Ned Rig: The best WALLEYE bait no one’s throwing

  • Some of my biggest walleyes EVER have been caught on a jigworm…which I believe you kids call Ned Rigs nowadays (lol). Lots were caught on accident while bassin’ in the weeds, but more and more on purpose over the last few years....
    I did a Target Walleye write-up a few springs ago now called "Ned Rig: The best WALLEYE bait no one’s throwing," and figured it was (finally) time for some video proof. Being Saturday of Memorial weekend, the lake was absolutely hopping. But the good news is most of the boats were fishing waaaay out in deeper water, so I had most of the shallow shoreline breaks and humps to myself. 😎👊 Hope you dig it!

      This made me spit my beer out laughing. How many Minnesotan’s have had the same joy of setting the hook on a walleye to just throw your net down once boat side, to land a Largemouth? I think the creative types call them “happy accidents”……………

    Last year, I watched this video. We were out in our usual spot that we catch a few good size walleye. They were not hitting their usual baits that we always throw at them. I tried this method. Bang land one. We also tried another one of your little tips. A jig head and half a worm. It too was a game changer. So far, everything you have suggested has worked for those stubborn walleyes. I know this year, the bite may be different. So I am going to be prepared with some of your tricks, including the ones you used this winter on Lake Winnipeg . Thanks for all the great advice.

    Brett, I just got back today from a fishing trip to Ear Falls, Ontario Canada. I have been to the lodge for the past 20 years. This video on throwing a Ned Rig completely dominated the walleye and SMB this past week. I was throwing a green pumpkin finesse TRD and green pumpkin Hula Stick with matching mushroom jigs. I caught so many walleyes between 21-27” and bass from 18-22”. I was out fishing my dad who loves using minnow setups (I used to use minnows as well).The entire camp was dumbfounded. Your content is awesome to watch and learn from! Keep up the amazing work.

    Like you, I tried fishing for bass (smallies). Only first used the ned a couple years ago and have had great luck with Pike and Walleyes. I've never heard of anyone else using it for walleyes, so this is a really good tip for a lot of people I'm sure. I've had the most luck with the orange z-man's ... the walleyes love them. I fish a lot of minnows, but this is one goto that can outfish the minnows at times.

    Brett, I'm a big fan of the Ned and I throw it almost everywhere I fish, with excellent results. I regularly outfish my boat partner when he fishes something else. I haven't caught any walleye with it yet but that's only because the smallmouth beat them to it. Will keep throwing the Ned wherever I fish, because I know I can always catch something with it.

    Absolutely nailed it man on the pflueger president reel, every reel I currently fish with is pflueger, I have Trion for my panfishing, presidents and xt for smallmouth river fishing, saugeye fishing both lake and river, soon my birthday gift from my children is gonna be a pflueger reel, but I'm not sure which one, I've been told "this time it's a surprise Dad" lol. So we will see. Great information on the nedding for walleye, sauger, saugeye, thought bout for years but never tried. So I've got me 7'2' carbon med fast rod and I've picked up some Ned type tackle, and we will see if I can manage some late summer/early saugeye. Keep up the great videos, thank you for what you do.

    I believe this technique has gotten even better with the unfortunate goby invasion. When you swim this rig real slow, it looks like a goby...when you work it slow and then pop it, I think they are convinced it's a crawdad.

    I just got home from our local walleye lake tonight. We have been killing it with Northland Fireball jigs tipped with minnows. We switched to crawlers after running out of minnows. Did even better with them... Next time I'm out I will try tossing some turds at the walleye. We like using PB&J here and also Bubble Gut. Smallies love em!!!! Great video BTW!

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  3 роки тому +2

      Thx! Depending on the current I run the 3/16-oz or even bump up to 1/4-oz. Less dragging the bait and instead more hops to keep it out of snags. Have had some great sucess on rivers around central MN, but if there's too much current or the water is just too dirty (limited clarity) there's better options to move more water for fish to track down your bait. For sure worth a shot tho! Oh and bump up that fluorocarbon leader to 10-lb. If the water clarity is only about a foot or so then just tie it straight to the braid.

    Hair jig mighta been worth a try.

  • @davealles9927
    @davealles9927 7 місяців тому

    It's not just simply that the Ned rig today is just a jig head and soft plastic, nor has it been around since the 70s. Zman TRD was introduced in 2014. The biggest difference with it is the buoyancy of the plastic, which postures the hook upright as the jig head remains on bottom.
    Today's Ned rig will outfish any old jig head from years ago any day of the week.
    We have been throwing it for walleye for a couple years now, of course it originated as a pleasant surprise as walleye was not the target species.

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  7 місяців тому

      I definitely agree that the buoyancy of the plastic is the key difference, and also that most days it crushes other plastics that do not float - depends how you are fishing them.
      But FYI the first Mushroom Head Jig mold was created in the mid-70s, and were first sold in 1976. Some folks were crushing the MN bass tourney scene with the new style/technique. Started with craws, but soon Ribbontail worms and Slug-Gos entered the scene a couple years later.
      Funny enough, Ned Kehde was first shown the Mushroom Head Jigs by my old boss Ron Lindner while on a fishing trip in Minnesota in the early ‘80s.
      I personally knew local central-MN guides and others (who have since passed on) that were using the “jig worm” technique for multi-species guide trips all the way back in the late-70s, putting their clients on bass, walleye and northern without ever having to fuss with live bait and they were dumby-proof to fish. It’s obviously progressed since then - and the floating plastics has been a huge development in getting more bites…I’m just saying you take away the floating properties and folks have in fact been doing this since the late-70s. But I'm happy we have floaters now!

      Other way around 😂 I used it for a YT vid back in July 2018. Much love to B-Rizzle lol ❤️ and I actually didn't realize he used it for his outros now. Super sick song! Nate Rose puts out some heaters.

    Basically same thing as a mister twister tail. People been using for walleye way before you were born.

      Oh yeah those have always and will always catch fish. The bigger difference would be how you're fishing them.

    Hummm, It's always bothered me that a proven fact is that fish ALWAYS have better visibility of a dark colored bait against a light background and a light colored bait against a dark background and yet when we thread our two toned plastics we always do the REVERSE of what is BEST in regards their visibility??? Nature/our creator gave bait fish their best protection to AVOID against being mauled in their color scheme and yet, we mimic that very same color scheme when we're trying to catch the prey we seek! Think about it, how does this make any sense???? I got to believe that we'd have more success if we would change this mentality.

      To me, it makes sense when you're trying to match the hatch. Depends where you're fishing. Super clear water, heavily-pressured fish that see lots of artificial baits every day...I'd usuallyyyyy rather sling something that looks like the real thing. Even if it means it's harder for the fish to see. Fine by me if it fools the ones that get close enough to it to eat. That being said there are definitely certain days and lakes where doing the opposite beats the snot out of them! 👍 And it seems backwards, but dark baits actually do a better job of creating a silhouette in dirty water. It doesn't really make sense in my tiny brain, but there's some great underwater videos on UA-cam where you can see the difference it makes. Thanks for watching!

      @@TargetWalleye Lets say you're using a fluke jerk bait, would it not seem more realistic to reverse the color scheme to better imitate an injured/ dying minnow?

    I know what you mean. I learned about the Ned rig three years ago and while fishing bass have caught such a variety of fish on them including walleye, lots of pike, sheep head and my best a 4 ft musky on the same three inch green goby turd you had in your video. I keep shocking my buddies because while their trying to catch fish I’m pulling them in on this weird looking bait they’ve never seen before that a young lad who’s father owned a bait store turned me onto.
