  • Did Emperor Palpatine create the Galactic Empire in order to protect the Galaxy from the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion? We answer that question on today's Star Wars Legends lore video.
    Digging deep into Star Wars legends, we're examine the Yuuzhan Vong invasion and the events leading up to it, including Sidious' manipulation of the Jedi and Republic before the Clone Wars, Thrawn, and the Outbound Flight, in order to determine whether Palpatine knew about the Yuuzhan Vong and was trying to build up a force against it.

    Palpatine once told Vader "Would you have us rule over a galaxy of corpses?" Palpatine wanted to rule, not destroy everything, so he would have protected the galaxy. That doesn't make him a good guy though, it was always his plan to rule everyone with an iron fist.

    Did Palpatine think the Vong were a threat: Yes He did. They were an extra galactic threat that nearly took over the star wars galaxy. He would have known this was a possibility when the empire was in charge, and would have taken steps to defeat them.
    Did he create the Empire to protect against the Vong?: Not specifically. He created the Empire to gain ultimate power in the Galaxy and rule everything. Defeating the Vong would have been a secondary goal that happened to align with "keeping his power'. So, I guess technically you could say, but only in so far as it was created to give him near unlimited power.

      Tbf, it doesn't sit right with me that Palpatine would create a ship like the ISD if all he wanted was to keep power, as the rebel strategy, taticus and fleet composition directly counter the ISD, and then to mass produce them to a point where it was in almost every fleet doesn't make sense considering how cunning Palpatine is made out to be, that is unless he believed that their was a genuine need for ship to ship weapon systems, and considering the unknown factors about the yuzhun Vong, would make a great deal of sense to have created the ISD, I also imagine that the tarken doctrine was a cover up to prevent the information on the yuzhun Vong going out, which might cause scepticism and general panic and also allows a justification for increasing the imperial fleet of ISD to counter the Vong.

    • @josephstalin1022
      @josephstalin1022 10 місяців тому +2

      Also would like to add, that Palpatine probably only started to prepare against the Vong after converting the empire, which means that it would generally align with securing his central power, as the Vong were the only real threat

      Don't you think that the clone wars was a strange idea if he wanted to destroy the Yuuzhan Vong. Instead of creating an enemy in order to militarise the republic and allow him to destroy the republic why not provide evidence of the Yuuzhan Vong threat to the republic and use that as the reason to arm the republic. Arguably extra-galactic invaders are a better excuse to produce the clones than the separatists. He could have basically carried out his assentation to power as the emperor but by exchanging a war which weakened the galaxy for one with an actual enemy and there would be no reason why at the end of it he couldn't order 66 the jedi in the final days of the war.

      We can argue about a lot of things considering Palpatine. He was a sociopath, yes. But at the same time, he was a political visionary.
      He wanted to create an empire. Something that the Jedi Order would never stand for and would oppose with all they had. And so, success in transforming Republic into an Empire required elimination of the Jedi. Thus, even if Palpatine was not a Sith, he would still have to destroy the Jedi Order if he wanted an Empire.
      Besides, think of Jar Jar - I know about a Jar Jar the Sith Lord theory, and it's quite plausible, yet... yet on the outside he was an uncanny loser. What does it say about the Republic if a person with such a bad public opinion was allowed to speak with the authority of a senator? Republic "took care of their own" regardless of their competency or lack thereof, resulting in incompetent leaders keeping their seat even if they should have been replaced with someone more competent.
      Republic was a flawed system that was basically a puppet for Jedi theocracy. Being a Jedi master guaranteed a high hierarchical position within the Republic (General Kenobi?). Moreover, Republic was a highly centralized power, which was bad for ruling the Galaxy - it forwarded the interests of core worlds at the expense of outer sectors, which eventually led to a separatist movement.
      Moreover, if we consider non-canon to be valid, blasters were thousands of years old technology. We did not see actual technological advancements which points at Republic being in millenias long stagnation in development. Perhaps it was the Jedi order that wanted it so. Perhaps in technological development they saw a risk of eventual invention of weapons that they would not be able to defend themselves against using force and lightsabers, and thus weapons that would take away all their appearance of invincibility and, through that, their entire political power.
      Now let's see - The Galactic Empire went closer to the people with regional governors having direct authority over matters of their region, which reduced bureaucracy and the time it took for important decisions to be made. Incompetent leaders, both political and military were removed from their position of power, effective immediately ("You have failed me for the last time"). Technological development moved on (the creation of Death Star and its revolutionary super laser). And most of all, nobody was beyond law, unlike Jedi in the Republic (even Darth Vader had to respect the military chain of command - remember that situation when he choked a high ranking fleet officer and were ordered by that officer's superior to stop? "As you wish" - he had no authority over that officer and stood down when reminded of that). Sure, not everyone was happy, but I am quite convinced an average imperial citizen was happier that an average republic citizen.

