@@EverythingFuzzY Be interesting to see the FG mk2 engine as it would seem a backwards step to have the skinny rods while upping the compression so much.
@@5lcalais1 , thanks for your reply. Calling the con-rods that Barra six engines other than the “green top” E-gas engines got, then later, the turbocharged engines got,, as “skinny” is probably inaccurate. I expect the E-gas (carbureted LPG) engines got the thicker con-rods to resist bending if a back-fire occurs in the intake manifold when an intake valve is still open for a cylinder with a piston travelling up the cylinder. Such a situation is probably impossible with the (liquid phase EFI of LPG) EcoLPI engines, because their intake manifolds should only ever have air in them (no fuel mixture). As for the EcoLPI Barra engine’s 12:1 compression ratio, even higher compression may have been considered, but I expect the lowest equivalent octane rated LPG available at fuel station pumps had to be allowed for. The standard EcoLPI engines generate more torque & power than the naturally aspirated petrol Barra sixes. They’re excellent! One would think it’d have been better from a logistical & reliability standpoint, for Ford to have equipped all later Barra six engines with the thicker con-rods introduced in the E-gas engine. Do you have any links to factual information about the EcoLPI engine’s connecting rods that you can share here? I’d be interested to read more. Cheers. 🚙
I assume the FG one is the ecoLPI one with the LPG injection, while the other 2 have the LPG down the throttle body setup, like old down the carby throat LPG setups. If I’m right then the FG one will have injectors while the others won’t.

Good video. My theory on why people incorrectly think the BA green top has the spaghetti rods is because early BA turbo engines only had the weak rods.
@@maxgood42 They would be lighter for slightly better throttle response due to a slightly lighter spinning mass. They would not gain you better power and you run the risk of bending one or two if you have a backfire. That's why Ford fitted stronger rods in the first place. If you want better power (and probably better economy) a less restrictive exhaust system and a set of extractors is far less messing about. a K&N or BMC re usable air filter and a Territory duct may help too.
@@jamesforge8107 yeah didn’t think of that plus I guess it may mess up the secondary balance too. Was also thinking about taking off the lpg throttle body and using a 255 mixer in place like the factory VT gas has
@@maxgood42 I have a dual fuel BA. I fitted it with the Egas throttle body. Yeah it's a restriction but it was a massive improvement over the mixer ring that was silasticed into the duct. More power and better economy. Never crossed my mind to use VT parts. It's all about to be replaced with an Egas engine running petrol injection and LPG vapour injection. With it's slightly higher compression and the vapour injection it should run better on LPG and on Petrol (probably 95 octane) than it ever has.
Can you fit a turbo valve in a stock green top ? I don't know much about barras just what I've seen and hurd. I'm looking at a barra swap for my xa falcon.
Pretty sure you can, but i haven't tried. Might be cheaper to find a second hand turbo head with the valves already in. Atomic Inconel valves are $53 each and a barra needs 24 of them! Thanks for watching!
@@Twistedvideo costs about the same to source a turbo head, my cousin did this and it worked well (gas block + turbo head) when his early model xr6t blew up

Thanks for the video. Very informative. Have been looking online for video showing removal of Fg intake manifold a I have heard that it is a very fiddily/ tedious exercise. I need to swap out my LPG injectors so any info would be helpful. Can’t seem to find anything online. 👍
I've read that the ecoLPI motor has 12:1 compression pistons but they went back to skinny 1R23 rods. BA gas pistons are 10.7:1 and BF gas went to 10.3:1. Thanks for watching!
Were are you located? I've got a BA EGAS and I did an SCT Flash tune and Change the Exhaust with Extractors. I literally got 10kw more. The Tuner said my motor wasn't getting enough LPG that was the main problem. I can't remember what he said about a new specific mixer would boost up the power and change the DOHC to a Kelford Cam. I've had this car many year's it literally never missed a beat. Extremely reliable as i have always Used Nulon 15-40 Diesel and Irridum spark plugs. Always up to date. It has 245,000km. Would it be worth changing the Cams and retuning? Not because i want serious gain's but i just love driving this comfortable car and it's just still sluggish. Worse before the SCT FLASH AND EXHAUST system What's your opinion?
G day good honest video thank you I have a track car I am designing I was planning on using an old 173 red motor and a lot of my accumulated spares but my weekend car might need it now So I started looking at Barras then complete doners for motor box and diff BAs in particular Not being overly familiar with modern motors let alone Ford's offerings would you have suggestion for a NA motor that's the easiest to get running without the main body loom ? Yeah just like the timing cover, there is no sump gasket on the BF, only rtv silicone. Still has half moon seals on the ends of the sump though, thats where BF leaks, the rubber shrinks and goes brittle. Put plenty of rtv on new half moon seals so it can never happen again.
Most fga engine can be turbocharged with out changing pistons hence extra oil passage splash grooves on pistons the others have to be changed to fga piston to turbo charge but there is 12 piston variants standard 16 turbo spec pistons

