  • Is the Ford Barra the most overrated engine of all time? Lets find out.
    A go to for every engine conversion rev head is the 4.0L DOHC Ford Barra engine. Big cubes, robust bottom end, they are unbeatable and make 1000hp easy... right? RIGHT?
    In this video, we'll put the Ford Barra under the microscope and see just how good it is, or if its in fact overrated.

    One thing not mentioned here is the reason the falcon 6cyls were so good as they could do extremely high mileage due to the cast iron the blocks were made from. In Reco shops i worked in it was rare to see a falcon with excessive wear in the bores in fact we did not see many falcons at all compared with holdens etc. Even with a power hone it always took longer to hone out a falcon block after boring than it did a holden etc. This is the main reason they were to go to vehicle for Taxi work.

    As an AU owner, my opinion is that the shock of the ugly looks has subsided for most people and they have now realised how good of a mechanical package the AU is (or was, seeing as how old they are now).

    Great video, the original 250, that came out in the early 1970's, was almost indestructible back then. And Ford kept developing from that for over 50 years, designed for Australia's harshest conditions, that is why I believe the Barra, is the ultimate 6 pack, designed for reliability first, and foremost.

    Hey, hey, hey, lets not throw too much shade at the mighty AU! Yes, it may have been a sales flop, but that was only because it looked different. They ate far from being a lemon! Mechanically far superior in almost every way to other Falcons that came before or after it! The AU IRS is the best Ford ever made. It may only have one cam, but as you said, the Intech is just as capable with some money thrown at it. Also, in my opinion, the best looking and most comfortable interior of any Falcon! I'm not a fan fanboy though! 😝

It was a Wheels editor who started a narrative about the waterfall grill & the rest of the loser motoring press were to spineless to disagree. Rods and gears and valvetrain, oh my! Sure they're a great engine, but realistically they're the humble 60's 200-cube six, first stroked to 250ci and then head-swapped for more modern architecture. They are long-stroke, well-breathing engines but you're in big-time rebuild town no matter what you're doing if you're looking performance.
    The up-side is that you can fit a fair few bits on the cheap if you have one of the older jobs, even pushrod equipped XF falcons - the best selling Aussie car ever. Some pushrods, a cam, some 200ci Mustang cast pistons... those things will be at stock nat-asp Barra numbers in no time without. Now there's a sleeper for you!

    Hmmm as someone who has owned a couple of dozen AUs all the hate was just b/s. AU1 was a different car to AU2/3.
    Personally I feel they were a decent looking car and they drove quite well. And the engines did not sound like a collection of paper clips! Rattledore! And no pogo sticks like the Bombadore.
    A proper smooth double wishbone suspension with a smooth engine. That you could get in and drive 8 hours without feeling totally wrung out.
    As for the BA?? It was an IRS AU but with all the weight screwed round. Heavier engine, fuel tank under the back seat and less boot room. Strange car in someways though did most things right,, once the dealer actually aligned the rear supposed to be done in the $999 predelivery. But they will make noisy tyres sound bloody awfull, put these tyres on an AU and the noise mostly goes away. Ride hard and noisy on 17" wheels but ok on OEM 16s. And get twice as many km from a set of tyres than a similar Crapadore.
    The twincam engine has more poke than the single cam, though not a huge amount. The turbos were a different thing, plenty of power though the experts told me modded to 320k is as safe as they are. Later ones are better.
    Base engine is in reality a 1959 144ci Falcon 6. Lengthened in about 1970 for the 250 ci capacity. Shared with the 200. A good standard base engine, reliable smooth and reasonably economical.. The 1976 cross flow went better and was reliable. Alloy head 1 ditto, alloy head 2 however ate rockers. I used to buy 2 dozen at a time. They also chewed up cams.
    The original OHC engine had some basic issues, partly caused through cheap oil or prolonged services. The 3.9 multipoint was a good sharp engine, to me a better towcar engine than the EB 4.0. Why? Intake design I feel.
    I currently pwn 3 FG utes, all quite different. A R6 08 with 5 speed auto and enough gearing to go to the moon, a 4 speed auto LPG 09 that has been quite good. Though NOT towing as the tranny gets hot and runs back in third gear. And a 14 base model LPG with 12-1comp with 6 speed auto. That is the best to drive and with LPG half the price or less than petrol currently ticks most boxes.
    Meanwhile the opposition had torqueless noisy SAAB V6s and worse some Opel shitbox with front drive.