    When I read Destiny's Wave, this set of quotes stuck out at me:
    "I can't help but wonder how the old Empire would have handled the crisis," Dorja continued. "I hope you will forgive my partisan attitude, but it seems to me that the Emperor would have mobilized his entire armament at the first threat, and dealt with the Yuuzhan Vong in an efficient and expeditious manner, through the use of overwhelming force. Certainly better than Borsk Fey'lya's policy-if I understood it correctly as a policy-of negotiating with the invaders at the same time as he was fighting them, sending signals of weakness to a ruthless enemy who used negotiation only as a cover for further conquests."
    "That's not what the Empire would have done, Commander," Han said. "What the Empire would have done was build a super-colossal Yuuzhan Vong-killing battle machine. They would have called it the Nova Colossus or the Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose. They would have spent billions of credits, employed thousands of contractors and subcontractors, and equipped it with the latest in death-dealing technology. And you know what would have happened? It wouldn't have worked. They'd forget to bolt down a metal plate over an access hatch leading to the main reactors, or some other mistake, and a hotshot enemy pilot would drop a bomb down there and blow the whole thing up. Now that's what the Empire would have done."

    In legends, I believe Palpatine created the empire so he could rule the galaxy how every he wanted and so he could protect his new galaxy. I also believe the rapid militarization of the empire was partly to prepare for the vong, and to maintain his control. What would be the point of conquering the entire galaxy just to let it fall to a powerful foe he knew was coming.

    What people often forget is that the Sith were not evil for evil's sake. They wanted order, like the Jedi, but instead of a peaceful way, they chose to enforce it, and galactic peace worths ANY price, they do ANYTHING in order to impose order.

      Agreed, mate, they are both dogmatic, both lost their original intentions, Jedi became a government agency when they should serve the common good, no matter the sides, the Sith want order, but they just end up causing more. The Sith mocked the Republic for being weak and corrupt when in fact they were the biggest cause of said weakness and corruption, if they truly want order, they could have just strengthened the Republic, and killed off the corrupt elements, there would be order. I could go on, they are both paradoxical, and they don't know it. Also I think the dark side does not corrupt, obsessions do, and as we know, obsession is mania, they don't go insane because of the dark side, they use the dark side because they are insane, it just comes naturally to them, their bodies get twisted since they use their power irrespocibly, and therefor improperly. If the force is the life energy and the will of the universe, it's neither good nor evil, it does what it does, and doesn't give a fuck about morality. Mostly constructive, but it's not benevolent, and it destroys without hesitation when it is needed, and these blind morons are just its tools, if both orders understood the force correctly, they'd be psychologically ordinary, not emotionless, not bastards, not saints, just people, and they both be in the same damn order.

