  • This is a test of the 125 gr Simmons Mako, four blade broadhead.
    Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    Mako Total Score: 87.15 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 15.65 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125" = 5.95 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125" = 5.95 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 17.85 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 125 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +75 gram = 8.5/10 = 7.65 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10= 1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 16.57 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.5" = 7.5 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (55 layers=7.07 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 19.58 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (9/10 = 2.7 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: +1 extra forgiving flight
    +.5 extra sharp blades
    Total Mako 125 gr SCORE: 87.15 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price: $15.32/head

    I think this is one of the few times your scoring system did not truly reflect how good the head is. It lost t.5 points on blade sharpness retention, but even at a 200 it is still sharper than most heads out there. Don't get me wrong, your scoring system is far and away the best I have seen! It's as close to perfect as I think you can get! That said it still did loose sharpness and it is an edge retention test. I have been doing a lot of thinking about blade sharpness lately. Is it better to have a head that starts at 200 and stays at 200 through an animal, or would it be better for a head to start out at a 125 but degrade to 200? Not really sure and to be honest not sure it really would matter most of the time? I guess I spend to much time on the tractor thinking about things lol! Great Job as always

      @Guns4570 10 місяців тому

      I have to agree that would be an accurate statement regarding it being dulled to 200 haha. That is sharper that most of the heads he starts with.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  10 місяців тому +3

      I've debated that approach quite a bit. But what I am quantifying is how quickly it can lose its edge...not the sharpness after it goes thru Penetration Test 1. The reason is that every animal is going to be different, and dull the edge differently, so edge retention is a more important thing to measure than final sharpness.

    Narrow ferrule bases kind of suck if you have shafts that are wider. Friction feature. I like broadheads that are carbon steel and sharpenable without special jigs. I have several of the carbon steel Simmons, 160 to 190 grains, and a few that are glue on so you can use different weight screw in adapters and get them up to 240 grains with a 125 gr adapter. Their two blade cutting widths are super wide, some over 1 5/8s. They really don't need the extra blades.

    Wish they’d make this in a single bevel. Would be like a bigger brother to the Kudu contour +. I like the kudu but it’s 1/16” smaller on the main blades and 1/4” smaller on the bleeders. This one would be sick in a single bevel!

    Now that seems like a great head for just about any shooter. Low poundage? One of the sharpest heads to hit the shelf. High speed? Flies great. I do wonder how it would do on a tough shoulder like a moose or big hog though. I think it would do great.

    I shot my Simmons Swampsharks today and they were grouping 1-2" groups with my field points at 30 yards which is the farthest I could shoot in my yard. . I was shocked that I didn't need to make any tuning adjustments! This is from my compound shooting 192 gr solid blade head with a 1 5/8" cut at 270 fps ! Now that I tried it I just do not see the reason to use mechanicals for whitetails again.

  • @michaelrosa5410
    @michaelrosa5410 10 місяців тому

    What is there not to like other than she dulled quick. But with such a high starting sharpness point, you can't complain.
    The hole in steel plate, sort of what I key on for wound channel evidence was top shelf. 1-3/16th outside cut, and a 7/8th bleeder cut is perfect. Could maybe have sharpened the back sides of the blades ? I assume you can add that on yourself when sharpening ?
    Normally these type of heads have tip roll over issues upon hard contact. Not sure if this ferrule is what is helping, but still, I think some actual field testing should show this head's worth.
    Flight was top shelf as was penetration. Truthfully a head worthy of a test drive

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  10 місяців тому +1

      It didn't dull too much--was still sharper than most are out of the package. And 8.5/10 on edge retention for that kind of initial sharpness is pretty good.

    • @rickgoing7027

      You may need to retune. Then again you may not! I screwed on my Swamp Sharks which are 1 5/8" wide and weigh a 192 grains today and they shot within 1-2" groups with my field points and required no tuning. This was after I unscrewed a 100 grain head. So I shot a 92 grain heavier head and my pins set for 100 grain heads had me shooting in the bottom 1/4 of the blue face NFAA white area at 30 yards from a 270fps arrow. My normal speed is 292 fps with the 100 grain head. I see no reason now to shoot mechanicals for whitetails. I have been using this head for my recurve at the suggestion of several very successful trad hunters and they have been flawless!
