    A comparison that I've wanted to talk about for a very long time, and one that I'm sure is already known to most fans of the show. However, there's lots to talk about here, and SO much evidence that shows how similar they are as characters! The way they react to problems, blame others, and lash out are one in the same, and even have alike ties to their upbringings.
    I think it's great that this show has painted these two as destined to have a final conflict since the very first season, and I can't wait to see that come to fruition (and it better in this final season, honestly). I mean, there's a reason why they were able to work together at the end of season 3 for a second, and it's because they both want that bloody, violent finale, as they discussed at the start of the season.
    And also: my longest essay ever! Like...by far. Proud of it too! Some people on UA-cam have asked for longer videos so- consider this a wish granted, and I plan to do more about other shows, ofc ;)

    GREAT point that Butcher needs to lean on other people for his conscience.

    It's interesting that Homelander was cruel through narcissistic aloofness, Butcher was cruel through sadistic joy

    • @AleTitan
      @AleTitan 21 день тому +4

      what about what he did to Becka? that was sadistic
      To explain, he became enraged that Becka would want to be faithful to her HUMAN, mortal husband. So Homelander wasn't aloof during that event and I'd argue the "sadistic joy" applies to him then, or when he asked that girl to jump to her death.

    One of the things that is soo tragic about Butcher becoming a supe is that he’s seems fully healthy and can use his powers when he gives in to Kesler and chooses violence but is very sick and on the verge of dying when ever chooses do the right thing and believe in Ryan. Kinda feels like he gets to prolong his (said to be shortened) lifespan as long as he goes full menace.

    Thanks for the vid! Strong points!
    I think yes Butcher’s character development shows decline instead of growth by S4. When he was a teen, he didn’t hit his brother on purpose, he lashed out when his brother was trying to stop him and when he realized it was his brother, there was instant regret. His brother was his canary/conscience, and now Hughie is. To me, Butcher isn’t a so much a narcissist as he is unaffected by people seeing him as the villain, he would be that if it meant it got him to rid the world of the evil that hurt him… in exacting his revenge - which he has been consumed by and which drives him. He is a huge cautionary tale to heroes everywhere.
    I love that you mentioned the older sibling thing. They also tend to clash with only children, like Butcher clashes with Annie/Starlight on the things they are similar about but don’t want to see, that they need to consider other people’s perspectives rather than thinking they know best even though they can be so self-sacrificing.

    man butchers childhood hits close to home. the stuff i dealt with was (almost) all mental, but still, it leaves an impact. in both cases, the marks left on your psyche will always last so so much longer than the ones on your body. i hope anyone dealing with that sort of situation can find help, and a better place where you can feel safe and loved and wanted. great video.

    16:00 This scene always gets me, the way he smiles when she says "Sunshine" is such a good addition - I like to imagine that Homelander is telling himself that Madelyn is calling *him* Sunshine, and that's why he smiles.

    In a way I do feel bad for Homelander. Yes, he’s evil. Yes, he’s a psychopath. Yes, he needs to be killed. However what butcher doesn’t, to an extent, homelander has the benefit of pointing out the problem. If it weren’t for the scientist and had he grown up similar to Ryan he most likely wouldn’t be a bloodlustful idol and maybe even genuinely be the superhero. Butcher however DIDNT have that kind of childhood and while his father is awful rather than trying to be something more than his father, especially after seen the result of what that path would like after inadvertently getting his brother killed, he ultimately became the thing he hated. Whether homelander existed or not that doesn’t change the fact that butcher was eventually going to be this God awful person one way or another. Homelanders just the excuse at this point to justify those violent tendencies

    9:34 as the firstborn I’m ngl I can kinda confirm this, I’ve always had difficulty asking for help but I would do anything to help others maybe that’s why when I first watched the boys I loved butcher as a character but just like homelander he has very obvious flaws, I used to say sometimes I have a savior complex because I had a girlfriend at one point who was being emotionally abused by her controlling parents I would’ve let her move in with me if we were adults at the time just to get her away from them. Also once snuck my best friend into the camper I was living in against my parents wishes because he was homeless at the time and had nowhere else to go. It’s good to have a heart that cares deeply for other people but I’ve learned the hard way sometimes either things aren’t as they seem or that you have to watch out for yourself and be smart about it as well

      Ahaha. Yes, they think his a villain, yes they Show in most of the scenes with him. and it is obvious that they are heading towards some kind of repetition of the comic book ending, where the final villain who betrayed and killed boys is Butcher.

    I don't know if I'm overthinking it, but season 5 ending with either one of them winning would make the story "shallow."
    I feel like their arc would benefit from a more "up for interpretation" ending

    • @DivineNaruto
      @DivineNaruto 26 днів тому +6

      No. Up to interpretation would be awful for this story. Homelander and butcher dying have to happen. Hughie IS the main character and this should end with him like it began with him.

    • @teddieprox2307
      @teddieprox2307 26 днів тому

      @DivineNaruto I didn't mean the matter of their deaths being questionable. I meant make butcher just as reprehensible as homelander or make butcher lose even more than he has so when he "wins" it feels empty.
      am I making sense ?

    • @TheLithp
      @TheLithp 4 дні тому +1

      Disagree on the "up to interpretation" thing, but I keep saying a lot of people are in for a rude awakening if they think Butcher is going to be rewarded with some triumphant victory of Homelander. They literally turned him into a giant tumor, but so many fans still don't understand the point they're making with Butcher. But this video? This person gets it.

  • @DomyTheMad420

    6:40 i think it's extremely insulting to say he went more backwards then forward.
    His father never even bothered to move forward, considering the actions required to be signs of weakness.
    Sure Butcher may have faltered and fell, but he goddamn tried.
    and that alone puts him miles ahead of his old man.
    In that sense he's already moved FAR forward
    so saying he's moved back more then forward is insulting.
    it implies he's no better then his p.o.s. father