    • @HalfDemonInuyasha

      And this is why ones like Luke, Kyle Katarn, Corran Horn, and other later on, who have experienced or even mastered both the "Light" *AND* "Dark" Side of the Force actually end up becoming much stronger as a result - having a much greater understanding and responsibility. Even if one tries to separate "Light" and "Dark", it's still *ALL* the Force. As said, it's how one uses the Force that gets one labeled one or the other, but they easily overlook the fact that one can still use Jedi teachings or abilities to kill others or use Sith teachings or abilities to protect others. There are no ironclad "rules" about anything.
      It's also why one can easily look at the Jedi and Sith as similar to religious cults in real life. I mean, saying Luke was too old to start training seemed understandable as he was in his twenties, but seeing Anakin at *NINE* also being called "too old", as well as seeing Yoda's class being so much younger, talking in sync with each other and such...yeah...pretty clear that the Jedi want them so young because they're easier to control and mold into how they want them to be whereas someone even as young as Anakin, besides having already formed attachments and such, would be at that age already where he would be doing something that religions, cults, etc. absolutely fear and hate (lol) - ask logical questions that they can't answer, at least not in any sort of satisfying way.
      You even see this early in Episode II, when Anakin asks Obi-Wan, "Why?", and you see that look of shock and disbelief on Obi-Wan's face. Or the times Anakin seeks advice, he never truly gets answers, but fancy wordplay that essentially translates into repeating the usual teachings, like when he talks to Yoda about his dreams and Yoda pretty much just telling him the usual, "Let go", lines.

    I think that Palpatine very much saw the Vong as a threat to the galaxy. However, his primary motivation for creating the empire was to have the Sith rule the galaxy again. The Vong, were an opportunity that he could have used to justify his actions and possibly stop most rebellion. But he was an idiot and told very few people about them. I liked the analysis, keep up the good work.

    • @braysonlilburn2296
      @braysonlilburn2296 6 років тому +100

      The Office of Naval Intelligence created the Spartans for dealing with insurectionest's and to quell rebellions on entire planets, the covenant were just a convenient excuse to make them public.
      and the good doctor was just an ONI fall guy, she sadly took the fall when public outcry began once it was revealed how spartan 2s and 3s were made. Even though she was just following orders, she still was forced to take the fall because ONI didn't want the backlash tied to them.
      and there is a good quote from one of the vong leaders, i dont remember the book l or the exact quote, but basically he said the vong had been watching the galaxy for awhile and had been waiting for the perfect moment to attack, had the empire won against the rebels they would have not attacked, and gone around the galaxy to find another one.

    • @maxpower3990
      @maxpower3990 6 років тому +42

      The Brennan the Death Star wasn't a weapon designed to destroy Rebel fleets, it was designed to strike terror in the hearts of planetary populations so they would never think of rebelling. If the Rebels captured any planet or any planet revolted then the Death Star could come alone and destroy it. That was why Tarkin used Alderann as a target so that every person in the galaxy would see it and be afraid. When Leia told him that the Rebel base was on Dantoine he replied it was "to remote for a weapons test".
      There are two ways to have power over someone. The first is to convince them it will benefit them with peace, prosperity and laws, the other is to threaten them with pain and death. The first is used by democracies, the other by dictators and rapists.

    Yes to both, but it wasnt his interest to protect "the galaxy" but "his galaxy". Nobody who would want to protect a galaxy against an invasion would opt to turn one civil war he engineered into another he inspired in that pursuit. Exhausting the resources and morale of the galaxy doesnt seem like the smartest method of fighting an invasion not does placing yourself in the bullseye of the rebellion and Jedi remnants put you in a position to safely prepare for an invasion.

    If say it’s both. Created an empire to establish his power within his own galaxy, and to protect his power from invaders from foreign galaxies. Palpatine wanted power above all else, and the creation of the empire was the most effective way to do that against all possible issues. Best way to fight insurrectionists, best way to inspire fear and compliance, best way to defend against foreign threats.

