    Okay, you spice heads! After a long wait, Dune: Part Two is finally here and it’s a big one. In adapting the second part of the first 1965 Dune novel, Denis Villeneuve has done the impossible: Bring one of the most beloved and complicated sci-fi books ever, to life, in a way that’s never really been done before.
    An empire rules over the galaxy, but two houses, the evil Harkonnens and the noble Atreides, are old enemies. Long story short, the Haronnens wipe aout almost all the Atreides except for Paul and his mother Jessica. Jessica is a space witch called a Bene Gesserit, and Paul is basically a chosen one Messiah of the natives of Aarrakis. Paul has special powers, like seeing the future and the jedi mind trick [clip]. He ended the last movie with the Fremen people, plotting revenge against the people who murdered his house.

    People bring up Butlers performance as Feyd as the stand out but, while good, it's just one note: a psychopath. Javier Bardem is the real star of the movie. He brings humor, a fatherly understanding, leadership and eventually fanaticism to his role and he blends them all seamlessly. Bardem is just so good in this movie, it's a masterclass of a performance.

    There was some giggling in the cinema at the beginning of the movie when some of the dialogue of Paul and Stilgar was taken straight from the script of „The Life of Brian“: „I'm not the Messiah! @@Grundewalt What about Dune is possible? Herbert specifically crafts a universe that is unlike our own: namely the existence and operation of the Spice Melange .... without which neither the imperium, nor space travel, nor the Fremen, nor the Bene Gesserit or all the noble houses would be possible. Not mentats, no Suk doctors, the Bene Tleilax or anything. It's fiction, deal with it

    • @threegreencharms

      @Grundewalt If you are familiar with the story, you know this portion of it takes place roughly 10,000 years After all Artificial Intelligence, robots, and All "thinking machines" are outlawed and strictly banned. Even a simple calculator is prohibited. All thinking machines are destroyed. This revolution takes place roughly 10-15,000 years from Now, and 10,000 years Before the Dune story starts. From this point forward, technological evolution grinds to a halt, at least as far as Murphys Law is concerned. In fact, much of humanity is sort-of "reset", and as historical cycles inevitably go, they regress into more primitive technologies and societal behaviors. Murphy's law only works up to certain limits. There are quantum limits. These limits are reached far before the banning of the machines, anyway. Computers don't get better forever, and even if they did, Murphys law is still irrelevant when the civilizations' technological might can't be measured by its computational capacity.

      IMO, the few major changes were done very respectfully to the intentions and interests of the orginal author. The tiny things like what you mentioned help make it successful as a modern film, which will expand the reach of Herbert's original work. I totally agree with what you said about the changes to Chani in the movie as I truly think it was a brillant change from the book. Having her be a non-believer and essentially aligned with the morals that Paul has at the beginning of the movie (i.e being against Paul becoming the Fremen messiah and the holy war), lets her serve as a physical representation of how far Paul has fallen by the end of the movie and without being too unsubtle, it makes it more clear than the novel that Paul is no longer the good guy of this story. Having Chani also be mad at Paul proposing a marriage to Irulan further compounds how much he has changed in the movie. Plus, these changes really make Chani a great and memorable character in the movie, whereas in the first novel she was very flat and bordering on being completely forgettable.

    •  6 місяців тому +3

      I don’t see Paul “falling” in his evolution to become the future ruler of all. Quite the contrary: he’s making grown-up decisions of how to consolidate his power, and Chani’s idealism, while cute, can’t (and won’t) stay in the way. There’s too much at risk.

She tells Paul what her warrior name is and that it means Desert Spring. She hates it because it comes from some old prophecy. When she is waking Paul up after he has drank the Water of Life, they say that to wake him it has to be a tear from the Desert Spring. Her performance between those scenes as the prophecy unfolds to me was great.

      @@DNOTE831 Well instead of telling me what I should do, how about you come up with a counter argument to what I said and how I viewed the character based off knowledge of the source material. Generally we think of spoiled brats as kids who throw temper tantrums because they dont get what they want. In the book she has a baby that dies in the sietch, and she is on paul's side knowing that paul only loves her and his marriage with Irulan is politics. And let me reiterate, that I loved her character up until the point she walked out. The big picture is a free arrakis, which is what paul wants. Yes he may have some other motives, but we all want a free arrakis. But to turn her back on the guy she loves and walk out on him because of a disagreement, is a bit childish when we are talking about the freedom of your whole world. She could have still been upset and mad, but stayed, and discussed this with him. Her walking out now shows inner problems within his ranks when they should be showing strength in unison. Now you can argue that she doesn't want to be a soldier in HIS war. Which is understandable, but I'll still argue that a freed arrakis should trump any reason she has. So now that I have given you a counterpoint to my view on her looking like a spoiled brat, can you come up with your own points as to how she isnt so we can have a productive conversation?

    The film makes it a point to show that Chani and Paul consummated their relationship. She could be pregnant at the end of the film. Chani's Blue Cloth: I'd like to state my ideas
    For the Fremen, wearing the color blue shows that one is in love with another. When Chani wears her blue cloth on her forehead, she displays this without remorse.
    BUT, when she ties it onto her arm during his duel with Feyd Rautha, it reminded me of tying a Favor to one's arm in medieval tournaments, like in Edmund Leighton's painting "God Speed." A knight would devote the honor he gains in combat to a noble lady, and would often show this by tying her favored color to his arm, even if there was no intention of love. Just so, Chani ties the color that she associates with Paul to her arm, showing that she supports him, but has reservations about truly loving him.

