You have a kind heart. However, did you listen to the part where he talked about the responsibility of using one of these? It would be irresponsible to hand these out. You have to be mindful and sober to light and keep an eye on one of these.
One thing a lot of people with fireplaces don’t always know is if it’s quite cold outside that cold air in the chimney can push smoke/exhaust into a room. Best way to get hot air pushing through that 10 to 20 feet of cold air in a chimney is put a flame into the chimney priming airflow up instead of out into the room. That’s sometimes why when lighting a fireplace the smoke will bellow out instead of going up the chimney when lighting a fire in a cold fireplace.
Yep. Called a cold plug. It can happen if you leave a smouldering log in at the end of the evening. The cold air in the chimney forces the smoke into the room. Make sure you have a smoke alarm.
Have a cabin on a lake in the far reaches of the Maine woods. Take a couple pieces of newspaper or sheets of paper make a funnel light the top of the funnel holding the narrow end. light the funnel, Stick it up into the chimney hold it there won't take long If you have a tall funnel for the smoke to start rising instead of coming back at you. Easy breezy
Look up heating with water barrels. In short. The dark barrels of water, when placed correctly in the greenhouses, will heat up during the day. Then as they release heat during the night it helps to keep the greenhouse warm.

@@cyberpleb2472 I wonder how people managed for centuries with only oil lamps 🤔. Jk, this is obviously for emergencies only where the alternative is literally freezing to death. People used to knock similar lamps over and yes it’d burn down their homes and sometimes cost their lives but for every unsecured lamp there were literally 10s of thousands of people fully capable of harnessing this primitive tech responsibly.
@@spindoggytheexplorer2915 An oil lamp is far safer than this. The flame is shrouded and there is no large hot metal bar. In general, people are a bit dumber today, especially when it comes to dealing with old tech. There are far safe alternatives available that will burn the same fuel.
Definitely would be cool to see a part two with instructions on how to properly/safely snuff the flame and what materials are safe to use to put it out. I heard a rumor that the original alcohol prohibition was because of the affordable nature of using alcohol for energy, cars or candles, like this.
As a child of the 60's I had an alcohol lamp as a kid. It came in my chemistry set. You know back when parents bought 10 year olds all the stuff to make explosives ect. This is basically a fancy alcohol lamp. The by product of alcohol burning is water and carbon dioxide which is minimally toxic.
if you're burning Isopropyl alcohol, you are also making Carbon Monoxide. Denatured alcohol does burn a little cleaner but they both can make Carbon Monoxide.
Our geo-therm system died 4 years ago and they said it would cost minimum 100's and maximum 1000's to fix it. I bought terracotta plant pots and put one upside down on our gas stove with the burner turned to low, and it heats an 830 square foot set of rooms. It keeps the rooms at 70 - 72 degrees F, even when it is several degrees below freezing outside. We have a summer kitchen downstairs and do the same. When it gets to freezing well below zero outside, 8 or 10 degrees below freezing, we use our wood stove.
Great demonstration. We lose our power here so frequently. We have been using the gas stove for emergency heat in winter ❄️ when the loss of power occurs more frequently. However, after gas stoves are outlawed, we might want to use something like this in an emergency. It can get below freezing here, though not as much as it used to. I like your garden and greenhouse. And your bonsai trees are gorgeous.
I was thinking of Robert Murrey :) He did one with a simple candle but there's a metal cylinder (capped off at the top) hanging above the flame, just capturing the quickly rising heat to radiate outward. You might be able to make it even warmer adding on something like that :)
Not a bad idea....i would've put the jar down in a pot with sand around it then place another pot over the top...Would have been nice if you could've put it to test in a cold room and give an idea about how long they burn..Thanks for sharing.
It's a perfect opportunity for you to take your time for free and do exactly the thing that you're asking him to do. Just got to get off your ass that's all
Copper Oxide is a big problem above 350 degrees F. You can avoid this in a couple of ways. 1. Use Brass pipes - but the heat conductivity is up to 75% lower. 2 Use High Heat paint (like Rustoleum) to cover the copper pipes. Lowers heat conductivity only about 5% 3. Use Cerakote High-Temp Ceramic Coatings. Minimal heat loss at twice the temperature Remember to let the coatings cure completely according to manufacturers instructions to eliminate VOCs. Always use proper ventalation and CO detectors.
This is a great idea for improvement! I want to make these but also want to use a metal reservoir for safety. Having a mig makes this a pretty good project and the addition of a stainless screen globe would up the heating value immensely in my opinion and also afford a bit more protection.