    Ever since I first read Outbound Flight I never truly thought Palpatine created the Empire and built up its massive Navy for the betterment of the Galaxy against the Vong tbh. And the Empire that he created was as you said Eck "Rotton to the core." So if it really was for the betterment of the Galaxy then why did he create such a Tyrannical and corrupt one? For the second question I don't think that Palpatine saw the Vong as a threat, for as perfectly shown in ROTJ he can get a little cocky and overconfident at times. So he probably thought that if they were to come he would just as he put it "Wipe them out, all of them." But anyway that's just my two cents, loved this video Eck and can't wait for the next one!!! :)

    Palpatine definitely recognized the Yuuzhan Vong as a threat but not one that was significant. It's like studying for a hard test, regardless of how hard it is if you prepare for it, it isn't actually hard. The same for the Vong.
    Palpatine would've made the Empire regardless of the Vong threat, however here is the difference I'd argue. Due to the threat of the Vong, Palpatine over compensated the militarization of the Empire in preparation. Prior to the Empire he was a competent and well liked civil servant, otherwise the galaxy as a whole wouldn't have gone for the "I'm Emperor now". In fact for that to work he must've been damn amazing and loved to unite thousands of governments into an empire. This suggests that despite being a megalomaniac he could understand what is necessary to rule efficiently. I'd say the military power of the empire was far greater than necessary to maintain sufficient force projection throughout the galaxy.
    Efficient would've been solely force projection and response for a largely unchallenged empire. Instead the Empire was ready to go toe to toe against literally most other series universes as shown in your other videos, and this was prior to the rebellion gaining steam. Now if you were to see any government just start pumping out warships and militarizing for no apparent reason and you were able to say "wtf are you doing, stop", you would. Hence why it was necessary to force control over his empire past what was effective. Limiting freedoms, speech, press and anything else. I'm not saying he lost sleep over this, just that it was necessary for development of a military force with no perceived threat otherwise he could've asserted his influence without limiting those freedoms resulting in both his dominant empire and a stable culture preventing rebellion, which is Palpatine would recognize as detrimental to his rule, not necessarily threatening though. There is no way he could've justified militarization, so make it so no one can question it instead. Saying, aliens are invading our galaxy would've been pretty damn short trip to, "we just voted a nut into emperor lets take that back", or "our leader is insane, I can rule better than him."
    By no means is Palpatine good or looking out for the galaxy for the good of it, but that isn't necessarily a required trait either. If the Vong were not a threat or known Palpatine would've gone through other methods of asserting his dominance than large scale war machines that would've been more effective for controlling a varied and widespread galactic community and productive for the Empire as a whole. He may have still eventually minimized non-human influence and reduced individual freedoms but in a less dramatic style that wouldn't have drawn significant attention over decades or centuries since Palpatine may have been able to far outlive a normal life span.
    I'd say it could be argued his pro-human agenda and limiting freedom in fact could be solely due to keeping traction on the militarization. Scapegoating, requiring cheap labor, stopping dissent, and producing a culture that would support a militarized system for a prolonged war effort. I don't know if Palpatine would've known exactly when the Vong would've arrived either. Maybe he thought they could show up in overwhelming force next weekend or maybe he knew the exact moment they would've arrived.

    Not enough of a Star Wars fan to know of these works first hand, but I think the answer to both questions is demonstrated by the fact that at no point (at least prior do achieving total control) did he show his power to see such things and noise about the coming invasion. He kept both his connection to the Force and the Vong threat quite only known by an inner circle. Such a threat would (I'd think) be a much more powerful force to consolidate power and build up the military than trying to play puppet master and orchestrate a pointless civil war.
    Had Palpatine seen the Yuuzhan Vong as a serious threat they would have been much more known among the fleet commanders and created an additional sense of urgency to wrap up the rebellion, possibly to the point of it not mattering who won so long as it was won soon so preparations could be more properly made.
    If it was a major factor in forming the Empire not only would I expect him to make it known, but the war droid factories would have been left intact and the Jedi Order would have been extracted from political power, but looped in on the knowledge and left functioning as a quasi-military force (perhaps as a frontline force so that Palpatine could have them wiped out while playing them up as martyrs to further win public support).

