I guide deer hunts in Ohio. I had 2 clients in camp recently using sevr broadheads. I was pumped to see how they worked. Both guys shot deer. I was highly disappointed in that both shots were perfect double lung. 1 deer had no blood trail at all. The other had droplets only. Luckily both both hunters were able to watch the deer run off and they didn’t go more than 60 yards. Both shots were midway up body. 1 was with a ravin xbow other was a new hoyt rx7 at 65lb. I’d like to see a 3 blade sevr come out. I personally shot 2 deer with the Levi Morgan shwacker. Great wound channel, both pass through shots, awesome blood trails. Best advice is shoot what performs best out of your bow. Confidence in your gear is top priority.
Man I just used the 1.75” sevr on a Central TX whitetail and the exit wound is absolutely insane. The head survived just fine and actually was able to sharpen the blade and put it back in quiver. I tried to leave it as a review pic for sevr but couldn’t find how to do that. Arrow was the rip xv at 400gr and 71lb triax.
I shot my whitetail doe a couple days ago with the annihilator and I wasn’t impressed. I had a clean broad side pass through and I had no blood trail. Luckily the doe ran under my stand and then laid down 30 yards away so I was able to watch her. I walked and walked around where I shot her and found one little drop of blood. Where she was laying there wasn’t a pool of blood. It was all internal. The cavity was full of blood. I’ve never had that before.
I'm a big schwacker fan. The last two deer I killed this season ran no more than 20 yards. I have used the same set for years, I just sharpen them up a lil bit on my grinder and throw a new band on.
you're testing the 3 broadheads I've most recently used. (past 5-6 years). I am using the iron will now. Your shot through ballistics gel is a great way to show that penetration through foam/gel does not relate to performance on an animal, as I would be amazed if the two blade mechanics would penetrate more than either of the fixed blades. Has to just be the drag on the blade/shaft or something that has an effect when shooting gel type material.
Was blessed enough to get a buck in NJ over the weekend. Used a SEVR 1.5. Hard quarter away from a tree saddle. Entered about the last rib and exited the opposite armpit. Full pass through. Went about 60 yards. Total weight 465. 125 SEVR 1.5 with mfjj titanium half outs on a black eagle rampage 300 spine
sevrs are 15 a piece. and arguably alot more durable. I've seen shwackers crumble before. They ate too long and have a big groove for the blades, and made out of aluminum. And sevrs won't get deflection like other mecs. because they swivel around bone. Only mecs I will use. But iam going to try the beast broadheads this year.
@michaelbushey2787 glad those work for you and thanks for sharing your experience. 👍 Stick to what works for you, affordable and readily available. Goodluck this coming season!
@@michaelbushey2787 the bowmars have some awful penetration videos on their channel using sevrs. One was a turkey shot on the back that the Sevr actually bounced off......a TURKEY! No one has ever seen a shwacker "crumble"
Yupp. And everyones setup depends on what they should and shouldnt use also big variable. Lower poundage, shorter draw id deff use a good fixed head. Luckily my specs and setup i can kinda get away with any head id want and be fine, at least for whitetail deff
( For Whitetail) I've shot multiple deer with the Sevr. Every one of them had pass throughs, and the entry holes are big enough to put a hand in it. Been using them ever since the first deer down. Tried to use them for elk the last couple years, but haven't got to harvest one yet (maybe this year!) Great mechanical broadhead!
If you take a hairdryer or a heat gun to the outside at distance and lightly heat the ballistic gel it will get rid of the “wrinkles” and make the gel crystal clear just an FYI
Swacker deploys on the rib cage. So it actually deploys really fast on a real animal, dues serious damage as well. Liquefied 1.5 lungs, shot out of a umerex air sabor. I'm pretty sure it made some bone act as shrapnel
I like all these choices maybe don’t stack the ballistics gel. I think the the top block had the advantage since the weight of the block was changing the amount of friction on the bottom. It might not make a difference but I expected the fixed to out perform and I’m a mechanical guy.
you are 100% correct. This has been shown before by putting a lube on the arrow and the broadhead then shooting it into gel. Same 2 arrows one with lube and one without will show an extreme difference in the penetration.
