    "I'm glad my mom died" Is a MUST read for anyone even remotely interested in the dark side of Hollywood. I can highly recommend the audio book on Audible. Its read by Jennette herself which just adds so much more than just reading it by yourself. I have genuinely re-listened to this book like 7 times by now. Its one of the best autobiographies ive ever read.

      Add in "Counting the Cost" by Jill Duggar for a look behind the reality TV kid, and "Pageboy" by Elliot Paige for a look at Hollywood from a queer/trans perspective and you've got a trifecta of memoirs that will make you feel like getting famous is a bit cursed.

    Something I just wanted to add since I was so early, part of why Bojack is such a jerk toward everyone is because he believes that everybody else is doing exactly what he is doing/what he would do in situations. He doesn't truly trust Princess Caroline because he wouldn't put up with his own attitude and so he can't believe that she would.

    Something just occurred to me, Sarah Lynn says "this house isn't me", referring to her mansion, when they're in the hotel, Bojack even made a comment on it, "We're not at your house." She didnt know where she was.
    Paramedics ask you a few things to assess your clarity, and "Do you know where you are" is one of them. Ive done many opiates in my life but never so many that I didnt have at least a foggy idea about where I was. Coupled with her having a sense of impending doom, makes me think she was already dying in the hotel and that was the point of no return :(

    I had a parasocial thing with this musician who I admired so greatly, and it’s embarrassing to admit how much I doted over them. I listened to all of their songs, donated on their streams, left positive comments, and just felt so much happiness to be part of their world.
    And then it came out that they had done something bad. They never responded to the allegations and disappeared. It forced me to reevaluate: why had I put them on such a high pedestal? Why did I crave their validation by stating how much I loved their music? They are a person after all. A person I don't and never actually knew.
    I still listen to their music, even though they aren’t making it anymore, because it still makes me happy. But now there's a firmer boundary with it, and I've done my best not to parasocialize other musicians I admire. I’ll try not to give myself to someone I don’t know again.

      Based on my own experiences, you can't really fall in love with someone you've never met. Instead your mind conjures up an idealized version of this person based on what you like about them or have heard about in the media; the celebrity may be real, but whom you're idolizing is a fictional character, made up by you. That's why they always say "Never meet your heroes" even if they turn out to be decent people; cause reality can't hold a candle to our imagination, and is often disappointing.

Especially in a situation like that where he very well might've been the only person who "cared" (manipulative grooming is still care in the eyes of a love starved child) about her in her entire life. Genuinely. We never see a single healthy support in her entire life. That was probably the closest thing to love sarah lynn ever felt, and its one of the most horrific crimes a person can endure.

      The fact that Sarah Lynn's mom and stepfather got five million dollars in a settlement against Bojack for his direct role in her death is somewhat bittersweet, given that they cared enough to press charges and got closure as opposed to just dismissing it entirely, but this essentially means her mom and stepfather got off scott-free for all they've done, and will most likely never face any repercussions. With the "real happiness" thing, i don't being "happy" is just a matter of facing the bad days.
    I used to want to be happy more than anything else. I was even told that happiness wasn't real, and I should give up on it. But I was confident that once I was "happy", I wouldn't be suicidal.
    It sounds like a recipe for disaster. But here's the thing: I was right. I'm happy now, and it's everything I ever wanted it to be and more. I couldn't feel, before. I was emotionally and physically numb due to a prolonged eating disorder and alexithymia. I continually existed in a state of numbness, broken up with bouts of despair. I was well aware that my life could be perfect and I still wouldn't feel happy, because my brain chemistry wouldn't allow me to feel the emotion at all.
    I cried the first time in my life I felt actually happy. I never felt suicidal again. I even appreciate the bad emotions. Just regular sadness kinda makes me happy in a strange way, because it was never accessible for me before.
    For me, happiness means a life that I'm capable of joy at all.

