Received our first rain in several months this past weekend, so I definitely agree that raindrops on my garden plants is a wonderfully beautiful sight. 😊 Great tip on dehydrating bolted spinach leaves for using in smoothies later, Cara. I also like using them (and dried kale) in stews.

What a great garden and so much to harvest already. Loved your intro and yes raindrops make everything look so beautiful. Especially those large broccoli and kale leaves. Enjoy dinner. It’s going to be delicious.

Hi Anita! Isn't though! I just think everything looks so pretty after a rain storm. The broccoli was delicious, we ate it for dinner that night. I am hoping for a enough peas to make it inside the house this year haha 🤣
Normally we can get plants in the ground around the middle of May, and tender plants by Memorial Day. This year we have had such a cold spring that most folks have held off and are only just now getting plants in the ground. First frost can be as early as the end of August. And there has been years when we get a hard freeze as early as the first week of September. Though usually if I cover everything at night I can extend the growing season till the first of October. Generally the growing season is around 90-120 days.😉💖
@@megslittlehouseinthecountry Wow a first frost as early as August!? Were are not used to that at all here in zone 7. August is typically blazing hot. How many feet of snow do you typically average a year?
@@bluebirdhomestead not as much as we need. We count feet in the mountains and inches in the valley area. Last couple of winters we've had a low snow pack on the mountains, it has the farmers worried about there being enough water for the growing season. Last year we had reservoirs running very low. Winters can be very cold if there's not enough snow to insulate everything. 🤔
@@megslittlehouseinthecountry How fascinating! I have never thought about winters being colder without snow! That makes sense now that I think about it, with the insulation aspect.
What a fabulous harvest! Your broccoli is really impressive. I notice you haven't netted it. Here in the UK we need to protect our brassica's against the cabbage white Butterfly/ caterpillars. Do you not have any similar pests where you are?
Thankfully the caterpillars and butterflies haven’t really bothered them too much this year. I have picked a few off of the leaves recently though. Thankfully most of the broccoli has been harvested already.
Hi Cara, as always another beautiful video! Your harvest looks great. Do you cook your broccoli any specific way? I have seeds to plant eventually, but I can't get my family interested so am looking for ideas! Do you keep some of your bolting spinach for seeds or do you need the space freed up?
Hi Valerie! Thank you so much! Most of the time we just steam our broccoli lightly so it still has a crunch and do a little olive oil or butter and good salt and pepper. Super simple and nothing crazy. I have found that my kids like it best when it is not mushy. We also like to roast it in the oven with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. 😄 I do plan on keeping a few spinach plants to save some seeds, but not all of them. Since one plant will give me more than enough seeds for next year.
@@bluebirdhomestead Thanks, Cara. My son doesn't like mushy either, so maybe the oven is a good way to go. I can almost get him to eat oven-roasted cauliflower, which is his most detested vegetable 😂
Hi Misha! Thank you so much 😊 I try to keep everything as organic as possible. I use some Neem oil and diatomaceous earth as well good old soapy water. This is my first year using the Neem oil though. ☺️
Typically we have better success in the fall with brassicas, but this year we had a cold rainy spell mixed with hot that I think they liked. Did you try letting yours get bigger before harvesting?
