• Mike + The Mechanics -...
For the first time on the channel, we are checking out Mike + The Mechanics with their song "The Living Years." This tune had such amazing lyrics and really gives the listener a new perspective on those that we love! I loved the 80's sound with the use of the synths and electronic drums but the message was what really made this song amazing! Hope you enjoy! #reaction #mikeandthemechanics #thelivingyears #80smusic #musicreactions

This tune had so much truth and so many life lessons! What is ONE song that truly changed your perspective on life?! LET US KNOW!
This song is sacred. “I think I caught his spirit in my baby’s new born tears” makes me cry every time.
I was told I’d never have children. I adopted my oldest daughter just before I turned 17. My mom and daddy went all out for her. I gave birth 2 years after my daddy died.
Listened to this song driving home. I remember walking into the kitchen and mum & dad were just sitting and talking quietly. I said to them, “If a thousand parents were lined up and I had to choose, I’d pick both of you.” They looked at me rather surprised lol. But I meant every word of it. Both have passed now after leading happy long lives, dad passed in his sleep in his own bed aged 89. Mum passed only one hour in hospital aged 95. I’m 70 now and I still miss them terribly. But I’m glad I heard that song that day and told them how I felt when they were both still here💞
I lost my uncle who lived his whole life with us the same day I heard this for the first time . Genius.
That’s an amazing memory to have for sure!
What a wonderful daughter to your parents you were ❤️
My daddy and I threw hella drunk together. Don’t get bent. Alcohol was always around, and it took us all day to get drunk. We rode the dirt mountain roads, sang old songs, played riddles, walked in the woods, fed the cows. After dark, we sat at the table in the camper, moved on to home made wine. And with our plastic cups, started talking. He explained his choices. I explained mine. I’ve been loved. I am loved, but never as much as those hours. We cried together. He has been gone for years, but gosh I’m grateful. I played this for him. Had to talk him into it. I’m sure he thought I was going to play pots and pans falling.
When my daughter accepts I made mistakes, but tells me I’m the best mom, and she don’t want a swap, I have to leave the room.
Having the different generation choirs always hits my heart.
Mike is the bearded one on guitar, and, walking with his kids.
I've seen this bring grown men to tears.
This song never gets old. It's both beautiful lyrically and musically and I would think strikes a chord with so many people.
Some of the best lyrics ever written.
So good! Thanks for watching! 😁
It's Mike AND The Mechanics !
Interesting facts from Wiki:
The song addresses a son's regret over unresolved conflict with his now-deceased father. It won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1989, and was nominated for four Grammy awards in 1990, including Record and Song of the Year, as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Video. In 1996, famed composer Burt Bacharach opined that the song was one of the finest lyrics of the last ten years.
In 2004, "The Living Years" was awarded a 4-Million-Air citation by BMI.
The song was inspired by Mike Rutherford and B.A. Robertson realizing their fathers had died around the same time, and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young, as well.
Rutherford said:
Being of similar age, we both came from an era where our parents had lived through two world wars, when young men wanted to be like their fathers - wear the same clothes, do the same things. But then there was a huge change and our generation wanted to be anything but their fathers. It wasn't our parents' fault, there was just a big social change. Pop music had come along, The Beatles, denim trousers... for the first time, teens had their own culture. That's how our generation couldn't really talk to our parents in the same way.
So we had the idea of writing a song about how you never really talk to your father, and you miss out on these things.
Mike , is Mike Rutherford guitarist from Genesis. The singer is Paul Carrick, he also is a solo singer who has had hits with Squeeze” tempted “ also with Ace, “how long” the keyboards are played by Paul Young from sad cafe,”every day hurts” great band to check out. This song was written by BA Robertson
Awesome information ✌️
Thanks for all the info!
*Carrack
Mike Rutherford was the guitarist in Genesis. It is very personal to him as he was talking about conflict with his father. It makes me cry when I hear it. I wasn't there when my dad died and I still hold conversations with him. 30yrs later. I wish I could I could have told him what he meant to me
Indeed, and absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Phil Collins!