    the great points you make about Sarah Lynn and her stepdad inspired the following infodump (sorry for the ramblings): Sarah Lynn's stepdad is not only very likely inspired by celebrity photographer and sexual predator Terry Richardson (based on his profession, appearance and the abuse implications alone), but in fact moreso than just inspired by him, the stepdad probably IS supposed to be Terry Richardson HIMSELF in the Bojackverse. The bear stepdad's last name is "Richardson": Sarah Lynn (née Himmelfarb)'s mom is named Carol Himmelfarb-Richardson, and although Mr. Richardson's first name could be anything (including Terry), we know the show's penchant for taking a real celebrity, finding a simple animal-based pun on their name, and then depicting them as that animal, so i think it's very likely that the bear's name is... Beary Richardson. the last, most meaningful, and most heartbreaking in the show's long line of unstated or unfinished puns. now if this is true, "Bearry" Richardson would not only be a celebrity photographer, he would be a celebrity himself. or as Katrina would put it: no, not a celebrity-dash-photographer. a celebrity / SLASH / photographer. the real Terry Richardson was a god of fashion photography. models called him "Uncle Terry" (again, red flag?!?) and it was this reverence and power which allowed him to exploit many many young models for decades. (the horrible details are all available online, i won't go too in depth but stop reading if this subject is triggering to you) Terry was known for work involving models who either were underage or looked underage, either nude or very scantily dressed, in aggressively sexual, often degrading situations and aesthetics usually drawn from porn or fetishes (this was seen as edgy and cool in the "heroin chic" era). a lot of his sexual exploitation (read: assaults) of his models would be DURING his shoots, often involving his assistants watching, sometimes even taking photos of the abuse FOR THE SHOOT, and even using the photos in his work, putting them in BOOKS and MUSEUM EXHIBITS. these models, many of them either literal children or just out of childhood, likely usually felt no ability to say no due to pressure from their agencies and the industry about what an amazing chance it was to work with Terry. so Sarah Lynn's mom Carol Himmelfarb would almost certainly only be with "Beary" Richardson because he would grant her, and especially Sarah Lynn, access to a higher level of fame and celebrity access. we know "Beary" homeschooled Sarah Lynn--not her mother, not both of them, but she says specifically "My mom's boyfriend homeschools me" in the flashback in the Herb's funeral episode. So we can not only draw conclusions from what must have happened during those long hours of being "taught" by her step-dad every day, both in terms of the abuse she suffered and also in terms of how whatever other actual education she may have been receiving would just have been "Beary" moulding her to be a certain kind of person, a certain kind of star. But we can also gather that, since as you say we never see Sarah Lynn's mom having a job, but she's still mentioned as not at all as part of the homeschooling, this implies Carol was intentionally leaving them alone, leaving the room or even the house altogether, to allow her very young daughter to be alone with "Beary", presumably almost all day, almost every day, for almost all of her childhood. Either because Carol was just incredibly negligent and really didn't notice or suspect that anything wrong was happening, OR, like those creepy parents in the park Bojack meets when he thinks their son is Todd, it may be that Sarah Lynn's mother knew "Beary" had a potentially inappropriate interest in her child, and intentionally let that potential abuse happen, every day for years, just to make Sarah Lynn a star and make them all tons of money.
