evil games, for the first time. I was completley blown away by the remakes, not so much 5 or 6, but I heard that starting with the 7th installment, things got back on the right track. I even remember this being the general consensus before I was a fan, that the games started off really good, but as time went on they became not so good, and then shot back into the spotlight in 2017. So being a fan of this franchise, I was looking forward to RE7, but what I did not expect was the most terrifying, nightmare inducing, cry like a little baby at Margaruite, type of game that I’ve ever… I don’t really know what I’m saying. The point is, this game is scary.

I really liked Ethan as a protagonist. Something about him just being a regular person, the every man, trying to protect his family made him a lot easier to connect with. The supersoldier protags tend to feel a bit stale with the games mostly only featuring Leon and Chris, sometimes Jill. Ethan was very refreshing, I'd like to see more new people in future games.
but he isnt a regular person or the every man. Bro is a humanoid monster
See this is why I like making videos and hearing the thoughts of the comment section cause every post on the RE Reddit talks about how bad Ethan is 😂
@@thethriftytypewriter Lol yes, there is so much trashing Ethan, but I really took to him. He's on the list of gaming's best dads for me. I'll admit his dialogue wasn't the greatest, but he never failed to make me laugh with his bland one liners after finishing off a boss. 🤣
Something I love about Ethan in 7 is how often he'll speak things I'm thinking about
@@Neros_lightyeah in 8 he was saying things right after me lmao
Resident Evil 7 completely revived the franchise. Most people give all of the credit to the RE2 Remake, but RE7 was great and truly started Capcom's redemption arc 🔥
Actually it was the staggering record sales on PSN for the Hd RE 1 Remake and RE Zero on Ps3 and 4..
It showed Capcom that there is still a dedicated fanbase to original titles and thier vibes.. Hence RE7..
Nah it was Revelations 2
@@Demigod_3scrub Nah Re 2 and Re Remake, Village is what you call staggering sales.
Revelations 2 did that and gets none of the recognition or appreciation for it
Chris is the action hero, Leon is the rookie who grows up as the series goes on, and Ethan is the average Joe.
Something that made me love Ethan in 7 (haven't finished 8 yet), was that he'd often voice whatever I may have been thinking in some situations.
I remember the beginning hours and getting to the point where that cop hands Ethan a pocket knife and I was thinking something along the lines of:
"What exactly is a pocket knife gonna do to help me?" And Ethan not even a few seconds later speaks exactly what I was thinking. It felt like I could actually connect with his situation
You’re going to love the final boss fight then. Miranda repeatedly taunts him and says her crazy lunatic bullshit, and he’s constantly just expressing how fed up with it he is.
RE7 in VR is an experience I think everyone should check out - it’s probably my favorite gaming experience of all time
Ew no thanks.
I always was able to empathize with ethan. He was just a dude who got dragged into terrifying stuff. He’s often just as scared as I am when I play! Don’t get me wrong, Leon will always be my favorite but Ethan was a very engaging character for me.
The storybook thing actually isn't just a coincedence. That was mother Miranda telling the story- turning her story into a fairy tale.

Later in the game, you get a document stating that the Connections made Eveline appear as a little girl so she can better infiltrate an area as she was designed to be a weapon.
I know this may be a weak reason for her to be one, but I’d rather have one rather than “little girls are creepy”
Yeah but regardless of the fudge that is still most likely the reason she is there.
After seeing death island, I really hope we see all the main characters meet rose and other characters that’ve been MIAfor a while ( like Carlos, Jake, Sherry, and others ).
All the main characters except Jill, who apparently ages slow now, would be really old by then.
oh so u want a crap convoluted mess like re6?
We need Carlos back man, a true war crime.
@@halal_ibs6 slapped my boy.
I want Ethan to be in the next movie, but they keep to the no face thing. Since they control the camera they could do a lot of fun/funny stuff with it. (I.e. hiding it behind books, call him in for his IT job and keep him behind a screen, things keep whizzing by his head right when the camera is on it, he's behind the one library shelf with books at eye level, etc)
this channel is a godsent. you keep covering every single film/series/game that i’m interested in, it’s getting to the point of actually getting scary😂
2:43 I would be very surprised if someone wouldn’t be able to connect with Ethan. He’s the most relatable average Joe in the whole series, just looking for his wife. Most people aren’t members of SWAT teams or have gone on missions to save the presidents daughter.
Heisenberg is honestly one of the most wasted characters in the franchise in my opinion. Like he gets so rushed out of the plot despite being such an intriguing and satisfying character.
My only gripe with Ethan is how calm he is in horrifying situations
Awesome job on your videos. I find myself even watching the ones on stuff I didn’t like or watch just to hear your breakdown on them.