  • @daswordofgork9823

    For the Jedi being the greatest assets against the Vong would be very difficult to say. The Jedi could really not do anything to the Vong warriors period. Their force powers could not do anything to the Vong, unless you have force lightning. (Which only Mace Windu and the Sith could do). Also, lightsabers could not even hurt the Vong due their armor and weapons being immune to lightsaber blows and blaster fire. So yeah them being magical, kung fu, ninja gods could not save them from the Vong entirely and would probably been used as expensive ampistaff fodder, (Proven in legends during the Vong War). Hence it is better to have a large fleet, infantry and tanks to fight against a force that relies heavily on a warrior caste system. Mainly because it is faster and productive in war to have a ton of semi trained solders than a society that produces good quality warriors which takes an even longer time. If you look at the Empire units in legends, they happen to be very effective against Vong units. Mainly looking on the ground units because their fleet can easily counter the Vong.
    Examples:
    Dark Troopers, could engage in melee while the storm troopers are shooting at both of them (Vong and Dark Trooper Mark 1) without repercussions. I mean droids after all and the Vong hate them.
    Dark Adepts, Sith Assassins, and Legends Inquisitors: Could learn destructive force powers that can affect the Vong (Probably not Force Lightning as that could threaten Palpatine himself). It is stuff that cannot be used by Jedi as they are too much on the good side of the force.
    Dialogue on the AT-AT level in the game, Empire at War, when Palpatine comments at the end of the level. Saying that there will still be a need even after the Death Star's construction.
    501st: Now clones in general were explained in Battlefront II (the good one!!!!!!) as to why they were not used except for this Legion, but if the Vong invaded and Palpatine needed better quality soldiers, he could produce more of them but in a smaller amount making elite units. (Not exactly Super Sith but still better than the Storm Troopers who keep on missing).

      I'd like to address a few points here, although I agree with some of what you said.
      Yes, the Jedi can't sense Vong intents or push em around with the Force, but remember they were still extremely capable with heightened endurance, reactions, senses, strength and so on. They were still proficient at parrying thud/razor bugs and going lightsaber vs. ampistaff with a Vong warrior, usually getting the better of 1v1s and such, even to the point where Luke and the Solo twins fought a bunch of Slayers (elite shaped warriors) and defeated them despite being outnumbered. Vong armour was very good, but was not immune to blasters and particularly not against lightsabers.
      Secondly, as the war dragged on, the Jedi started getting better at the Jedi meld, which not only helped themselves fight as a unit, but also increased the proficiency of allied forces. This was of particular help at space battles, such as at Obroa-skai and Ebaq Nine, both of which were decisive victories for the New Republic.
      Also, the Vong hated the Jedi, something that was abused from time to time, and thus the Jedi could be considered useful for that reason alone.
      I do agree that Imperial assets would have done well against the Vong, particularly ships like the Imperial-II class Star Destroyer, which had a large number of turbolasers - the more shots going out at enemy ships, the worse dovin basals perform.

      I disagree with the point about the warrior caste. Warrior caste units that take long times to produce arent actually necessarily less numerous than regular soldiers for a given population amount and dont actually take longer. Either way you take just as long for them to grow up, the difference is just that you're training the warrior caste the entire time while your only training the soldier some of that time. The star wars galaxy had an overwhelming numerical advantage just because theres alot more humans than vong, not because warrior caste systems "take too long" or because their soldiers are "faster and more productive".

    3. This explains why he tried to build the Death Star again even though he knew it wouldn't work.
    4. He had an entire plan for the full Imperial fleet before the battle of yavin that never happen because of the rebels that would consist of the 1st Death Star, 24 super star destroyers and 15,000 Imperial 2 class star destroyers.

    I'd like to think the Death Star was built for the purpose of preparing for the Vong invasion at least. Given the sheer amount of time between the formation of the Empire and the eventual invasion, he'd have been able to build more than just two of them had he not been killed. He'd probably have been able to put out a few more, and that'd likely help against the Vong, as well a way to control the population in the meantime.

