My father died not long after this song was released, he was unreachable, so I did not get to say all the things I wish I had. Same with Mom years later. This song always hits me so hard when I hear it..fills me with regrets. Thank you for doing this Ms. D. Much love, stay safe & stay strong sweetie. 💜💜

Thank you for sharing that...I have to believe that our loved ones do know how we feel. And I have faith that we'll meet up with them again...just my opinion and my beliefs. Take care, love!💜

I feel you,,,my father had walked out in us when I was 2 had a lot of animosity towards him for it he really-entered my life when I was 17 and tried to rebuild the broken bridge between us,,,I resisted him and the last Christmas of his life he wanted all of his children together with him for one Christmas before we all grew up and moved on I was in the military at the time and only 18 ,,,I said I wasn’t going because I was going to my mom and I know I did it to hurt him from deep rooted anger,,,,he called me repeatedly for 3 months after that and tried to get to know me that way I always rushed him off the phone ,,,,,,I talked to him the day before he was murdered at the end of the call he said I love you baby girl and I’m sorry that I hurt you,,,,I said yeah and hung up,,,the next morning my mom called me to give me the news of his murder,,,,the biggest regret I had was never telling him I loved him 😢😢 and 2 days after his funeral this song came on the radio and I completely lost it! Moral of the story folks forgive and try to meet them in the middle because you never know when they’ll be gone trust me on this! Been there and have major regrets,,,,I can never tell him what I wanted to and never will be able to,,,don’t be me!

I completely relate to this song. Pops and I had unresolved issues before he passed 5 months after I enlisted into the military. Regret never hurt like this. His generation weren’t the type to express their love, but we always knew. I just wish I could’ve reciprocated as much. Miss you Pops, love you.

Yes, the two choirs were a great touch. It adds to the generation gap idea and the inevitable misunderstandings. getting past that by communicating.

Sad or a challenge? The song teaches that you never know how long you have and shouldn't have regrets.
"Say it Loud. Say it Clear. You can Listen as well as you Hear. It's too late when we die to admit we don't see eye to eye.
So we open up a quarrel Between the present and the past We only sacrifice the future It's the bitterness that lasts
So don't yield to the fortunes You sometimes see as fate It may have a new perspective On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in You may just be okay"
How powerful is that? How appropriate is this song if you just apply it outside of a father's relationship to his son (or son to father) and apply it to life. The difference between listening and hearing is understanding. Understanding is hope but to get there you have to accept and make a choice. Acceptance is faith and choice is love. Together they are trust which is respect. These lyrics teach us that our voices must be loud and clear so those that just hear background noise are forced to listen. We may not see eye to eye but you can see my point of view and I can see yours if we're willing to try and don't sacrifice the future with bitterness or anger. Persevere. If we all try we can get there, together. It can be okay.
The situation all over the world of tensions, misunderstandings, or narrow scopes makes me see potential and hope in this song. I see the lessons that give us something to work for. We may not see eye to eye but we may gain a new perspective if we're willing to try, to persevere against the currents of anger to come to an understanding, to come to hope.
I loved this song when it first came out (yes, I'm older) and love it again now. Songs with lyrics that teach, with a complexity beyond cursing to a beat. Songs that reach people. Those are my favourites (and I'm Canadian, we put U's after O's in a lot of things).
Great reaction D Lynn. I love the research you do prior to a reaction. It gives perspective and shows your commitment. All the best and have a great weekend all.

As always, you have such great insight on these songs! I guess I just look at the face value, and how it makes me feel at first. Knowing the origin of the song also lended to the sadness. I do see where you're coming from, and that's probably the message that the writers were trying to convey. Thankfully, I can listen to it with a different perspective...thank you for watching and your wise comments!😁

@@DLynn Feeling in the moment is part of your gift. The work you do for research about the song and it's writers shows how much more than surface you go. I find you give a balance of immediate feeling and historic relevance with your reactions and it's one of the reasons I sub and enjoy them so much. In so far as insight, great or otherwise, I'm just me. Like everyone else I'm better at some things and not as good at others. Lets just say I know enough to know how much I don't know and I try to learn as much as I can along the way. I'm also willing to admit if I'm wrong and learn from it so I don't repeat a mistake. Your choice to explore new music and content shows your commitment to learning as well and if something has happened and you reacted in the moment but changed your opinion after the fact that shows your willingness to go beyond an error and learn from it. We're who we are. If everyone was the same the world would be so boring. It's our differences that matter more than our similarities in my opinion because those differences are examples we can use to learn and grow from. All the best. Today, being Thursday and with what I have on my schedule tomorrow I'll take this opportunity to wish you a happy weekend to come. I hope everyone has a great one.

That moment where Mike's son leaves his side when they're standing before the headstone was unscripted. The director made the fine decision of using it and leaving it in the video. (That's Mike's actual son, too.)
    .
Mike Rutherford is a very underrated songwriter and is probably more responsible for pushing Genesis in the direction of pop than any of the others in the band -- including Phil Collins.
    .
    Nice reaction. Thanks!

Interesting...yeah, I only ever think of Phil Collins when I hear of Genesis. That's why I love doing these reactions, because I learn about everyone else that usually isn't mentioned or in the forefront of these bands. Thank you!

    D. Lynn, I also really like this song, especially, according to your observation, how the children's choir began the chorus and then the reprisal with the adult chorus. That was a nice progression of song development and almost like an exchange of words between the children of the current generation and those of the one before. Very keen musical observation you made there! I enjoyed your comments during your reaction and the extra bit of trivia you mentioned about the song composer and performer. Thank you!
