  • When we start a new endeavor or project things may seem hopeless at first. No matter how much effort you put it - nothing seems to be moving. Fact is - this is normal and it's a well described situation by marketing expert Seth Godin in his book "The Dip".     Great video! I started bjj this year, and am trying to get a business off the ground and both are proving super frustrating. But I know that if I keep going, I'll be in a much better place in 1, 3, 5, 10 years time, God willing :)

    so true even in gaming you experience this period of fluctuations in your skill, feeling like this is as good as you will ever get before actually making any progress.

    This plateau or i call it hitting a wall I discovered in guitar and then rediscovered it in karate and then juijitsu. Very interesting topic I talk about this with students of martial arts and students of guitar both of which I am as well. Its a great principle to understand. I describe it this way in the beginning you learn techniques and you are proud of them and your ego may even swell but as you keep practicing you see your flaws again instead of all your strong points your weaknesses behind to reveal themselves. This only means you have grown and are about to grow more. For the only way to grow is to make mistakes adapt overcome an advance. And honestly after you stop training jujitsu I thought maybe you plateaued and didn't realise it. But like my instructor told me how far you take your art is a personal decision and I respect that.       What you are saying also reminds me of the Dunning and Kruger effect. It's when people who don't know much about a practice don't have knowledge how to decide their own level of education or skill in it. Knowing little about it, these people come to decide that they are good at it, although in reality that far from true. The more the person than learns about the field, the more this person realized how much is still not known. That's when this person hits what Dunning and Kruger call "The valley of despair". A realization that there's still so much to learn which may seem discouraging at first. But if looked at the right way, it's actually a sign that progress is made. Realizing that this experience is inevitable may actually to greater motivation too.
      In regards to me stopping my martial arts training, it wasn't really because of hitting a plateau. On one level I discovered that I don't have much drive in martial arts anymore and I realized that without a drive my achievements and progress in martial arts then will be very little. More importantly though, I understood that if I want to create something significant, investing my time into something that I don't hold interest in anymore is also a waste of time. Instead, I am more happy to invest that energy into building something new, which I believe will be more meaningful. Thus I train martial arts very little these days and invest most of my energy into other projects.

      @@Rokasleo Dunning and Kruger effect, wow thats it. I projected my path, actions and feelings onto you thats a real thing too. Lol Great reply Rokus. Once I discovered this 'wall' and realized the cyclical pattern, it help me to accept and even embrace the mistakes knowing I would soon benefit. My weaknesses can be apply it to other areas of my life that are more mundane but need attention.
