This is actually one of the better videos on discipline I've watched, and I've watched a bunch. Instead of just rambling free form, you structured it and presented it very nicely, visuals were top notch and I think I took away some valuable points from it. Please make more such videos on similar topics of achievement, success, fullfilment, happiness, spiritual strength, mental toughness and so on.

I didn’t have discipline growing up. I wasent forced to brush my teeth, I wasent grounded, I wasent forced to eat veggies and fruit. I wasent forced to clean. It’s brutal. I’ve just been going off motivation. My mom recently passed and I don’t have anyone else so that hit hard for me. I’ve realized I’m the only one to change anything. I’m working on my discipline and so far I’ve only started with working out. I’m down 75lbs in a year and I’m still doing but but it’s a lot slower now. I just need to go ahead and do everything else to catch up and once I start I believe I’ll be unstoppable. I just wish I grew up like this so my mom could see I’m not such a disappointment so she could be proud.

Fantastic, brother. Well done on losing the weight.
Parents are often afraid of instilling discipline in their children because they think their kids will grow to resent them. I believe it's better to have children who resent you, but who are prepared to cope with the realities of the world, than to have children who love you, but are useless to society.
I'm psyched to hear you've taken control of your life, brother. Keep it up.

I agree!!! That was such an eye opener, like nothing I've ever heard before. Once we take 20 steps back with 20 negative decisions, we would then have to take 20 positive steps forward, with 20 good decisions, just to be at the same place we started before our downward trajectory. THAT is why we feel hopeless, like we are not going anywhere and like it's pointless to even try. This actually blew my mind. This is why it feels like we are stuck, or not moving. If we go back and forth between + and - decisions, then we will really feel stuck, because ultimately we aren't moving. It will then feel like our goal is so far away that it's unobtainable.
Or, a person can take very big steps to move forward faster, but it's hard to do that. Taking the big steps can lead to us being overwhelmed and quitting. Anthony pointed that out as well.
I will never look at a decision in the same way again.

I have watched hundreds of videos and read countless books about motivation and sometime last year I sort of just hit a wall. Nothing seemed to be seeping through and helping me make lasting positive change. Only fits and starts here and there. Then I was finally diagnosed with ADHD at 50. Honestly, after somewhat unsuccessfully trying to address that issue I had sort of settled into “this is just how I am” and making the positive changes necessary to ever accomplish anything lasting and real was simply not in the cards for me in this life.

I think a strong helper instilled since being a kid was the idea that if something has to be done there is no decision. Getting rid of the decision process altogether and knowing you just have to do it, so just do it, made 90% of decisions non-factors. :)

Oh I love the idea of the +1 framework!
Also, I can confirm that the "Become the master and the slave" theory works and that it works very well (if you discipline yourself to do it daily). The only thing I do differently to emotionally detach myself from the activities that need to be done tomorrow is that I don't think of my tomorrow's self as myself. When I started practicing this I wrote a note for my future selves that summarizes this thinking... "You only live today. That's it. Tomorrow? That's not you, that's tomorrow's Jacob. Your time to do something is today. Do the best you can to move closer to your goals and help tomorrow's Jacob to do the same." It helps me with being grateful to my yesterday's me for doing the decision-making for me and motivates me to do the same for my tomorrow's me. It also helps with actually trying my best to follow the plan I have for the day.
(Btw I didn't come up with this "one day-one life" way of thinking, Seneca did.)

    • @AnthonyVicino
      @AnthonyVicino  Рік тому +3

Same. i'm not sure where I got this particular framework, but Seneca seems a very likely influence.

    Summary!
The resistance, want to put things like status quo
    1. Motivation and discipline
M - feels good, reward centre, short lived
D - do things in the moment, enen if you don't want
    1. Treat everything you do as important (+1 framework Infront, -1 framework behind)
Does not matter how impt the decision, move front and back only
Thinking of every decision is impt (Netflix or learn)
Start small move towards greatness or away
    2. Start work, does not feel about how you feel
    3. Remove temptation
    Intentionally design environment
    4. Become the master and the salvage
    Current and future me
Time block, design the perfect next day for future me
    Future me just follow
    5. Identify my why
Clearly understand why I should do so
Fear at the end of the life, didn't live up the potential
    6. Develop daily discipline practise
Make myself do the hard thing
    How to combat procrastinating
    1. Become aware that I'm delaying
Intentional Maintenance: random alarm + what's my outcome
    2. Reclaim my intention
    - reconnect why I need to do
    3. What I need to do (win the game)
    Objective, set tiny goal
Object at rest will stay at rest, use smallest energy to get the ball start rolling
Give myself lesser time (by the end of the hour)
    4. Just get started
Momentum, any forward motion will put Issac newton with me