    Lots of good points, personally im a 1j fan , most parts are surprisingly easy to get your hands on at most auto shops as they share alot of parts as the na 2j which came in australia in the mark 4 supra , and the amount of people who broght over soarers and mark 3 supras , and then all the front cuts that ended up in cars, before barra the world and ls the world it was jz the world and because alot of people did motor conversions with them means it made abit of demand in the australian market, yes prices are through the roof these days but to make the 600rwkws in a stock 1jz all youd need is head studs (and a gasket and bearing kit depending on how many kms or how hard its lifes been) and all the bolt ons like the barra , no you cant go to a wrecker and get any part of a taxi to fix them but not much goes wrong with them, and for street ablility they may not have the torque of a barra but unless you have a monster turbo they have enough torque to not be sluggish in a 1-1.4ish tonne car on the street , and because of their shorter stroke you can rev them alot harder too .... and lets not forget their sweet sweet sounds they make .... this is all my personal oppinion and like i said im a big 1j fan having had one for the last 4 or so years

    That was definitely not a fair comparison. A $600 market place engine vs a crate motor is not a comparison. You can buy 350s etc 5L and even 2jz GE off market place for about the same money. The 2jz GE will handle the same power with the same upgrades and you don't need to change rods or oil pumps. The 1jz will so the same. The LS will cope with that power fairly standard. Remember you aren't adding in the turbo and accessories. Several engines out there that can make that power without pushing them. Even an RB cam do it if you setup properly. In fact you could probably piece together an rb2530 for around 2500-3000 not including turbo or ecu or injectors. Don't get me wrong, barras have their place and they are basically the new age JZ engine. But if you're going to actually so a comparison do it properly

    The insane stroke of nearly 100mm is it's major downfall imo, would probably be a better engine if they just destroked the hell out of it and made it square or oversquare. I also despise timing chains, all the best inline 6 engines of old had timing belts and they work fantastically. Chains add so much complexity with guides and lubrication

    • @zbeasty
      @zbeasty 2 роки тому

      You can get a destroke crank but they aren't cheap and you end up with reduced capacity. I don't think there is enough in the bore to keep the capacity while making at even square let alone oversquare.

    • @lockjawjak
      @lockjawjak 2 роки тому

      @@zbeasty it doesn't matter about reducing the capacity, the bore is huge anyway. Its just about getting piston speeds to a more reasonable level, as well as rod angles. A lot of high end tuners have destroked old engines in order to push more power without boring them out because the engine is less likely to fail due to a better rod/stroke ratio. Nothing a few psi of boost wont make up for anyway, and you can rev the engine higher which more than makes up for the loss of capacity.
      At the end of the day you are always limited by the turbo not the engines displacement

    • @nordic5490
      @nordic5490 Рік тому

      Belts are unreliable that is the reason most manufacturers have gone back to chains. If designed properly most chain driven engines will last the life of the rest of the engine, while a belt driven one will need multiple replacements. The unreliability factor is the reason most moved back to chains as broken timing belts before the scheduled time are bad news for sales and brand reputation.

      @@BroomysGarage the vortec 4200 stuff just has no aftermarket support. The only off the shelf performance oreinted items for them is an exhaust manifold flange, schneider reground cams and some forged rods made by molnar. Everything else has to be 1 off custom stuff. The engine debuted in a 2005 drag week video 1320 did, in a nova wagon and the car it debuted in ran great was one of the fastest cars there and was rumored to have made over 1000hp at the time, but it got DQ'd cause he was caught trailering it from track to track so the car was basically black listed from any sort of media coverage besides that 1320video which was only available on DVD through them, also the shop who built the engine was super duper secretive and wouldnt give you the time of day unless you had your wallet out with $ in hand. Since the engine only came in SUV's it almost got no attention. Honestly if it wasnt for all the hype around the barra no one wouldve even found out about the vortec 4200. They are pretty slept on, the guy pushing them now has made 750 reliably through a th400 with just $150 valvesprings meant for a 2jz and reground stock cams, and a $600 balancer meant to help with harmonics at 7500rpm. It's overrated af. Shit just breaks on them and they actually can't handle that much power unless you drop a house deposit into it. Engine also isn't cheap to build up. They also don't pull as hard as people think, stock form they're slugs. 300-400rwkw they still get chopped by cars such as rs3, a45 amg, mustangs...
    They're decent engines but definitely overhyped

      Ha ha ha. Plenty of 100% dead stock $200 ex taxi green top barras making 480rwkw on e85, completely unopened, crazy valve float and all !
      480rwkw = 650rwhp = 750crank hp assume 15% loss.
      How much is your rs3 or a45 amg ? That $200 750 hp engine has monster toque due to its long stroke design, something the rs3 or a45 does not have. Area under curve makes for a better street car.

      @@nordic5490 doesn't matter how much power your stupid barra makes, still go slow as. A 500rwkw barra wouldn't stand a chance against a rs3/a45 making 300kw. Just embarrassing, all power and still no go. They just spin and lost traction. Most pointless cars to mod up. Hope every barra car out there is written off
