I honestly think elaztech is the way to go with ned rigs and I've had one bait catch over 40 fish in one day before I needed to replace it. I would recommend buying the heavier wire Z man hooks though because the smaller hooks bend out or the hook keeper breaks with a medium spinning rod, 6 pound line and small bass
Awesome Ned tip overview, Miles!! Totally agree about having to drag set loose enough to where you barely hear it when you set the hook. That is crucial, especially if you’re using 6 pound line like I do. God bless!

Yes! Happy to be a big fan of Elaztech. It is, as you mentioned, 'magic' and the extensive product line is superb. Kudos to Z-Man for a well deserved homage to Ned Kehde and his extensive experience in the Finesse fishing genre. As many comments pointed out, the idea of using small pieces or remnants of plastisol has been around a long time. No matter, amazing lures continue to come from the Z-man design team with assistance from veteran anglers like Drew Reese. Agree totally with using medium weight gear and lighter line. 8 lb fluoro or mono seems to work better to resist abrasion in rocks and brush and brings all sizes of fish to hand. Keep up the great work, Don

Z-Man Fishing TV - you gotta make sure to capitalize on the smaller rivers and streams market--fishing the TRD HogZ (green pumpkin) almost isn't fair on the Shenandoah River for smallies. My father and I have made it our annual summer trip since I was 5 years old (I'll be 41 later this month) and it's changed the game. We've used the Finesse TRD, BugZ, TicklerZ and the CrawZ all killed them. My favorite part, is that is how the durability of these lures has shrunken the amount of gear I need to take out on the canoe, kayak or wading.
Just did this earlier this summer and it was too much fun. I went out two more times after to chase em' cause they could just not get enough. Also caught a 25" cat on the pb&j color TRD!
Elaztech did not pioneer the Ned rig. It was pioneered by a man who used his tore up senkos by cutting them in half. Elaztech simply improved upon the technique.
Ned Kehde. We just call it a jig n worm. Yes it works great but next time your going to ned rig try this. Put a nail weight in 1 end and Texas rig the other. Looks just like the Ned except it always stands up and it goes through weeds rocks anything. Been using it on Erie and the Detroit River since the 90s. Awesome bed bait!
6 foot 19 medium power extra fast action with 8lb fluorocarbon on a Shimano Stradic 3000 FA (2nd Gen) is my go-to Ned rig setup. Caught a lot of fish with it this fall

We use these for smallmouth bass on the Delaware River bordering PA and NJ. It is tougher to fish in heavy, moving water, but days of landing dozens of bass are common for us.