Best line ever written "I'm sure I heard his echo in my baby's new born tears". It makes me cry every time!
Genius in using two generations in the choir's singing the harmonies.
No wonder it was highly regarded as a socially relevant video/lyrical masterpiece.
Indeed. To me showing the children's choir followed by showing the adult choir later in the song is one of the most meaningful aspects of the video. Those children don't know it, but in the blink of an eye, they will also be in the adult choir. It goes by fast. So say it loud, and say it clear to those you love before it's too late.
This track always makes me cry, especially since my own dad passed. I was the youngest and never really felt as close to him as my older siblings were. When he got cancer, I was the one who took him to every radio and chemo and sat with him him and held his hand. He told me how much he loved me and how proud he was of me, and vice versa, we talked so much and I am so grateful we got to do that. I was holding his hand and telling him it was OK to go when he took his last breath. It is SO important to communicate your feelings to your loved ones, always. ✌❤
Oh wow! So sorry to hear about your loss but it’s so nice that you were able to be there for your father and share those feelings with him! Thanks for sharing ❤️
My father passed away in January 0f 1989, this song came out in December of 1988. I was not there the day that he died. This song holds a very deep meaning for me. Love your reaction!
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻 Thanks for sharing and I really appreciate your continued support! Have a blessed day!
Excellent reaction to this classic. Respect.
Really appreciate that and thanks for hanging out!
This crosses all boundaries, all genres, the lyrics mean so much to so many people.
You can replace father with mother, brother, sister, extended family and family friends too
💯 So much truth!
This song hits everyone deep! I get more out of it each time I listen and watch this video. It was really big in the 80's! I loved seeing it on MTV and over the decades the meaning changes for me.
This is one if the most beautiful songs ever written. Such nostalgia! This is an important lesson/warning. Music is "food for the soul". Thankyou😃
another great choice, Silent Running by them is also wonderful
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great reaction to a wonderful song. Thank you!
Thanks so much Linda! Such a great message on this tune! 🎵
Mike Rutherford (Mike + the Mechanics) is also from Genesis.
Best lyrics ever! Excellent reaction!
Glad you enjoyed!
FYI - It's pronounced Mike AND The Mechanics. All master musicians.
Ah ok! Thanks for the heads up!
Loved this then- love it now.
Absolutely, what’s not to love!
Intelligent assessment. Well done. Great song.
A message for every generation. One of the best songs ever.
Great reaction. This song just hits everytime I hear it.
Glad you enjoyed!
A song about guilt and regret. I hope he’s found peace 💔🙏
In 1988 I opened a music store - compact discs were becoming wildly popular. Sometime between then and the end of 1989 this album dropped and Living Years was in heavy rotation on radio. It was a very big seller for us.
We made it 12 years and into the time when all the big music labels refused to get on board with digital music. So the way I like to say the way that ended is: people used to pay for music and water was free; now it’s the other way around.😂
I am happy you mentioned that you are a father. Things like that help us understand each other’s POVs. I am from Michigan, age 64. 3 adult kids married 27 years between them, five wonderful grandchildren (so far). I have been battling a treatable but incurable cancer for just over 6 years. I have beat it 5 times, currently trying hard for a 6th. The sentiment in songs such as this for people like me is strong. I have been blessed with many years to say and do the things that are important to me in the living years. On the day I was diagnosed during my 3rd back surgery, I was 58 years old. The first thought I had was many people went to work or school this morning never knowing they would never come home again - at least that has not happened to me. From there, you just have to keep positive thoughts, accept and appreciate the help and love from others.
Thank you for all the positivity you exude on your channel.
My uncle died Christmas Eve 1988 and this song was playing as I rushed to the ER.

Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for hanging with us!
So sorry for your loss prayers sent for your healing 🙏 @@joanholman3105
This is a profound song, sad because it is tru but at the same time, hopeful.
Every time I hear this song tears well up ine eyes. Leaves a huge lump in my throat. I won't explain the personal experience. God,how did they sing without choking. Either deaf or heartless fiends.
Oh, now that’s hilarious that you picked up on the Genesis vibe. “Mike” Rutherford is a longtime original member of Genesis!
