Opeth is a Swedish progressive metal/rock band from Stockholm, formed in 1989 by lead vocalist David Isberg.[1][2] The group has been through several personnel changes, including the replacement of every single original member; notably Isberg in 1992. Mikael Åkerfeldt has been Opeth's frontman and primary songwriter since Isberg's departure. Opeth has consistently incorporated progressive, folk, blues, classical, and jazz influences into its usually lengthy compositions, as well as strong influences from death metal, especially in their early works. Many songs include acoustic guitar passages and strong dynamic shifts, as well as death growls. Opeth is also well known for their incorporation of Mellotrons in their work. The band rarely made live appearances supporting their first four albums, but since conducting their first world tour after the 2001 release of Blackwater Park, they have led several major world tours.

Opeth will change how you view music forever
I came from dream theater and other prog bands when I was introduced to opeth.. so it wasn't like that very much, because they share almost the same complexity and musicality.
But I loved the atmosphere, vocals and chord progressions/selection a lot. Their style suited me much more. Opeth became my favourite band for sure!

There is a very good reason Tool and Opeth are my favourite bands.
Opeth is versatile in a song, but throughout their discography their span is incredible. Opeth has more music in one album than some metal bands in their entire diacography. And it is not forced. Not the typical prog masturbatory shit - that stuff is deep and sad and beautiful and angry and happy..

I understand the choice, but literally every reaction to Opeth starts with this, and Harlequin Forest. Which are good choices but sometimes it stops after those two. I would like to see more obscure-ish songs
The more you delve into metal, the more depth of musicality, and technical brilliance you will find. To many, metal straddles the world of classical music and rock, and tells the story of mankind in a much more honest and dynamic way than most other media.
There is nothing better then watching someone discover the magic that is Opeth!
This whole live album is a masterpiece. This sounds even better than many studio recordings. Ghost of perdition one of my favorite songs. Great reaction as always 🤘✌️
85% from their songs are without growls and I checked in. After a while I like the growling parts, because every fairytail has a evil part too.
Well well well...looky here. Tool is a rabbit hole that is all Tool. Opeth, however, will take your around the world of music from black death metal to 70s fusion jazz. This song is the sweet spot of their work.

First time hearing Opeth too. Definitely like the melodic nature of the sound. More melodic then most similar music.
I love seeing people react to Opeth for the first time. This song is a lot to take in on a first listen. You seemed to like parts of it. They have around 12 albums so there is a lot to choose from. If you aren't a big fan of harsh vocals and you mentioned liking the soft part I would suggest anything from the Damnation album as a good starting point. Truth is it's pretty hard to go wrong with Opeth but that might fit your personal taste.
This is the 1st Opeth song I ever heard, and it is still my favorite. The only one that comes close is Deliverance
Pleasantly surprised was expecting the chugging and growling and this is so much more. It reminds me a slightly darker version of Dream Theater. Very progressive and very intriguing.
Mikael, singer, stopped growling on last 4 albums, so if you don't like growling there's so much of their music you can check out. They originally started from death metal but they're constantly exploring and evolving - for instance, they have Damnation, an album with slow, acoustic-oriented songs, or Heritage, more progressive rock oriented album. But somehow when you dive into their rabbit hole, you learn to accept the 'demon voice' parts as part of folklore :)... Btw, Mikael's growling is the only growling where I can actually understand what he's saying...

Yes, agree with the rabbit hole comment. I discovered them earlier this year with the song Sorceress, got me hooked and into their whole back catalogue. I've always enjoyed metal so his growling didn't bother me, I think his is the best one I've heard too & he does it brilliantly live. I look forward to their next album and more evolution.
Orchid and Morningrise are amazing. Two of the first albums in this realm of amazing music!!!

I'm going to brag, I was at this show in Red Rocks. Besides Opeth there was Gojira and Devin Townsend. It was a fantastic show and I'll remember it always. Also I have seen Opeth 3 times before and they always perform to the best of their abilities and are progressive metal masters. Same with all the bands that performed there that day. \,,/

Some of their music is absolutely beautiful, like the entire Damnation album, and some are just so effin brutal...they're so talented.
First Tool, now Opeth, and Gojira up next? 3 epic bands, each worthy of a deep discography dive. Another one you should check out is Jinjer. Most people start with Pisces, but I'd recommend Vortex for one of their newer songs.
I'd say growling/screaming/harsh vocals is an acquired taste and it really helps at first to have the lyrics. Once you get into them they add a whole new dynamic to songs, especially if the vocalist can sing well too.
Try "Deliverance", "Harlequin Forest", "Faith in Others", "Bleak" or "Burden" next! :)

Couldn't recommend a band more than Opeth. If you choose to - you are in for quite a journey as this band has evolved quite a lot of the past 30 years. Been a huge fan since the very early 90's. Mikael (the singer) is a hugely creative song writer and this truly comes through in the arrangements of the songs. I will advice though, Opeth has always been a progressive band spanning from Death and even Black metal in the early days to more progressive metal and now for the past 10 years or so solely progressive rock mixed up with a 70's psychedelic vibe. They ditched the growling elements (unfortunately in my opinion) many years ago now but still manage to put out excellent albums. I would recommend going with "Blackwater Park" next - their true Magnum Opus. Welcome to the rabbit hole.