    now, on the subject of molding Sarah Lynn into a star: the real Terry Richardson also started directing music videos for world famous acts around the late 90s early 2000s, i.e. right around the time Sarah Lynn became a pop star and reinvents herself with her "no longer a little kid teenybopper, now i'm a mature super sexy girl, but also still very young" image and releases her Prickly Muffin video, which is uncannily similar to the 2013 "Wrecking Ball" video released by Miley Cyrus one year before that episode premiered, which was also a big part of Miley's era of reinventing her image along similar lines. and who directed the Wrecking Ball video which had naked 20-year-old Miley Cyrus? you guessed it, TERRY RICHARDSON. and ALSO two years before that episode premiered, Terry Richardson directed another video for 20-year-old pop star Sky Ferreira, which also had her in very skimpy underwear, and which was also seen as an attempt to distance herself from an earlier, innocent teenager image into an edgy, adult, sexualized image. i'm not saying there's anything wrong about singers doing that, they can expressing their bodies and sexualities however they want to and indeed the industry sort of forces female singers to do that at a point regardless. but it does seem very interesting that Terry Richardson did this twice, with two 20-year old female pop stars, within the 2 years prior to the "Prickly Muffin" episode coming out, where we see Sarah Lynn doing the exact same thing at roughly the same age, and by the start of the second season they're setting up that her stepdad is Bear Terry Richardson. maybe they hadn't come up with the Terry Richardson thing in Sarah Lynn's backstory yet back when they came up with the Prickly Muffin stuff in season 1, and sure there's no shortage of singers who did exactly that kind of thing in the 90s and 2000s with no involvement from Richardson needed. and the Prickly Muffin episode clearly shows David LaChapelle was the one who directed the "Prickly Muffin" music video. but it seems very likely that, if the stepdad literally is "Beary" Richardson, that he would've had plenty of influence on Sarah Lynn's image and possibly directed many of her music videos himself.
    now the real Terry was able to get away with his abuse for years because his coercion and the power differential allowed him to claim everything he did was consensual, even putting it up in galleries. and the sad truth is likely many of his models for decades were gaslit into believing it wasn't sexual assault and that they let it happen and because it was just what everyone around did for Terry, or let it happen for Terry. so Sarah Lynn likely grew up not only feeling like she could stop or even really question the abuse she was receiving from "Beary", but that might have been because she was also surrounded by other girls and women "Beary" was also taking advantage of, mostly professional actresses, musicians and models, and that's just what everyone around them was allowing to happen. also, even though real Terry Richardson's history of abuse, like Weinstein, had been an open secret for decades, he was still very successful and working with and hobnobbing with the biggest stars for several years after his victims had started suing him around 2014, and it wasn't until 2017 that he got kicked out of all the major fashion lines and magazines during the MeToo era. so even if "Beary" followed his real life counterpart's career timeline, it makes sense that by the time Sarah Lynn got her Oscar in 2016 that "Beary" was still able to go to the Oscars and accept it on her behalf with no issue (also note how sad and distressed Sarah Lynn looks hearing her step-dad asking her to come home; we get only the slightest hints of the storm of emotions that such a moment would bring up in her. merely hearing she won an Oscar fills her with temporary jubilation, but it was THAT moment right after, seeing her step-dad accepting it instead of her and having him look in the camera and speak directly to her, asking her to come "home", back to her "family" like him--it's THAT moment which triggers her spiral about her feelings of alienation, self-hatred and doom). although we see "Beary" again in the last episode on the news playing the role of grieving parent, and that was around 2020-2021, it seems Beary Richardson may have still escaped any consequences for his crimes even into the 2020s in a way his real-life counterpart Terry did not. speaking of "Beary"s alleged grief over Sarah Lynn's death: remember when Bojack saw them at the hospital the night Sarah Lynn died and "Beary"s reassurance to Carol blaming herself was he said "no, it's no one's fault"? he's already shifting blame away from himself, already laying the narrative that no one can be held responsible for what happened to Sarah Lynn, just as Bojack attempted to do way back in episode 3 and then does in a different way much later when people learn about his involvement in her death.

