@@Nick-oo5lh Yeah, a lot of people seem to miss the point that the prophecy was manufactured and forced to become true. Channi was the only one who didnt drink the "Messiah" koolaid. Paul also knew it was all bs, but he played the part because he foresaw visions of destruction and he could mitigate the damage if he was in control. The books went into Paul's struggle with essentially "playing God'
The ending isn't a "good guy wins" ending like people think. The true winner was Paul's mother who successfully indoctrinated tens of millions of people through religion and installed her son as the "Messiah" to kick off a holy war that would end up with a billion deaths.

Denis had to make so many difficult choices in order to make the films both satisfying to those who know the books and also approachable for those who don’t. I’ve been thinking about Dune in comparison to the Lord of the Rings. Both are excessively challenging books to adapt to the screen but Jackson had the advantage of a very clear and direct core story of good versus evil. Dune is so nuanced and thrives in the shades of gray. I feel that Denis was in a position where he had to add contrast and push elements like the Harkonnens into more of a black and white portrayal in order to keep the story coherent for newcomers. I would have wanted more of the gray, but overall he did a masterful job in a near impossible situation. Bravo Denis!

1:32 I feel like this comment is completely false right? Duke Leto went to Arrakis because the emperor was taking the planet away from the Harkonnens and “giving” it to the Atreides. The first movie showed multiple times how Leto didn’t really want to go there and was worried they were being setup by the emperor.
I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that Duke Leto wanted to go there?!?….. once he was given the planet, he definitely wanted to use the Fremen and “desert power” to their advantage….. but he didn’t really want to be going there in the first place.

    Watched last night.
    A bit conflicted.
As a move experience, it was fantastic! Timothee was so strong as a lead. He was just excellent. I got chills a few times.
However, I did not like the heavy story line with Jessica talking to Aria. Not sure why that was included.
The compressed timeline- the war was years not months,Aria played a key role in the last battle.
The ending with Chauni walking away 😤 she plays an important role in Paul’s life. so honestly, not liking some of the changes in major story-lines from the book.
But as a stand alone sequel, judging away from the book, it was an EXCELLENT MOVIE.

    • @BetaBreaking
      @BetaBreaking 8 місяців тому +21

Paul did say at some point after he gained his prescience that Chani would forgive him, so there's always that.
They compressed the story for convenience and a more streamlined experience for the general audience. I was also kind of disappointed by Alia's exclusion but she would have made the movie way too dense and exposition heavy, they needed to focus on Paul's story and war against the Imperium and Harkonnen's. Plus it would be hard to have a 3 year old trying to talk like a wise old lady

    • @simonsin666
      @simonsin666 8 місяців тому +11

I agree. Chani's character is much stronger than they portrayed her. And I dont recall the belief difference between the north and south. The only thing the Fremen seemed unsure of was the unnerving presence of Alia. Who of which became a fierce warrior herself.

I didn't read the complete book, but I feel the whole vengeance arc of Paul was a good replacement for a random 3 yo killing grown men. Using Jessica's pregnancy to show the pass of time was a good idea, and she and her daughter talking to each other was sinister.
Dune is a very comvoluted and political book, so obviously adapting it to the big screen will take some elements away.
The story arc of Jessica was pretty cool, showing this obsessive side of her wanting to control the Fremen through the prophecy. I was her way to prove to the Reverend Mother that she was wrong, and Jessica indeed gave birth to the One.
Chani was okay for the most part. Her moments of rebellion against the idea of the Messiah were great, especially the scene where Jessica forces her to fulfit the prophecy.
You said it. It's an excellent movie and sequel. And a very good adaptation overall.

Teenage Fremen are worm-riders, this is his last 'test' as far as 'he is young, he can learn our ways' The path to manhood, being a Fremen. In the books Stilgar even lays into him about how many risks he took getting to/on the worm, reminding him again teenagers do it.

To me the first movie was a 7/10. This one is a lot better but I think people are overhyping it. I'd give it an 8/10. If the conclusion in Messiah rounds up the trilogy well I might give Part 2 a retrospective 8.5/10. Paul becomes hard to root for since he's just on another level once he drinks the Water of Life and that makes everything feel like less of a struggle and therefore kind of trivial.