I’ve been fishing the “Ned Rig” for nearly 25 years since I was a young kid! Way before it was fashionable and had a name! Back then I simply used it as a way to extend the lives of plastic baits that had parts of them broken off or as a way to fish small plastic baits since I nearly always got more bites when I fished the lures that way although I did tend to catch a lot more small bass with that style of fishing!
Michael Hungerford haven’t tried those yet i’ll have to give em a shot they were all sold out when i looked so i went with z man but i like trying all different stuff
I have friends who swear they simply don't get the same amount of bites with the elaztech baits as they do from similar sized/shaped baits. Sure they last forever, but they are also a pain to rig and deal with. I think it's a bit hoggish of ZMan to try to make the case that just because they pioneered these elaztech baits (not the technique) that you're not going to succeed to the greatest extent unless you use their elaztech baits. I was into a big school of fish readily eating the shad shape worm on a drop shot, so I figured it was a good time to try the Zman elaztech look alike (kind of) minnow bait in the same green pumpkin, but the fish didn't want it. Your tips were good and that's the power of endorsement videos. When your shirt and hat match, you know what's coming. Almost over the top to make that suggestion - only a portion of the strikes come when its on the bottom, standing up, and no bait, despite their buoyancy, stand up every time they fall. Enough said.
Do the bullet head weedless heads stand up straight still without the mushroom? If not you guys should make a widegap variety of Ned heads so we can t rig it on and make it weedless. Trying to get more into the Ned rig but I’m coming back with grass on every cast :(
Great question! Since the Finesse BulletZ are keel weighted, it causes the bait to sit at a 45 degree angle. This makes this hook perfect for finesse creature baits like the TRD CrawZ or TRD BugZ. Also, it's technically the buoyant ElaZtech material that causes the bait to stand up off the bottom, not the actual jighead. As for the wide gap idea...stay tuned!
Ok. First of all Zman DID NOT originally come up with the technique. It was Ned Kahde. Hince the NED rig, not Z rig or anything like that. The elaztech material does enhance the technique because of its bouyancy. I even used 4" Rebel ring worms on a 1/16 crappie jig head catching tank or pond bass in Texas when growing up. Same technique using slightly different things. I couldn't afford a bunch of different tackle when growing up. So basically, lighter line, spinning, and fish it slower. Common sense will guide you on the rest of it or at least I hope so. For those who can't afford a bunch of fluorocarbon line, then use about a 6' leader. I used mono without any problems. Fluorocarbon line wasn't a choice until the earlier 2000s for bass fishing.
they dont stand up when it hits bottom on pauses and they put rattles in their neds which personally i think is a gimmick and is silly. just buy the trd from zman, googan is a hype brand and tried to make the ned better but they made it worse by adding weight to the bait, its just not good for a fineness fishing.
Z-man never pioneered the "ned " rig ... it has been around for years e-laz-tech plastic is the game changer here how can you fish a jig the wrong way?
@@djavidianmx1832 pioneering also means developing. Developing means grow or cause to grow and become more mature, advanced, or elaborate. So yes they absolutely pioneered it. Please use a dictionary before being an internet dick.
I was fishing still murky water with spinners with no luck aside from some freshly spawned white crappie. Switched to the ned rig just for fun and almost immediately hooked into a 5lb bass that had followed the rig up to shore. Love the little thing!
Good video! Have been using the Finesse TRD a lot lately but, have a question. In rigging the finesse TRD, do you bring the hook out through the "nubbed/bubbled" end or the other end? I see a line etched into the bait that runs down the nubbed/bubbled end. It seems if you bring the hook out at the end of that line, the finesse TRD hook will come out of the bait at the correct place. Any rigging tips you can offer? Thanks!
Line it up with the seam on the side. Find out how far the hook will go. Chucky side first. Make sure you keep it all lined up. Or it'll flop on the water like LeBron does in the playoffs.
you can jig it, swim it, drag it. or do all at once. depends how the fish are biting. but if you swim it id recommend retrieving it like you would a jerk bait “tap tap pause”, ive had quite a bite of luck doing that.
3rd mistake depends on the species. Yes, smallmouth and largemouth do you the favor of going for a five mile swim with the bait before spitting it out again and you just need to apply some pressure, but that won´t work for pike-perch or walleye.
Another tip. ElaZtech soft plastics cannot be repaired if there are opened or cracked areas that need bonding. It will bond to the painted surfaces of the weighted jig head and the end of the TRD worm with superglue. Don't mix ElaZtech with other plastic worms. They will chemically bond to reach other and cause deformation. I've tried Mend-It with no success too. Certain fish attractants will also desolve the plastic material.
I use heavy tackle. Haven't lost a fish. And only bend if you don't have your drag set right. I use a 4000 reel as well. I also will fish ned rigs erratic. And like to move it. I'll catch 12-13 bass in a afternoon. I feel people are missing out. Might be wrong, but I caught my PB this way. And my first bowfin. .
Great question Billy! We always recommend starting off with as light of a jighead as possible. The key is a slow sink rate. Try starting with the 1/15th oz. and if you find yourself fishing deeper than 10-15 feet or if you're fishing in heavy current try going a little heavier like a 1/10th or 1/6th oz. jighead. Thanks for reaching out and be sure to let us know how you do!
I only have 3 poles ( 1 spinning combo ). it is a 6'6 medium heavy kastking rod with a 6:2:1 gear ratio lews Mach smash. I was wondering if I would still be able to use it on that rod? thanks for the help
Brodie, I've been fishing Z-man baits for about the last 4 years, in all kinds of configurations, Ned rigs, Neko, TX rigs, drop shots, split shot, etc. You can definitely use your outfit, but be sure and loosen the drag so you won't rip the jig out on hookset. The most amazing thing I've found when fishing the Ned rig was that I nearly always SEE the bite before I feel it! Which is why I use a yellow or white braid to 6-10 lb fluoro leader. Caught crappie, bluegill, bass over 6 lbs and pike over 10 lbs on Ned rigs! (Really lucky with the pike). Watch your line and easy on hookset, you'll do great!
Good video, but I do not agree on the light hook, you can certainly use a small heavy hood that won't change the action, but prevents your hook from bending out.
When I first handed the wife a ned rig and said "Cast it out, let it fall and give it short hops on the way back". She Chucks it out and fishes it like a crank. She couldn't keep the fish off it, meanwhile I'm skunked. Well what do I know.
LOL-- no kidding. My wife is a fish catching machine and according to me, she fishes everything too fast, too slow, too shallow, too deep, etc., or she's flat-out not paying attention. Maybe I'm the one fishing everything wrong.
Iv been fishing these for 4yrs I use a medium power with 6lb braid to 6lb Fluor leader caught a 6lber and almost a 8lber this is my go to bait for summer
Took the kayak out to the local pond last week. Started using Senko Texas rigged with no luck...switched to Ned rig and bam....started catching fish. Great tactic to fight off the skunk!!
Great tips and solid explanations. Only down side is the trd soft plastics melt easily. Don't leave them in the sun or the car. Found that out the hard way!
For Mistake #7 get a Z-Man ElaZtech Bait and or Bait LockerZ I finally got one and I’m tell you it’s the best for storing Z-man baits or any other soft plastics
I use 12 flouro leader and 10 braid backing and I have bent hooks out a little , granted they bend back and keep working but they only bend out on snags
My first and last experience with Z man was 3 packages of melted grubs when I opened my tackle box the morning of a tournament on Lake Champlin ..In 40 yrs of fishing never happened..keep the zman ill never switch from kalin again
Just fyi: "The original TRD..." (?) The Ned rig originally used a ZinkerZ cut in half. When more people learned about this 'new' rig, zman then came out with the TRD and made them, pound-for-pound, more expensive than the zinkerz. And 'jig-worm' rigs were used before zman existed.
Depends what kind of fishing youre doing and type of pole. I typically run braid on the reel and a floro leader.. Some say you should put a mono backing on bigger reels but i think that was for the days when braid was crazy expensive. I think thats nullifying one of braids best properties. You can put a lot of line on even a small reel. Also it cuts through alot of soft cover pretty well. Floro is just clearer and stiff compared to mono. However you really need to practice, test, and pay attention to your knot tying with these types of line. Special knots need to be used. If you get that down its great!
Mistake number 8: not stockpiling on ela-z-tech to suit your needs during lockdown(I'm out of elaztech and im sad cause the stores that sell it are closed)
I once Tx rigged Z man's little elastac crawfish and tied it on 4 lb line and used a split shot sinker,, that was on my Dock runner,, that's a 3'6" micro lite guys and caught 16 1-2 lb largemouth and #17 took my bait lol
I tried them weightless Texas rigged and instead of it going straight to bottom it goes side to side and bass hammered it hard so that’s how I fish them. Don’t know if anybody else has tried it like that but it works good
Love the Z man Elaztech but calling it a mistake to throw a ned without it is missleading. Strike king also has an excellent Range of Ned baits. My opinion however, is that Elaztech is better in the sense that its way more durable.
I tried Texas rigging the Ned rig... The problem with Elas-Tech is that it "grabs" the hook moreso than normal senko-type baits. A light hookset does not work. The hook does not want to "pop out" of the bait = missed fish. If you're Texas rigging, ditch the Elas-Tech.
Ned Rig has been my go to for 2 years now, and nothing beats zmans original Ned rig setup.