    The paintings in Bojack's dressing room and Herb's office give a lot of subtext to their relationship. Bojack, firstly, only has art of himself whereas Herb only has horse art meaning they both believe the horse to be the only important representation. Herb wrote Horsin' Around FOR Bojack, he writes a family with Bojack as the lead male giving himself a family he can imagine himself in too, this could be us with our adopted children, what bliss. If the art in Herb's office was about the show in general there would be art of the kids and more general branding of the show.
    The way the horses are painted say's a lot about the brief given to the artist that painted them. Bojack had to pose for the painting and I promise you the artist would've told him to take those socks off. The fact that Bojack refuses tells us that he is proud of his body but still has great shame about who he truly is and the things about him he cannot change. With a rippin' bod like that, who is going to be criticising his feet? If they were white socks I'd argue this could be a silly reference to Risky Business but they're black in an effort to make them as camouflaged as possible.
    Herb's are the polar opposite featuring abstract organs and skeletons like he can see the Horse that no one else see's. I'm the only one Bojack can metaphorically strip bare for. Reds and deep blues symbolising the darkness in Bojack and Herb's longing passion for him allowing the bright white of truth to shine forth. Rather than a forced smile like in Bojack's painting, he has the horse facing forward, proudly, with no pretence.

      Worst thing is Jojo Siwa doesn’t realize she had been going through abuse her entire childhood. I recently watched a podcast clip where she was basically defending Abby Lee Miller for teaching her how to have work ethic (or something along the lines). I think she genuinely believes she had to go through all that in order to become successful when in reality success exists without abuse. It’s sad and I feel sorry for her and I understand why she wants her “bad girl era” so bad.

    Sad that this is relevant for the music industry as well. As someone who had an unhealthy parasocial attachment to one direction while growing up; rewatching bojack and now watching this just stings.
    I feel so many parallels to things that Liam did and said before he passed. Harry even did an interview / made a song where he pretty much quoted that you get used up and thrown out, fame is temporary and he’s scared about if his next moves will be enough for him to maintain.
    The substance use, the abuse, the manipulation, everything we didn’t know behind the scenes and now the recent news. Man it just breaks my heart that regular people / kids who simply chased a dream, would have 0 clue where this path would lead them.
    Great essay!

    I need to point out a line of hypocrisy here.
    When discussing Princess Caroline, you criticise her for not truely caring about social issues and only caring about how they affect the careers of herself and her clients.
    Then with Diane, you criticise her for going too hard on social issues (Hank Hippopotamus) when it could affect the career of her husband. You say she should stop speaking publicly about Hank and go home to her husband and work on her marriage.
    Why isn’t Mr Peanutbutter criticised for not caring about the abuse by Hank, and only caring about how this could affect his career?
    Diane has flaws, but of all the characters it’s well established that she genuinely cares deeply about social issues. Yes she can get a bit self-righteous about them, but she is often the only character who doesn’t view social issues through the lens of “what can this do for me and my career”.
    But apparently she should shut up about abusive men and to be a good little wife. It’s fine for her to care about social issues, just not at the expense of her husband’s career. Apparently, it’s fine for Mr Peanutbutter to only care about how such issues affect his career, (but not for Princess Caroline). And apparently it’s fine for Mr Peanutbutter to tell Diane to stop talking about social issues she deeply cares about if it might affect his career.
    Maybe you need to take a look at the standards by which you view female characters, and why such standards don’t apply to male characters. Ironically, such double standards are a hallmark of Hollywoo.

    I’m gonna say the unpopular opinion here:
    This kind of Hollywood culture is why Ashton and Mila made such a huge deal about Danny Masterson being drug free in their statement. It doesn’t mean that Masterson wasn’t capable of doing all the things he’s been accused and convicted of (and likely more), but that if it’s true that he was as against substance abuse as he was, it likely stood out in their Hollywood circles
    He and all the other Scientology types being anti-drug to the point of being anti-medication has shades of upper and middle class ⚪️ women throwing their support behind Prohibition trying to exert control over a substance instead of addressing the systemic issues that are the root of domestic abuse and generational poverty

    The “nodding is the executive version of laughing!” May seem like a way ti make them seem sinister but I did a little bit of theatre and comedy in college. Even at that low level, you don’t laugh at every joke. You might or you might just say “that’s a good joke, that is really funny” when workshopping a joke or a skit. The same is true for anyone who works in comedy over time-what is and isn’t funny, is serious business. This phenomenon is talked about in 30 rock as well as in interviews with any comedian. I didn’t find it sinister at all. The executives were nodding at his set-I saw this as genuinely exciting. If anything it’s a sign that when you do something you love long enough, you lose touch with what you liked about it in the first place. Taking a hobby and making it a job tends to do that. This fact isn’t sinister either-it’s how people decide to cope with this fact that determines if it is sinister or not.

    One thing I feel a lot of people seem to ignore about the end of the show. Specifically the exposing of bojack, is that there was no, "good guy' actually involved there.
    The reporters researched enough to know that while, bojack was responsible for a lot of evil actions, they pinned a lot of things others did on him, just so they could build him up as a bigger catch.
    The biggest one being
    Claiming he groomed sarah lynn: factually false. We as the audience saw bojacks interactions with her growing up. He did not groom her.
    He certainly tried grooming a different girl later, but that's not enough to make a big story.
    So the reporters stacked a crime he didn't commit that any idiot can tell Sarah lynns step dad actually committed, onto him.
    And for what?
    Who benefitted? Sarah lynn?
    The money went to her abusive mother and rapist of a dad.