    I believe he thought they were a threat. The galaxy in its Republic form, was too weak from all that Jedi vs Sith stuff, and in a disarray. The known galaxy would have been easy prey indeed.
    By having outbound flight destroyed, he bought himself some time to set his plans for galactic domination into play.
    I believe his plans of power was two fold: fulfull his desire to be an all powerful being and have the whole galaxy (most of it) under his control and do what he wants, while also habibg an extremely powerful military, so he can be rrady for the Vong.
    When you think about it, the Death Star was indeed a terror weapon, Palpatine liked Tarkin's Doctrine of Fear mostly likely because it would on paper, since it could theoretically keep people being too afraid to challenge him, so he was the only world order.
    If the Doctrine amd plan worked, I bet he would have indeed had time to make the other super weapons amd be best prepared for the Vong.
    It was even said in "legends", that the New Republic wished they hadn't destroyed the Galaxy gun for example, becausw it would have made destroying the vong sooooo much easier.

    I'd agree that Palpatine may have known (in Legends) about the Yuuzhan Vong, but truly protecting the galaxy from them was likely not on his mind.
    Especially if one considers the matter of technological progression. If he knew of the Vong and knew when they were coming, you'd want to calculate how long it would take to harness the materials needed and make that expansion in the military shortly before the Vong arrive so that they run into something that is technologically superior than them and can essentially gun them down. However, the Empire began mobilizing and expanding shortly after the Clone Wars ended...
    And while one could say, "but he knew the Vong were coming" they'd need to keep in mind the TIMING of the Vong invasion in relation the establishment of the Empire. The Yuuzhan Vong invaded some 20+ years after the Battle of Yavin, which took place roughly 18 years after the events in Revenge of the Sith. If the Empire was militarizing for the Vong just after the Clone Wars, but the time the Vong invade, much of the equipment is going to be more than 30 years old and will be obsolete. Particularly if other technologies jump greatly in the intervening time. This would then mean that when the Vong invade they wouldn't run into a technologically advanced Empire, but one that was in the midst of updating their tech and fleet, in much the same way the New Republic was in Legends...
    And while weapons like the Death Star I could be dangerous... that DOESN'T mean the Yuuzhan Vong are incapable of hitting that thermal exhaust port...
    Palpatine's actions were more on enhancing his own power and nothing more...
    And while he may have known of the Vong, there is then the question of how could Palpatine sense the Yuuzhan Vong when they do not exist in the Force and thus CANNOT be sensed? And while he makes mention that Vergere knew of them... the Fosh Jedi also seemed to act in their support of the Yuuzhan Vong during the invasion... In this there is the potential that the reason Palpatine knew of them was that through his own shadowy agents and through Vergere, was actually GUIDING them to the Republic/Empire and setting up the war, just he would with the Clone Wars...
    And that assumes that Palpatine truly DID know of them and it wasn't some disgruntled Imperial whining later after the Empire's tyranny got it defeated... and thus made stuff up to try and vindicate him.

    It’s a super fan-ficky idea rooted in people’s misperception that Sith are just emo/goth edgelords. The Sith are evil pure and simple. Their intentions are always sadistically self-serving. Bane wiped most of them out for being too weak to do the terrible things they had to do to enact their vision. If you want moral greyness in Star Wars it’s not hard to find but the Sith are not where to go

    I like the thought of bringing the Yuuzhan Vong into the new saga films...whether in the past (prequel) or the future (sequel). It would bring something truly new to the movies and create a threat within that galaxy so powerful that the Jedi and Sith would have to join forces (though temporary) to eliminate it. This would open up the possibility for the viewers to learn new things about the Sith, through the lense of anit-heroes. Not to mention, countless other fresh and new things for the fandom to witness. This could be so epic...that Shakespearean level stories could be told within this scenario. There's your next trilogy

      Lego Doctor probably because the Senate would take forever to get anything done just like real life. Also he's a sith he wanted power and wasn't expecting rebellion at first.

