I had a parlour palm from Ikea for 4+ years, which was labelled as “decorative bamboo” and the card said it likes to be wet and low light. Poor thing was soggy for years and getting brown leaves, I kept thinking I’m not watering it enough. Eventually I used an app to identify it as the correct species and looked up how to care for it. Surprisingly it’s still alive, recently repotted and pushing some new growth. Very hardy plant indeed! Thank you for the extra info and advice, I’ll be trying seasol and fertiliser now that my palm is no longer miserable.

Hi, Kathi. About 8 years ago, I had gotten a tiny floral arrangement from a neighbor which contained a 6 inch tall parlor palm. It kinda gets ignored but I like to call it "skillful neglect ". Today it is about 2.5 feet tall and very happy. Easy care plant unlike other palms.

I have a tiny exemplar on my office desk , I wonder if it will ever grow any taller than the 30cm it is now! Regular feeding, not too heavy in the watering and for the last year it has grown well, but definitely not taller. It is a joy seeing how the leaves grow and open! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching. They definitely grow bigger, but they are slow. If you can give yours more light, but not direct light, it may grow a little faster.
I didn’t realize parlor palms were so hardy for temperature and humidity! I feel like I never know what my roommates’ palm wants LOL, I just got her 2 more for her birthday because they are adorable but I wanted us to have 2 more tries with it since the first one we had didn’t make it 😭 thank you for the tips!

The Parlour Palm - my first ever plant as a teenager. They, and the Monstera remind me of the 80s 😂 Good times! I discovered back then also that you can repair a bent palm frond by splinting it with a plastic straw split down the length and wrapped around the frond stem. Leave there for several weeks and it will help the plant repair the damage. 🌱

I have a massive cluster of palms currently planted in an 20x25 cm cascade bonsai pot that has grown so dense and lush in the middle that no light can get through. So I have decided I will need to divide up the root ball for the overall wellbeing of the plant going forward. Would you suggest I try to pry it apart rather than using a large knife to cut it into? Thanks for any advice.
Oh I should point out I'm not an expert. I've read that palms can be finicky when repotted so I would try prying it apart rather than cutting. Good luck.
@@NerdyKathi Thanks for the reply, I have the group planting repotted into one size up planter and is doing very well. After finely freeing it from its old root bound pot, the rootball was such a dense healthy mass of fine feeder roots I did not wish to disturb them and just left them together. 👍🪴
You mentioned a seaweed feed Kathi… what are the benefits of using this….I am a bit of a sucker for impulse buying and it’s good to hear of benefits of purchase first. Happy Anzac Day
I find my plants love Seasol, they seem healthier and happier after I give it to them. It helps establish stronger roots, and can also help to combat pests, though it won't stop pests. It's like vitamins for them, I think, and I'm still on my first bottle which I bought 3 years ago. Well worth it.

The Parlour Palm is one of my wish list plants. We see 'Parlour Palms' for sale here all the time, but when I check the species I find that it is actually Ravenea rivularis, the Majesty Palm, or Chamaedorea cataractarum, the Cat Palm. So frustrating. Thanks for the care info!
@@NerdyKathi I am located in South Florida. I don't troll the garden centers here too often, so I could just be missing the Parlour Palm season. We don't have independent plant stores in the area and the big box centers carry mostly landscaping plants with a little section of houseplants that don't change much at all.
These are the plant channels people should pay attention to. Older people who have grown plants for 20+ years.
Actually, I haven't been growing plants for that long. 😊