Amazing video man, thanks for the great and hard work you put on it, I know how much energy you invested to do it. Focus is my No. 1 goal and I totally agree about the fact that getting out distractions is the key to focus, it is all a mix of not wanting to start because we see the task too big for us and we procrastinate. Discipline is the key to everything, to the whole universe within ourselves, mastering it is a great adventure that I'm loving it. Sometimes the path is not linear, but the important thing is keeping the momentum alive and progress is progress, even a small amount of progress can have a huge impact to our lives.

I am in Anthony's Hyperfocus Masterclass for two weeks, and unlike all other courses, which I left within a few hours, there is still momentum. I work hard on improving my focus and discipline for two weeks, daily. Unbelievable. Maybe it is just because I've read most of the books he recommends, and now it just sinks in, but most likely he is becoming one of the best coaches in the world.

@@thejoe12345 I'm not a paid actor. But it is not a magic pill course either. It is definitely not an easy path. You better be ready for it, meaning - you read a number of books on habits, self-discipline, and you've already tried a lot of things related to habits and discipline.
My goal is to repeat and practice all the things Anthony teaches, over and over, until they become solid habits. I will have to barricade myself from the internet so that my attention does not run to unimportant things. This is the most difficult part of the journey. To keep pushing until the habits are done. Then it should be relatively easy to maintain all habits. Few people are able to do it. My mind is craving for cheap dopamine now. I have withdrawal symptoms. UA-cam, Netflix and games are the best sources for release of this drug. But I'm committed to stay away of it. Although, I have to admit I slipped today. 5 hours on UA-cam. Such a waste of time. I'm quite sorry now, but I can't always make excuses about my ADHD. It was my fault, clearly.

There is a flaw here. How you feel does matter. Because we need to treat what we know we should do as important. But importance is judged by how we feel about it. So what we need to recognise is that we CAN CONTROL how we feel. We can choose it. This is state management and it is the most fundemental part of the drive and dicipline puzzle. And the way we do it is riliguously control how we speak to ourselves.

Setting and shortening our time windows for output is awesome advice! Anyone who reads this and got to 11:45 should keep in mind that Parkinson's law is a bit flawed in that it is very subjective to the relatability of the activity; give me 2 hours with the set up needed to cook a scrambled egg and the work will simply not expand enough to fill the entire process, but give me 2 hours with a set up to write a thesis on discipline and I can find plenty of references to play around with and fill up those 2 hours. Like Anthony said, It is best to just get started on the task as soon as possible. Setting a time window that you can end on and possibly revisit is especially important with tasks that can take up most of your time such as starting UA-cam Channel. Whether you want to focus on quantity or quality first on your endeavors is really up to you and your skills at the moment

Discipline is a function of motivation. It's dependant on purpose. That purpose isn't always consciously available, meaning we don't necessarily know what the discipline is for, if anything. Sometimes all the disciplinary efforts of a person lead to getting hit by a car.
I got great grades in school, k-12 and in my 3.5 years at university. Not once did I question why I was so motivated to try that hard. When I finally did, I realized it was because I was conditioned to, not because it was actually working toward any goal I had any interest in. The actual education hasn't served me much purpose, but I did gain discipline that I applied to other things once I started thinking. I walked out of a lecture mid semester and never went back. I started putting that discipline toward my health and the creation of art. Now my discipline is purposeful, and it isn't hanging on by a thread waiting for the possibility of an existential crisis. So in effect, purposeless discipline served to bridge the gap until I found a purpose, and it provided a lesson that got me where I am. In other words, the purpose of the discipline didn't come full circle until I found purpose. It was necessary for me to get to where I am today. Even if I could conceive if a different path that skipped the bridge, that's not what happened.