Large single bevel broad heads will always underperform in gel because of the surface area they have and the friction that creates in gel. It does not work the same way in an animal.
I was hoping you were gonna use some hide and stuff in this vid from what you and Josh said on the other review video... damn. Looking forward to seeing those done!
I have been with Muzzy so long its insane. I used a Grim Reaper micro on my elk this year and it performed flawless. I wouldnt say it was any better than my Muzzy 100's.
Do you use the 3 or 4 blades? I have a couple 4 blades that were given to me that I haven't used yet and was wondering if it was worth buying something else or if they're good.
Hey Dan, if your looking for a different alternative medium try a watermelon wrapped with 1/4" plywood with leather/carpet. T-bone mentioned it in a live insta feed with Brandon McDonald that it represents a deer sized cavity the best and I agree. I did mention the watermelon to Tim C. since he was testing arrow penetration based on arrow weight, but I don't know if he plans on doing it. Thanks for creating educational content and ABTing.
Surprised the Hades had least penetration thats pretty crazy….and also thought a 1.75” sevr would definitely penetrate more than a Shwacker 2”….especially due to the awesome tip the Sevrs have on them. Very similar to the Hades tip
Gel doesn't test penetration on arrows well. If he were to spray the shaft and the broadhead with something like cooking spray or oneshot lube you would see what is really being tested is the friction on the arrow and broadhead.
The sevr didn't go as far because the blades open on entry cutting 1.75" the whole time where as the swhacker cut 1" for the first 3" and the then started to open. The swhacker wasn't cutting 2" until halfway thru the gel block.
Killed my first buck this year with a schwacker and the blood trail was insane and thats with only a entry wound. The deer went around 80 yards the shot shot wasnt great but the blood was tremendous.
I'd be curious to see how they perform at distance like 20 to 30 yards, something I doubt anyone wouldn't take and see what they can do after some energy had bled off. Just a thought, good stuff Dan God bless you and yours!
Great lil video bro, really liked having the kids and family in it, I've used schwacker and sevr, liked em both but wasn't getting great penetration so I switched to fixed heads two years ago but still use mechanicals in the crossbow for the kids love both of what you had plus grim reaper whitetail specials and the slick trick mechanical that is like a schwacker forget the name had great with all them except a few broken blades with white tail specials, when them elk hunts dropping bro?
I’m never using an expandable again. The second time a rage blade bent and gave a terrible blood trail. Going to the muzzy one piece head. The tried and true. At 40 yards they fly like a field point for me.
Axis are pretty hardy man. I got one a couple years ago with a rifle. Bullet was lodged in the offside hide. They’re dense for their size. Meat was great. It’ll be a good test for a broadhead for sure.
Any reasoning for going with the 3 blade GR vs. the 4 blade? I really like how the SEVRs fly but I hate having to deal with the rubber band. Have to remove the broadhead to replace it.
I wonder if the difference in penetration is due to the frictional resistance of the broadhead in the Clear ballistics block. Seeing that the 3 blade probably has the most, followed by the Iron will, sevr and Swhacker having the least. Especially, if the swhacker opened up later in the block. I am definitely interested in see your on animal results in the future. Personally, I have always been a little hesitant to use mechanical heads. This is only reinforced by a coworkers son that has lost two deer using Mega meat heads recently. He had good shot placementon both, but found no blood trails after many hours searching. He has now switched to fixed blade. Anyone who has lost a deer knows how sick it makes you feel.
Here's what I can promise ya - I am more confident hunting with a sharp fixed broadhead ... I only want folks to choose whatever gives them the most confidence! -DS
I would like to see some test/opinions on the G5 deadmeat. I shot it into a doe and had crazy blood spraying everywhere. But I think most will do that with a perfect double lung?