    • @bent9399
      @bent9399 6 років тому

      What I mean is, if he created the clone army, paired them with the Jedi, and brought the droid armies of the corporations on board, they would easily repel any invaders and Palpatine would unite the galaxy without ripping it apart first; unlike causing a massive war, tearing the galaxy apart, and then slaughtering the Jedi.

    • @Justicar333
      @Justicar333 6 років тому +1

      @Lego Doctor: It wouldn't have worked, the Senate was incapable of fighting an effective war. The old order had to be swept away for a new order to replace it. I don't doubt Palpy felt himself entitled to power for the simple reason he was capable of taking it. But he did clearly seem to consider the Vong something to prepare for and deal with. Even the New Republic wasn't able to deal with the threat, collapsing under the infighting and political strain. Only the new government that rose up afterwards was strong enough to unify the remaining strength of the galaxy and counter attack an overextended and war weary Vong. Likewise the Jedi of the Republic era would have been poorly prepared to deal with the invasion. Used as shock troops early on against the Separatists, this would have met with disaster against the Vong who were separate from the Force. Luke's Jedi met a similar problem, but they were more use to operating in a commando style in small and decentralized groups. Helping keep a decent number alive to adapt new tactics. Still through the war their losses were extremely high. If the Republic had tried an opening like Genosis against the Vong they would have lost nearly every Jedi they sent to the planet.

    I think Palpatine acted out of both a desire to protect the greater galaxy, no matter the cost, and a desire to see him at the top of that galaxy. He saw that there was a threat capable of consuming all Galactic life, and he had a more or less altruistic desire to protect those lives, but he felt like he was the only person willing to do what it took and that he inherently deserved power and control over everyone he was trying to “protect.” A similar example of this in fiction is the Spiral King, (and, on a greater scale, the Anti-Spirals), in Gurren Lagann

And this video made me think, why wasn't the DLC the yuuzhan vong? that would've been pretty sweet.

    3 years late to the discussion, however:
    Palpatine was dual purposing here. He wanted the power, he did take the vong seriously, but he probably saw them as the final cement to his power. By defeating them he becomes the beloved dictator. Problem was, they parked it outside and waited for him to overextend his hand with no external threat visible.

  • @papakool-aid5183
    @papakool-aid5183 6 років тому +2

    Palpatine did see the Vong as a threat because as we know the Death Star was made to blow up their giant organic ships at least the 2nd one was I’m not to sure about the first and creating the empire to protect against the Vong wasent his Chief reason but I sure it was close behind his lust for power.

  • @nunouno001

    Honestly this is one of the main reasons why I have never liked the Vong. They are just these ridiculously overpowered one dimensional bad guys that only serve as retconned excuse to legitimate all the horrible crimes of the Empire.
    Outside of the stories that directly involved them, you can easily tell that this was not the intention for the Star Wars EU(at least in the early years).

    • @ironinquisitor3656
      @ironinquisitor3656 6 років тому +1

      "One dimensional?" their culture is actually quite fascinating as it is scary. I don't think Palpatine wanted to protect the galaxy from the Vong. He wanted to protect himself and his own power from the Vong. He didn't care about the well being of the galaxy, only his own ego and power.

    I reckon that Palps was definitely motivated by a desire for power above all else and likely would have turned the Republic into the Empire anyway, but I do think that the death star and the designs of the Empire's warships may have been to defend against the Yuuzhan Vong. The Imperial navy was arguably far more suited to combating the Yuuzhan Vong's technologies than any localised threat like the Rebellion.

  • @Fritzgar

    Palpatines goal was building a sith-kingdom for him, but after he did many things he did seem to be more to fight the yuuzhan vong than rebells.
    I mean building a fleet that was on the one hand already completely superior in all big battleship-fights but is nearly useless against the rebells...