Opeth has many faces. Early work is largely death metal, although progressive for the genre. Then a slow and steady move to more prog metal, and now almost just pure prog rock.
I myself really enjoy their later work.

Anyone who recognizes the musical genius of something like this as well as you do immediately gets some more respect from me. Even if this isn't your exact kind of music, you were clearly into it and that means you have good taste. I'm sure the rest of the comments have told you how many songs of equal quality Opeth has. I definitely recommend trying more, because Opeth seems like a good bridge for non-metal fans. There's a perfect balance of beauty and brutality in the music.

As far as a favorite I think you'd like way more than this one, is The Moor off of the Still Life album. Epic shit is kinda their thing

Opeth absolutely warrants a deep dive. The light and dark vocals are a staple of their earlier stuff. The newer music is a little more chill. I see a lot of suggestions for Harlequin Forest and yeah, that should probably be the next one. Though I think "The Drapery Falls" shouldn't be slept on.
Also, this drummer is very very good. The whole band is, but he is standing out.
Great place to start, but if the growls aren't your thing, check out the album Damnation. No growls there, and the music is mellower in a way, but without sacrificing intensity. Windowpaene is probably a good place to start for that album.

The lyrics are top notch for what they are. You really can’t go wrong with the recommendations for more Opeth songs, harlequin Forest can be a lil lighter while blackwater park is a crusher
Fully support more Opeth reactions! Like Tool they offer super rewarding complex listens you can go back to time and time again. I suggest two reasonably short (for them) tracks that show case their versatility: Demon of the Fall and Faith in Others. The latter has some of the heaviest lyrics ever written in my view.
Opeth suggestion would have to be the moor off the still life album in 99

opeth have always been true artists, a lot of their stuff is very heavy and turns people off but its always done so well its hard to say anything is bad... its 100% entry level metal but also way more than just that
it can take people quite some time to truly appreciate metal vocals but you'd be surprised how amazing it can be once you get an "ear" for it... some of the best music ever made
I want to just toss a ton of requests at you but most of them would be the deep end of the pool and would probably turn you away from even trying... but I'll do one (its harsh vocals that you can understand, well, should be able to at least)

Long time Opeth Fan, first time on the channel. Another good choice would be "Harlequin Forest" (song is from 2005, live at the Royal Albert Hall is amazing, a tiny bit less death metal)), or maybe "Bleak" (2001, a tiny bit more growling).
Opeth have tons of Masterpieces, and I could (and will do if you keep making reactions) have listed many other Songs here, mostly of their 1998-2008 Era, where all 7 albums are at least a 9.5/10, if not a 10/10. Their first two (1995/1996) records ar a bit more raw and black metal-ish, and everything after 2008 is more like 70s style prog rock - interesting and worth a listen, but there are Bands that did this kind music better imo.

Skullz, since you enjoyed this piece, I have another recommendation for you. It's not that similar in terms of style (much less "metal"), but the top tier musicianship and compositional complexity is there. The song is Anesthetize, by Porcupine Tree. The definitive version you want is the one that is live from Tilburg. Normally, I would be right there with you regarding listening to the studio version first, but Porcupine Tree is the exception to this rule. The sound quality is absolutely stellar, and seeing the performances really makes a difference. I really think you will dig this one! It's a long one, but it changes things up often enough, I promise you won't be bored!

Opeth are incredibly talented. If you'd like to hear something without growls, check out "Burden" (longer version, not the crappy radio edit) or "Universal Truth".
Do the dive. Opeth will gel with you very well I suspect. I saw that you were doing this wing and I said to myself “oh yeah….. this will grab skullz. I think he’ll dig it.” Makes me super happy to see you on the Opeth trail. The vast majority of their newer material is sans growling vocals. Their whole library is great though.
Good choice to start with this song. Try Sorceress from the same show. You'll be even more impressed. Pretty different. No growling.

This song is iconic and one of their best in that style for a multitude of reasons. You seemed to "get" Opeth right away, always nice to see! I didn't at first because that heavy/mellow contrast threw me off a bit (and I was totally in a Metallica phase at the time). They really are something special and basically don't have bad songs on the first 9! albums. 😀
Fun little tidbit that their singer told on a swedish metaldocumentary: Their first ever gig sucked so much that the founder left and they were a laughing stock in Stockholm. The singer decided that their second gig would have to be so good that noone would remember their first so they locked themselves up in a basement and started working on their skills. They even started practicing with the lights turned off and whenever someone made a mistake they would turn on the lights and point at that person for blame.
I saw their first national tour a few years later. A musical student friend of mine that was with me was completely bereft. "I'll never become as good a musician as these guys!"
Opeth are the heirs of the Romantic era composers. At least up to their genre switch to 70's prog.

Ghost is great, but best place to start is probably Harlequin Forest.
I really hope you react to Dream Theater sometime. I would recommend Panic Attack for the first listen or maybe Pull me Under.

Best band on earth
Opeth for me has been one of the best bands that I have been able to enjoy live, with an incredible quality! They really are fucking geniuses of music and they are capable of taking you on a wonderful musical journey, they can go from the most extreme of guttural to almost angelic harmonies,