That looks like braid? Didn't you recommend light flouro line...Or do you just use a flouro top shot?
Gotta luv Z Man 👍
Dude they like this thing on the move too lol i constantly get accidental hookups when reeling back for another cast 😂
Happen two me yesterday. Ate it in 2 inches of water by the bank. I didn’t even reel him in I just lifted my rod and that’s how close he was 😂
So you're saying it can be effective just swimming it?
@@Shurmash For some strange reason... YES
you can jig it, swim it, drag it. or do all at once. depends how the fish are biting. but if you swim it id recommend retrieving it like you would a jerk bait “tap tap pause”, ive had quite a bite of luck doing that.
you mention using a spinning reel set up, would a spincast be okay? novice fisherman here.
3rd mistake depends on the species.
Yes, smallmouth and largemouth do you the favor of going for a five mile swim with the bait before spitting it out again and you just need to apply some pressure, but that won´t work for pike-perch or walleye.
Which is the best zman jig for the ned rig?
And my first bowfin. .
what size/weight zman ned rig jig head do y'all use? i've heard 1/10 or 1/15. fishing from the bank, depth is up to like 7 feet or so in a lake
Is 30 pound braid okay with 8 pound triple xt low vis leader ? The braid was all I had so I used it
What length rod works best? I'm using a 6 foot medium action now.
What about Ned rigs on a medium light Spincast rod? It also seems like a good combination
@@johne4220 thanks for the help
Thanks for your declaration!
Is it possible to put a rattle in one of these baits and if so how ?? Great video and love these Lures ... so do the perch 👍🏽😀🎣🎣
go look at googan baits, they’re ned baits are called rattlin neds, they have a rattle in the end of the bait
@@lucifer3201 cheers buddy 🎣🎣👍🏽👍🏽😀😀
@@johnloxley8705 tight lines!
That’s funny. I was actually catching fish on it last night while cranking it back after letting it sit.
Quit fishing.
@@Neji90 Nah bro. She out fishes me on my bad days. I out fish you all days.lol.
@@rhodesianhunter9360 lol
Iv been fishing these for 4yrs I use a medium power with 6lb braid to 6lb Fluor leader caught a 6lber and almost a 8lber this is my go to bait for summer
Thank you for the tips
What brand and model spinning rod do you use? Looking to upgrade rods this year especially with the Ned rig to feel the bottom better and bites?
Took the kayak out to the local pond last week. Started using Senko Texas rigged with no luck...switched to Ned rig and bam....started catching fish. Great tactic to fight off the skunk!!
What rod is he using I’m looking for a ML spinning rod and I’m curious
Please
Miles uses a Fitzgerald rod
Great tips and solid explanations. Only down side is the trd soft plastics melt easily. Don't leave them in the sun or the car. Found that out the hard way!
For Mistake #7 get a Z-Man ElaZtech Bait and or Bait LockerZ I finally got one and I’m tell you it’s the best for storing Z-man baits or any other soft plastics