Nice intuition’
Lucky guess 🤣
Great reaction mate 👍
Really appreciate it!
Search for a song called "Monsters" by James Blunt
@@Rocky19577 We actually covered that here on the channel. So moving!
How about 'The girl that never was'
I could hear his echo in my babys new born tears,,,still miss the oldman but its too late now,
Beautiful, song, never stop to move me to tears😪❤️
You have to, have to react to the band ACE and "I know there's something going on" with the singer, it's a forgotten gem from the 70's.
Thank you for great music reactions✌️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Well said! Music teaches you things. Absolutely! Art can teach so many things, especially sensitive things.
I don't think there are many "heavy" songs today. I've heard some but they're rare. Heavy songs were common back in the day because it's great song material and these are topics that deeply touch people's hearts and minds. I think the lack of heavy songs in popular music keeps young people from being exposed to these ideas, even sad ideas or ideas about real love. There are many songs of the 70s that I heard as a kid that were very deep and a little over my head but I remember them to this day and the message gradually sank in as I got older. That's why being exposed to them is good. Radios were great for that. They seemed to always be on back in the day. Even with this song, I have always loved it but I was in my 20s when it came out. I thought it was cool but that was it. Only as I got older, like my 40s, did it's message really sink in and now this song brings tears to my eyes and it reminds me to do what I have to do before it's too late.
Good Ear, one of the members of this band, came from Genesis, the band for which Phil Collins was a drummer.
Even if you can't agree on something, learn to admit that, put it aside, and find what you CAN agree on!
Mike Rutherford of Mike & the Mechanics was part of the group Genesis who also had Peter Gabriel & Phil Collins in it. All 3 have had great success outside of Genesis.
So did Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, and Steve Hackett. Who all played in Genesis.
I think this song hits with anyone that maybe didn't feel as close to their father as they could have been. So many lines that you can relate to, along with advice such as "you can listen as well as you hear". One of my favourite bands from the time. Over My Shoulder is also worth a listen
I follow a bunch of reaction video folks, and I stumbled onto yours today.
Not sure how to check, but if you haven’t yet reacted to Crowded House “Don’t Dream It’s Over” I’d love to watch that!
Haven’t checked that one out, have to add it to the list! Thanks for hanging with us and checking out the channel!
you have to check FISH / marillion ERA
Mike Rutherford was a guitarist and bassist for Genesis
Mike with the beard is Mike Rutherford from Genisis. The singer is Paul Carrack from the group Squeeze.
Mike and the mechanics.
Thanks! 😄
Mike is the guitarist with the white suit. They are called Mike & the Mechanics. Excellent lyrics ofcourse. Very emotional song too. 💔
They were Phil's band. It's incredible that you picked up on that so easily.
Your take on lyrics is closer to Teach Your Children by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
My understanding of this song, having lost everyone in generation before me is talk to your father and mother and clear up any misunderstandings. Once they're gone, it's too late, and a lot of people are stuck carrying the guilt of never clearing the air
Definitely could be!
This evokes some sad memories for me. I miss my dad so much. My solace is my relationship with God
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻
Try another hit from them. ' Can You Hear Me' is pure 80 Vibe. Great Reaction. New Subscriber.
Give a listen to Everything I Own by a group named Bread. It has some of these same sentiments and it is an older song than this one. I love songs with lyrics that make you pause and reflect. We rush around too much these days. Time is fleeting. Great choice❣️
It’s already on the channel! That one was such a tear jerker! Shewee!! 🙏🏻
@@setonhillstudios Ooooh. Gotta go watch it! Thanks.
😢😢😢😢😢sad nobody is guaranteed tomorrow
💯
So sad, wish this song was around before my Dad died, he passed away in hospital when l was young l went to see him but he was in a coma. l never got to tell him l loved him and how proud l had always been of him.
So sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻
@@setonhillstudios Thank you.
You've been living under a rock....
Maybe so! 😁 Time I crawl out I guess! 🤷🏻♂️
There is definitely a reason it has a Genesis sound lol. Others have already pointed it out though so wont say, but yeah, they had some powerhouses in this group.