I used mega meats with 480 grain arrow was facing away arrow went through rear of ribs out front of shoulder didn't hesitate and hit a small log behind it and bent a blade. Full cut all way through pretty sure it would've hit a rib the way it hit still went through
I keep hearing you talking about entry holes and wound channels. There's a broadhead brand called Flying Arrow Archery; they have one called "Toxic" that is supposed to cut out what they call "cores" but the idea is that it basically cuts out a cylindrical like wound channel immediately from entry. I'd love to see how you think that compares especially since it's been designed to do exactly what you're looking for.
I don't think it's was a coincidence that the arrows penitrated less and less the lower they hit into the gel block, I think you need to switch them around, the one you shot into the bottom of the gel needs to shot first and into the top of the gel and so on. Ether way man I love your work.
Are you fletched left or right twist on your arrow? My Swhacker #269's have a a right right bevel. Not sure how much of a difference it will make on game.
VPA solid 3 blade i have also and is a really really good head. Very affordable for what you get but they are more finicky than the Hades design when tuning for flight ive found. Makes sense, more surface area. But even just at 40 with a perfect bullet hole thru paper they hit way diffeent than Hades pro. They also make a new 2 blade solid single bevel and a solid 2 blade double bevel. Very good materials made in the US.
@@ElkShape awesome to hear. They manufacture a lot of different brands heads for them, VPA is just not nearly as big with their marketing but out of the package things were impressiveee. Love all your content especially the really nerdy deep dive stuff. I would love to see aj in depth video of how you sight in multi pin slider sight and select sight tape. Everything start to finish. I tend to confuse myself getting everything dialed
My go to mech is the G5 deadmeat V2 and go to fixed is the IW SB. Great results with both. Never shot one with a sevr. Hard pass on schwacker. Absolutely drilled one through both lungs on a buck 2 seasons ago. Perfect broadside shot and complete pass. Arrow soaked in ling blood. Deer died about 1-150yds away but only from a grid search as there was hardly any bloodtrail at all. Glad it got the job done ultimately but beyond disappointed with the blood trail. Doubt i will use one again..never had such a weak trail on such a great shot before.
I use both those mechanicals, just went to SEVR last yr. But then with all the @you have to use fixed” on elk, I bought Exodus and Slick Trick (yet to shoot).
Don’t be scared of the 1.5 sevr on elk. I shot a spike at 63 yards quartered away, complete pass through with insane blood trail for all of 40 yards he made it
Was it the Levi Morgan swhacker? Because his is different and you should show how sharp they are before and after , because the sharpness in the animal matters a lot , every time you shoot into gel it changes the consistency of the gel , there not a good test, I know cause I’m retired and watch a lot of broad head reviews lol
I'm not retired and I also check out a lot of broad head reviews, they are fun to see. I hope we can cook up a legit test down the road! Thanks for watching! -DS
To do this test "Properly" there should be some type of simulated hyde on the surface point as you eluded to at the end of the video. A scapula or similar in the gel would also be beneficial. Even so, good video
So how can a 2 inch mechanical out penetrate 1 1/8 inch cut on contact?? I think ya get so much shaft drag with gel it doesn't correspond with what happens in the real world. Inside a critter is viscous and lubricating i think gel is exactly opposite.. maybe not . Im just a dumb hillbilly so take everything i said with a grain of salt. Love the show have a great day bro✌️
Agree.. I get the same basic results when I shoot diff BH's into my foam targets as well.. they all penetrate w/in a inch of each other.. Brand or style don't really seem to effect much, mostly IMO because the Gel and Foam are designed to pretty much stop whatever and friction is the reason.. Live animals, there isn't nearly the amount of friction IMO.. These gel tests are really a poor representation of what ppl who use them are trying to accomplish.
I have a 1minute video of a pa whitetail shot with a shwacker. It shows an inlet hole thru hide, inside ribcage, lungs, and exit hole. Straight pass thru at 25 yds. How do I send it to you? It's 5.3k 60fps.