This came at such a right time! Just when I was replaying the RE's. Thank you for this
They heavily hinted Mia being more involved. she knew Mother Miranda and she wasn't killed after being kidnapped. Also could be just a easter egg but you can find "Mia's bag" at Luiza's house . she already lied to ethan in 7 I dont trust her character.
I hope we get a Resident Evil where it's just Ada's Story.
We know Jill.
We know Chris.
We know Claire.
And We know Leon but we don't really KNOW Ada.
She's a bit on an Engima.
And it'd be cool to explore her character in a RE Game where it's just her as the Player Character.
Imma say something controversial
Ethan Winters is my favorite Protagonist of the franchise ive played and i think the best in the series, for me. (RE 2 3 4 7 And 8]
Theres something so endearing about character going so far for his family. Ethan is such a tragic character because he loses everything, not because Mia or Rose die, but because he himself dies. He makes peace with death only because he knows in the end that Rose and Mia are alive. His entire motivation is to be a family with Mia and Rose, but in the end he has to do sacrifice himself and doesn't get what he ultimately wants. He was a loving husband unfairly dragged into a war he wanted no part of. He went through hell and high water for his family. He did everything that was asked of him. Be a good husband. Become a trained soldier. And in the end be the best dad he could ultimately could be.
In a world with characters like Leon, Claire, Jill, Carlos and Chris, the fact that Ethan comes close and sometimes surpassing them, is genuinely amazing.
A kind father and a loving husband who put his family ahead of himself. Rest in Peace
Im dramatic lol :p
Great video, I would definitely watch more resident evil videos as I am a somewhat new fan to the series aswell. Really enjoy your content.
As an OG RE fan, it’s been a blast hearing your thoughts on this franchise. Especially your somewhat hot takes like WANTING an auto-sort button for inventory (can’t believe people have complained about this when we have it especially cuz it’s optional to NOT auto-sort lol) or enjoying the more action focused sequences. Great videos!
Ethan Winters feels like a Dead Rising survivor that is promoted to a resident evil protag and I love him for that.
I Actually find Ethan more interesting then most people do. You should probably play the RE Village DLC. That basically wraps up Ethan and Rose’s story.
I started with the 7th; it’s my favorite game in the whole franchise. I love the Bakers, Jack & Lucas are my favs and Marguerite Bussy was disgustingly great😂😭 didn’t really care for the Mia part (boat and flashback) but y’know, it was a great game overall.
Resident Evil has gone through a couple trilogies. In fact thats how I break down the different "eras" both in series and in the lore itself. 1-3 is the t virus era, 4-6 is the plaga era, and 7-9 is (so far) the mold era. There is definitely overlap and oddities, parasitic monsters like nememis appeared in the originals; of course theres also the anomally of the G virus, and I have a pet theory that the mold is connected to Ouroboros, or vice versa. Even outside the main series you see several mini-duologies (failed trilogies more often than not, funny thing). RE seems to be a fan of having the full story told in these 'chunks' of timeline.
What makes RE extra special is unlike any other franchise out there as far as I know, with every eras close there is usually a less-than-popular third entry (RE3 being a very notable exception... Although Code Veronica, which might be the true 3rd entry in that trilogy, does follow the trend) that is followed by a SMASH HIT reinvention that blows everything else away and in RE4s case- reinvents the genre itself. Resident Evil comes back from the dead just as often as the monsters it features. Theres a ton of potential for 9 and if my theory of the patterning holds, I cant wait to be disappointed.
I discovered your channel recently because of TWD and if you're going to be breaking into RE then Im giving you a sub! You might be able to tell Im kind of a fan
Actually, because CODE: Veronica and 0 add on to the original era of the series and are actual main entries, the first part of the series is more of a pentalogy. So the only true trilogy right now is the second one (4-6) as we don’t know yet if Resident Evil 9 will be connected to the Ethan Winters duology. Also, The Sphere Hunter confirmed in her RE3 retrospective years ago that CODE: Veronica was never the “true” RE3.
Hey thrifty, always love the vids, think you could consider doing a video on the mad max universe? Maybe when furiousa comes out?
I would like to say that the story Mia tells isn't really coincidental, but it seems to be Mother Miranda simply manipulating things to go a certain way. Mother Miranda was puppeteering everything and was the one pretending to be Mia in the beginning of the game, so it most likely lines up for that reason. Great video by the way. Huge fan of you, and Resident Evil, so this video is a dream!
Yay someone that made a video on RE8 that doesn’t constantly shit on it. It’s probably one of my favorite games in the series probably right behind the three RE4s (Original, Remake, and VR)
Playing through the whole series right now, and I'm on 5. I'm gonna have to save this one to watch later
I brought RE 7 and 8 like 6 hours ago and this video just popped into my feed so i guess im saving this for later.