I was initially concerned about the fire hazard, especially with the invisible flame, but the pot method provides some serious stability that improves the situation and increases the radiant heat.
to demonstrate the flame size, use a sheet of stainless steel gauze , wrapped to a 3inch pipe diameter and as tall as your flame. The sheet will glow cherry red with the flame and wont be damaged. It will enhance the radiant heat over one hundred percent.
I have experimented with various heat sources with less than desirable outcomes. I'm seriously looking at this as my next heating project. The clay pot and stainless mesh too. Awesome bonsai specimens!! I have a greenhouse and am a bonsai novice, besides the typical houseplants, and an area for starting plants for my garden.
2 Questions: 1. How do you put the fire out? 2. How many hours of burn time per quart size jar with denatured alcohol & reg alcohol per candle? Thank you
fire out by depriving it from OXYGEN so you create another metallic pipe larger diameter and cover the one burning so no oxygen no fire. NO NEED of gloves you weld or screw an extension pipe HANDLE and or make a spring like around the larger turn off pipe so you can easily handle it with direct hand kind of pipe over pipe but in this case ... spring over pipe, best option is either weld or screw a handle over the larger off pipe so you can turn off on the distance, safely.
5 gallon cold, 5 gallon hot tanks with a coil between the two circulating through that fuel candle with most of the copper coil insulated but a 2 foot stretch with aluminum fin(think baseboard)... the hot water tank submerged in a crate of sand... ... great idea... thanks for the inspiration
Thanks. Another difference between the JB Weld original and the JB Kwik is the original has a higher temperature rating. JB Weld original, and marine, are rated to 550 degrees, while the Kwik and the Clear are only rated to 200 degrees.
Thank you for sharing your genius UNLIMITED HEAT creation/invention. You could eventually develop your own company to make these unlimited heating items for sales to anyone who wants/needs them.
@ Perhaps, you should mention fire extinguishers any where there is an open flame; e.g., gas cook stoves, wood stoves, fireplaces, candles, et al. However, there is now a fire blanket that could work better to extinguish troublesome flames.
This is a MUCH better design than what I've tried before, I'm gonna have to do this one now. We heat by woodstove exclusively and my office is the only room that gets no heat and last month I ran a heater in here and my electricity bill jumped up by $124 and I was only using it at night! So I am looking for a better way to heat this little 14x15 space and this looks ideal. Thank you!
My wood stove is in the basement. I made holes in the floor, added grates over them, and stuck three computer fans (connected to the electricity with a power switch) just under the grates to move the warm air up faster. It's amazingly efficient.
FYI: Your lid tore when you drilled it because you're using a spade bit designed for wood. You should use a hole saw made for metal and you'll get a cleaner cut. I'll try this for my garage with the big flower pot. It gets quite cold out there. Thank you.
Great video! You would have to make sure that these heaters are in a safe place where children or pets could not get to them. Preferably, they would be on a tile or metal surface that would not catch fire if they were knocked over. One thing you did not mention is that denatured alcohol is expensive. So this would probably be more expensive than a central gas or oil heater, depending on market costs. New high-efficiency heat pumps designed for extreme cold weather also might be cheaper. However, as you mention, in emergency situations, this is a great solution.
I'm not an expert in any manner but if you wrap a thin thread around the wicking material before you try to pull it thru, I think it will be much easier to do. Sort of like when a Dr wraps a thread around your finger to ease a ring off after an injury. Even if you tie the thread, you can nip it and easily uncoil it after
It isn’t going to make a cold room toasty. It will just take the chill off. Anything bigger and you will use a lot of fuel. Electric heaters are near enough 100% efficient and you would spend just as much getting your room to the same temperature using this method. As he said it is for an emergency, not for saving money.
We should have a lot more programs dedicated to the teachings us all of how to be self sufficient and practical with how we survive in our manner of existence. Very much helpful and inspirational educational tools for our lives in our living.

