- This is a test of the 150 gr Gen 2 Pilot Cut 4 Blade broadhead by Kayuga.
Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
Gen 2 Pilot Cut 150 gr Total Score: 90.08 = 8 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.42 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1 3/16” + 3/4" = 1.94” = 5.43 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.94” = 5.43 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.19" = 3.56 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 19.2 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 200 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 18.21 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8.5" = 8.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
( 60 layers= 7.71 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.75 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 11.4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.5/10 = 4.75 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+1 pts Single Bevel rotation (80 degrees at 13")
+1 pts Extra thick blades (.083")
+.50 pts modularity with different sized bleeders
TOTAL SCORE: 90.08 pts = 10 Golden Arrows
Price: $16.65/head

I used them last year and when I made a hit on the shoulder bone I couldn't believe the bone just shattered to pieces. 8 inches of the bone was devastated! Great broadheads!
Good to hear
Just like Meachanicles😂😂😂 I figured they would perform like that👍
By far the best broadheads test I’ve ever seen please keep this up.
Thank you
Another awesome broadhead and great video!
Thank you
I like that the bleeders have a much less abrupt angle than some bleeder blades. This should help with penetration. Wicked looking broadheads. Thanks for what you do.
Yeah, I really like these heads. Thank you for the encouragement.
I'd definitely give them a try. Thanks for sharing 👍
Good luck.
I've been using these for 18 months, have been impressed love them. Great video. Thanks
Good to hear.
Wow... this is making me rethink everything I thought I knew about life 🤯 I need to try these
:)
Wow!!! What a broadhead for elk!!!
Yep.
Ill tell u what u make it hard to decide on which broadhead to use but in a good way. This may be the next head i use even over my annihilators. im my opinion i think i like these over every other heads you have tested! Thank you for all the help on these videos! top notch!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great cutting edge. Sharp out of box and keeps it sharp edge when tested again 👍
:)
Great broadheads !
Yep
100% great head no doubt about it!
Yep.
These heads are super slick.
Right?
I think I know what I’ll be trying this year Gen2 pilot cut 175 gr with the 1” bleeders idk how you could go wrong with this head 😎👍🏼
This shape/design which includes others like the Helix, is an exceptional design that both penetrates very well, creates a wicked wound and rotates great through flesh.
Yep.
Great review like usual keep up the good work it helps a lot of hunters that are new to the sport or someone that’s been hunting for 20+ years like myself pick more ethical lethal equipment not only to help you be more successful but also respect for the animal knowing it will be a quick honored death
Thank you!
Definitely gonna get some
They’re the real deal. And now I have a discount code: LUSK10 saves 10%
I can't decide between the kayuga or the tuff head evo.... Maybe I should get both
The Kudu style heads just look like a pain in the rear-end to sharpen.
I thought so too until I bought them and the stay sharp guide for it. Really doesn't take much time at all to do.
that is correct
Stay Sharp Guide makes a sharpener for them. It takes some time, but isn't too difficult.
I saw Adam Greentree took an elk this year with one, he thought the bleeders were designed to break off if you hit bone to keep the penetration. Doesn’t look like that’s the case they stayed on through all the testing. What an awesome looking broadhead design.
Yep.
Putting them to the test right now. Haven’t shot a buck or pig yet but they’re shooting better than my sevrs. Shoot about 4” lower than my field points but perfect left and right. They are about 10 grains heavier I think than my fields. What’s blowing me away is the internal rotation these broadheafs have. I have to twist my arrow as I pull it out of the target and it’s turning nearly 360 degrees with about 12” of penetration
YES! Incredible rotation due to that thickness and geometry. They are a bit heavier, but that makes no noticeable flight difference for me out to 50 yds or so.
I just placed the order all together with 8 extra large bleeders 6 heads and shipping cost $185 I wish there was a discount code
Wow...that's quite a bit!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures yes I received them they look and fly perfect and the metal seems and feels exactly like the cutthroats
How much weight in reality do the wide bleeders add over the standard bleeders? Their website states 25 grains which seems high but then per this video the std bleeders were 8 grains heavier than the blank so maybe that’s true. I’m looking for a final 125gr with the wide bleeders so guessing I need to go with the 100gr head and add the wide bleeders for that.
@@bdubs1010 the 125 grains with bleeders comes out to 150gr
I’m based in Australia and these are my choice in broadhead. I’ve recovered 100% of the animals I have shot with these.