I finished RE8 for the first time today this is exactly what i needed to watch
It took me years to appreciate RE7. Now I’m hanging between RE2R and RE4. I love your channel aesthetic
People want an RE game to be scary again but they also want legacy characters to be the protagonist, which doesn’t make sense since the legacy characters have been fighting the good fight over and over again since the 90’s. What do they have to be scared of? This is their job now. Ethan being a normal character was good. The face thing was weird even during the final scene of Shadows of Rose
Yeaaaah boy!!!!! I can't wait!
cool video _!_
never played these games but for some reason I watch a lot of videos about them.. odd
The reason the bedtime story was the same as the village is cause it was Miranda telling the story to Ethan’s daughter cause she switched with the real Mia.
You should do more on the re games, deadspace etc. I enjoyed your analysis
The whole storybook in village isn't a missed opportunity at all, Mia is taken over with mother miranda while telling it so it's not a coincidence it's basically a warning to Ethan and foreshadowing for the game (maybe even Ethan's death because the girl at the end of the story loses and is implied she dies despite her efforts to stay alive)
I totally get that feeling of loving this game, but not wanting to replay it. I’m gonna replay all the resident evil remakes soon and afterwards get into seven and eight again, but I am so scared to face the baker family. marge especially, up until her part I thought I was use to everything, but her long arm grabbing that lantern, chills just thinking about it
re7 in VR is pants-shittingly horrifying. thats how i played it the first time, and as someone who doesn't scare too easily i had to put the game down after some sections (marguerite). gonna disagree about ethan though, ethan is awesome because he's an everyman. he's not some supercop and his dialogue can be corny but he's a relatable character, thrust into a world with BOW's
Re7 is insane. I couldn’t play it with headphones on just from all the bug noises and shit crawling all over. I’ve never been so freaked out from a game ever. Definitely a golden game
I’m late! I haven’t played any of them, hoping to play 7 soon!
Margaritte definitely scariest of 7 hands down. Her whole vibe is unnerving way before the greenhouse as well
Unlike the rest of the franchise, 7 and 8 actually have a consistent thematic throughline. That being of family. 7 has a family taken over by a girl desperate for a family, and 8 is about Ethan's family, as well as Miranda's. One cool thinf about 8 is that Ethan and Miranda basically have the same motivation. That is actually really cool and makes the final battle feel so much more important.
Anyone cautiously optimistic for Fallout tonight?
Thats tonight?! What time?!
@@Louie_the_red_footed_tortoise8 or 10 pm can't remember
@@Louie_the_red_footed_tortoise10pm :)
Apparently it's actually good
Nope, the brand lost me at 76
If you want a boss scarier than Margarite, then I highly recommend The Evil Within. I won't spoil, but imagine Margarite mixed with Sadako from Ring.
Also I don't know if you've played RE: Revelations 2 yet, but the cliffhanger at the end of that games makes me want a Revelations 3 sooooo badly
in my eyes, ethan is my favorite video game character, cant change my mind.
Wait in re7 did u play the other dlcs like the card game the bedroom and the one you play as zoey?
Have you played Resident Evil 1's Remake? (The one from 2002?) If so, maybe make a vid on that and the classics as well?
Great great game and so it 8, you can see the progression with ethan.
I really liked the factory. It mixed things up and the enemy design was good I thought. Heisenberg reminded me a lot of Dr. Frankenstein.
I'm sure some fans thought that Ethan was mutated by the mold in Resident Evil 7 like you did, but I don't think anybody thought that Ethan had died.
Now time for the movies!
Degeneration > Damnation > Vendetta > Infinite Darkness > Death Island
RE7 is just a masterpiece also RE8 is amazing cause they go even more into a original idea of werewolfs and I just love it
Ethan is a great character and I love 7 and 8
The storage system is meant to be a Tetris mini game and a way to limit resources
Ethan Winters should have end with a trilogy. It just makes sense.
If there was no Chris Redfeild and umbrella bssa
these 2 games can be its own thing
More videogame vids would be nice ngl
Idk where all the hate comes from these days for both these games. Especially 8. These games are both gold.
resident evil is goated if u wanna make more re vids ill be watching
I just finished the last chapter resident evil 7
I disagree with saying Ethan is badly written in re8, like for example when he disagreed with working with "Walter White" to use Rose as a weapon but in my opinion it makes cuz would you want to use your own daughter as a weapon to kill something?
resident evil 9 coming out ? where was i at ?
It was odd that you brought up RE7 DLC, but not RE8 DLC. You had to choose between 3rd and 1st person, so you played this after Shadows of Rose had been added to the game.
Building a game to be either 1st or 3rd isn't impossible, but it's a lot harder than you think it is. That perspective really changes things a lot. 1st is more immersive, but you also can't see as much at once as you can in 3rd person. Because of this RE4 Remake would be a disaster in 1st person, for example.