Good Vid , Nicely Done ! Another difference that iv'e noticed between my BF motor and the BA .Is the Sump , on my BF sump it has the mounting lugs for the Trans cooler . i think the BA is cooled through the radiator . I just got a 2003 , 220 Kl'm BA to replace my 2006, 338899 Kl'm with head gasket gone , still ran great , not hot , just foamed up the rocker box , I just put a liter of coolant in it every day , so other than do the head (Which could be cracked ? So i was told ) Some pitting on the cams in the BF. so I just got the 220kl'm BA . On the Knock sensors My BF had 2 and the BA 1 will that be a problem ? Or just add the 2 to the BA motor ?

Hey, the FG mk1 engine has dipstick holes for both front and rear sumps. If you’re using a bf engine you’ll need to drill a dipstick hole for the rear sump and plug the front hole.
Hi mate, i have a green top in a BA falcon Ute. It has just developed a water leak which i think is a head gasket problem as the oil is contaminated with water. I am going to buy another green top for my ute from the wreckers but i was thinking of stripping down the old motor with the possibility of turning it into a green top turbo. Can you run a straight gas set up with a turbo? Regards, Peter

So basically, a gas motors good for a budget build if it's low K and if you can only get a high K gassy needing a tear down anyway, might aswell start with any old donk and chuck some decent rods/pistons at it.. Will need valve springs, pump gears and timing kit anyway if it's anything but half assed