Add to that the idea that by putting a few of these in a tomb, lighting them and then sealing the tomb, you would eventually burn out the oxygen in the room until the candle went out, at which point you would also slow down decay over time by oxidation, right?
I have 2 questions. 1. Approximately how many hours do you get from the different different sizes of pipes per jar full of fuel? 2. Will the clay pot break eventually from the heat? Thanks for sharing! It's a really interesting video! I think I'd like to make one of these for my greenhouse that I'll be building in the spring! A definite subscribe from me!
It's burning a drop of fuel every second probably,it also depends on the hight of the inner pipe sticking out,it's only unlimited in the sense of you need to refuel the jar,but the heater contraption is good for a long time.
Fantastic idea!! Tho I think I would drill the cover from the bottom onto a piece of wood. That may prevent the splitting of the metal. I wonder if spiraling a piece of cotton thread around that wick would help hold it in and make the threading of the smaller pipe into the larger easier. A popsicle stick might make mixing and applying the weld easier. And I hate wasting screws.
I remember as a kid my dad had old tobacco tins stuffed with a roll of toilet paper and soaked with alcohol to keep the ice fishing tent half decent warm. I’m going to get the materials for this and make it with my son.
Very nice indeed ! I hope there is NO danger to see the full or half-empty jar to explode if burning for a long time ! Can we be sure sure about that ? Thanks a lot.
Remember the old smudge pots that were used in Orange Groves in Florida, and along the roadside to mark construction??? Those "cannonball candles" would run for days on sludge fuel oil.... like my used motor oil... hint... and they even had a little metal cap on a chain to put them out!!! 😮😂❤😮😅 Old school, but time tested for my greenhouse!!!
The only question I could come up with is how do you put the flame out if you are not going to let it burn all of the fuel? Great idea, I will definitely make a few of these.
It's just a DIY oil lamp. Made one of these as a kid. You can take a ceramic flower pot and bury the jar in sand. It will create an insulator around the jar and decrease the chance of it being knocked over. The challenge for one of these with a large exhaust tube is just putting it out, as you need a container deep enough to sit over the entire wicking structure and narrow enough to sit on the lid. Dousing the flame is all about removing oxygen.
@sintanan469 which gets alot harder if it breaks and catches something else on fire. Just cuz you walked through a hail of bullets, doesn't mean bullets can't hurt you🙄
You could use a basting stitch (quick temporary stitch) on the carbon felt, with strong thread or fishing line with a very long tail. Then use the tail to help you pull it through the outer tube. Great video! Thanks for posting it!
I've been watching Dr. Smith for years. He is very much a genius. Please also mention, don't have children or pets around these glass candles. If they break you are in trouble.

You have a kind heart. However, did you listen to the part where he talked about the responsibility of using one of these? It would be irresponsible to hand these out. You have to be mindful and sober to light and keep an eye on one of these.
That's how you catch things on fire.
Very true
Easy breezy

At those temperatures, I think I'd be ignoring the outlawed thing
I was thinking of Robert Murrey :) He did one with a simple candle but there's a metal cylinder (capped off at the top) hanging above the flame, just capturing the quickly rising heat to radiate outward. You might be able to make it even warmer adding on something like that :)

Copper Oxide is a big problem above 350 degrees F. You can avoid this in a couple of ways.
1. Use Brass pipes - but the heat conductivity is up to 75% lower.
2 Use High Heat paint (like Rustoleum) to cover the copper pipes. Lowers heat conductivity only about 5%
3. Use Cerakote High-Temp Ceramic Coatings. Minimal heat loss at twice the temperature
Remember to let the coatings cure completely according to manufacturers instructions to eliminate VOCs.
Always use proper ventalation and CO detectors.
Thanks for the heads up!

2. How many hours of burn time per quart size jar with denatured alcohol & reg alcohol per candle?

@kathykerwin1294 cut off the oxygen, the heat goes out. I guess you'd need welding gloves.
My question exactly.
fire out by depriving it from OXYGEN so you create another metallic pipe larger diameter and cover the one burning so no oxygen no fire.

You can put it out with a random sock or rag. Depriving it of oxygen puts it out inan instant. Or a coffee cup.

Thank you!
a small space is NOT ideal when you are using, in effect, a carbon monoxide generator. be VERY wary
get a fan, move the air a bit.
If it took that much electricity to heat that area, this little candle isn't going to be noticed much
My wood stove is in the basement.

Even if you tie the thread, you can nip it and easily uncoil it after
I was thinking about running a needle and thread through the vent holes. Maybe a combination of the two will work well.

They hate incompetent democrat administrations even more....
Just found your channel and subscribed!
I never would have thought about this, brilliant!!!!!
Robert Murray Smith, good on you for this excellent idea, thank u!
I love this idea!
Thanks so much for sharing and I look forward to seeing other video's!!!!
Awesome, thank you!
You can ream out the inside of the pipe with just a simple pocket knife. In plumbing we use what's called a "deburring" tool. Not expensive and handy when doing other craft type projects.
And a lot of those cutters come with an attached deburring tool
Thank you! This is really good information and will come in handy. Something every homeowner and prepper should be aware of. Does Home Depot have that carbon felt? How much does it cost? PS, I checked and yes, Home Depot has it, and only about $11 for their "Carbon Felt Welding Blanket" which is 27" x 12". Not bad!
Which one last longest? Yes love Robert Murry, watched his channel for years. How long does each last? U could add one of those heat power fans.
@@l0I0I0I0 he says for a very long time, as long as you add fuel.
@@jenniferdavis3776 How do you add more fuel?
Put it out, of course, and let it cool but then the 'duration' is instantly rendered moot...
@amzarnacht6710 I guess I wasn't explaining it to your level. I'm sorry. 😊
I've been looking for the perfect SHTF heating solution. Found it! I came, I saw, I subscribed! Great stuff! Now, about that drill hole opening, those uneven carbon material cuts and screw-based JB application. Can you do a video cleaning all that up? I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important 😀
Awesome! Thank you! I’ll consider cheers