Interesting that you would say this reminds you of the band Genesis, not knowing that Mike was the bass/guitarist for Genesis from their beginnings in 1968 as a founding member. Surprised you have no Genesis on your channel. Perhaps you've listened to all their work. I would suggest some of Peter Gabriel's Genesis from the early '70s. Some great music there. Or Phil in the late '70s. Prog Rock at its finest.
Now a little history: Mike started this side project when Phil took a hiatus from Genesis to move to Canada to win his wife back after she warned him not to go on an extended Genesis tour or she would not be there when he returned. She left with the kids and the dog. As Phil was gone, Mike Rutherford started Mike + The Mechanics. (they have some other nice hits) When Andrea would not come back, Phil was left alone in his house and just wrote music to work out his feelings. His producer asked to hear some of it and the rest is history. You could say it was In The Air That Night.
Wow! That is a wild backstory! Yeah I definitely need to check out some Genesis here on the channel! Any suggestions? Thanks for hanging out and appreciate the info!
@@setonhillstudios You could spend a year reviewing all the music Genesis (including their solo projects) has produced, but an early and surprising gem is before Phil came on called 'The Knife' from their rather folksy album Trespass. The first tune with Collins on board is a sci-fi piece called 'Watcher of the Skies' from the album Nursery Crymes. Two epics from that era are 'Firth of Fifth' (about an imaginary river) and 'Supper's Ready' (loosely based on the Book of Revelation). They are definitely not a religious band however. Finally a couple prog gems from the Phil Collins era are 'Dance on a Volcano' and the ballad 'Ripples'. One of their interesting later works is 'Mama' (it is not an ode to motherhood).
Oh, one more late prog piece is 'Dodo/Lurker' about extinction. Their live concerts are even better than their studio works. ABACAB live rocks! And Phil and Chester's drum duets are unbelievable. Phil's solo work 'In The Air Tonight' LIVE from Paris in 2004 is spectacular. Wow. That is a lot. Sorry. (if you only do one, review that last one mentioned)
Don't miss any chances...
💯
Stop pausing, you will feel it better without pausing, comment at the end
Thanks but we don’t operate like that and understand we aren’t for everyone. Have a great one!

Appreciate it man! Thanks for hanging out! 😁

Let’s goooo! 😁
Mike, Paul, and BA all lost their fathers while they were young men.
So sad! 😞
It's Mike AND the Mechanics, not plus. I am enjoying watching your videos!9
Appreciate the insight and so glad you are enjoying the content! Have a great one! 😃
Mate, if you take anything from this song - be there for your kids. Be an ear they can always count on etc. You don't get a take 2 at being a dad - so do it well brother
Great advice indeed! Really appreciate it!
Mikes from Genesis.
That’s what someone else said! Got a Genesis video dropping tomorrow and it is wild! 🤣
My opinion is the church scene was exactly like a sermon from God giving us a life lesson in humility and closure? The kids choir singing in lockstep with the older generation is shown too. We all have regrets about someone who we've never resolved differences and arguments with before they die? If I had my way, I'd have this played in every church, self help groups etc.......... "You can listen as well as you hear" 😢
Mike AND the Mechanics...not plus.
Gotcha! Thanks for the info! 😃
🇨🇦 You sure talked a lot during this one ! 🇨🇦
Yeah…the channel isn’t for everyone. I’ll never be the one that sits and watches and waits till the end. No worries if it ain’t your thing! 🤷🏻♂️
Its not Mike plus the mechanics its Mike And the Mechanics
Gotcha! Thanks so much! 😁
Your welcome
😂yep Mike is from Genesis! I feel for kids these days. So much political hate. Hearing people of power spreading hate against everybody. We like to teach our kids not to bully people. How when they have seen what since Trumpet appeared.
I thought I heard some Genesis in there! Thanks for watching!
Get out the kleenex... ⚡⚡💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔⚡⚡
You spoiled it by stopping the video so much. A pity.
Yeah, we ain’t for everyone. Thanks for giving us a shot anyway!
