- In today's Star Wars video, I explain the structure of the Galactic Empire's Government from Legends Expanded Universe. The Empire's had a complex set of agencies who sometimes fought against each other to gain favor from Emperor Palpatine.
Source information from the Star Wars Sourcebook 1989.

This is more of what I want to see from future SW shows, going more into the Empire and how it functioned on a real level.
Agreed.
Agreed 👍 that is why l liked Andor so much
It would be entertaining, but also educational, if not potentially enlightening. Real world politics on just one planet are complex and chaotic. The governing body seeking to impose order is a jungle itself, ironically.
It would be amazing to see how an entire galaxy of thousands of worlds and races, their respective technologies and cultures, and the aspect of space, would try to centralize control in a system more united than feudalism, a confederacy, or an alliance.
Star Wars was awesome when Geroge allowed a few things and some people at Lucasfilm coordinated efforts. Sure there were some issues, and a couple of retcons, but generally nothing so egregious to break canon. Timothy Zahn and those early writes told great stories IN UNIVERSE. West End Games (I miss them SO much) fleshed out the structures well for the roleplaying game. The universe got bigger and did expand, even at the same time of keeping the Skywalker family at the center. What a golden age.
"Enter the bureaucrats, the true rulers of the Republic"-Sheev Palpatine
It's no wonder the Empire fragmented into Warlord states due to how Palpatine structured it and encouraged rivalries between all the higher ranks and different organizations. Without the central hub of that megalomaniac the promise of unlimited power from taking the vacant throne and a desire to settle twenty four years of scores and vendettas the Imperial Civil War was an inevitability.
That's why every iteration of the sith Empire falls when your governmental structure is based around competition rather than cooperation. It's not going to last long.
@@drakeevans3066 it's not so much the competition aspect that's the problem, it's purely basing your entire government on subversion and every selfish trait in the book. A meritocracy can be functional and establish the better aspects of the best rising to the top, the issue with the Sith is that they take that to the extreme and apply it in every situation to a detriment.
@grandadmiralzaarin4962 that's why my favorite sith organization has to be the Brotherhood of darkness. Because they actually put aside their differences and got stuff done.
@@drakeevans3066 for a time, but they were constantly scheming against each other and were pretty much held together by Kaan's will and their victories, every time there was a setback they were ready to go for each other's throats again. It was also clear that while they made headway initially, they were losing the war as they focused too heavily on Ruusan, which led to all the gains elsewhere evaporating as quickly as they'd progressed. Bane did have the right of it by limiting the Sith to just two as that would ensure a consistent increase rather than decrease over time, the problem was that both the Brotherhood and Rule of Two(as well as every Sith Order) were purely made in opposition to the Jedi and for the benefit of the individual Sith, and as a result were never going to produce a stable or reliable government.
@grandadmiralzaarin4962 The fact that Kaan managed to hold them together for over a decade is a testament to his willpower and charisma.
This makes me wonder if Kaan never fell to the dark side and the sith remained fractured and splintered, how would the new sith wars end?
Great stuff. I look forward to the video about COMPNOR, to me it is the most interesting organization in the Imperial power structure after the Imperial Navy.
I have that source book - it was from West End Games (I bought two copies - one as a gaming resource and one for collecting purposes) - it was a great read and very informative and useful if I ever do a non-SW/ST/SG galactic setting - very useful tool for world building.
i always compared the high up in the empire to Chinese/Korean dynasties and their imperial courts, including the odd hats their ministers wore
Gooood
THANK YOU!
Really interesting thank you
You should do a video on the framework of command in the Imperial Army and Stormtrooper Corps. Example: fire team -> squad -> platoon and so on.
Great suggestion, thanks 😊 👍
This is an interesting video.
It sounds like the former Soviet Union given all the beuacracy. No wonder it failed.
Long live the Empire!
Long live the empire!