👀 look at the thorn XV mechanical broad heads. Good design like to see you test them. I’d be willing to send you a pack if you’re willing to put them in a video. I’m not sponsored by anyone just a fan of the channel
@@chrishanlon6550 I tried Thorn crossbow series 3 years ago and got to shoot three whitetail bucks with them. Only one of them fully opened, all three were damaged beyond repair (bent like a boomerang), and no blood trail on any of the deer. Two shots were complete pass through, double lung shots….arrows laying on top of the ground a few feet past point of impact. The third one was facing me so I shot him in the center of the chest, the arrow came to a stop at the hip knuckle….this buck dropped in his tracks. The other two were a bit difficult to find, but thankfully my wife brought the dogs up and we were able to recover them. I contacted Thorn and they finally decided to send me replacements…. But they didn’t send the same ones I purchased originally, the 125gr crossbow series…they sent the 100gr standard series. I tried to get them to let me swap them for the same ones I bought from them but they ignore all of my emails, texts, and phone calls. I threw the ones they sent in the trash where they belong….they were the most expensive paperweights I’ve ever bought. I’ll never buy another Thorn broadhead, even if they dropped the price to a $1 bill per pack. I truly hope that you had better results than I did, hopefully they work great for you. Good luck in the upcoming season!
Swhacker for tree stand whitetail, IW with bleeders on western big game. If you put any of them where they’re supposed to go, you shouldn’t have an issue.
May catch some heat but…. How far were you? Think you said 6 feet. How many shots are at 6 feet? What would you say would an average or a long shot? I would like to see what the results would be at a hunting distance vs a shot that vast majority of hunters will ever shoot. I can appreciate what you’re trying to show on the damage. I love my schwacker and am looking forward to getting a single bevel. My guess is you’ll be testing heavy Vs light arrow penetration in the ballistic gel. That would be best at distance also instead of 6 feet.
Unfortunately Gel only tests the friction exerted on the arrow shaft and the broadhead. This isn't useful at all for penetration and it is obvious since all of these penetrated to nearly the exact same depth.
I know the sevrs are supposed to be the “best” but, the results I’ve had with the 1.75’s have been underwhelming. Killed the deer but, I was expecting a rage-type cut and it definitely was not. Blades were chewed up and bent. Just not what I expected. The blunt little wing blades have to hurt penetration too…swhackers in the quiver to try next.
Great job Dan. I shot a buck yesterday morning quartering to me at 17 yards and hit right above the shoulder socket. Going to skin the deer in the morning (have access to a walk in cooler) broad head is in off side shoulder, G5 dead meat. This is the second deer with it, first deer compound fractured off side leg. Curious to see how the shank held up this time. I will let you know. Keep up the great work.
Just don't send the sevr through a scapula, tested the 1.5 on an elk scapula and it forced the blades beyond the stops and wound up an inch cut after. It also did the worst with penetration being beaten by the old rage, nap spitfire, and grim reaper micro Hades 3 blade
I don’t think I could use a Shwacker on an elk praying I get a pass through. Not a good enough entry for me to hope for a one sided blood trail. Im sticking to an IronWill or implant head.
I killed a elk with the 1.75 sevr I wouldn’t recommend it for elk . The gel isn’t a true test nothing like the real meat to test it. I found the sevr slows way down on impact when it hit the thick skin of and elk. Losing all forward momentum… and is super loud on impact which I really don’t like .. I went back to ironwill hard to beat something that’s a solid and true.
I've been using swhacker 269 2.5 inch cut killed animals nothing made it more than 50 yards had 1 non pass thru shoulder shot on a big buck blood trail Was non existent but didn't matter when he ran 35 yards and died

G5 Deadmeat IMO is a better head than the Megameat. The shorter blades hold up a lot better and a 1.5” cut three blade puts blood on the ground.
"Hello darkness my old friend" 😂 kids are raised right!
I use the sevr 1.5. Big holes on a doe this past season.
Are you going to do a video on the Mathew Match string?
Dan should try the QAD Exodus swept or full

VPA solid 3 blade i have also and is a really really good head. Very affordable for what you get but they are more finicky than the Hades design when tuning for flight ive found. Makes sense, more surface area. But even just at 40 with a perfect bullet hole thru paper they hit way diffeent than Hades pro. They also make a new 2 blade solid single bevel and a solid 2 blade double bevel. Very good materials made in the US.