    • @seeleunit2000
      @seeleunit2000 Місяць тому +1

      Which is another issue that no one talks about. The culpability of the media. And not holding Sara Lynn's parents to account for how she ended up.
      They had a bigger hand than Bojack in her life

    • @KD-ou2np
      @KD-ou2np Місяць тому +2

      I mean... idk he kinda did groom her. He was the reason she first drank, he yelled at her under that table and told her to always chase fame and that people would always try to use her or change her!
      He used her and abused her and dropped her whenever he felt like it. Even if he didn't target her throughout his life. And the way he makes her this very special figure in his mind later in life... talking about they're the only ones who get each other, they have this special connection, how she's like a daughter (before he sleeps with her). It's very much groomer behavior.
      He never tried to protect her or care for her well being he used her to project his fears and feelings onto, used her whenever he needed something, made her fuck off when he didn't. Her certainly groomed her to get used to that treatment.

    • @1slayer959
      @1slayer959 Місяць тому

      @KD-ou2np I never said he was a positive influence in her life. He wasn't, but being a terrible person who used her, is VERY different from a groomer.
      Grooming implies manipulation specifically to get in someones pants. That he didn't do

    • @KD-ou2np
      @KD-ou2np Місяць тому +3

      @1slayer959 Grooming is actually a lot more than that if you look into the psychology of it, and it isn't just about sex although that is the common example we think of. Grooming is about pushing boundaries over time so the person gets used to being treated a certain way by you, so they get used to not having boundaries at all, and let you do whatever you want to them.
      The groomer who does it may not have an end goal explicitly in mind, the main drive of what they do is they manipulate someone over time to allow themselves to be treated however the groomer wants to treat them or use them. Whether through shame, or coercion, or even through "love".
      People who are physically and emotionally abusive groom too. They select people to abuse who they feel won't push back or leave. They set up scenarios that make it difficult to leave. They build a positive relationship with you that involves gifts or affection or compliments while also slowly pushing boundaries and doing more and more things they encourage you to overlook or keep secret. And eventually they put you in bad situations you feel like you have no way to escape from, especially because you may be very emotionally close and tied to them at that point.
      Bojack knew she looked up to him, and loved him and needed him, and he treated her like garbage. And that was the way he liked it, it was comfortable for him.
      Getting fucked up with her like he did was just a way to to let boundaries get slippery. Not to say he planned to sleep with her but... well sad ppl often use drugs and drinking as an excuse to do and say things they wouldn't normally, but want to.

    • @1slayer959
      @1slayer959 Місяць тому

      @KD-ou2np while yes, grooming isn't JUST about sex. My point us that they stuck Sexual grooming of Sarah lynn onto Bojack. Wich is factually false.
      He had no interest in her as a child, nor as an adult. With the no no time, only happening because, he's a pig.
      Does that make it ok? No
      Did he groom her in a non-sexual way? Maybe
      But that's not what was stuck onto him. Because if they ran with the more likey true story that he manipulated sarah lynn to further his own goals and career. That would be easier to dismiss as, "that's just show bizz baby"
      So instead they lied about the nature of his, "grooming" assuming that even happened with Sarah lynn specifically

    I have to disagree strongly with one point; no, I feel people don't worship celebrities as much as they did before, actually the opposite, and it can be seen, in, well, the election (sorry for bringing up politics). Kamala had way more celebrities' endorsement than Trump, it wasn't even close. But it carried little to no importance, and to a certain degree it detached politicians from the common people. So, no, celebrity worship has actually declined, not got worse with the years (not a Trump supporter here).

    You characterize this stagnation and lack of accountability as a fame problem, but it isn’t. Most people cease to grow at whatever age they begin to work in their so called career. The only difference between career and fame is those with fame have “made it”. In a career people always have that carrot at the end of a stick they are chasing. They are easily distracted by the next promotion, project, or item to buy. If people do grow it happens because they meet others outside the system of oppression. Namely, their kids. Celebrities however usually choose fame over children so they remain stuck while “career” people will choose children and grow. It is a disgusting system, but the enemy knows how meaningless people turn to God so it is paramount to keep people busy. You work to eat there is nothing more mundane than that.