Pretty much everyones choice down here
How do you sharpen them?
@@collinslangley361 I prefer the 'old-school' version much easier to sharpen. But a diamond knife steel works on the pilot cut's
@@collinslangley361 I use a Stay Sharp version C guide. There is also a tutorial on their website and UA-cam that shows how to sharpen them with files.
Nice.
THAT'S IT.....I'M BUYING THIS ONE
Lol
:)
Like that head John, your tests are simply the best. Two right shoulder injuries will not allow me to shoot a verticle bow. Would you ever consider tests using a cross bow? Thanks !!
Thank you. I am considering incorporating a crossbow into some of my flight testing in 2024.
Thank you sooo much John.!@@LuskArcheryAdventures
Thank you for the great video. Wondering if you have tested the OCD Brodhead head
Yep...I have a video here on my channel. Just go to UA-cam and Search LUSK then the name of any head you're wondering if I've tested. It was a couple years back.
Wow!!
:)
My kayuga are ready in the cuiber for the season
Nice
Any videos of you sharpening them? Thanks for all your videos
I believe Innovative Outdoorsman has one on their UA-cam Channel. They make Stay Sharp Guide sharpeners.
Really like your input, have you tested tooth of arrow single bevels.
I'm doing that now.
I am going to try the 175 grain that's right with my crossbow 🫡
Those heads are beasts!
great videos, thank you very much. what is you highest rated broadhead? is there a list ? :)
greedings
Thank you. So many good ones. At the end of each year, I post a Broadhead Test Summary and include a summary spreadsheet in the video description. You can find that for 2022; it's always the last video of each year. I will be doing that this year as well.
@@LuskArcheryAdventuresperfect. Thank you so much
Ordered a pack of 150gr from Australia ....even with shiping you get 6 bh. for the same price i would pay buying a us brand and getting 3 bh.
Yep...still a great deal for an excellent broadhead.
Have you seen they're Zot single bevel heads it would interesting to see those tested if you ever get that chance
I tested them a while back. Just search Lusk Zot on UA-cam
@LuskArcheryAdventures I watched it last night after I thought about it haha thank you
I’m curious to how the tooth of the arrow single bevel will fair i haven’t seen any reviews on it yet
I’m testing it now. They had some initial issues with the edges, but are fixing that.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures i knew i could depend on ya
Cool head, but I guess I’m simple because I prefer a straight edge for ease of sharpening. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, that is easier...but this isn't too difficult just the same. The single bevel makes is much easier than a double bevel.
Put a magnet on it and see if it’s magnetic, even some stainless steel has some magnetic properties, but high-quality stainless steel has very little
I think it's HS-13 or something else similar. It's a pretty soft metal, and injection molded.
Well, it's definitely steel. I believe it's a carbon steel coated with teflon.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures love your videos 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦌
400 grade martensitic stainless steel, the Teflon coating is to reduce glare and aid in penetration @@YoureSoVane
400 grade martensitic stainless steel, the Teflon coating is to reduce glare and aid in penetration
I think the heat treat is way to soft .. it will dull fast
Well, it is fairly soft...but then you can see how it held up to sheet metal and concrete...seems good enough :) It's always a hard balance for manufacturers to decide--softer is easier to resharpen; harder is more difficult to resharpen.
Ive shot three animals with them. Two of the three had head failures. Specifically the head breaking off at the ferule.
Were they an older model because he shot through the steel and then the cement block and they didn’t break which is a much harder hit than bone?
Maybe you had a defective batch? Other commenters said they use them and didn’t have that issue.
oh man that is rough, bummer.
What arrows did you use?
That's interesting. I've never seen that...and I've tested them and hunt with them quite a bit. Not sure what caused that.
Does a magnet stick to it?
As they are a 400-grade martensitic stainless steel yes a magnet will stick to it, leave it outside for 6 months and there will be no rust on them either 4 years of trial and error and hundreds of tests later we created the steel we wanted.
Yes.
I wish they came in left bevel.
Ok..
Dudley did a test on flight regarding string spin and fletching helical. It makes no different. Just shoot right angled fletching to match the head and your good to go.
The bleeder is bigger than some broadheads😂😂😂
Haha. True
great videos, thank you very much. what is you highest rated broadhead? is there a list ? :)
greedings
Thank you. I don’t presently have a testing system for arrows.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Sorry i ment for broadheada 🙈 so what is your highes rated broadhead fixed/mechanical. And is there a list? Greedings