Cheers. 🚙
great video buddy, i bought a fg gas but it had injectors, dose that mean its not a gas engine? and how and i find out if it is a gas
Hey quick question 🙋♂️ would a gas bf engine go straight into an fg
The crack of a head bolt is satisfying enough. But to hear it get time laps like that sounds awesome too!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
I assume the FG one is the ecoLPI one with the LPG injection, while the other 2 have the LPG down the throttle body setup, like old down the carby throat LPG setups. If I’m right then the FG one will have injectors while the others won’t.
@@mickvonbornemann3824 No, FG mk1 had the LPG down the throttle same as the others. FG mk2 was ecoLPI and i have another video on that engine too, check it out!
A well needed video to end the gas boy questions. Great job 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Where in the world can you find a $1xx Ba engine? Please enlighten me, thanks.
Awesome video mate, i know this was about rods but seeing as you talked about sumps and timing chains, maybe coulda talked about the differences with the cam phasers when you you were pulling them apart
Cheers and thanks for watching! What do you believe the differences are in the cam phasers? i can check it out and have a look for you.
@@EverythingFuzzY rumor has it that the very early ba phasers have less physical movement than later ones ✌️
@bin chicken boi I'll have a look at the phasers during the week when i have them apart again and let you guys know what i find. I've never heard that rumour before so will be interesting to find out!
use a pick on the brittle conectors to break them less. still would repin them to new connectors or ones from spare harnesses in the back of the shop
Try and grab a 4n1(3/4/5) Mitsubishi engine for a project. All aluminum and one of the only diesel engines on the market (maybe the only one IIRC) with variable valve timing (intake). I doubt they will ever sell them in Australia again, as they removed them from their vehicle lineup (not overseas though).
Hey just wondering if my 10/2005 bf wagon factory gas have the bigger rods as that seems to be the general thought that they have the small rods but arent too sure and cant find anything anywhere thanks
G'Day Mr Fuzzy,,Mate love this sorta sruff,,as for the BF cam shaft pitting,,have seen this sorta thing on BIG gear boxs, where the surface finish wernt up to spec,,the only other thing i could say and i really don't know, the coatings on cam running surface is chromed and the chroming was the factor to pitting,,May be oil was not good enough to remove hydraulic pressure between componants,,and oil is injected in to metal surface,,we used to call this spawling,,
Just a Fun fact,,Did you now the oil in your hypoid diff evaporate between wearing surfaces,,under extreme loads..
Yeer didn;t beleive it me self,,but for sure,,again thanks for sharing,,
Edit::
BIG gea box has 30 ton gears in them,,and run on white metal bearing carfully scrapped,(by Me),,
Are these differences the same between the turbo variance?
my BF 2 green top had no knock sensors or the wiring. I had to buy them when i converted to petrol. weird.
Great vid mate, thanks for uploading!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@EverythingFuzzY one thing I’ve struggled finding a picture of is the Barr’s engine number location. I’m building a bf xr6t for circuit work which is supposed to have a green top in it, trying to identify if it actually is. Great info on the bf block having both front and rear dipstick provisions
Great video, keep up the good work
This is fantastic. Thanks for this video. It’s been really handy.
Thanks for watching!
mate quality work well done, and editing was classic, brilliant
Much appreciated!
Is there a silver top ba lpg or is that just a symptom of something else
What's the difference between the BA green top and the xr6 Barra?. BTW loved the video
Quick question. Regarding manual transmission b ana f series vehicles, do they share the same trans sandwich plate as the autos. Cheers
Good video. My theory on why people incorrectly think the BA green top has the spaghetti rods is because early BA turbo engines only had the weak rods.
I agree, mate. Thanks for watching!
Same, so if I was to put spaghetti rods in my stock lpg ba would they be lighter for a better power (not race but work ute) ?
Very informative mate. Answered many of my questions. Cheers
Glad to hear it!
@@EverythingFuzzY okay thanks heaps. I was thinking xr6 motor but not sure as to how much I'll be able to afford. Thank you for your insight.
@@Twistedvideo costs about the same to source a turbo head, my cousin did this and it worked well (gas block + turbo head) when his early model xr6t blew up
@@EXZACHTPERFORMANCE okay cool I'll keep that in mind thanks. Roman
came for the barra goodness, stayed for the taste in music. Sick!
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for watching
Fantastic video! Thank you for taking the time to put this information out for everyone, I’m definitely a Berra fanboy but I’ll every own one lol. The ones that have already been imported are crazy expensive unfortunately
My pleasure, it's been a great learning experience for sure! Thanks for watching.
It is a terrific video....assuming you are overseas by your comments...Some don't know there is another amazing inline Ford straight six available and also capable of huge upgrading ..It's actually what the Barra evolved from and concluded in 2002 .. It was /is the 4.0 SOHC Intech .... Bottom end essentially the same as Barra but the head is single overhead cam and a few other differences ..I have an FG XR6 N/A Barra and an AU Futura with a beautiful sweet running Intech...love them both
Thanks for the video. Very informative. Have been looking online for video showing removal of Fg intake manifold a I have heard that it is a very fiddily/ tedious exercise. I need to swap out my LPG injectors so any info would be helpful. Can’t seem to find anything online. 👍
Can anyone tell me which series engine version has the highest comp ratio?
Worse before the SCT FLASH AND EXHAUST system
What's your opinion?
G day good honest video thank you
I have a track car I am designing I was planning on using an old 173 red motor and a lot of my accumulated spares but my weekend car might need it now
So I started looking at Barras then complete doners for motor box and diff BAs in particular
Not being overly familiar with modern motors let alone Ford's offerings would you have suggestion for a NA motor that's the easiest to get running without the main body loom ? Thank you for your time
So am I able to do this conversion and take the fg series 1 green top engine with the original fg rear sump and put it in my mkii bf
(Bf is factory rear sump also)??
Obviously do internals and big snail 🙄🤣
But will this motor go right in like the factory bf engine it being a rear sump barra ?
do the fg gas grey top have thick rods?
Whats with the golden oil stained head is that because of high kms? Or lack of oil changes? Good vid 👍
That's what i've been told. Also the use of cheap oil maybe.