    1. How the actual f do the Fremen get a whole tent and more onto the sandworms and how do they get off?
    2. Why does the emperor places his army in the middle of the dessert where he can be attacked the best?

    • @Hiro-v7i

      2. Not in the desert. The army was encamped and protected behind the shield wall close to Arrakeen. Until the atomics created u huge gap in it through which the fremen would pour with the worms.

      They were also surrounded by mountains to protect against the storm. The atomic weapons were used to blow up a piece of the mountains to let the Fremen thru along with the storm and easily defeat the Emperors army.

      In the book they describe how everyone in the empire is terrified of the Sardaukar because they are thought to be invincible, and given how they are sure the Freman are all south of the equator there wasn't much need to worry.
      It did take hubris, some nukes and like 6 worms to break them after all.

      To address point 1, in the books (or maybe the original film?) the fremen use hooks that pry up a bit of skin, sand getting into it is irritating to the worm and they rotate to bring it as far from the sand as possible. They could attach the tent (which was very small) to that and have the worm rotate it up to the top.

    I understand why you appreciate the change to Chani, but I personally can't stand it. Her character has completely changed... and she's the only Fremen now who doesn't like Paul? That's just too weird. And how much of her attitude at the end is that she doesn't understand that Paul taking Irulan as his wife is for show purposes only, and that by taking Chani as his "official" concubine, she is really his life partner, not Irulan. BIG mistake by Paul to not explain that this was his plan.
    I'm also a bit disappointed by Saint Alia of The Knife can't be called that now, unless she goes on a killing spree (or something) at the beginning of Dune 3?

I guess it's difficult to know since we don't know what the plan is for Dune 3. Still don't like it, though; it's almost as if Villeneuve likes how Zendaya displays anger, so he wrote her as angry. I completely disagree with your take. In fact I wish they showed other Fremen who reject Paul , thus giving these extremely strong race of people AGENCY. Chani agency, elevates the film away from being a cringe white saviour trope.

    • @usdescartes
      @usdescartes 5 місяців тому

      @@IllaWilliams I mean, opinions vary. But a HUUUGE part of Frank Herbert's story is that, in Dune, there was a massive climate (social) shift, and the Fremen were uniformly behind Paul. It's a tragedy that Paul avoid leading this movement. It's basically the SciFi equivalent to Oedipus Rex - not the sex stuff, obviously, but it's the classic tale of someone burdened with destiny that he can't get out of. It isn't until Fremen/soldiers come back maimed and depressed that a Fremen-led movement against Paul began (not to mention the insanity of St. Alia of the Knife???).
      It's not about agency, by the way: it's about STORY. Herbert was a master at the classic tragic hero's journey trope. In the BOOK, Chani is ever-faithful to Paul AND Paul was ever-faithful to Chani. She has PLENTY of agency in the book. Other than Stilgar and Paul, she has maybe the most agency in the books. She is fierce about Paul's safety, as well that of her kids. In fact, come to think of it, she might have the MOST agency in the book; Paul can't escape the intifada he has visions of, Duke Leto is forced to take Arrakis when the emperor gives it to him; even Stilgar is trapped between Paul gaining leadership, but that the typical tradition of fighting to the death controls him for the rest of his life. Jessica is almost literally enthralled to Leto, and then she is essentially forced to become a Reverend Mother. Of the OG Dune characters, Chani might have the most agency in the book already, since she gets to make the most free-will decisions.
      Bottom line: YOU don't like the fact that Paul is a white male... or something? I don't want to put words in your mouth, but agency, frankly, is overrated. ALMOST NO ONE in life has true agency. So what is Dune about? Showing that a strong girl "gets to" have agency, or is the story worth telling as it was? Especially if Dune 3 comes into existence, I'm assuming it will be based on Dune Messiah, when the actual rebellion begins. Since we don't know yet, we'll have to wait to see how Villeneuve handles the rebellion. He could be foreshadowing the rebellion in Dune 2 in preparation for Dune 3 - that's my assumption, at least, if the story is to be coherent at all! But I hate it when directors think they know the work better than the original material. Yes, some things don't translate well, blah blah blah... but DON'T CHANGE CHARACTER TRAITS! That otherwise-masterpiece of the LOTR trilogy changed Faramir into a bad guy! But Tolkien describes him as a return to the Stewards of old, as wise as a wizard. FARAMIR WASN'T EVIL. And Chani did not have doubts about Paul. Pick someone else. There ARE other actors in the movie....

  • @hughten
    @hughten 6 місяців тому +1

    Not in the book but important to who Paul becomes in this movie. The Emperor's reason for killing Leto was because Leto "was weak" and led with "his heart" (I can't remember the exact words for this). During the first half of Dune 2 movie, Paul is echoing his dad leading with his heart by avoiding going to the South, not becoming the Kwisatz Haderach, and using the Fremen to wage a holy war. When Paul tells the Fremen to send the Great Houses to paradise, he is showing that he is not his dad because his dad would have never attacked the Great Houses. He was showing the Emperor that he is not "weak". Important difference shown by DV to show dangerous and maniacal that Paul has become.

      I didn't read the books but love these movies. I think everyone should watch zendaya's performance the second time they watch this.