Very telling that he isn’t ready for leading like this. Emperor was correct about his father leading from his heart, and Paul is the same. It’ll most likely be his downfall. 1) it would have been more obvious that “oh hey right after we wiped out the Atreides some new guy shows up a few weeks later, I bet it’s the same guy!”
    2) we lost a lot of emotional connection with Paul and Chani by not having Leto at Sietch Tabr (and also her taking the role of concubine).
    3) Gurney and the smugglers felt too rushed for his relationship with them.

Bingo! It was a great movie, but as it started closing in on the end, I started falling away from it. Chani riding away (because instead of understanding his political duty, she is angry he is becoming this prophecy like he said he wouldn't), Alia not being born, and Paul killing the Baron - it all rubbed me the wrong way and I found myself disappointed. But, yeah, it was all due to a (frankly) unnecessary time crunch. With movie lengths now, they could have easily added another half hour (or less really) to make the timeline right and no one would have batted an eye.

Frank Herbert states it clearly in Dune that the Baron is fat. It is due to a curse put on him by the bene gesserit I believe.
"As [Baron Vladimir Harkonnen] emerged from the shadows, his figure took on dimension - grossly and immensely fat. And with subtle bulges beneath folds of his dark robes to reveal that all this fat was sustained partly by portable suspensors harnessed to his flesh. He might weigh two hundred Standard kilos in actuality, but his feet would carry no more than fifty of them."

Enjoyed the movie a lot. Can't wait for part 3. The only issues I had was the way time flowed in the middle of the film. I don't think the scenes conveyed much in that sense, you just kind of had to know the scenes were moving at a faster timeline than what had been shown up to the part where Paul started training as a fremen. Maybe Paul doing a monologue of how much time he's spent with that group of fremen. The flow just felt off, like scenes just put in random order. I figured it has a lot to do with the movie length so I understand.

one detail you missed: when paul kills the baron, he kills him by stabbing him in the left side of his neck and he says "you die like an animal". both of these details refer to the gom jabbar test and paul is showing he's a superior being than his harkonnen ancestors.
while there are several differences from the book and movie, most of the changes in the film are superior to me since they show the deeper theme better than the book did.

This shows that Denis Villeneuve has been visionary in his ambition to adapt a sf classic and making it appealing to generations of readers and non readers. The original book was in three parts, and Messiah is just part four, for the most part. Much of it was already written when the first book was released. But everything after that was obviously written because the publisher wanted to sell more books. I can't imagine God Emperor being made into anything anyone would want to watch. Hell, I couldn't even finish reading the book. I barely finished Children. I loved the first two books, but things went seriously off the rails after that.

Herbert conceived of Dune / DM and CoD as a complete cycle loosely based on classic Greek tragic trilogy the Oresteia by Aeschylus. The Oresteia is a sequence about the rise and fall of a great King and how his children pick up the pieces of the kingdom after. The Oresteia follows the ancient Greek heroic House of "Atreus" and deals with issues of revenge, vendetta and fate.

@@charlesajones77 "everything after that was obviously written because the publisher wanted to sell more books" lol No. Just because you couldn't finish it doesn't make Herbert an opportunistic hack. "I finally just took out my ideas about how long it "should" be. I started building from the back. Where does it have to go? So parts of Children of Dune and Dune Messiah were already written before I completed Dune." - Frank Herbert "The Sparks Have Flown" from The Maker of Dune - Insights of a Master of Science Fiction.

I don't like them changing the fact that Paul only used the nukes on the Shield Wall, not the Harkonnens, and certainly not the Spice. He was going to use changed Water of Life on a Pre-Spice mass to disrupt the cycle. He skirted the law but very purposely didn't break it.
Chani was just as happy to be concubine as Jessica was and encouraged the marriage to Irulan. She knew just how to keep her in her place anyway. It feels like they took that agency away from her. Chani was a total BAMF and sister wives were an acceptable practice in the Fremen culture.
I'm confused on how the timeline is going to go if Alia wasn't born by the end, it takes 2 years for Muad'Dib to be ready to take over the Empire. He has to have time to teach the Fremen the Weirding way.
It's so weird the things they change for what seems like no reason and ends up changing a lot of the story.