VPA is very underrated - I plan on doing some more work with them down the road! -DS
I switch to sevr this year shot a buck with it great head i think you will like it..great show keep up the good work
The Sevr 2.0s make an impressive entry wound I had a full pass through on a buck with a 620 gr arrow I was very pleased with them
@@MarvinWafflehouse91 sheesh 😅620 ?
@@matthewmiller6817 ain’t no lack of penetration with that weight I guarantee you
My go to mech is the G5 deadmeat V2 and go to fixed is the IW SB.
Word! -DS
Thanks for watching!
Curious why the bottom one (grim reaper) seems like it’s direction is more downward than the other ones.. any idea?
I would really like to see the beast and g5 Megameat in your testing
So how can a 2 inch mechanical out penetrate 1 1/8 inch cut on contact?? I think ya get so much shaft drag with gel it doesn't correspond with what happens in the real world. Inside a critter is viscous and lubricating i think gel is exactly opposite.. maybe not . Im just a dumb hillbilly so take everything i said with a grain of salt. Love the show have a great day bro✌️
Never tested but that logic adds up to me
I’d love to have the Swhacker 269 (the Levi Morgan one) with a titanium ferrule!
It's aluminum BTW however I've killed 6 animals so far everything is dead within seconds
I really like you got the kids involved. Keep up the good videos. I shoot sever they are awesome
I love the swhacker took alot of good animals with it. Try Levi Morgan #269 great broadhead 125gr 2.5 inch cut
@@codyjohnson675 how's the penetration with those
I have a 1minute video of a pa whitetail shot with a shwacker. It shows an inlet hole thru hide, inside ribcage, lungs, and exit hole. Straight pass thru at 25 yds. How do I send it to you? It's 5.3k 60fps.
I like the sevrs but I hate those O ring retention system. I’ve had them pop in the quiver! I went to the grim reaper fatal steel
Swachers are the best broadheads out there killed a bunch animals with them can't go wrong with them.
Just used a sevr 2.0 on a whitetail. Insane bleeder.
Have you thought about the Shwacker Hybrid? Seems like a great hybrid design.
What is that?
It’s the mech with a 1” fixed and 2” mech. Four blades on entrance. A constant cut in theory. I haven’t tired them but they are interesting.
Would love to see the grim reaper micro hades against a ramcat diamond bqck or hudroshock for accuracy, penetration, sharpness.
“Mom what happens if you eat it?”😂
👀 look at the thorn XV mechanical broad heads.
All great heads but very animal specific. Really enjoyed your kids reaction 😂
100g shwacker blasted ribs and totaled a heart for me this year. Flies much like a field point
Need to check out the Mega Meat for sure!
Use a roadkill buck carcass!
I don’t think I could use a Shwacker on an elk praying I get a pass through. Not a good enough entry for me to hope for a one sided blood trail. Im sticking to an IronWill or implant head.
You should have thrown a Grim Reaper Pro 1-3/8 or Mini Mag into the mix.
Ya man - I brought some of those with me to hunt Axis, they're 100% legit for the mechanical category! -DS
I would say save a elk scapula and get sum tanned hide then you have the jell. Then test the broadheads and see what they do?
I killed a elk with the 1.75 sevr I wouldn’t recommend it for elk . The gel isn’t a true test nothing like the real meat to test it. I found the sevr slows way down on impact when it hit the thick skin of and elk. Losing all forward momentum… and is super loud on impact which I really don’t like .. I went back to ironwill hard to beat something that’s a solid and true.
"Mom what happens if you eat it " 😂
I use the SEVR 2.0 and its nasty I love it
I'd throw the SIK Meat Seeker into the mix as well.
I've been using swhacker 269 2.5 inch cut killed animals nothing made it more than 50 yards had 1 non pass thru shoulder shot on a big buck blood trail Was non existent but didn't matter when he ran 35 yards and died
“Mom, what happens if you eat it?” You have to love kids. This is awesome.
🤣
