Hello my dear "Big Beat"...my name is Carole and I am a French Canadian from Ottawa Canada. I totally enjoyed your reaction to this song. Good for you. I was very young when it came out...I am now 71 years old and a terminally ill person. I have a few months left but let me tell you son, REALLY listen to what this song has to say. My Father died 5 years ago at 95 years old...so, at times, it s never too late. Tell those you love and admire that you think so of them. My Father was my hero . He was in the second WW., so when I see that picture in the video of the guy's father in uniform, well, I cry. as even though I am as old as I am , I am still "Daddy's Little Girl". I was lucky enough to talk to him at his level and with understanding of what HE had been through....the best of luck to you..💝💝💝💚

One of the most emotional songs you will ever hear and Paul Carrack's voice is perfect for it.

Hi again Big Beat....Carole here. You will notice that the fella in the video with the little boy is also the guitarist standing beside Mike as he sings. Just a little observation. I just cannot remember the whole band's names. Thank you so very much for your touching reply to my comment. As I wrote before, these are good words to live by.....I know personally....again, keep up the great work....👍👍👍💖

Although difficult to find I would recommend Mike Rutherford' s album Smallcreep's Day as his masterpiece with epic drumming by drummer legend Simon Philips. One of the few albums for which I still use my CD player 🤣

Hey, BBR - you keep talking about how "eighties" this is.. got a problem with that decade? lol... This is just a cool, emotional song.... I'm super-close to my family, but know some others who are/were not.. I still get tears listening to this...

That was exactly the point the video producer wanted to make. It emphasises the meaning of the song lyrics, i.e. the generational divide...
If you watch carefully, it is the older choir that sings the line - "it's too late, when we die"......

Mike Rutherford post GENESES is why it sounds familiar. You could picture Phill Collins as the singer instead of Paul Carrack.

The music definitely has a 'Genesis' feel. Paul Carrack also has a familiar (and great IMO) voice as he was the lead singer for the bands Ace (How Long) and Squeeze (Tempted). Mike and the Mechanics flew a bit under the radar compared to Genesis, but their self titled album 3 years before this song has some good tunes such as Silent Running, Taken In, A call to Arms, Hanging by a Thread. It's definitely got an 80's feel. I used to have a cassette tape of it I listened to back in the day.

Mike Rutherford is the guitarist and the leader of the group. He's actually also one of the founders of Genesis, a group he started in school along with his classmates Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips. A few years later, they auditioned and hired a 19-year-old Phil Collins to join them as their drummer.
After two unsuccessful solo records -- the first one on which he hired a singer and the second one on which he sang himself -- Rutherford put together this group which actually had two lead singers, Paul Carrack (who sings here) and Paul Young (formerly of Sad Cafe).
Late in 1985, they released their first single, 'Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground).' Carrack sings on that one and I highly recommend it.
As for Genesis, one of their songs which I would recommend for which Rutherford wrote the lyrics is 'Land of Confusion.'
I would highly recommend reacting to the videos of both of these songs. They're both pretty good, I think.

Good stuff.. thanks for the comment. I know of genesis but never knew he founded them. I'll add your two recommendations to my growing list. Watch out for these within the next couple weeks. Rock on