YUH
Can we get a deep dive on tron legacy and stranger things
Yeah it's a lot of Evil shit going on in the Baker's Residence
The factory won't be in the 3rd act on the next game. It will be the 2nd act.
My greatest fear
My last name is Winters believe it hits different lol
Eaten is as mortal as Rick Grimes! They are both immortal😂!
Wait you are using bullets? Most of us use the knife. Sadly your skipped over the Shadows over Rose DLC…
16:15 call me nuts but i actually enjoy playing inventory tetris 🤷♂️
In the beginning of the game that isn't the real Mia its mother Miranda
What do you mean re7 forced you to play on easy? That’s not true. They ask you if you want to change
I want to get these games I just don’t know if I will like it because I never really have played a horror game.
Try it out. I wasn’t a big horror gamer but the Resident Evil series changed my mind and has made me seek out other similar games. Start off with the Resident Evil 2 remake.
@@thethriftytypewriter Yea thanks. Love your videos btw. Watch every single one of your walking dead videos and I am currently rewatching the walking dead lol
You’ll get addicted to this games I guarantee you that 💯😎
@@rlicano848 should I get it on console or pc
Just wondering because idk if pc has issues or not
@@alexowens7032 I would say console is better as PC you may experience bugs and glitches
I think you'd have some valuable insight on Alan Wake 2 if you would like to give that game a trt
Try*
Resident evil games are split by the virus they depicted. 0,1,2,3 are about tvirus 4,5 are about las plagas. 6 has 3 games in one about the c virus. Then you have 7,8,9 about the mold
I think the RE2 remake is way scarier than RE7
I enjoy Ethan, i do believe he's a pretty mediocre character and contrary to popular belief, he is NOT an everyman, but he's definitely still enjoyable, and he doesn't deserve some of the overwhelming hate he gets. Also i don't get the hate of Chris in 8.
Resident evil 8 is not the same as RE4 both play and feel completely different
7 was so great and 8 ruined it.
We all thought RE was back. 8 is literally worse than 6 and it's like playing some X-Men fan fiction. Even 4 remake couldn't make up for it for me.
You're objectively wrong, 6 is worse than 8. 6 has no redeeming qualities with it being bloated up the ass, terrible gunplay, boring co-op and the characters are all boriing.
re7 made me poop my pants
Why even bother? Ethan is the worst character in resident evil history!
my man died 10 min into the resident evil 7....
a game that should have been a spin off instead of a main title
but that's a whole other conversation.
A RE protagonists dialogue being.. .terrible ? say it ain't so. It's almost as if RE has always been poorly written. Hmmm. Also you clearly miss the point on Ethan's face not being shown, it's a dumb inside joke as RE is a dumb goofy franchise. It's just RE being RE. Like not everything has to be this super serious immersion shit.
Ah, you're covering a series yet only playing the games that were ruined by Re4 which is why Re5 was bad and Re6 was worse somehow.
I don't understand how this is when you have not a thing that compares and contrasts on the many throwbacks to original Res found in Re7. In affect you're missing the connections with the Revelations chapters 1 and excruciatingly missing Chapter 2 that is the only reason why Re7 and 8 relate to anything from the series rather than being standalones. You're missing out on the throwbacks to the original Res in Re7.
Hell, just playing the HD remake of Re1 would have been a major starting part.
The only thing forgivable is that you're clearly a new fan.
But just doesn't make sense that you make the choice to avoid the original series in favor for the piss poor remakes, re2re being a literal cease and desist on a fan made re2 recreation in favor of Capcom losing possible revenue, re3re being the sorriest installment next to the installment that would lead a series to ruin when it originally released while simultaneously spawning two other games cause Capcom didn't know what the fuck to do with a simple formula mix up. And thus we have action happy super spy to absolute lackey normal man thrown into a situation that was only spawned due to She-Wesker trying different variations to the "Live Forever" her creator was trying to achieve who just happens to visit this lady Miranda who's been alive for hundred of years was told of how she was alive, a retcon on some new made up nonsense just like they did when they ruined the resident evil formula for whatever the fuck resident evil 4 was supposed to be. They would even used something they made for original Re4 variants such as the possessed dolls, and the ghost scythe man was forgotten but not the marionettes with the doll chick. Egh.....
I did not care for Ethan at all, and the molded are so bland and uninteresting. Nothing about Ethan was gripping. Instead of more Jake or making Joe Baker the MC witch, in my opinion, with the context of where and who you're righting makes way more sense and is way cooler for the first game and i would have rather been Chris or part of the HWS for 8.
Wait, you can play RE Village in 3rd person?! I have completed it 7 times also on village of shadows difficulty and never knew you can switch to 3rd person! :O