Here's an off the planet question for you fuzz
If someone wanted z 4 cylinder bar
Engine as ive called it
How close to near impossible would it be to do it
Beyond maybe your ability
And mine
But not Beyond
Someone's
Too bad they never made an econobox 2.6ltr 4cylinder bar motor
Awesome video!
Any chance of looking at the EcoLpi motor?
Thanks for watching! Yup I’m working on it 👍
Love the music, top idea for a video mate
So I’m looking to bara swap my ford ranger one day what’s the best ones to look for? like for big power say 800+ I know they are relatively bulletproof but I want to know a few of the better ones to build and some of the goods and bads of each please somebody thank you
Did they get the 4l60e in Australia? I see the mid 90's 4l60e laying on the ground in the background of the video.
We got the 4l60e in the Commodore. That gearbox from is from my old Holden Statesman.
The BA uses a different sump gasket to the BF as well.
Yep, that's correct, I forgot to add that bit in. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Does that mean when doing a conversion on a green top you have to do the valves aswell
I don't think so, people are making decent power with the stock gas head and valves. Check out my other video comparing the NA, Turbo, Gas engines, i talk a little more about the valves. Thanks for watching!
what where the cams like on the BA
Almost perfect, I’m very surprised how clean that engine was considered its high km.
may i know which garage u bought from ??thanks
Or just add the 2 to the BA motor ?
great video, super informative for he newbies like myself, cheers
Awesome video mate 👌
Thanks for watching!
Hi great video, have you given thought about doing a video on the, au Tickford engine and the intech Tickford engine,I believe that a Tickford engine is better than a Barra engine regards Siegfried of geelong Vic.
hey i have a bf engine and i needed to change to rear sump so i was told to put a fg sump and windage tray on it all fits well but nowhere for the dipstick to go now , can you help ?? is there a way or do i need to run the original front sump or get a fg engine
Hey, the FG mk1 engine has dipstick holes for both front and rear sumps. If you’re using a bf engine you’ll need to drill a dipstick hole for the rear sump and plug the front hole.
So is the petrol engine the same spec as the with the rod size's and valves ? great vid thanks
Thanks for watching! New video coming out soon that will answer your questions!
Regards,
Peter
Head gasket usually
15:55 legit aye, snaped one off was like oh shit, put it back and just been praying that it stays on. that was 15000kms ago
Haha, same on my EB Barra mate! only just recently saw you can buy new replacement connectors on ebay. I'll have to order a few!
My coil packs plugs on my daily Mitsubishi challenger are the same type and they all snapped off 🙄 Just put zip ties around em to hold em in 🤷♂️🤣
It's a shit box though and soon to be replaced with a falcon or a territory, something barra 👌
Same here. I'll have to order some too
Does that mean all three models of gas engine is better for a turbo application rather than an na engine
Great video mate...lots good info. Thanks for putting in the time. Are all these going to be turbo converted?
Thanks for watching, Ben!
For now one is going to have a turbo and I’m working on a video of it at the moment.
This was mind blowing to see! I love how simple you made it and I think I now want one in LPG. Do you do engine conversions mate? Subscribed and will check out your other videos.
@Padma Dorjee feel free to email me info@everythingfuzzy.com.au
I've heard that the FG-X Turbo engines are the same as the FG-X Non-Turbo engines. Have you heard this as well and if so, is it true?
So basically, a gas motors good for a budget build if it's low K and if you can only get a high K gassy needing a tear down anyway, might aswell start with any old donk and chuck some decent rods/pistons at it..
Will need valve springs, pump gears and timing kit anyway if it's anything but half assed
Yup, i've been saying it for a while now.
It's actually cheaper to buy a junkyard motor and build it up than to buy a turbo motor. Prices have skyrocketed lately.
which one has the stronger bottom end? thanks
Is it weird that my old boy has a BF dedicated gas wagon that doesn’t have a green cover?
Great stuff, good backing music.
What's the difference between the coloured tops.? Mine is an '05 which is black.
Black = petrol
Green = gas/LPG
Red = turbo
@@YZJBTa. 😁
Great video and content dude, keep it up!
Appreciate it!
Just out of curiosity where does the oil from the turbo return to with an na motor?
There's a casting for the drain, you'll just have to drill the holes out and tap into the flange
I'm thinking about doing my first turbo Barra conversion into a CL Chrysler Wagon.
There's so many different options available
Any suggestions on best Model engine/gearbox and would be appreciated as I'm on the hunt
I'm not very familiar with the Chrysler stuff I'm afraid so i couldn't tell you what will work best. if you dont plan on turboing it i'd be looking into the BF engine for sure.