everything about buoyancy
We had one too, but the wheels fell off
I use 12 flouro leader and 10 braid backing and I have bent hooks out a little , granted they bend back and keep working but they only bend out on snags
I was using 4ib test line, and didn't losen up my drag, smallmouth broke line like nothing.
My first and last experience with Z man was 3 packages of melted grubs when I opened my tackle box the morning of a tournament on Lake Champlin ..In 40 yrs of fishing never happened..keep the zman ill never switch from kalin again
Do you set the hook a little harder if you go weedless
Not really. It's still a fine wire hook, so you only need to come tight on the reel to properly set the hook.
Not enough hand gestures
Agreed. haha

Bayou Burner 😂
I have made all 6 mistakes lol just started fishing the ned two weeks ago so I’m learning
Keep at it! Let us know how you do.
Ya guys have done this for years but it didnt work nearly as well that's why Z Man cashed in great baits great design
In all the videos you’re using colored braid line. Which one is it?
Cithral braid mainline to a lighter fluoro leader
Sonar uses Seaguar Smackdown braided line.
Awesome video brotha!
What about setting hook with the finesse bullets
Are Z-man’s ned heads and weedless heads made out of lead or a different blend of metal?
Lead
Just started bass fishing / saltwater fisherman. First kayak tournament coming up ......I think NED rig way to go ...
I find it doesn't stand up if I use a 1/0 jighead with the finesse trd, even after soaking it for hours
Use a Texas Rig. I use a size one or two worm hook. It will stand up
Great 👍 video
WHAT LINE IS BEST TO USE MONO FLORO BRAID COPOLYMER
Depends what kind of fishing youre doing and type of pole. I typically run braid on the reel and a floro leader.. Some say you should put a mono backing on bigger reels but i think that was for the days when braid was crazy expensive. I think thats nullifying one of braids best properties. You can put a lot of line on even a small reel. Also it cuts through alot of soft cover pretty well. Floro is just clearer and stiff compared to mono. However you really need to practice, test, and pay attention to your knot tying with these types of line. Special knots need to be used. If you get that down its great!
Mistake number 8: not stockpiling on ela-z-tech to suit your needs during lockdown(I'm out of elaztech and im sad cause the stores that sell it are closed)
walmart sells them! just bought some CrawZ today
Amazon silly boy
buy online. plenty of places that sell them. bass pro, tackle warehouse, amazon (although for some reason prices on amazon are very high for lures).
Thanks goodness bass pro shop and Cabelas, plus the 12 other ma&pa stores are open, screw Dicks
The Ned’s are also good for walleye I’ve found. Caught some tanks with em
